Are processed foods unhealthy? A new study suggests we're divided on how to answer that question. Dr. Neal Barnard of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine is one of the authors of that study. He joins Chuck Carroll on The Exam Room to dive into the results -- and why it matters that Americans are so conflicted about which class of foods are healthy, and which will make you sick. Dr. Barnard will review the most purchased processed foods and identify which are the most and least healthy. He will also go over the results of a PCRM survey showing Americans' opinions on processed foods. Many are unaware that the majority of food that they're eating is ultra processed. But not all processed foods are created equally. This episode is sponsored by The Gregory J. Reiter Memorial Fund, which supports organizations like the Physicians Committee that carry on Greg's passion and love for animals through rescue efforts, veganism, and wildlife conservation. — — SHOW LINKS — — Processed Foods Survey https://bit.ly/procfoodsurvey — — — Gregory J. Muscle health isn't just about how much protein you eat—it's about how your body uses it. And for people with obesity or advancing age, that process can become less effective, even with optimal nutrition. In this episode, I am joined by Dr. Nick Burd, one of the world's leading researchers in muscle metabolism, to unpack the concept of anabolic resistance—when muscle doesn't respond normally to protein and/or exercise. Together, we explore how aging, obesity and even the way foods are combined on your plate can impact muscle remodeling, recovery, and growth. Dr. Burd also shares why plant-based proteins often fall short, why protein efficiency matters more than quantity, and how endurance and resistance training affect nutrient use differently. You'll learn:What anabolic resistance is—and why it matters How to improve protein efficiency and muscle quality over timeWhy food matrix, and timing can change your resultsKey differences in nutrition strategies for endurance vs. strength athletesWhether you're focused on longevity, performance, or helping someone break through a plateau, this episode delivers the research-backed information you've been looking for.Who is Dr. Nick Burd? Dr. Nick A. Burd is a muscle-metabolism scientist and professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he leads the Nutrition & Exercise Performance Research Group. Originally from the Midwest, he trained under renowned experts around the world before focusing his research on how protein and exercise influence muscle health across the lifespan. When most people think about saving the planet, they picture cutting back on meat and eating more plants. But what if the story we've been told about how plant-based diets equate to sustainability is missing half the truth (and hiding a massive environmental cost)? In this episode of the Primal Shift Podcast, I pull back the curtain on the industrial food system most people never see. From the 90 billion honeybees trucked across the country each spring to pollinate almond trees to the 7.3 billion wild animals killed each year by harvest machinery, the data tells a very different story than the slogans. This isn't about pitting vegans against meat-eaters. It's about showing how industrial monoculture destroys soil, collapses insect populations, drains water tables, and kills countless small mammals and pollinators in the name of “clean” eating. If you're ready to rethink food systems from the soil up, this episode is for you.

Guest Michelle Petties is a TEDx speaker, Food Story coach, and author of the award-winning memoir Leaving Large: The Stories of a Food Addict. She reveals how emotional wounds, cultural expectations, and personal history—not hunger—often shape our relationship with food. After battling emotional overeating for decades and gaining and losing over 700 pounds, Michelle discovered that the key to lasting weight loss wasn't another diet—it was rewriting the stories behind her eating. With a background in media sales and leadership at companies like Radio One, Disney/ABC, and NPR/PBS member stations, Michelle now uses storytelling as a tool for transformation. Through workshops, retreats, and her ebook Mind Over Meals, she helps others uncover their food truths, rewire their thinking, and create lasting change from the inside out. Summary Michelle's pivotal "watershed moment" occurred when she realized, after decades of struggling, that food's true purpose is nourishment, not fulfilling emotional needs. This insight, coupled with a powerful family story about inherited food memories, profoundly transformed her relationship with eating. Michelle emphasizes that sustainable weight loss stems from deep internal, mental work—unpacking thoughts, emotions, and beliefs—rather than focusing solely on diet or exercise. Three Important Takeaways Processed Food Addiction: Processed foods are deliberately designed to be addictive, making it extremely challenging for individuals to exert willpower against their engineered palatability and leading to cycles of overeating and weight gain. Beyond Emotional Eating: Eating can be driven by a wide array of emotions beyond stress or comfort, including curiosity, jealousy, the desire for status, or people-pleasing, which often go unrecognized as triggers for unhealthy food choices. Mental Work for Lasting Change: True and sustainable transformation in one's relationship with food and weight loss comes from addressing underlying thoughts, emotions, and beliefs, and viewing food as a source of nutrition. People with Parkinson's disease (PD) may hear, whether through word of mouth or the internet, about herbs or supplements that claim to ease PD symptoms. It's important to recognize that nutritional supplements are not federally regulated, and there is limited research supporting their overall effectiveness. You should always speak with your healthcare provider before starting a new medication or supplement. Nutritional supplements can include herbs, vitamins, or other drugs that are often available without a prescription. Since these products are not formally regulated, there is a high risk for potentially dangerous drug interactions when mixed with other medications, regardless of if they are prescribed by a doctor or available over the counter. In this episode, we speak with Dr. Angela Hill, a pharmacist and professor at the University of South Florida, to better understand the precautions of taking supplements while living with PD. She discusses the potential side effects and risks of taking drugs without fully knowing what's in their ingredients, as well as the warning signs to watch for. She shares tips for reading and evaluating labels and offers guidance on the type of questions to ask a pharmacist to help decide whether the supplement may be a good fit based on your specific health condition. During the episode, Dr. Hill mentions additional resources for evaluating herbal medications and understanding medication timing. Diabetes is one giant math equation, HOWEVER...The entire equation falls to pieces without the correct BASE.Think about it like a skyscraper...If the skyscraper has the tallest structure, it'll look fancy and impressive...But without the proper foundation, the whole thing crumbles the second the wind picks up a little too much. The same is true with blood sugars...You might even think you've got decent control...But without this foundational piece - it could all come crumbling down TODAY.In today's episode, I share exactly that - and from a real life example no less.>> ENJOY!Grab your free ticket to this advanced T1D training here:https://diabetesinaction.com/Purchase your copy of "The Blood Sugar Freedom Formula" book TODAY!https://www.amazon.com/dp/1964811880?psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&ref_=chk_typ_quicklook_imgToDpFree T1D Support Group Here: https://diabetesinaction.com/join-group-1---------Welcome to the Pardon My Pancreas podcast!! If you're eating clean, working out, and still not losing weight… your gut might be the missing piece. In today's episode, I'm breaking down 10 reasons why gut health directly impacts your metabolism, hormones, and ability to lose fat and why testing with a GI MAP could be the game-changer you've been missing. We'll talk about how certain gut infections like H. pylori or parasites keep your body in survival mode, signaling it to hold on to fat. You'll learn how your gut bacteria influence your cravings, blood sugar, and even your metabolism through short-chain fatty acids like butyrate. I'll explain why hidden gut inflammation can block fat loss and how slow digestion (aka not pooping daily) recirculates estrogen and toxins, stalling your progress. We'll also dive into how bad bacteria can steal essential nutrients you need for fat-burning, how gut health affects your thyroid function, and why your gut impacts not just your body, but your brain chemistry and motivation too. Plus, I'll explain why detoxing estrogen properly is key to shedding stubborn fat and how even the “perfect” diet won't work if your gut can't break down food and eliminate waste. This episode will help you see why your gut is the foundation of sustainable weight loss and why it's not just about willpower or cutting calories. If you're feeling stuck, testing your gut might be the missing link to get your body working with you again.
