In the first segment, a returning Michael Koresky ("Films of Endearment"), the Museum of the Moving Image's editorial director, with his latest book "Sick and Dirty: Hollywood's Gay Golden Age and the Making of Modern Queerness" (Bloomsbury, 2025). The book is an original history celebrating the persistence of queerness onscreen, behind the camera, and between the lines during the dark days of the Hollywood Production Code. From the 1930s to the 1960s, the Motion Picture Production Code severely restricted what Hollywood cinema could depict. This included 'any inference' of the lives of homosexuals. Gay activist Vito Russo famously condemned Hollywood's censorship regime, lambasting many midcentury films as the bigoted products of his titular “Celluloid Closet.” Koresky reexamines these scorned films to tell the story of how filmmakers, straight and queer, in-the-closet and out-in-the-open, smuggled queer themes and ideas into their work, incrementally paving the way for recognition and representation. There is more to the movies during this period of popular filmmaking than meets the eye: The Golden Age set in motion many of the ways we still talk about queerness in the twenty-first century. In this insightful, wildly entertaining book, cinema historian Michael Koresky finds new meaning in 'problematic”' classics of the Code era like Hitchcock's "Rope," Minnelli's "Tea and Sympathy", and—bookending the period and anchoring Koresky's narrative—William Wyler's two adaptations of "The Children's Hour," Lillian Hellman's provocative hit play about a pair of schoolteachers accused of lesbianism. Lifting up the under-appreciated queer filmmakers, writers, and actors of the era, Koresky finds artists who are long overdue for reevaluation. Through his brilliant analysis, "Sick and Dirty" reveals the 'bad seeds' of queer cinema to be surprisingly, even gleefully subversive, reminding us, in an age of book bans and gag laws, that nothing makes queerness speak louder than its opponents' bids to silence it. In the second segment, Filmwax friend Josh Karp returns once again to discuss his latest article for the online magazine, Air Mail: "The Miracle at the Truck Stop", about the long shuttered Burt Reynolds Theater in Jupiter, Florida. At the height of his fame, Burt Reynolds had a dream: to open a dinner theater in the middle of nowhere! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=szjlaU00vKw
The Barbell Mamas Podcast | Pregnancy, Postpartum, Pelvic Health
Challenging long-held beliefs about diastasis recti, this episode dives deep into groundbreaking research that's transforming how we understand abdominal separation during pregnancy and postpartum recovery. As a pelvic floor physical therapist and researcher, I've watched the online conversation around diastasis recti create unnecessary fear and restriction for active mothers. The truth? Most of what you've heard about "coning," "safe exercises," and postpartum recovery timelines isn't supported by current evidence. A shocking 60% of social media content about diastasis recti contains incorrect information according to new research by Dr. Sylvia Gaglio and colleagues.Contrary to popular advice, the evidence doesn't support that coning causes harm or worsens abdominal separation. What's more surprising: exercises that move through range of motion (like sit-ups) may be more effective for reducing inter-recti distance than static holds like planks or bird dogs. This challenges the conventional approach of keeping postpartum women in neutral positions for extended periods. The parallels between how we underdose exercise for seniors and postpartum women are striking. Out of fear of causing harm, we may be holding new mothers back from building the strength and resilience they truly need for the physical demands of parenthood. The goal isn't to eliminate all strain on your abdominal wall—it's to build a core strong enough to handle the inevitable strains of daily life and movement.Whether you're currently pregnant, navigating postpartum recovery, or working with prenatal clients, this episode offers evidence-based perspectives to help you approach core training with confidence rather than fear. Subscribe to the Barbell Mamas podcast for more myth-busting conversations at the intersection of motherhood, strength, and movement.___________________________________________________________________________Don't miss out on any of the TEA coming out of the Barbell Mamas by subscribing to our newsletter You can also follow us on Instagram and YouTube for all the up-to-date information you need about pelvic health and female athletes. Nicolás Tapia is the chef and owner of the restaurant Yum Cha in Santiago, Chile. Nicolás talks about how he became interested in tea during a trip to China and during a family style meal where everyone was drinking tea he was reminded of the Chilean concept of once, the evening tea and meal. That's when the idea was planted in his head to create a restaurant where food and tea could be paired together, combining his cooking experience, Chilean ingredients and the influences from China and elsewhere in Asia where he continues to explore regularly.I mention this in the conversation, but when I first heard about Yum Cha I questioned whether it was going to work. A tasting menu with Asian techniques, Chilean ingredients and a tea pairing? It's a risk. Even though there is a ton of tea consumed in Chile, more than anywhere else in Latin America per capita and even more than in China and Japan. Then I went and I was like, alright, he knows what he's doing. It comes through in the interview. I think it's a good example of someone following their curiosities to another part of the world with an open mind and doing something interesting with it what they learned, and continuing to learn, engage and create something new. I highly recommend a meal there if you are in Santiago. Or stop by the tea house he is about to open. Nicolás did the interview from a hotel room in La Paz, Bolivia, where he was doing an event later that week with the restaurant Phayawi, which I haven't been to but I've heard great things. I'll be in Bolivia in a few months and hopefully I'll have time for it.Read more at New Worlder.
