She and her husband joined a comedy show. (3:00) Traveling can be a challenge, but make it a game for yourself. Anna shares some of the things she did to stay NSNG. UCDavis has recently released a study on the purity of avocado oil products. (32:00) UCDavis.edu https://www.ucdavis.edu/food/news/study-finds-82-percent-avocado-oil-rancid-or-mixed-other-oils They reviewed many popular brands of processed mayo, dressings, and snacks. Anna has a one-minute mayo recipe that you can find on her Substack: Eat Happy Kitchen One-Minute Mayo The UC Davis study found that 48 of the 54 avocado oil labeled products were adulterated with cheaper oils. A large percentage were either rancid and/or adulterated with other oils. (44:00) Not all manufacturers may have known they were receiving adulterated oils. Anna shares some of the products on the list. If the product is "compositionally consistent with authentic oil", then the oil's rating was noted with a checkmark. (47:00) Vinnie briefly speaks about his 45th high school reunion. (57:00) He noticed a big difference between his 20th and 45th reunions. Of everyone who showed up, they looked great. Monday Morning Anxiety — Calm the Dread of the Week Ahead | Vagus Nerve Breathing Meditation Monday morning anxiety has a weight all of its own — that heavy, anticipatory dread that arrives before your feet have even touched the floor. In this 10-minute guided meditation, Calming Anxiety host Martin helps you put the whole week down and meet Monday with a nervous system that is working with you, not against you. Today's practice uses vagus nerve breathing — a slow nasal inhale, a gentle hold, and a long, soft exhale — to press the brake pedal on your stress response. Three guided rounds, followed by a warm golden-light body scan and a set of gentle affirmations for anxiety relief, work anxiety and the Sunday scaries that spill into Monday. It closes with three practical daily caring tips you can carry into the day. Whether you're listening in bed, on the train, in the car park, or in the ten quiet minutes before you walk in through those doors — this is deep relaxation and breathwork you can use anywhere. Waking Up at 3am — Anxiety Relief to Get You Back to Sleep | Extended Exhale Breathing Waking up at 3am with anxiety is one of the loneliest experiences there is — your eyes open on their own, your heart is faster than it should be for someone lying perfectly still, and your mind has already found the one unfinished thought it saved up especially for now. This 10-minute guided meditation is built for exactly that hour. Martin explains why it happens: there is a small, ordinary rise in cortisol in the early hours meant to get your body ready for morning, and when you're anxious that rise arrives a little louder and wakes you. It isn't a warning. It isn't a sign. It's chemistry arriving early. From there the session uses extended exhale breathing — a gentle breath in, a brief pause, and an out-breath always longer than the in — because breathing out directly, mechanically slows your heart rate. It's the simplest somatic tool there is, and the one that works best lying down in the dark, when you don't want to count hard or hold anything. A warm light at the centre of the chest, gentle affirmations for sleep anxiety and insomnia relief, and three practical caring tips follow. If you drift off partway through, that's the point — let the voice fade. Hosted by clinical hypnotherapist and former paramedic Martin Hewlett. ⏱️ Time Chapters * 00:00 – Cold open: awake at three in the morning* 00:39 – Why you wake: the early-hours cortisol rise* 01:23 – Welcome to Calming Anxiety with Martin* 01:39 – Anchored: the nightlight and offline sleep sessions* 02:24 – Settling: letting the pillow take the weight* 03:36 – Extended exhale breathing: the science* 04:17 – Guided rounds: longer out than in* 05:37 – A warm light at the centre of your chest* 06:08 – Tonight's gentle affirmations* 08:19 – Drifting off, or coming gently back* 09:01 – Your three daily caring tips* 09:43 – Closing thoughts and sign-off

Why Do I Say Sorry for Everything? — People-Pleasing Anxiety Relief | Guided Meditation with 4-2-6 Breathing If you've ever wondered "why do I say sorry for everything?", from bumping into someone to simply having a feeling, today's guided meditation is for you. Calming Anxiety sits with the quiet, exhausting reflex of chronic apologizing, the fear that if you're agreeable enough, easy enough, small enough, nobody will ever be angry with you. We slow the body first with 4-2-6 breathing, in for four, hold for two, out for six, creating the same small pause Martin often had to teach frightened patients as a paramedic: the space between the trigger and the reaction. For daily support beyond this episode, download Anchored on iOS, with Android arriving in a couple of weeks.

