Amid the ongoing Strait of Hormuz crisis, President Trump has voiced frustration with NATO allies for declining to provide naval or other support, repeatedly calling their position disappointing and suggesting it could damage the alliance long-term. He reiterated that the U.S. does not require their assistance in confronting Iran but questioned whether NATO would ever truly be there for America in a crisis. Such statements have kept the topic of a potential U.S. pullout alive in political discourse. With tensions rising, even low-probability bets on Polymarket reflect the uncertainty. This comes alongside the high-profile resignation of Joe Kent from his role leading the National Counterterrorism Center, where he protested the administration's decision to engage in the Iran war. Javant joins me to talk about his journey to veganism, which began with a major health scare and evolved over many years into a fully vegan lifestyle. We discuss how he moved from trying different diets to embracing whole-food plant-based eating, and how that shift eventually expanded beyond health to include empathy for animals and compassion for people who aren't vegan. Javant also shares details about his new cookbook, which focuses on familiar comfort foods made vegan, oil-free, gluten-free, and free of refined sugar. We get into his philosophy around helping people eat more plants without feeling deprived, his thoughts on fibre versus protein, and why gut health deserves way more attention than it gets. We also talk about the four pillars of health he teaches through his app: diet, exercise, sleep, and mindset.

What are past and future tripping, and what you can do to live in the moment.
On this episode we are tackling the cultural and political shift back to meat, saturated fat, high-protein diets and the connection to hyper-masculinity. The US is seeing a resurgence of meat-eating as a symbol of masculinity, masculinism, meat connected to identity politics and the “culture wars”. Our guest, Jan Liband, will explore the social factors driving this backlash and explore how social media, economic uncertainly, and fear are motivating this trend. Jan and Hope talk about how toxic masculinity, a toxic subsidized meat economy, and a response to progressive advancements are components propelling the meat-heavy movement. They also talk about the pervasive myths around meat, protein, and muscle building, and how these affect men in particular. There are strong phycological factors at play that are embedded in our culture and are resurfacing in our current political climate. Jan Liband is a fact-based environmentalist, public speaker, and former Silicon Valley veteran who has been vegan since the 1980s. He has an academic background in psychology plus decades in marketing and has studied our shifting attitudes towards food and the growing environmental and health impacts of our global food system for decades. Jan volunteers for several vegan and environmental organizations and serves as Chief Researcher and Speaker for Plant-Based Advocates, a Bay Area based non-profit and is a board member of Compassionate Living. In addition to advocacy, Jan is an accomplished athlete, martial artist, and professional musician who holds a degree in Psychology from U.C. Drones freak out animals in ways that probably most of us don't realise...and they've helped highlight atrocities against animals, nudging the dial towards a vegan world much more quickly. So what should our stance be on them, as vegans? And what policies should follow? In this episode of Vegan Talk, Mark, Rich & Ant discuss all things drone vs animal, using an article from Wild Beim Wild as a starting point: https://wildbeimwild.com/en/impact-of-drones-on-wildlife/As ever, we love hearing your views on the topics under discussion (or anything else!) so do drop us your thoughts via enoughofthefalafel@gmail.com*************Enough of the Falafel is a community of people who love keeping on top of the latest news in the world of veganism & animal rights. With the Vegan Talk podcast, we aim to develop listeners' (& our own) thoughts around key issues affecting veganism & the animal rights movement; giving our opinions, whilst staying balanced; remaining true to our vegan ethics, whilst constantly seeking to grow & develop. Each week we home in on one topic in particular and pick it apart in more detail. If you have a suggestion for a future show, do get in touch via enoughofthefalafel@gmail.com.*******************Thanks everyone for listening; give us a rating and drop us a message to say "hi"; it'll make our day!Mark, Richard & Anthony

Why do people get so angry about vegan food? Why do the same illogical arguments about meat keep showing up over and over again? And what happens when someone finally starts dismantling them… one by one? Today on Food Heals, Allison Melody is joined by plant-powered content creator Danny Ishay, Instagram's favorite vegan. If you've ever heard someone say: “Humans need meat for protein.” “It's the food chain.” “Plants feel pain.” …and you've wanted to stick a carrot in their face and ask who actually feels pain, Danny has probably already made a video about it. Using logic, satire, and a little sass, Danny has built a massive following by calmly dismantling the myths people cling to about meat, dairy, and vegan diets. In this episode we talk about how he got started, why humor works better than yelling, and what really happens when trolls flood his comment section. You'll hear: • Why comedy disarms people faster than confrontation • What actually happens when trolls show up in Danny's comments • The psychology behind why people defend meat so passionately • What made Allison say, “Follow the money.” • Why misinformation about nutrition spreads so easily • The surprising role community plays in sticking with a plant-based lifestyle If you've ever had one of these debates at a dinner table, in a comment section, or with that one friend who swears they “need meat for protein”… This episode might change the way you respond at next year's Thanksgiving. Does saying “I'm vegan” feel uncomfortable? Does “plant based” feel empty? This episode breaks down why that reaction is so common—and how a few behavioral science concepts can help you stay regulated in social situations, and keep moving forward without needing to be “audit-ready.”In this episode, you'll learn:Why “vegan” can feel like an identity label with social consequences (not just a food preference)The Spotlight Effect: why your brain overestimates how much other people notice youDo-gooder derogation: why ethically motivated choices can trigger defensiveness in others (even when you're being calm and low-key)Why “plant-based” can feel easier to say—and what you gain/lose with each termThe 3 conditions that help change actually stick (from Self-Determination Theory):Autonomy: it feels like your choiceCompetence: you feel capableRelatedness: you feel connected, not isolatedSimple “in-the-wild” scripts to use when the V word gets caught in your throatWhy consistency beats purity, especially in the early awkward phaseListener practice for the week:Try one “label-light” sentence one time, in the wild:“I don't eat animal products.”“I'm vegan—no stress, I'll find something.”“I'm trying to eat vegan.”“I'm keeping it plant-based today.”You're not doing this for other people's comfort. You're doing it to keep yourself regulated while you learn, experiment, and build a practice that lasts.Key takeaway:That awkward, self-conscious feeling isn't proof you're doing it wrong. It's a normal human response to belonging and identity—and it gets easier with practice.Subscribe & Review:If you enjoyed this episode, please subscribe and leave a review on your favorite podcast platform. Vegan Joy: Joy Is Revolutionary "As I tell my students on the first day of my animal studies class: "Drop this class. Trust me, drop this class. You do not want to know what I know. I do not want to know what I know; no one wants to know what I know." So how, then, can I talk about vegan joy? Because vegan joy is how we win." What if your core wounds aren't things to conquer, but parts of yourself that just need to be seen, heard, and understood? And what if the reason manifestation feels effortless in your imagination but impossible in action has nothing to do with motivation…and everything to do with your nervous system? This week, Jessica sits down with somatic therapist and parts work expert Sarah Baldwin for a conversation that will completely reframe how you understand manifestation. Together, they explore why your nervous system calls the shots on what you attract, and how the self-protective patterns you developed as a child are quietly keeping you from stepping into your purpose, relationships, visibility, and expansion as an adult. Using Somatic Experiencing & Internal Family Systems (IFS) and spiritual practices, Sarah explains how our minds are made up of different "parts" — inner voices or emotional states, each with their own fears and roles. The parts that learned to protect you in childhood don't disappear; they keep running in the background, quietly shaping what you believe you're allowed to have. Unblocking starts with getting curious about those parts rather than fighting them, and learning to become a loving, attuned parent to your inner child. With nervous system regulation and parts work, you'll move through fear without forcing it, gradually expanding your capacity to hold more goodness. If manifestation feels clear in theory but sticky in practice, this episode will show you why, and guide you in softening the walls that have been keeping you from the life you've been waiting for. Craving bold flavor without the burnout—or the meat? We sit down with award-winning plant-based chef and author Adina Mullen to explore how global traditions make vegan cooking abundant, joyful, and deeply satisfying. From childhood vegan roots to a self-taught path through restaurant kitchens and two bestselling cookbooks, Adina shows how food can carry memory, culture, and ethics on one plate. We dig into the big questions people ask about plant-based eating: what's the real difference between “vegan” and “plant-based,” how much protein do you actually need, and can beans, tofu, tempeh, and nuts truly deliver? Adina breaks down flavor the way a traveler maps a city—aromatics first, spices toasted, textures layered—so each bite hits with balance and depth. She explains how to honor the soul of traditional dishes when swapping animal proteins for plants, preserving spice profiles, cooking methods, and the role the dish plays in its home culture. If you've ever felt intimidated by global recipes or worried that plant-based means bland, this conversation is your permission slip. Adina shares practical ways to start: build a small spice library, batch-cook beans and grains, and use simple techniques to amplify taste. Her travel stories—from Italy's quiet precision to Morocco's layered heat