Cuomo Goes Third-Party! Democratic Power Vacuums and Death of the Monoculture (with Emily Jashinsky)

Andrew Cuomo is still trying to matter. That's the clearest takeaway from his latest appearance — a campaign reboot so empty and unconvincing it bordered on parody. After blowing a 60-point lead in the Democratic primary for New York City mayor to Zohran Mamdani, Cuomo continues to operate as if he didn't just have — and squander — his best shot. It wasn't a close race. It wasn't an upset. It was a humiliation, and it made Mamdani a star. Cuomo didn't just lose; he handed the spotlight to the person who beat him. What's most baffling is Cuomo's unwillingness to run as anything other than himself. His latest ad is a watered-down version of Mamdani's campaign. Mamdani talked to people across the city about affordability — and even if his ideas were divisive, they were ideas. Cuomo's pitch? Affordability. No vision. No contrast. Just a stale echo of a message he neither originated nor sharpened. If Cuomo wanted to offer something Mamdani couldn't, he had options. He could've leaned into public safety, into the fear felt by many New Yorkers. He could've campaigned from a synagogue, framed himself as the candidate who would safeguard Jewish communities, and tied Mamdani to the left wing of the party in a way that forced a choice. Instead, we got nothing.Politics Politics Politics is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber. There's no attack line, no clear point of differentiation. Cuomo could've said: this is de Blasio 2.0. He could've framed Mamdani as a performance artist backed by a failed administration. He didn't. Instead, he gave voters a lifeless, mimicry-driven campaign with no policy edge. And that brings us to what he is actually running on: his name. For a sliver of voters — the “Cuomosexuals” who liked Mario, liked Andrew, maybe even liked Chris — that might be enough. But for everyone else, Cuomo looks like a man clinging to a legacy that no longer serves him. This also highlights why “Stop ‘X' Candidate” movements almost never work. Ego ruins coordination. Eric Adams isn't dropping out — he's the sitting mayor. Cuomo still acts like running is beneath him. Curtis Sliwa isn't a serious enough contender to pull votes in a general election. And despite the specter of Mamdani's ideology frightening national Democrats, no consensus candidate has emerged. If there were a moderate Republican hedge fund type — pro-choice, socially liberal — that person could shake things up. But they don't exist here. Not this cycle.Ultimately, national Republicans are thrilled. They see Mamdani as a gift. Mike Johnson and Donald Trump will seize on his victory to cast New York as the face of socialism in America — a symbol of excess, decline, and failed progressivism. It's a setup for the midterms. They're ready to prey on any misstep, real or imagined. And unless something changes fast, the ‘Stop Zohran' movement isn't materializing. Not because it couldn't — but because no one in the race knows how to make it happen. Cuomo had his chance. He whiffed.Chapters00:00:00 - Intro00:02:37 - Cuomo Stays in NYC Race00:11:36 - Update00:12:05 - Inflation Report00:15:26 - Recissions Package00:18:45 - Israel00:19:55 - Interview with Emily Jashinsky00:59:15 - Wrap-up This is a public episode. Agency, Communion, and the Dialogical Self

"To what extent is authenticity a solitary alignment with the inner self, versus a relational and dialogical process shaped through communion with others?" John Vervaeke, Gregg Henriques and Matthew Schaublin come together for a discussion covering the concept of authenticity. Matthew Schaublin presents findings from two studies, one of which employs a mixed-methods design to examine the interplay between authenticity, agency, and self-transformation through both narrative analysis and psychometric assessment. The findings reveal that authentic experiences are often marked not by internal self-consistency alone, but by themes of communion, deep relational connection, emotional resonance, and shared understanding. This challenges static, individualistic models of the self and instead supports a dialogical conception in which authenticity emerges through interaction and mutual recognition. The conversation also highlights how current psychological frameworks fail to account for the complexity of lived, meaningful experience. Together, Matthew, Gregg, and John propose a more dynamic, relational, and transjective understanding of selfhood and agency. Gregg R. Henriques is an American psychologist. He is a professor for the Combined-Integrated Doctoral Program at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia, US. Matthew Schaublin is a master's candidate in psychology at the University of Chattanooga, with a four-year research focus on authenticity. His work blends empirical psychology with philosophical and classical inquiry, investigating how dispositional authenticity is expressed and experienced. Send us a textWhat happens when a builder's hands meet a teacher's heart? Travis Webb, VP of Sales at PARQA and father of three nearly-grown children, joins us to share how his unique upbringing created the blueprint for his parenting approach.Travis reveals how his father, a union electrician turned entrepreneur, equipped him with both literal and figurative tools for life – teaching him to build everything from skateboard ramps as a kid to the tiki bar with electricity and plumbing that now stands in his backyard. Meanwhile, his mother's 44-year teaching career instilled in him a patience and calm demeanor that balances his entrepreneurial drive. This blend has shaped not only his successful career in staffing and sales