TO PURCHASE VINNIE'S WORKOUT VIDEOS, CLICK THIS LINK: https://vinnietortorich.com/workout Guidelines and GLP-1s Dr. Gary Fettke was in Vinnie's first documentary, "FAT: a documentary." They discuss how dietary messaging has changed over the years. (8:00) Whole foods, including animal proteins, are the optimal way to get nutrients. (15:00) They discuss CGMs and how helpful they can be for awareness of what certain foods do to your blood glucose. (20:30) Your body responds to everything you eat; however, some foods raise glucose levels more than others. A CGM can help you discover your personal response and bioindividuality. They discuss the U.S. Food Pyramid and RFK's take on it. Following the previous dietary guidelines has not helped; in fact, it seems to have made things worse. For example, approximately 40% of the U.S. military members are overweight because of food served in military commissaries. (32:00) The Magic Pill documentary is fantastic viewing. (33:00) Vinnie asks Gary his opinion on GLP-1s. (41:00) The mechanisms in the body when using a GLP-1 are very similar to being on a low-carb, ketogenic diet. (44:00) Significant weight loss requires keeping protein levels up to help offset muscle loss. (48:00) Exercise is very important, and can help with loose skin. The Third Rail They discuss Gary's experience during the COVID pandemic, or "the third rail." (57:30) He also shares thoughts about the recent hearings where Anthony Fauci and he "pleaded the Fifth" 111 times. The result of the pandemic is a percentage of the population realizing not to mindlessly follow medical authorities, which is good. Stay inquisitive and question what comes across the news and social media. Alcohol dampens T-cell lymphocytes' function; ketones will boost them. Where Has All My Energy Gone? — High-Functioning Anxiety & Exhaustion Relief | Guided Meditation If you've ever collapsed onto the edge of the bed at the end of a perfectly "fine" day and thought, "where has all my energy gone? I didn't even do anything today," this episode is for you. Calming Anxiety sits with the exhaustion of high-functioning anxiety, the quiet cost of holding everything together while everyone else sees someone coping just fine. We slow the body first with the extended exhale, four counts in and eight counts out, gently unwinding the shallow, high-chest breathing that builds up during a long day of performing calm, the same kind of over-breathing Martin worked with often on ambulance call-outs as a paramedic. For daily support beyond this episode, download Anchored on iOS, with Android arriving in a couple of weeks.
Why Do I Feel Dizzy? — Anxiety-Induced Lightheadedness Relief | Guided Meditation with 4-4-8 Breathing If the floor has ever seemed to tilt beneath you, or the room's gone soft and swimming for no reason at all, today's guided meditation is for you. Calming Anxiety sits with anxiety-induced dizziness, the frightening, light-headed feeling that convinces you something is medically wrong, when the real cause may simply be anxious breathing. We slow the body first with 4-4-8 breathing (in for four, hold for four, and a long, slow exhale for eight), a technique Martin has used often as a paramedic kneeling beside people who were certain they were about to collapse. For daily support beyond this episode, download Anchored on iOS, with Android arriving next month.

