Self-care isn't a luxury — it's your foundation. Today, we explore why self-care can feel so uncomfortable (especially for those of us used to being the strong one), and how to start building your tolerance for pleasure, rest, and receiving. These are the same micro-practices that have transformed my relationship with myself and my energy over time. Here are the truths I keep learning again and again:
You've heard the false teachings. You've read the posts. You've seen the statements of faith declaring, “Marriage is between one man and one woman.”This episode is for every LGBTQ+ person harmed by those words — and for every Christian parent who affirms their child, yet still hears that sentence reverberating through their church, their family, and their faith.Let's be clear: no one should believe the Bible condemns them — or their child — because of that claim.Because it isn't biblical. It isn't historical. And it isn't truth. In today's episode, we expose the lie and shatter the myth of “traditional marriage” and the fantasy of the "perfect" family — replacing it with what Scripture actually reveals: love, covenant, justice, and grace.Beloved, this truth belongs to you!Send us a private message. *Note: INCLUDE YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS if you'd like us to answer. :-) Support the show

A friend said something to me a few months ago (while I was complaining) that stopped me in my tracks: “Everyone wants a village — but nobody wants to be a villager.”And once I heard it, I couldn't un-know it. So many of us (AKA, me!) say we want deeper friendships, stronger community, people who show up for us… yet we're participating in a culture that prioritizes convenience, hyper-independence, comfort, and productivity over closeness. We've optimized ourselves out of connection. We interact with services, not people. We protect our peace so hard, we don't even consider the needs of others. We complain about loneliness and how hard it is to make friends as adults, but most people opt out of the effort and inconvenience that comes with community and togetherness. So today, we're unpacking the loneliness epidemic, the friendship recession, and what modern society is getting wrong about community-building. Most importantly, we cover how to actually be a villager, even when you're busy, burnt out, uncomfortable, or socially awkward. We weren't meant to do life alone. And the village you're looking for might start with you.If you've been craving deeper friendships, more support and belonging, and being a part of something bigger than yourself, this episode is your reminder that community is built through effort, presence, generosity, and a willingness to be inconvenienced for the sake of care and connection.Tune in to hear:What it really means to “be a villager” (and why closeness comes at a cost)The role convenience culture plays in loneliness and isolationThe mental and physical health benefits of strong social tiesWhy self-care is overrated, because healing isn't a solo sportHow to start building your village through consistent micro-connectionsReciprocity, generosity, and why community is about equity, not equalitySaying yes more, and becoming a supportive attendeeHow to avoid social burnout and people-pleasingHow to show up as a village leader (the art of hosting and building what doesn't exist)Taking social risks and dealing with rejectionLetting yourself show up imperfectly — messy house, bad mood, and all Sign up for our monthly adulting newsletter:teachmehowtoadult.ca/newsletter Follow us on the ‘gram:@teachmehowtoadultmedia@gillian.bernerFollow on TikTok: @teachmehowtoadultSubscribe on YouTube

In this solo kickoff to 2026, Christina reflects on the creative resistance she's been feeling and how even positive routines, like her nearly six-year streak of daily walks, can start to create stagnation. A podcast reminded her that growth often requires breaking our own patterns. That insight collided with a pop-culture moment (yes, the Brooklyn Beckham drama) to spark a bigger conversation about how social media pressures us to perform, exaggerate, and air conflict publicly. Her takeaway: real alignment comes from personal responsibility, knowing what you stand for, and not feeling obligated to fight every battle for the sake of optics. If you've been diagnosed with ADHD, or you suspect you might have it, listen in on this episode of the Awaken Your Wise Woman podcast as host Elizabeth Cush and Dr. Jennifer Dall talk about unmasking neurodivergence and managing it holistically. Are you often forgetful? Do you pile lots on your plate, but have a tough time following through with all of it? Do you have a hard time getting organized? Do you beat yourself up about all of it or do you put your nose to the grindstone and work twice as diligently to be who you think you're supposed to be? If any of that sounds familiar, go easy on yourself. In this episode of Awaken