Welcome to another episode of Death Don't Do Fiction, the AIPT Movies podcast! The podcast about the enduring legacy of our favorite movies! It's May, which means it's time for the AIPT Movies podcast's “Mayhem” series! Where we cover movies that kick ass in the literal sense! In this week's episode, Alex, Tim, and guest Tony Sedani discuss Brandon Lee's 1992 fusion of American and Hong Kong-style action movies, Rapid Fire!Bowling-related gun violence! A mild electrocution! Cops in suits! Goons with sunglasses! Characters cranked up to 11! A restaurant with an emergency mounted machine gun! An undercover operation in a bowling alley! Seedy Chicago locations! A shirtless running shot that may have inspired Michael Bay's Bad Boys! A very 90s musical score from the prolific Christopher Young, plus hair metal songs from the band Hardline! Impressive action set pieces that pay homage to Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan while affecting how action would be handled in movies to this very day! A cast of character actors that includes Al Leong, Tzi Ma, François Chau, a brief Richard Schiff cameo, and Powers Boothe in a rare good guy role! Brandon Lee doing a brief Clark Kent impression and delivering a charismatic performance that shows he could've been one of cinema's greatest action stars if given the chance! In addition, Alex and Tony share some spoiler-free thoughts on Sinners, Thunderbolts, The Accountant 2, and the newest action epic from the director of The Raid, the gritty Tom Hardy shoot-em-up, Havoc! You can find Death Don't Do Fiction on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts. Welcome to another episode of Death Don't Do Fiction, the AIPT Movies podcast! The podcast about the enduring legacy of our favorite movies! This February we're celebrating “Dreddruary,” where we cover movies based on the British comic book character, Judge Dredd! In this week's episode, Alex, Tim, and Matt discuss Sylvester Stallone's misguided 1995 schlockfest, Judge Dredd!Recycled food! Bedazzled codpieces! Distracting lifts! A cool, creepy cyborg! A shockingly sneaky, giant robot! Lethal holograms! Futuristic court drama! Stylish garbs of justice designed by Gianni Versace! A strong score by Predator's Alan Silvestri and cinematography by Aliens' Adrian Biddle! An original song from The Cure! A surprisingly faithful comic adaptation in every way except for the lead character! A visual treat with incredible production design, animatronics, and visual effects, including one of the greatest fictional mega cities in cinema! A solid cast that includes James Remar (briefly), Armand Assante, Max von Sydow, Diane Lane, Rob Schneider unfortunately, and Sylvester Stallone's ego derailing the movie! Dark themes of police corruption and eugenics in this silly movie that maybe works better as a disappointing sequel to Demolition Man, from a frustrated director who loved both the source material and apparently Blade Runner! In addition, Alex shares his spoiler-free thoughts on Captain America: Brave New World, Oz Perkins' new horror comedy, The Monkey, and the final nail in the Sonyverse coffin, Kraven the Hunter! You can find Death Don't Do Fiction on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts. Interview: Matthew Rosenberg We're Taking Everyone Down with Us #1 out March 26 (FOC March 3) Artist Stefano LandiniColorist Roman TitovLetters Hassan Otsmane-ElhaouStory and ThemesWe're Taking Everyone Down With Us blends super-spies, mad scientists, and robots with themes of family and revenge. What drew you to this mix of genres and how did it shape the story's tone?Annalise's journey is centered around two big choices—revenge or normalcy. What inspired this core conflict, and how do you balance her emotional arc with the high-stakes action?Favorite James Bond? You've worked on grounded crime stories like 4 Kids Walk Into A Bank and more fantastical ones like What's the Furthest Place From Here?. How does We're Taking Everyone Down With Us build on or depart from those previous works?Family seems to be a recurring theme in much of your work. What's unique about the father-daughter relationship in this story?Characters and DevelopmentThe story leans into some wild concepts—super-spies, futuristic tech, and global domination. Were there any particular influences from spy fiction, sci-fi, or pop culture that helped shape these elements?Process and LegacyYou've mentioned this story turned out funnier and more heartfelt than you originally planned. Were there any moments during the writing process where you surprised yourself with how the story evolved? With your earlier work, like 4 Kids Walk Into A Bank, now being adapted into a film, how do you think your storytelling has changed or evolved over the years, and how does We're Taking Everyone Down With Us reflect that growth?Fun/Silly QuestionIf Annalise's robot bodyguards were to pick a theme song for their revenge mission, what song would they choose and why?DC vs. Vampires QuestionsSwitching gears to DC vs. Vampires World War V, we already spoke wayyyyy back in August about the series before it launched, but with the special DC vs. Vampires: World War V – Darkness and Light #1 and essentially half the maxiseries out, (#7 out Mar 12th, 2025), how are you digging the fan reaction? With "DC vs. Vampires: World War V – Darkness and Light #1" releasing this week, Are there themes or messages you're particularly excited to explore in this installment?Alfred is becoming more or less the “good” guy main character, Can you discuss the psychological and moral complexities you aimed to portray in Alfred as he navigates his new identity as a GL?If DC vs. Vampires was made in 2026 riffing off the Absolute Universe, how would it be different?Anything you could tease for the second half of this series?