Anxiety Relief for Irritability & Overwhelm — I Just Need to Feel Calm Again | Alternate Nostril Breathing Guided Meditation Anxiety relief for those days when everything is getting under your skin. This ten minute guided meditation is for the moment you catch yourself thinking "I just need to feel calm again" — when the noise, the questions, the one more thing have worn your patience thin, your shoulders are tight, your jaw is clenched, and your voice is sharper than you meant it to be. Underneath irritation there is almost always something quieter. You're tired. You're overloaded. You've been holding too much together. Today we use alternate nostril breathing — nadi shodhana, the balancing breath — breathing in for four and out for six, giving your mind one gentle thing to do at a time while your nervous system finds its way back down. Slow, rhythmic breathwork for stress relief, overwhelm and an overstimulated nervous system. Hosted by clinical hypnotherapist and former paramedic Martin Hewlett, Calming Anxiety is a daily ten minute guided meditation for anxiety relief, panic attacks, stress and sleep. You don't have to become a different person today. You don't have to be endlessly patient. You simply need a little more space. ⏱️ Time Chapters * 00:00 – I just need to feel calm again * 00:20 – When the smallest things get under your skin * 00:47 – What's underneath the irritation * 01:13 – Welcome — this is your moment * 01:31 – Finding your quiet place * 01:42 – Alternate nostril breathing (nadi shodhana) explained * 02:23 – Guided breathing — in for four, out for six * 04:24 – Softening the shoulders, forehead and hands * 04:56 – Visualisation — laying the weight down * 05:44 – Today's gentle affirmations * 08:04 – You don't have to become a different person * 08:21 – Three daily caring tips * 09:14 – Returning to the room * 10:05 – Anchored, sharing and closing thoughts
I went to seminary as an evangelical. I had no idea it was going to hold so many surprises. Here are the top 7 shockers that change the entire game of Christianity. Knowing these will help us continue to unravel the hurtful, destructive teachings that, in truth, really have nothing to do with Jesus, God or the Bible. It was the beginning of the deconstruction of my faith, and the beginning of a much deeper, more beautiful, more satisfying spirituality.A special encore presentation. I don't think moms need another self care checklist. I think we need permission to admit we're exhausted. In this episode, I'm talking about the difference between neglecting ourselves and simply admitting that we're tired. I'm reminding us that we can love our families deeply and still need a break, be grateful and overwhelmed, and feel incredibly fulfilled and completely exhausted all at the same time.Maybe taking care of ourselves sometimes means doing something for ourselves. And maybe sometimes it means doing less. I'm giving myself, and you, permission to stop treating exhaustion like a personal failure.Because you don't have to earn rest. ❤️

In the second half of my conversation with Kevin "KevOnStage" and Melissa Fredericks, we talk about all the ways they take care of themselves and one another. We cover therapy and how a combination of individual and couples therapy has helped them thrive in this season of their marriage. Before the pair were beloved by millions, they were a young couple searching for good marriage advice. They took what they learned and shared it with other couples during local gatherings at a BBQ joint, hoping they would all stay together. Their approach to learning and teaching out loud has only grown as they share this information on their own podcasts, a New York Times best-selling book, and here on Naked Beauty.During our conversation, we discuss how the pair manages to be open with their audiences while also setting firm boundaries. Kev and Melissa also open up about how they push one another to be their best selves, and explain why they'll never be the other's “yes man.” While talking about grieving his brother, Kev revealed that it was Melissa who pushed him to work through his grief onstage and using comedy. Melissa was sure that he could challenge his art and build something beautiful, and given the positive reception to his shows, she was absolutely right. Title NSDR / Non-Sleep Deep Rest — Reach Deep Rest Without Forcing It | 10-Minute Physiological Sigh Meditation If you feel tired in a way that sleep never seems to touch — wired, switched-on, unable to power down even when you're exhausted — this 10-minute NSDR (Non-Sleep Deep Rest) session is for you. Hosted by clinical hypnotherapist and former paramedic Martin Hewlett, this guided meditation helps you reach deep rest without forcing it, resetting an overstimulated nervous system while you're still awake to feel it happen. Today's practice is built around the physiological sigh — a double