Your Wise Woman, host Elizabeth “Biz” Cush, LCPC, a licensed professional therapist, founder of Progression Counseling in Maryland and Delaware, and a soul guide for highly sensitive women, welcomes Jennifer Dall, EdD, a grief-informed neurodivergence specialist and founder of ADHD Holistically, for a discussion of women and ADHD (attention deficient hyperactivity disorder). They'll talk about myths and misconceptions, diagnosing ADHD later in life, management strategies and more. “A lot of people think ADHD is the 8-year-old boy who is impulsive and hyperactive and not the good girl who is focusing and smart and working really, really hard.” — Jennifer DallFind all full show notes and resources for every episode here.Support the showI hope you enjoyed the show! You feel it when your estranged (or formerly estranged) adult child is in the room. The conversation is surface-level. You second-guess everything. You remind yourself, "I have to be careful." "Walking on eggshells" is a common experience for parents of estranged adult children, especially during the reconciliation phase of estrangement. Parents might not know exactly why their child became distant, but they want to keep it from happening again. Some parents feel afraid of making their child angry. They desperately want to avoid conflict, even while wishing for more closeness. They're caught between fear and longing. Almost all parents feel awkward after estrangement, as they embrace different skills and behaviors for the first time. The journey from "conscious incompetence" to "conscious competence" and beyond, can be long. Ongoing tension can be expected after estrangement, in the context of your personal history. And there may be no getting around that walking-on-eggshells feeling for a while. But parents who can recognize, understand, and tolerate it might have an easier time. It feels like everyone is talking about self care these days. But what's it actually supposed to look like? If you ask the TikTok algorithm, you'll get a lot of 12-step skincare routines, bullet journals and red light masks. But is self care really just about what you buy? Today, our guest Dr. Pooja Lakshmin is going beyond consumerism to talk about how we can add value to our lives...without swiping our credit cards. She's unpacking key lessons from her bestselling book REAL Self Care—from effectively setting boundaries, letting go of self-judgement, and using gratitude to get through even the darkest times. Controlled falling, cadence, and the mental roadblocks that stop runners — Coaches Caroline & Valerie explain how to train the fall, recover from fear-driven movement mistakes, and use simple drills to run lighter and pain-free.✅ Key takeaways ✅ Controlled falling (not leaning) reduces impact and improves cadence. ✅ Start with drills (wall, bands, short hops) and build balance before chasing 180+ cadence. ✅ If fear appears — stop, reset, practice balance — don't reach with the front foot. ✅ Transfer drills to running gradually and seek live feedback for faster, safer progress.▶️ Free 30-Day RunRX Reboot - Skill, Strength & Self-Care https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a0N-GZ0AosI&list=PLDPcF8ZrDdILC8bYyn2zR-4xvqKRzp2re ▶️ Join the RunRX Membership https://runrx.fit/join-runrxstrong
Dating someone with covert narcissistic traits rarely feels abusive at first. In fact, it often feels intoxicating—intense attention, deep emotional connection, and a sense of being chosen in a way you may never have experienced before. This episode explores why that intensity feels so powerful—and why it so often turns confusing, controlling, and unsafe. In this deeply honest conversation, Jacquie Roar shares her personal story of navigating covert narcissism in a dating relationship. She talks openly about love bombing, emotional manipulation, isolation, and how her sense of self slowly eroded long before she had words for what was happening. Like many survivors, she believed the problem was something she could fix—if only she tried harder, loved better, or showed more understanding. Together, we explore how covert narcissistic abuse impacts the nervous system, why leaving can feel harder than staying, and why the aftermath often includes depression, grief, and intense self-doubt rather than immediate relief. Jacquie also speaks about the moment that changed everything—when survival became more important than hope—and how healing required learning to accept healthy love after chaos. This episode is for anyone who has ever questioned themselves after a relationship ended and wondered: Why did it feel so good at first? Why did I get smaller over time? Why did peace feel unfamiliar after I left? You are not weak. You were responding to a dynamic designed to confuse, bond, and control. This conversation offers clarity, validation, and hope—without pressure, judgment, or diagnosis. Hello Beautiful, I'm so grateful you're here with me.