In this episode, we dive headfirst into the drama behind the TEA app — a platform where women anonymously flag men as red or green. Is it justice or just gossip? We unpack the ethics of calling people out online, the fine line between warnings and slander, and how Christian values like mercy, forgiveness, and "turning the other cheek" fit into it all. We also end the discussion with another controversial topic: Is dolma overrated? You're not gonna want to miss this! The Barbell Mamas Podcast | Pregnancy, Postpartum, Pelvic Health
Dive into a thoughtful critique of "Floored," the bestselling pelvic floor health book by Dr. Sarah Reardon (The Vagina Whisperer). This episode unpacks both the groundbreaking achievements and potential shortcomings of this influential text that's reshaping how we talk about pelvic health. As a pelvic floor physical therapist and researcher, I offer a balanced assessment of how this book succeeds brilliantly in making pelvic floor conversations accessible and shame-free. The conversational tone and clear explanations of complex anatomy deserve significant praise, especially in the excellent chapters on sexual function and pain management. However, I challenge several recommendations around posture and exercise that don't align with current evidence. Claims suggesting crossing your legs or specific sleeping positions cause dysfunction aren't supported by research. Similarly, the advice to "always Kegel during resistance training" and "always exhale during exertion" oversimplifies the complex, integrated nature of how our bodies naturally function during movement. Most concerning are statements suggesting women can cause "permanent pelvic floor dysfunction" by returning to exercise "too soon" after birth - language that inadvertently blames mothers for symptoms largely determined by genetics and birth trauma. These symptoms are expected parts of recovery, not indicators of failure.Whether you've read the book or are curious about pelvic health, this episode offers valuable context for understanding how we can empower rather than frighten women with health information. Let's celebrate progress while continuing to evolve our understanding based on the best available evidence. What pelvic health books or resources have you found most helpful? Share your thoughts and join the conversation about evidence-based approaches to women's health.___________________________________________________________________________Don't miss out on any of the TEA coming out of the Barbell Mamas by subscribing to our newsletter You can also follow us on Instagram and YouTube for all the up-to-date information you need about pelvic health and female athletes. Through most of history, monarchs wielded unlimited political and military power, while their Queens and consorts were in charge of producing heirs and ruling the hearts of the people. Since the fall of feudalism, the 10 remaining hereditary monarchs of Europe have lost their unchecked authority. But their spouses' so called ‘soft powers' of hosting diplomats, supporting charities and greeting the public are more important than ever. And they look fabulous doing it! Together, they explore the power of storytelling, time travel, and timeless principles of customer service that bridge both the past and the present.Dave offers a fascinating look into his fictional character Charlie—a seasoned business consultant who finds himself wrestling with the dilemma of whether to reveal his experiences of time travel. Through Charlie's adventures, Dave weaves powerful parables about business, leadership, and customer service. Notably, he challenges the traditional notion that “the customer is always right,” reframing it as “the customer is always the customer,” and shares real-life examples of how businesses can differentiate themselves through responsiveness and personal connection.Carrie and Dave discuss how customer expectations have evolved post-pandemic, touching on topics like service responsiveness, modern communication tools, and how old-school relationship-building lessons remain just as relevant today. Dave also teases future books in his “Echoes” series, from stories set at sea on cruise ships to tales inspired by the chaos of urban streets.Listeners will walk away reflecting on how personal experiences shape their choices, how to serve others more effectively in business and life, and how to translate the lessons of the past into meaningful action today.Writing Prompt: Dave encourages listeners to look back over significant life events—both triumphs and mistakes—and write about what they learned from those experiences, finding connections that shape who they've become today.Contact Dave Moravec:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/davemoravec2018/Email: ddmoravec5@gmail.comWebsite: www.salesmanagerforrent.comPhone: 309.838.1947 Echoes Across the Tracks Book: https://amzn.to/3UAnpcSEchoes