breath in through the nose followed by one long, slow breath out. Research from Stanford found it's one of the fastest ways to bring the body down out of high alert, flipping the biological off switch and engaging the vagus nerve. From there we let the breath go completely free and sink into non-sleep deep rest: nothing to solve, nothing to reach, entirely off duty. Whether you're looking for anxiety relief in the middle of a racing day, a way to quiet a "tired but wired" mind, or a daily NSDR habit to protect your calm, give yourself permission to lie down, soften, and let the whole system settle. ⏱️ Time Chapters00:00 – "The Tiredness Sleep Doesn't Touch" (Why You Need Deep Rest, Not More Sleep)00:36 – Today's Focus: I Can Reach Deep Rest Without Forcing It00:41 – Introduction from Martin & Anchored App Overview01:16 – Resetting the Nervous System Before We Rest01:38 – The Physiological Sigh & the Stanford Research Behind It01:56 – Settling In: Lying Down, Letting the Body Fall Heavy02:15 – Guided Physiological Sighs (Three Rounds Together)03:15 – Letting the Breath Go Free: Effortless Rise & Fall04:31 – Planting Today's Truth: The Warm Amber Light04:52 – NSDR Affirmations for Nervous-System Reset (First Pass)06:32 – Staying Off Duty: Nothing to Solve, Nothing to Reach06:41 – Affirmations for Deep Subconscious Integration (Second Pass)08:00 – Reuniting Mind, Body & Soul: You Are Worthy08:27 – 3 Daily Caring Tips for Building an NSDR Habit09:12 – Gently Awakening & Returning to the Room09:47 – Closing Reflection & Notice How You Feel Now09:55 – Outro, Community Support, & Sign-off
The Modern Therapist's Survival Guide with Curt Widhalm and Katie Vernoy
Rest, By Force or By Choice: Burnout, Self-Care, and Sustainable Practice for Therapists - An Interview with Cecily Moore, PhD Dr. Cecily Moore on burnout, rest as a clinical intervention, and unlearning the Strong Black Woman Narrative. Curt and Katie talk with Dr. Cecily Moore, a licensed therapist, counselor educator, and clinical supervisor, about why the expectation of endless strength and infinite patience is an unsustainable ask for therapists and other helping professionals. As clinicians carry collective grief and moral exhaustion alongside their clients, Dr. Moore reframes what burnout is actually asking of us. At the center of the conversation is a simple, uncomfortable idea: your body is designed to protect you, so you will stop either by force or by choice. Dr. Moore makes the case for rest as a clinical intervention rather than a reward, unpacks how self-care has been co-opted into something you buy instead of something that restores you, and explains why advocacy that runs on depletion is a ticking time bomb. Real self-care, she argues, is honest about limits, boundaries, and capacity. From there the discussion turns practical. Dr. Moore shares how deeper values work (asking where a value came from and how it was modeled) opens the door to change, how her "BS Job" checklist gives clinicians a concrete mirror for what is draining them, and why systems will not shift until the people inside them do. She also connects this to her research on unlearning the Strong Black Woman Narrative and the survival-based beliefs about strength, productivity, and worth that keep so many helpers over-functioning. This is a grounded, hopeful conversation for any therapist trying to build a sustainable career without abandoning the work they care about. In this episode, we discuss: - Why endless strength and infinite patience are an unsustainable ask for helping professionals - How to tell rest as a clinical intervention apart from self-care that has been co-opted - Why your body will make you stop, by force or by choice - How to size your advocacy to your actual capacity so it does not deplete you - What deeper values work looks like, and why it drives real change - Why unlearning survival-based beliefs about strength and worth makes practice more sustainable Timestamps: - 01:20 - Who Dr. Moore is and what she puts into the world - 02:49 - What therapists get wrong about endless strength and infinite patience - 04:17 - Collective trauma and watching the world change in real time - 06:37 - Moral injury, privilege, and truth-telling across lived experience - 10:29 - How self-care got co-opted, and why advocacy runs on your well-being - 13:07 - Why rest feels so scary - 15:00 - Reframing self-care as self-maintenance - 18:58 - Over-functioning students and learning to be human - 22:49 - Insight versus implementation, and the systemic barriers - 24:15 - Why systems can't shift until the people do - 28:13 - Sustainable choices, by force or by choice - 29:16 - Values work and the "BS Job" checklist - 31:24 - The Strong Black Woman Narrative and questioning conditioning - 35:28 - Where to find Dr. Moore Guest Bio: Dr. Cecily Moore is a licensed therapist, counselor educator, researcher, and