Sometimes we see things, sometimes genitals are covered up, what gives?!The series takes place across both mundane and fantastical locations—Estonia's cold landscapes and Las Vegas's vibrant excess are especially highlighted in Nights #13. Quick and effective world-building! Really cool helmets! A very dangerous atrium! A simple, contained story inspired by the action classic, The Raid! A surprisingly stripped-down comic book movie, especially when compared with modern examples! Absolutely brutal slow motion violence! Absurdly large buildings! A solid cast that includes Olivia Thirlby, Wood Harris, Harry Potter's Domhnall Gleeson with blue cyber eyes, an uncomfortably cruel Lena Headey, and the lower half of Karl Urban's face doing some of the greatest frown-acting you've ever seen! A movie based on a British comic book about America, starring European people doing American accents, which may also secretly be the first movie directed by Civil War's Alex Garland! In addition, Alex shares his spoiler-free thoughts on The Wolf of Snow Hollow, the new Valentine's Day-themed slasher, Heart Eyes, and the genre-bending thriller Companion! You can find Death Don't Do Fiction on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts. You're very busy at the moment, with Nullhunter, Sacred Damned, and Frankenstein all coming out at the same time, how do you find the time?Nullhunter is a bit different with you teaming up with Gustaffo Vargas, what's the elevator pitch for this one? There are some incredible visuals in Nullhunter, from large-scale action to future tech. As an artist, how detailed are your scripts when you're drawing the book vs working with a collaborator like Gustaffo? We know Nullhunter is inspired by the Labors of Hercules, but beyond Greek myth as a guide, do you have a world bible for this version of the future? In some ways Nullhunter reminds me of Dune with a big sweeping government in space, what were some of its inspirations? In Nullhunter, you have a way of stripping exposition to its bare essentials. What's that process like? The Silver Coin and The Sacred Damned have some gnarly monsters in them. Do you ever find yourself pulling out an old sketchbook and dusting off a design when the right script comes along? We had Pornsak Pichetshote on the show a little while back to tell us about the Horizon Experiment, and we love the concept. How'd you come aboard?Switching gears to Frankenstein: What is it about Universal's Frankenstein that has made this particular incarnation so enduring? With Frankenstein, you take a unique approach from a child's perspective, was this always in your pitch, or did it come up organically? Fanboy question incoming: Can we expect more Silver Coin in our future?Rapid Fire Question Round:Best sandwich? What's one thing you own that you really should throw out?Apples or oranges? What was your first comic?Have you ever asked someone for their autograph? When do you think your art style came into its own? What do you think happens when we die?Favorite action movie?Favorite smell?Least favorite smell?Favorite superhero? Most used app on your phone? If you could have dinner with any three characters you've created before, who would they be and why?You get one song to listen to for the rest of your life: what is it?A genre you want to make more comics in?Describe the rest of your life in 5 words?

YOUTH GROUP art by  Bowen McCurdy - Out 07/16/2024Jordan Morris, thank you for being our guest on the AIPT Comics podcast for the second time!Thank you for continuing the tradition of appearing on our show the day after a Doughboys appearance! Tell our listeners, why's Youth Group so awesome?Specter Inspectors is one of my favorite comics from the last few years. How'd you link up with Bowen McCurdy?Did you ever do youth ministry? This felt so specific in so many ways. One of the things I love is that this book embraces the idea that there's no wrong way to embrace spirituality. Was that an important message for you? And how long did it take to come to that, if I can get a little personal? There's specific Christian and Wiccann weaponry introduced. How'd you come about these and was there anything left on the cutting room floor? Do you have spreadsheets for the rules?A lot of these characters feel deeply realized. Were any based on people you or Bowen McCurdy knew growing up?For a deeply Christian person nervous about picking up Youth Group, how might you pitch this book to them? What contemporary pop songs would be converted into Christian anthems if this book were set today?I feel like some of the characters are learning to ask questions for the first time, and it's difficult. Was this always a part of the story from the beginning, or something you found as you built out these characters? What comics are you reading currently?

How do you navigate not making her too one-dimensional?When writing a character like Waller, is there a certain headspace you need to be in?Given Green Arrow seemingly edging towards agreeing with Waller, might we assume not every hero is on her hit list?Could one assume this is all leading toward ALL heroes going into hiding, or at least never being trusted by the public again? With so many characters involved in this event, and so many locations across the globe, do you or someone else have a giant Risk game board out trying to keep track of things? After headlining the Lazarus Planet event, how would you say headlining Absolute Power is different?Wants an airwave action figureIf Absolute Power was a song what would it be and why? You've worked with a ton of talented artists, maybe nearly every one that can come to mind, do you have a mount rushmore of artists you'd love to work with again? If there was such a thing as the Mark Waid guarantee, what would you stamp on the cover guaranteed for anyone on the fence about Absolute Power?