to Remember Book: https://amzn.to/40fAKLa Echoes to Remember Coffee and Tea With CarrieVee Podcast Episode: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/coffee-and-tea-with-carrievee/id1514671446?i=1000654785238 Radical Empowerment Method Book on Amazon: https://amzn.to/3Bdp2BC Book CarrieVee for a Speaking Engagement: https://www.coachcarriev.com/contact-me Join the Confidence and Clarity Membership! https://carrievee.com/confidence-clarity-1 Schedule your Discovery Call with CarrieVee!https://schedulewithcarrievee.as.me/?appointmentType=12343596 Step Into Your Big Life Freebie: https://www.coachcarriev.com/stepintoyourbiglifefreebie The Radical Empowerment Method 2.0 Online Course https://www.coachcarriev.com/radicalempowermentmethod2 Get to an EVENT! www.carrievee.com/events Con

“My first day with the Muse was in 2018 and it changed my life, awakened something in me that has brought so much color, solace, movement and pleasure to my soul, and it continues. “ R.A.Dear Ones,I would love to have you join us on Friday for Muse of Magics. This is my only day long class until the late Fall. It will be broadcast live from MUSEA Center in Sonoma with people painting in person. The images above share the evolution of the process we call Intentional Creativity.Painting isn't about painting. Painting is about discovery.Painting good is not the point, at least when you paint with our community. We are in it for the revelation. We are here for the ride. Those who want to learn to paint 'good art' can find lots of teachers to show them how to improve. We aren't here to improve our painting, not at first. We are here to break free.We are here to reveal locked rooms. We are showing up with brush in hand to set caged birds free. We are braving the unknown by diving into the dark recesses of our psyche without a flashlight. Cuz we can. Cuz there is magic in those hidden places. Cuz something has been asking us to wake up even more.Once we get access, there is magic waiting for us.Yes...waiting...as if it was there all the time anticipating our arrival. This process of Intentional Creativity cannot be spoken in words, you have to expeirence it for yourself. You don't need any actual painting experience. You won't need a flashight since what we are looking for isn't something outside, it's something inside. Stop saying you don't have a creative bone in your body, every bone is creative. It may not be 'talented' at painting, but it IS creative. You are creative, we can prove it.The Muse she waits for you. She flirts with you. She scares you into waking up already! She is the part of you that you are often afraid to reveal because she might disrupt your current paradigm. Yet she stirs you through play, through color, through adventure. She isn't gentle though - so be warned she will request your full attention and a day of your life, focused on her medicine. It is always worth it.The Muse, she cracks the critic code just long enough to bypass that part of the brain that keeps you stuck in those loops. So if you are open to something new and you are ready for change that challenges you in fresh new ways. Come on thenDo I think one day can do all that? I don't think so. I know so.But it is for you to find out.Muse of Magics is happening Friday. Make a date with the Muse if you dare. See you in class! It isn't a zoom it is a high quality livestream - wear your pajamas and sunglasses and bring a cuppa tea and chocolate for the Muse! This image shows the evolution of a painting in less then 5 hours. This isn't about good art, this is about feeling GOOD about your self expression and getting messages that are trapped inside, revealed.Shiloh Sophia Get full access to Tea with the Muse at teawiththemuse.substack.com/subscribe
Recently, I attended a Quilt Fest at the Pioneer Hall in Freeman, South Dakota. There were 155 quilts displayed, and the featured quilter was a 94-year-old resident of the Salem home. Throughout her life, she has been involved in the making of hundreds of quilts, and love has turned the patterns into works of art. As I stood there by the Christmas quilt, the wedding ring quilt, and many others, there were many warm thoughts that flashed through my mind. In the many quilts I have given away in my lifetime, I have included this poem entitled "Warm Thoughts.""Love is a quilt. A quilt is love, both love and quilt should be soft enough to comfort you, bright enough to cheer you, generous enough to enfold you, light enough to let you move freely, strong enough to withstand adversity, durable enough to last a lifetime and given gladly from the heart." Perhaps we can even say that God's love is a quilt - bright enough to cheer you and generous enough to enfold you and comfort you. An unknown author has written these thoughts on "Another Comforter." "Overnight visits to Grandma's house were a whole new world. Grandma turning the crank on the butter