Ever feel your team is waiting on you for every decision while your vision work gathers dust? We sat down with Shirley Williani, founder and CEO of A la Carte Solutions, to unpack the precise tools and hiring moves that remove a CEO from the approval queue and put momentum back into the business. Shirley shares how a sabbatical sparked hard feedback from her team, the wake-up moment that she was the bottleneck, and the simple decision matrix that reshaped accountability overnight. We dig into the matrix itself—two axes, consequence and reversibility—and how to sort choices into “decide,” “decide and inform,” and “consult the CEO.” You'll hear real examples, from client discounts to system changes, and how those rules gave managers confidence while freeing Shirley to focus on vision, culture, sales, and marketing. The conversation also reaches upstream to the talent pipeline: why “lifestyle change” candidates often lack urgency, how to spot motivated applicants with probing, story-rich questions, and what a rigorous nine-step recruiting process can do for retention and performance.Shirley also traces her journey from KPMG and a CFO seat to launching a fractional accounting model when a client wanted a unicorn hire. That structural insight—match roles to actual skills—echoes through her leadership playbook. Chloë Crampton was told she was "too young for cancer." She wasn't. Diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer at 32 with no family history, Chloë had to fight to be taken seriously. She refused the standard chemo protocol, kept her hair through cold capping, and threw herself into food as medicine. In this conversation, she shares how green juicing, anti- inflammatory eating, and clean swaps helped her heal, and why young women need to advocate for their health when doctors won't listen

We've all heard the phrase “Put your own oxygen mask on first.” While that might seem counterintuitive, this important safety instruction is a powerful metaphor for self-care: You must secure your own well-being before you can effectively help others. Too often, parents and caregivers put their own needs on the back burner as they care for their children and families, leaving them stressed and burned out. In the latest episode of our Parent Talks podcast, we chat with Encompass Pediatric Therapy Director Megan Walsh. We discuss how we can recognize our body's signals for help, and tips for finding relief and support so we can be our best selves for the people we love.

You've heard it repeated by nonaffirming Christians and right-wing politicians: “traditional values.”But listen closely — and notice what's missing.Honesty. Fidelity. Compassion. Justice. Kindness. So what are “traditional values,” really? Whose tradition are we talking about? From which era? From which culture? From which Bible — and whose Christianity? In this episode, we expose the myth of “traditional values,” how the phrase became a political weapon instead of a moral compass, and what real, Jesus-shaped values actually demand of us.Send us a private message. *Note: INCLUDE YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS if you'd like us to answer. :-) Support the show

The New Moon in Capricorn is helping you set some intentions for how to you want to show up in the world right now. With all the chaos it's important to lock in on how you want to take care of yourself so you can continue to show up for yourself, your family, your community. Right now the planets are clustered together moving like cars on a train from late Capricorn to early Aquarius. They're making the same transits to the same outer planets. This energetic bottleneck is forcing us to focus on just 1-2 things. It's a powerful way to "dictate your fate," as the choices and changes you make today will likely have long standing impact. Fortunately, the shift from Capricorn to Aquarius helps us take in the big picture view. Capricorn likes to build and maintain the structures and norms. Aquarius likes to ask if those structures are necessary and how can they be improved? In a way this moment in a microcosm of the 20 year cycle that began in 2020 when Jupiter met Saturn at 0° Aquarius. The most notable of the transits this week are the conjunctions with Pluto. As Venus, Mercury, the Sun, and Mars join with the planet of power and transformation our survival instincts will be kicked up. How do you respond when it really matters? How do you engage when things are uncertain or even frightening? It might seem easier to just be passive and hope this moment will be over soon, but we're not living through ordinary times. It's easier to lock into the support