leadership, but also his thoughtful approach to raising three children who are now 23, 21, and 18.The conversation explores a provocative question: can you be friends with your kids? Travis challenges conventional wisdom, suggesting that friendship and accountability aren't mutually exclusive when you know how to "flip the switch" between roles. He shares candid stories about navigating disagreements with his teenage daughter, learning when to engage and when to step back, and prioritizing presence at his children's activities despite demanding work commitments. One particularly insightful moment comes when Casey and Travis discuss a question that transformed both his business and parenting approaches: "Do you want to be right or do you want to get what you want?" This simple but profound question has helped him check his ego and focus on outcomes rather than winning arguments—whether in the boardroom or at the dinner table. As his children transition to adulthood, Travis reflects on the bittersweet reality of watching them leave home while celebrating their independence. For younger parents, his experiences with youth sports, travel tournaments, and building lasting memories offer valuable perspective on what truly matters in the long run.Ready to rethink your approach to leadership—whether at home or in business? She emphasizes the importance of emotional intelligence in family law, effective communication, and maintaining client relationships post-divorce. Katie discusses her leadership philosophy, which focuses on humility, teamwork, and creating a supportive work environment. She advises lawyers to find joy in their work and explore new opportunities if they feel stagnant. The episode concludes with insights on the future of legal practice and the importance of client-centered resolutions.Known for her thoughtful and straightforward approach to family law, Kathryn Homburger Mickelson has distinguished herself among her peers by identifying her individual client's goals and then drawing on her extensive courtroom and mediation experience to bring strategic and empowering representation to each case. By looking at family law issues pragmatically, Ms. Mickelson will craft strategies that will result in resolution that is efficient, expeditious and drama-free. In this podcast we talk about your ego and your business success (or failure). It all started with a real-life case study of a business owner who confessed that his ego destroyed his business. Here are 5 powerful reasons to keep your ego in check when running and growing a business, especially in light of your client's hard-earned lesson: 1. Ego Blinds You to Feedback and Reality When ego runs the show, you stop listening — to your team, your customers, and the market. You believe you're always right, which creates blind spots. This arrogance prevents you from seeing warning signs, adapting, or improving — until it's too late. Reality check: Feedback isn't a threat. It's a mirror and a compass. 2. Ego Destroys Customer Relationships Taking customers for granted, being dismissive, or treating them with contempt stems from a sense of superiority. But in today's market, loyalty is fragile. Ego-driven behaviour drives customers away and tarnishes your reputation - often irreparably. Bottom line: Customers don't care about your ego. They care how you treat them. 3. Ego Undermines Team Culture and Leadership A leader with an unchecked ego breeds fear, resentment, and disengagement. Talented people leave. Collaboration dies. Decision-making suffers. Ego turns leadership into dictatorship, and few want to follow that. Great leaders lift others, not just themselves. 4. Ego Makes You Chase Vanity Over Value Ego wants to look good — big office, flashy numbers, fast growth — even if the fundamentals are weak. You may start chasing awards, status, or size instead of sustainable, customer-driven value. That path leads to burnout, breakdown, or both. Impressing others is a poor substitute for building something that lasts. 5. Ego Blocks Accountability and Growth When things go wrong, ego blames others. But real growth requires ownership, humility, and the courage to say, “I got it wrong.” Without this, mistakes repeat and lessons are never learned. No humility = no growth. Summary takeaway: Unchecked ego is the silent business killer. It alienates customers, erodes culture, distorts priorities, and blocks learning. The best leaders grow their business by shrinking their ego. UPDATED PODCAST FOOTER DECEMBER 2024

Dank daarvoor. Symbolen staan stil. Informatie bestaat door te circuleren. Authenticiteitsdwang Een performancemaatschappij. Een maatschappij van intimiteit en zelfontblooting. Een erosie van de publieke ruimte. Zij valt uiteen in private ruimtes. Informatie is additatief. Onophoudelijk. Send me a text! I'd love to know what you're thinking! In a world that celebrates rapid growth, platform-building, and constant success, it's easy to take on leadership strategies that promise bigger, better, and faster results. But when these approaches clash with the invitation of Jesus to embrace the cross, where does true, lasting influence come from?In this episode, Nicole Massie Martin, author of Nailing It, unpacks the spiritual paradox at the heart of healthy leadership—how surrender, humility, and even seasons of struggle can form us as leaders and empower the people we serve.THIS EPISODE'S HIGHLIGHTS INCUDE:Christian leaders often merge values like maximizing and growing their ministries, risking a "resurrection only" mindset that ignores suffering.Markus Watson highlights that the moments of deepest closeness with God often emerge from times of pain.Nicole Martin frames power neutrally, stating that its impact