Aanleg van hogesnelheidsverbindingen tussen Europese metropolen is een grote prioriteit, waar met veel elan aan gewerkt wordt. Minstens zo'n uitdaging blijken de regelstelsels van de lidstaten die elkaar vaak in de weg zitten. Van nationale seinsystemen tot energiekosten waarbij het vliegverkeer nu nog bevoordeeld wordt. De toerismesector is zeer dynamisch. Er is ruimte voor 1 miljoen meer banen en jong talent. Ook daarom is het uitwisselen van bewezen methoden tussen lidstaten, regio's en steden essentieel. Het aansturen van grote bezoekersstromen in culturele hotspots geeft heel wat steden hoofdpijn. Scheefgegroeid toerisme is geen tijdelijk verschijnsel dat zich vanzelf oplost. Oud-eurocommissaris en oud-landbouwminister Franz Fischler herkent vanuit zijn werk op het hoogste niveau in Brussel veel van zulke uitdagingen, zeker voor 'groene regio's'. Hij was in 1995 de eerste Eurocommissaris uit Oostenrijk, dat pas na akkoord van Gorbatsjov EU-lid kon worden. Hij was ook de eerste commissaris die een 'multinationaal kabinet' samenstelde: zes sherpa’s die hem door de Brusselse beleidsjungle loodsten. Meteen bij zijn start kreeg hij de zwaarste portefeuille: landbouw en rurale ontwikkeling. Hoe zijn land de EU in kwam schildert hij met kleurrijke verhalen. Er was een referendum voor nodig. Toen voorstander Jörg Haider – leider van de radicaal-rechtse Vrijheidspartij – ontdekte dat de Groenen de enige oppositie waren, wendde hij de steven en ging bij Fischlers boerenachterban het anti-Europavuurtje opstoken. Dat mislukte. Hoe dat verliep is ook nu nog leerzaam voor de actuele politiek. In de Europese Commissie zag Fischler hoe Jacques Chirac met Gerhard Schröder de landbouwhervorming torpedeerde die hij later alsnog voor elkaar kreeg. "Een gedegen hervorming lukt alleen als je een goede strategie hebt ontwikkeld. En die moet je publiekelijk niet volledig ventileren, maar stap voor stap realiseren." Fischler vertelt met smaak over zijn belevenissen met collega's als president Romano Prodi, Michel Barnier en Frits Bolkestein. "Die was niet zozeer eurosceptisch als wel een scepticus over heel de mensheid, van nature." Ursula von der Leyen noemt hij ‘een sterkere president’ dan de professorale Prodi, maar een waarschuwing geeft hij wel af. "Ze trekt alle besluitvorming naar zich toe. La Roumanie, pays membre de l'Otan, hausse le ton après qu'un drone russe se soit écrasé cette nuit sur un immeuble résidentiel de la ville de Galați, tout près de la frontière ukrainienne.Ce n'est pas la première fois que des incursions de drones russes ont lieu dans les pays voisins de l'Ukraine depuis le début de l'offensive russe, en février 2022. Elles sont même devenues régulières. Mais c'est la première fois qu'un de ces engins s'abat sur un bâtiment, et c'est également la première fois qu'il y a des blessés dans un pays de l'Alliance atlantique. Selon les autorités, deux personnes ont été touchées et ont reçu des soins. Près de 70 autres habitants ont été évacués et la circulation a été bloquée dans le quartier.L'incident a immédiatement suscité une vague de réactions diplomatiques. De Paris à Varsovie, de Berlin à Bruxelles, les condamnations se sont succédé. L'Otan a dénoncé « l'inconséquence de la Russie ». VOV1 - Trên các nền tảng mạng xã hội, nhiều tính năng như video ngắn tự động phát, thuật toán đề xuất nội dung liên tục hay cơ chế thông báo để giữ chân người dùng trong thời gian dài,... đang khiến trẻ nhỏ dành quá nhiều thời gian trên môi trường số, gây ảnh hưởng tới sức khỏe tinh thần.Trong bối cảnh đó, Liên minh châu Âu (EU) đang thúc đẩy hàng loạt biện pháp mạnh tay hơn, từ điều tra các nền tảng công nghệ lớn, siết trách nhiệm bảo vệ trẻ vị thành niên cho tới yêu cầu thay đổi cách thiết kế sản phẩm số. Liên minh châu Âu đang tăng cường giám sát các nền tảng công nghệ lớn trong khuôn khổ Đạo luật Dịch vụ số (DSA), đặc biệt liên quan tới việc bảo vệ trẻ vị thành niên trên môi trường mạng. Ủy ban châu Âu EC đã mở nhiều cuộc điều tra nhằm vào các nền tảng như TikTok, Instagram và Facebook của Meta hay Snap, xoay quanh các tính năng bị cho là có khả năng gây nghiện, như cơ chế cuộn vô hạn, video tự động phát hay thuật toán đề xuất nội dung liên tục. In this episode of the Explaining History Podcast, we continue our examination of the unfolding crisis in the Persian Gulf—a crisis that has now reached a point where the world may already be past the threshold of avoiding a major economic recession, perhaps even a depression.The situation is grim. Trump, through a combination of staggering incompetence and hubris, has launched America into a conflict it cannot win. The proposed invasion of Kharg Island—Iran's largest refinery—would not bring the Iranians to the negotiating table. It would do what Operation Rolling Thunder and the bombing of North Korea failed to do: it would harden Iranian resolve, because for the regime, this is existential.I explore the historical precedents. The Dardanelles campaign of 1915 shows what happens when great powers attempt to force narrow waterways defended by determined opponents. British and French ships were sunk by mines and coastal batteries; the naval approach was abandoned. The Straits of Hormuz are narrower than the Dardanelles. Any warship that sails through them today would likely be sunk before sunset—not by shore batteries, but by swarms of cheap drones.This is the great inflection point of 21st century warfare. A few hundred drones launched at a carrier group can overwhelm its defensive systems. The era of the aircraft carrier as the unchallenged tool of world order is ending. China has been signalling this for years with its spectacular drone displays over Beijing. The message is clear: "Imagine what we can do if we attach something to them."The geopolitical consequences are already unfolding. Europe is rapidly rapproaching with Russia to secure energy supplies. The Ukraine war will likely be settled in Russia's favour. The special relationship between Britain and America is dying—Rachel Reeves, the British Chancellor, choosing Ursula von der Leyen over Trump was a signal that the political class has finally understood that clinging to American coat-tails no longer offers protection, only entanglement.And then there is Israel. Netanyahu, facing inevitable legal consequences, has a vested interest in perpetual conflict. He has found in Trump a president of almost unimaginable incompetence—one who surrounds himself with informal advisors, ignores professional intelligence, and has torn apart the State Department. This is the gangster state model: don't trust the clever people, because clever people find ways to outwit thugs.Trump is now trapped in a lose-lose scenario. Either he escalates—leading to a Vietnam-style war of attrition that will destroy him and the global economy—or he retreats on Iranian terms. The Iranians will extract very painful concessions: American withdrawal from the Gulf, reparations, a levy on Gulf shipping that will make them extraordinarily wealthy.This is how empires decline. The weeklong “Operation Reclaim and Rebuild” campaign was part of a yearly effort by the Los Angeles Regional Human Trafficking Task Force and 80 local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies. Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna laid out the exact numbers at a news conference, later posted on X. A total of 611 criminal arrests were made and 156 adults rescued as part of the operations, Luna told reporters. In addition, 14 children were rescued from sex trafficking.