systems you know you will need now, then to try to create them once Saturn and Neptune enter Aries. We're not getting off this ride until 2028, so what do you need to put in place now to be safe, secure, and capable of showing up in the way that you are meant to show up in the world. (2:30) Get Vinnie's e-book because it's a good reminder of getting back on track if you went off the rails during the holidays, or, of course, if you are new to NSNG®. (6:00) You can purchase the NSNG® E-book for a small fee at https://nsng.vinnietortorich.com/product/intro-to-nsng/ What meats can you eat? What are the possibilities? (12:30) It's not required that you eat grass-fed or organic meats—eat what you can afford. Many times, you can find a local small farmer and buy a portion of beef or pork at a discount. What about processed meats like bacon, salami, and cold cuts? (18:00) How bacon is cured makes a difference. (19:00) Cold cuts can be acceptable on occasion, but they often have additives. Eggs are a fantastic food—completely nutrient-dense! (26:00) Good, real, whole milk cheeses, kefir, and full-fat Greek yogurt are all great choices. Don't be afraid of real heavy cream. Try to find one without any additives, if possible. Vinnie emphasizes that you can't eat *anything* with impunity, meaning you can't go rogue and overeat, even if you're eating healthy options. (20:00) Moving on to vegetables and fruits. (32:30) Leafy greens and cruciferous vegetables are your best bet. Onions and peppers are great, too. Enjoy savory fruits like avocado, tomatoes, and olives, but they also discuss citrus, berries, and eating fruit in season. (35:00) Nuts: High-fat nuts like pili and macadamia are the best; however, you can enjoy some others, but be careful—it doesn't take many to overdo them. (46:00) If you are trying to be vegan on NSNG, beans are a better source of nutrients than grains. If you are a vegetarian, eating eggs, cheese, and nuts is recommended to boost your protein intake. The Sweet Stuff They chat about "sweet treats." (53:00) Reducing your intake of sweet treats will change your taste buds for the better. Anna explains the intention behind including sweet treats in her cookbooks. They are meant to be just that—a treat for an occasion! Stay away from "grain-free" chips! They are made from ingredients like cassava and other root flours, which are very high in carbs. Episode 2750 - Vinnie Tortorich and Chris Shaffer help start your fitness plan with the benefits of cardio vs. strength training and where you should begin. https://vinnietortorich.com/2026/01/cardio-vs-strength-training-episode-2750 PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS Pure Vitamin Club Pure Coffee Club NSNG® Foods VILLA CAPPELLI EAT HAPPY KITCHEN YOU CAN WATCH THIS EPISODE ON YOUTUBE - @FitnessConfidential Podcast Vinnie's workout videos are available to purchase! TO PURCHASE VINNIE'S WORKOUT VIDEOS, CLICK THIS LINK workout videos Cardio vs. Strength Training Where does a beginner start? (5:00) Just start with what you know you can do. If you are sedentary, start with a short walk and gradually increase it each time. Your aerobic vs anaerobic capacity is different things. (9:00) Vinnie gives a list of the variety of things that qualify as each. There are different benefits to cardio and strength training. (17:00) What is recommended? Picking one focus and sticking to it (for example, cardio), or finding a balance between cardio *and* strength training to start? (22:00) Vinnie shares his brother Mark's journey. (23:00) Sometimes, you really do have to start with "baby steps" and grow into the routine. Vinnie likes to consider Zone 2 (70-80% of your cardiac capacity) as cardio; however, if someone is starting, any walk will help them get started. (36:00) In strength training, it can be intoxicating to feel yourself get stronger. (39:00) You will feel the strength before you start seeing visible gains. (43:00) The Zones Vinnie describes the Five Zones; however, you only need to pay attention to four of them. (47:30) The calculation to find Zone 2 (with the Maffetone method) is: 180 - (your age) = desired heart rate, or beats per minute. If you are already active, you can add about five more points to the desired heart rate. Before starting any exercise program, it is highly recommended that you see your doctor first and have a stress test. If you are eating correctly, such as with NSNG®, exercise will help build lean muscle mass. (59:00) More is not always better; sometimes, more recovery is better. (1:01:00) Vinnie recommends 4 or 5 hours a week for cardio, unless you are training for a marathon or similar competition.