depends on how leaders use it—to empower or to hoard.Power must be used for God's glory and for empowering others, not for self-aggrandizement.Markus Watson admits that the temptation for influence and control is a real struggle in leadership, even when intentions are good.Nicole Martin explains that surrendering power as a leader looks like developing teams and creating an environment where others feel empowered to fulfill their calling.Nicole Martin shares a personal story of feeling powerless as a board member until another leader affirmed her authority and encouraged her participation.Empowerment should be modeled by leaders who intentionally invite others to use their own power and gifts.Ego is complex and influenced by cultural worldviews such as honor-shame, guilt-innocence, and power-fear.Nicole Martin emphasizes the importance of anchoring one's self-worth in the love of God, not in achievement or shame.Markus Watson describes how personal failure and pain loosened his unhealthy grip on ego and led him to ground his worth in being God's beloved.Nicole Martin asserts that healthy ego in leadership is characterized by deep confidence, humility, and openness, rooted in one's belovedness by God.Leaders must recalibrate their pace and surrender speed to God's timing, resisting the burnout that comes from adopting the relentless pace of the world.RELEVANT RESOURCES AND LINKS:Christianity TodaySoulfire International MinistriesBooks mentioned:Nailing It, by Nicole Massie MartinLife of the Beloved, by Henri NouwenAbba's Child, by Brennan ManningSurrender to Love, by David BennerEmotionally Healthy Spirituality, by Peter ScazeroFalling Upward, by Richard RohrRelated episodes:112. I felt tender, raw, and flat. And it would've been so easy for Steve to pull away or take it personally but instead he stayed close, even when it wasn't comfortable. He loved me through it by holding space for me to be exactly where I was.We speak openly about what that looked like for both of us and how being in different headspaces doesn't have to mean disconnection, if we're willing to communicate from truth and not reactivity.I also share how I told my family: “I'm not okay right now, but I will be. This isn't about you. I'm just in something.” Because I've learned that shutting down or punishing the people I love because I'm in pain only adds more layers to work through. And Steve reflects on how much that honest communication helped him stay connected to me, instead of trying to guess what was wrong or getting defensive. We talk about how far we've come from those reactive “What's up your ass?” kind of moments and how we now use well-framed conversations to navigate tough emotional terrain with love and respect. If you're in a relationship or in a family where one person's heaviness can easily pull the whole ship off course, this episode is for you. It's about holding space, taking responsibility and learning how to stay connected even when you're not in the same headspace.Buy my book, Authentic - coming home to your true self - AUS, EUR, USAJoin Authentic The Program - registrations open nowCoach with me 1:1 - Book a 20-minute call nowThe Good Life - sign up nowFree Wheel of Life Assessment - take the test nowWrite into us - let us know what you want to hearwww.katjohn.com.auSupport the show

Send us a textWhat does it mean to be the quarterback of your family? Charles Manning, founder of Face the World and lacrosse enthusiast, takes us on a deeply personal journey through his experiences as a father, grandfather, and leader in business and sport.Growing up in Australia as one of five siblings, Charles shares how a childhood tragedy transformed his family when his younger brother was hit by a car at age five. Rather than breaking his family apart, this challenge taught Charles profound lessons about empathy, service, and unconditional love that would shape his approach to fatherhood and leadership. "From tragedy quite often comes blessings," Charles reflects, explaining how this pivotal moment ultimately led him to meet his wife and create the life he now cherishes. The conversation dives into the core values that guide Charles as a father – service, abundance, and patience. With remarkable candor, he explores his struggle to overcome what he calls the "Italian fire up" – a tendency toward emotional reactions that he's worked to temper throughout his life. "The higher the emotions get, the lower the level of intelligence is put on the table," he explains, offering a powerful insight for parents everywhere.Perhaps most valuable is Charles's framework for understanding the "drama triangle" and why many parents fall into the trap of rescuing rather than teaching their children. "Our job as a parent is not to rescue, it's to teach," he emphasizes, challenging listeners to become facilitators who help their children develop problem-solving skills. He also introduces the concept of energy givers versus energy takers, providing a lens through which we can evaluate our impact on others.Whether you're early in your parenting journey or reflecting on a lifetime of fatherhood, Charles's wisdom about cultivating curiosity, practicing patience, and leaving a meaningful legacy will inspire you to become not just a better parent, but a better human. Listen now and discover how to lead your family with both strength and heart. Please don't forget to leave us a review wherever you consume your podcasts! See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Despite four decades of illness and disability, he ultimately achieved spiritual realization and restored own health. Meditation provided a pivotal and profound self-discovery when he realized he was not his thoughts or identity.