churn, kneading yeasty homemade bread, ironing on the board placed between two chairs with a flat iron heated on the old wooden stove. Then bedtime came with the long truck up the stairs, strange noises, dark shadows. But grandma would always say, there's an extra comforter on the foot of the bed. What a haven. Just pull that comforter up over my head, and strange noises were shut out. Lurking shadows disappeared. No bright flashes of lightning could be seen, no cold chill could penetrate its warmth. But most of all, every hand stitched piece of that comforter radiated grandma's love and care. And grandma reminds me of God, not only did he send his son for our redemption, He went one step beyond and sent another comforter, a haven for every need, shelter, for every storm, light for our darkest days, healer of our deepest sorrows, and the warmth of his very own love.” A Quilters Song, "Oh, give me a scrap bag filled to the brim with bright bits and pieces. So according to when I might make a rainbow or some butterfly wings, a mountain, a sunset and number of things, I thank you, dear Lord, and make quilts be your praise for the stitches and patches that brighten my days." Barbara Kraun. More Warm Thoughts: Oh Lord, make the scraps of my life something useful. Stitch into my life your own design and use me as you will. May you have many warm thoughts in the good ol summertime! Warm Thoughts from the Little Home on the Prairie Over a Cup of Tea written by Dr. Luetta G. THC drinks have come a long way - they don't taste like someone put a joint out in a beer anymore! Darnell Smith, consultant and entrepreneur, saw these market trends coming together when he founded MXXN, a non-alcoholic thc-infused spirits brand. 0:00 - 15:00 | Algorithmic Nightmares and Artifact Smugglers First doomscroll topic hits hard: Hobby Lobby smuggling ancient artifacts from Iraq. Over 5,000 cuneiform tablets bought under shady labels like “tile samples”. Founder Steve Green's evangelical push via the Bible Museum. Accusations of stealing from Oxford, displaying fake Dead Sea Scrolls. “Where are the actual hobbies at Hobby Lobby?” Theorizing big corporations as fronts—Walmart, Hobby Lobby, even Chuck E. Cheese. Sam jokes about these shady businesses mimicking Vatican-style secret knowledge hoarding. 15:00 - 30:00 | Occult Horror Films and Cultural Reflection Discussion shifts to horror movie occult symbolism. Black horror films and their deep ties to cultural rituals and themes. Jordan Peele's work praised; shoutout to Leprechaun in the Hood. Horror as a genre of affluence—Western culture's need for safe scares. Feminine dominance in horror—women as survivors, not victims. The “final girl” trope; comparisons across Halloween, Alien, etc. Commentary on shifting racial and gender dynamics in horror film tropes. 30:00 - 45:00 | Joey Chestnut vs. Usain Bolt Hypothetical Viral video comparing who'd win: Joey Chestnut eating + sprinting vs. Usain Bolt sprinting after eating. Intense breakdown of eating-to-running ratios. Bolt's athleticism vs. Chestnut's hotdog-devouring speed. Chestnut wins due to a significant head start from fast eating. Sam recognizes creator Evan Hand from Cash Daddy. Florida Man Games gets a mention—love for chaotic American oddities. 45:00 - 60:00 | Freemason Heroes and Controlled Narratives Commentary on dark Freemasonry and the Albert Pike quote about supplying heroes. Social media's role in manufacturing public figures and pushing agendas. DeMolay International as alleged grooming ground for globalist elites—links to Bill Clinton. Tinfoil hat perspective: “Beast System” conspiracy theory laid out. Biblical call to morality closes the segment. 60:00 - 75:00 | Mourning, Glow-Ups, and Freemason Nuance Discussion on a public figure's personal loss and surprising “glow-up”. Mike and Sam discuss how tragedies can shift life trajectory. Sam distances from the full-on Freemason hate: Acknowledges “dark sects” but defends friends in the fraternity. Joke: “Freemasons are the CrossFit of secret societies—they love to talk about it.” 75:00 - 90:00 | Slap Heard Around the NBA & Elder Abuse Allegations Epic NBA story: Charles Oakley slapping Tyrone Hill mid warm-up for unpaid debt. Ref's response: “He owes me money too.” Brief shoutout to classic Knicks era and old-school NBA roughness. Sam reacts to a documentary on elder abuse involving Stan Lee. Accusations of manipulation and exploitation in his final years. Sam stunned by how tragic and common these stories are. The Barbell Mamas Podcast | Pregnancy, Postpartum, Pelvic Health