clinical supervisor with a PhD in Counselor Education and Supervision. She is the founder of Dr. Cecily Moore & Associates and the creator of the Reappropriate, Redefine, Recover framework, which helps Black women unlearn the Strong Black Woman Narrative and the survival-based beliefs around strength, productivity, and worth that fuel burnout. Her work blends trauma-informed care, nervous system regulation, and culturally responsive practice, and reframes rest as a clinical intervention, not a reward. Learn more at drcecilymoore.com. This week Nicola and Di chat with the bubbly, gorgeous Amanda Ramsay, an award-winning makeup artist who's worked with some of the biggest names in the Australian entertainment industry. Amanda has worked across TV, weddings and events, but for her, beauty has always gone far beyond the makeup itself. It's about confidence, self-care, and feeling good from the inside out. We chat to Amanda about the light bulb moment that changed the course of her career when she walked into a beauty retailer as a new mum in her early 40s and realised that no one was serving women 40 plus. That moment sparked what would become a mission to help thousands of women feel confident and seen, through in-person classes, online courses, and uncomplicated, real-world techniques that actually work at this stage of life. We dive deep into all things skincare and makeup, from why hydration is the real key to a glowing complexion, to Amanda's "less is more" philosophy when it comes to texture and coverage. She shares her favourite tricks for looking instantly more awake, why blush and a strong brow can transform your whole face, and her take on lip liners, stains and fillers for a fuller-looking pout without looking overdone. We also talk about the emotional side of beauty, the importance of finding your own features to love rather than fixate on, and why reinvention can be one of the most empowering things a woman can do. Amanda's advice throughout is simple, practical and full of heart, and we walked away with tips we can't wait to try. We had so much fun chatting with Amanda. She's warm, generous and clearly loves helping women feel their best. We hope you enjoy this episode as much as we did! You finally made time for the walk. But did you actually take the walk—or did you spend thirty minutes answering calls, replaying yesterday, planning tomorrow, and solving everybody else's problems? This month we've been talking about creating space for ourselves and our health. In this episode, Dr. Stacy takes that idea one step deeper: making the time is only half of it.Because you can be physically present and mentally somewhere else entirely. We're talking about the endless “browser tabs” running in our brains, decision fatigue, why healthy habits can still feel exhausting even when they're technically happening, and what changes when you allow your brain to actually be present during the time you've protected.Dr. Stacy also shares where she's working on this herself—especially her tendency to build schedules with absolutely no margin for “life to life”—and some of the simple ways she creates moments of presence through coffee outside, watering plants, walking without headphones, and putting the phone away. This isn't another thing to add to your to-do list. It's an invitation to actually experience some of the time you've worked so hard to create. And if this month's conversations about space have resonated with you, we're doing the deeper work around these ideas inside the SugarFreeMD membership. www.sugarfreemd.com/LSMFree 2-Pound Plan Call!Want to jump start your weight loss? (7:30) He shares a story about his hard-working grandfather. The lesson: why Vinnie doesn't believe in "I can't." It's also a lesson in following through on promises to others and yourself. Don't tell yourself "I can't." The Arizona Healthy Schools Act is attempting to ban ultra-processed foods during certain hours of the day while on campus. (25:00) It's a little less about certain foods, and more focused on certain ingredients. (28:00) President Clinton had made the positive move of removing sodas from schools. (41:30) Unfortunately, sodas were replaced with other sugar-filled drinks, like juices. Even the American Beverage Association thought the law was ineffective. (45:00) Vinnie clarifies how he helps people break their habit of drinking soda, which is necessary if you are metabolically broken. (47:15) Avocados help lower LDL cholesterol, according to the Avocado Nutrition Center. (51:00) According to some well-respected cardiologists, high LDL is only a concern in a very specific context. Otherwise, keep enjoying your avocados! Also, stay away from tobacco products, including chewing tobacco. Can't Sleep Because It's Too Hot — Coherent Breathing for Hot Night Insomnia & Anxiety | Guided Sleep Meditation Anchored - The bespoke app from Calming Anxiety - https://apps.apple.com/us/app/anchored-panic-anxiety/id6785035669Can't sleep because it's too hot? You have turned the pillow over three times, the cool side lasted about forty seconds, and now your mind has decided the restlessness means something is wrong. It doesn't. This ten-minute guided sleep meditation is built for warm, balmy August nights when the body can't settle and anxiety fills the gap. Tonight's breath is coherent breathing — also known as resonant breathing or HRV breathing. Five seconds in, five seconds out, no holding and nothing forced. Martin calls it the still breath, because on a night like this everything else is moving and this is the one thing that isn't. Cool air arrives at the tip of the nose and leaves a little warmer, which means every out breath is quietly letting heat go. From there we settle the body the way it actually cools itself — feet out from under the covers, palms up, jaw unclenched — and move into a soft visualisation of silver-blue moonlight, the light of a night that has already begun to cool. Hosted by clinical hypnotherapist and former paramedic Martin Hewlett. If you drift off before the end, good. That is success, not failure. ⏱️ Time Chapters * 00:00 – The cool side of the pillow: why hot nights feel like anxiety* 00:38 – Sponsored by Anchored* 01:10 – Welcome from Martin* 01:30 – Settling the body: feet out, palms up, jaw unclenched* 02:01 – Tonight's breath: coherent breathing, five in and five out* 05:08 – Visualisation: cool silver-blue moonlight* 05:56 – Today's gentle affirmations* 08:16 – Your three daily caring tips* 09:19 – Coming back gently* 10:26 – Share the show and sign-off
You can have a genuinely excellent self-care practice, the meditation, the training, the tracked sleep, the nutrition, and still be using every bit of it to avoid the one question that actually needed asking. In this episode, I turn the mic on myself. After 14 years and thousands of conversations about what it takes to live well, I trace the year my own "robust" wellness practice, meditation, training, nutrition, connection, everything, ended in a stress-induced medical diagnosis at the exact moment I'd have called myself the most dialed-in version of my life. Turns out, you cannot self-care your way out of a fundamental misalignment in a core area of your life. So, today, we're exploring:The real distinction between self-care that restores you and self-care that just makes a misaligned life more bearable, or worse, hides what actually needs your true attention.Three 90-second tests, duration, imagination, intensity, that tell you honestly which one you're runningThe five places structural misalignment hides in midlife, including the "cumulative weight" version almost nobody namesWhy subtraction, not another practice, is usually the actual fixA six-move menu for making one concrete structural change in the next 30 daysIf your practice has been working harder for smaller returns lately, this conversation will tell you whether that's a regulation problem or a fit problem, and what to do about either one.Episode TranscriptIf you LOVED this episode, you can find the 1-page worksheet HERE.Mentioned in this episode: How to Finally Have the Talk You've Been Avoiding.Next week, next week we're sitting down with Dr. Rebecca Robbins to talk about why the sleep advice most of us are following was built for a body and a schedule most of us don't actually have anymore. (6:00) It was also the first time in a long time that Vinnie went water skiing. Once he recovered from an injury, he was inspired to return to the activities he hadn't done for years. (16:00) He shares a skiing story that is a reminder to keep getting up after failing. (20:00) Vinnie gives an update on getting creatine into Pure Vitamin Club's product line. (34:00) Benefits of CCTA Scans Vinnie is interested in learning more about reversal of plaque in the arteries. (37:00) For many years, medicine has stated that once plaque build-up happened, it could not be reversed. Chris summarizes an article from Cardiovascular Business Journal. (40:00) CCTA scans appear to show progression of disease in stages now, which was unavailable before. However, using the test should be limited since it uses contrast radiation. A CAC score tells you if you have plaque or not. The CCTA (Cardiac Computed Tomography Angiography) examines how much plaque, where it's located, and its progression. (50:00) Doctors and Big Pharma have been pushing Repatha. (52:00) It came out in 2016 and did basically nothing. And then, it's jumped 37% year over year. The company made $953 million in sales in the second quarter this year of Repatha alone. Many people are on multiple drugs. Many times some of the drugs are addressing symptoms caused by other drugs they are taking. (56:00) Never be passive about your health when consulting with your medical professional. Always advocate for yourself.