and Turkey's vibrant markets—turn into everyday guidance you can use tonight. And yes, we celebrate comfort too, with fan favorites like a crackling Dutch oven bread that pairs perfectly with a hearty stew.Ready to cook with confidence and curiosity? Hope is hosting Compassionate Living's Humane Hoax Online Conference on March 17, 2026 and to entice you to register, we are replaying a fantastic conversation from Episode 81 on humanewashing in journalism. Lisa Barca is one of the 18 contributing authors to Hope's anthology The Humane Hoax: Essays Exposing the Myth of Happy Meat, Humane Dairy and Ethical Eggs and they had an insightful conversation that we wanted to share again. The theme of this year's Humane Hoax Online Conference is language and narrative, so this conversation reflects our focus for the conference and we hope that you will register! The link is below. Lisa has fascinating insights into the portrayal of farmers, farmed animals, and our relationship to animals in her chapter and discusses them with Hope in this conversation. She explains the “absent referent,” or the erasing or hiding of animal's identities and how it relates to the humane hoax. She also talks about how the new “humane” do-it-yourself slaughter normalizes violence toward animals and she offers advice to journalists, and to us all, on language that helps the animals to be seen and heard in media stories about them.Lisa Barca is a lecturer in the Honors College at Arizona State University, where she teaches humanities, writing courses, and seminars on the ethics of humans' relationships with other animals. Her current research centers on critical animal studies, media ethics, rhetoric and ideology, and the intersections of feminism and animal rights. She holds a Ph.D. in Romance Languages and Literatures and is a contributing author to the volume Meatsplaining: The Meat Industry and the Rhetoric of Denial and also to The Humane Hoax: Essays Exposing the Myth of Happy Meat, Humane Dairy, and Ethical Eggs.Resources:Humane Hoax Online Conference InformationConference RegistrationOrder Hope Bohanec's Book: The Humane Hoax: Essays Exposing the Myth of Happy Meat, Humane Dairy, and Ethical Eggs

Is veganism in its flop era? There was a time when veganism – or plant-based food – seemed to be in ascendency: from the early 2010s when Beyoncé adopted a plant-based diet to its height in 2020, when the retail market for plant-based meat made over a billion dollars in sales. And then… things started getting a little more… meaty. From protein-maxxing to the new food pyramid, the culture seems to have shifted. But what does the plant-based food flop era say about our culture, how we think about our food, and how we feel about our future? Special guest host Danielle Kurtzleben, NPR political correspondent, discusses with writer Rachel Sugar, who wrote a piece on the boom and bust of veganism for New York Magazine, and Mark Bittman, long-time food journalist and former New York Times columnist who has written about veganism since the early 2010s.Support Public Media. Picture two plates. One has leafy greens, colorful vegetables, berries, salmon, whole grains, olive oil, and water. The other has a big steak, butter, and whole milk. Both reflect official government dietary recommendations. But here's the twist: one plate represents what Canada, Sweden, Germany, China, the Netherlands, and India all basically agree on. The other comes from just one country—a country that looked at the same nutrition science and went in a completely different direction.Which country? And why?In Part 3 of our Dietary Guidelines series, Amy takes you on a global tour to uncover why the new U.S. food pyramid is a stark outlier from international consensus. She reveals what happened to the 400-page scientific report from 20 independent researchers—and why industry groups are celebrating while scientists are raising concerns. You'll discover:Why the food pyramid was retired 15 years ago—and why it's suddenly backWhat Sweden, Germany, the Netherlands, and other European countries actually recommendWhy China and India's guidelines look nothing like the new U.S. pyramidHow Canada created a science-based guide that aligns with the MIND diet for brain healthThe specific foods that can reduce Alzheimer's risk by up to 53%Plus, Amy shares her free printable MIND Diet wallet card and gives you three actionable steps to put this episode into practice. If you've been confused by the new dietary guidelines, this episode will give you clarity—and a clear path forward for your brain health.
Have you seen the new 2025-2030 Dietary Guidelines for Americans and wondered if you should follow them? You may have seen talk about them on the news and social media, and don't know quite what to believe. The slogan of eating more ‘real foods' sounds good though, and the New Pyramid diagram seems to show that all foods - including butter, steak, whole milk and cheese – would be fine to eat and that we don't really need to worry about the amounts eaten. But DO we need to worry? And what about the recommendations about protein and nutritional adequacy issues in vegan and vegetarian diets? Let's talk about this. In this episode, we'll take a deeper dive into the New Dietary Guidelines for Americans and look at 3 more KEY things you need to know about them, to inform your own health. We'll touch on protein, what the Guidelines say about vegan and vegetarian diets, and what has been found through research. Listen in!