Have you ever wondered why certain pregnancy myths refuse to die despite lacking scientific evidence? The answer lies in how our digital ecosystem perpetuates misinformation through well-meaning but often unqualified influencers. The motherhood space on platforms like TikTok has become a breeding ground for myths around labor induction and postpartum recovery. When desperate moms-to-be try curb walking or special teas before spontaneously going into labor, they create powerful mental associations between these activities and their outcomes. This saliency effect—attributing results to the most recent notable action—creates the illusion that these methods work, when in reality, baby was simply ready to arrive.Even more concerning is the postpartum recovery space, where influencers showcase remarkable physical transformations while marketing simple programs as the secret to their success. What's conveniently omitted is the foundation that made their recovery possible: years of prior training, home gyms, supportive partners who prioritize fitness, favorable genetics, and fewer responsibilities (particularly with first babies). These privileged circumstances create the perfect environment for rapid recovery that most women simply don't have access to.The fundamental problem is the conflation of personal experience with expertise. As fitness professional Claire from Barbell Medicine perfectly states, "Your experience does not equal your expertise." Without proper education and diverse client experience, these influencers create underdosed, one-size-fits-all programs that fail to deliver promised results for most followers. The consequence? Women blame themselves when they can't achieve influencer-like outcomes, despite diligently following recommendations. This isn't about vilifying well-intentioned creators but encouraging transparency about scope of practice, program limitations, and the many factors beyond exercise that contribute to outcomes. We deserve nuanced conversations about pregnancy and postpartum fitness that acknowledge the complex interplay of genetics, training history, and life circumstances—something impossible to deliver in 15-second sound bites designed to sell programs.Have you encountered fitness myths that seemed too good to be true in your motherhood journey? Correction: JFK was assasinated on 11/22/1963 Ever since the United States rejected hereditary Monarchy, Americans have had a fascination with political dynasties. The Adamses, the Roosevelts, and the Bushes have all become pseudo-royal families with multiple generations in high office. But no clan has embodied this more than the Kennedys. They achieved the American dream, going from penniless Irish immigrants to millionaires and world leaders in 3 generations. But their success has come at a high price. Two assassinations, four plane crashes, a failed lobotomy and numerous other tragedies have haunted this American dynasty. Everyone knows JFK, Jackie and RFK. But today we'll meet all the Kennedy, explore their fascinating connections to Hollywood stars and European aristocrats, and the many tragedies which have lead to the idea of a Kennedy curse. Tea is one of the most widely consumed beverages in the world, second only to water. It comes in many varieties: black, green, white, oolong, and herbal. Tea is celebrated for its health benefits, from antioxidants to its calming effects, and it continues to play a major role in global culture and commerce. In recent decades, tea has experienced a revival in interest, with a growing market for specialty teas, such as artisanal blends, organic teas, and matcha. The modern-day global tea market is vast, and tea continues to evolve as both a daily beverage and a symbol of tradition, health, and innovation. It can solve 3 key problems, particularly in the Himalayas: Urban migration - young folks are moving to megacities in search of work which fragments the family and drives unsustainable urban growth Land degradation - abandoned farmland due to the fragmented family deteriorates into unusable dirt Climate change - increased droughts and floods trigger catastrophic landslides Tea is one clear solution: Tea creates rural jobs and reverses urban migration Tea revitalizes wasted farmland and is an anchor crop for biodiversity Tea leaves drink CO2 which gets stored in their roots and removed from the atmosphere Tea is a gender economic equalizer - And the outcome of what my guest has started is aligned with many of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals Their Vision is to create a sustainable future for Himalayan farmers and their families. Their Mission is to partner with Himalayan communities to raise the quality of their tea, so farmers can earn more and raise the quality of their lives. Young Mountain Tea partners with farmers in North India to get a new factory up and running. Tea farmers, 90% being women, will launch their region's first community-owned tea factory. This factory will be a blueprint for a model of sustainable change in the tea industry, eventually throughout the Himalayas and the world. Building A Sustainable Future For Himalayan Farmers And Their Families is truly a social enterprise. For more information, go to: www.youngmountaintea.com
