What is the psychology behind how the human brain constructs reality? When David Eagleman fell twelve feet off a roof as a child, the entire fall lasted just 0.6 seconds, yet his brain made it feel like an eternity. That moment sparked a lifelong curiosity about the brain and how it constructs perception, ultimately leading him to Stanford and a career in neuroscience. In this episode, David reveals the science of time perception, brain plasticity, and sensory substitution, and why the human brain is far more powerful and expandable than you ever imagined. In this episode, Hala and David will discuss: (00:00) Introduction (01:26) A Childhood Fall That Revealed Time Perception (06:46) How the Brain Constructs Reality (10:33) Hidden Senses the Human Brain Is Missing (16:46) What Is Brain Plasticity and Livewiring? He is the writer and presenter of the international PBS series The Brain with David Eagleman and The Creative Brain on Netflix. His bestselling book Livewired reveals how the brain adapts in real time, reshaping our understanding of perception, consciousness, and human psychology. If you've built a life that looks great from the outside but still feels like something's missing on the inside, the problem might not be your relationship — it might be how much of yourself you're actually bringing to it. Whether it's a body image spiral that shuts you down in the bedroom, a long-term dynamic that's gone quietly cold, or a fear of vulnerability that's been running the show since day one, the shift almost always starts with one honest conversation. In this episode, volleyball legend, entrepreneur, and mother of three Gabby Reece gets real about what it actually takes to keep desire, respect, and intimacy alive after decades together — and why most of us are working harder than we need to. In this episode, you'll learn: • Why the masculine and feminine dynamic has been completely misunderstood — and how redefining it can transform your relationship and your sex life • What Gabby and Laird's 48-hour rule actually looks like in practice, and whether a structure like that could work for you • How to stop torturing yourself in the bedroom and finally get out of your head long enough to actually feel something • The real reason long-term relationships lose their spark — and the daily habits that keep attraction from quietly dying • How to talk to your kids about sex, body image, and peer pressure in a way that actually lands • Why vulnerability isn't a personality trait you either have or don't — it's a skill, and it's one you can learn This episode is sponsored by... If your audience is already comfortable and driven by what they enjoy, how do you create a message that actually moves them to act? When you focus too much on problems, struggles, and what could go wrong, you often miss the mark. Many people already have stable jobs, earn sufficient income, and are managing full lives. For them, urgency doesn't come from fear but from something else.Instead of highlighting what's wrong, you need to show them what's possible. A better version of their life, they haven't yet fully considered. More time, more freedom, and more control. When your message connects to what they truly value, it becomes relevant. And that's what drives action. In this episode of Diamond Life Mentor Uncut, Balazs W Kardos shares a powerful sales strategy for reaching an audience that most entrepreneurs overlook. You will hear key insights on:Positioning your message around both pain and pleasureSegmenting your audience, especially in the health and wellness spaceUnderstanding what your audience actually valuesCreating urgency for people who are not strugglingLeveraging health and wellness opportunities effectivelyBalazs emphasizes that you're not just selling to a broad market. You're speaking to people in a specific season of life. If you miss that timing, your message won't land.Someone in their early 30s preparing for a family will see time very differently from someone with grown children. Someone financially stable will respond differently from someone trying to get by. When you understand these differences, your message becomes clearer, more relevant, and far more effective. The clearer you are about who you're speaking to, the easier it is to create content that connects and converts.“This is how you get through to people that are not broke, desperate, lack scarcity, because they're so caught up and it's good enough that they can't imagine how much better it could be.” - Balazs W KardosIf you want to learn how to speak to the right person, at the right time, with a message that actually drives action, listen to Episode 162 of DLM Uncut: The Sales Strategy Most Entrepreneurs Ignore, available now on all platforms.
On today's episode, we welcome Thomas Bowman, Co-Founder & CEO of Eclipse Foods — the plant-based dairy company built on one bold idea: replicate real dairy, don't compromise on it. A classically trained chef who worked in 16 Michelin-starred kitchens before moving into food innovation, Thomas brings culinary precision and food science together to create non-dairy products that truly match the taste, texture, and functionality of conventional dairy. In this conversation, Thomas shares his journey from fine dining to leading R&D at JUST, where he helped bring products like JUST Mayo to market, and how those lessons shaped Eclipse from day one. We talk about the “replication, not alternative” philosophy, the science behind building dairy without the cow, scaling disruptive food products, and what it really takes to change consumer behavior in a legacy category. A must-listen for founders, food innovators, and anyone interested in the future of sustainable dairy. This week's "At her Career Crossroads" insight comes from myself, Dr. Robin. "Sometimes what is happening is that your inner life has evolved. You have evolved, but your outer path has not fully caught up yet. And that can create a kind of tension that is hard to explain to people who only know how to measure success from the outside." Here are 3 reasons why you should listen to this episode: If you've ever found yourself questioning your career even though everything still looks successful on the outside, this episode will help you understand why that moment happens. You'll hear why many high-achieving women reach a point where success alone is no longer enough to answer deeper questions about direction and meaning. You'll learn the difference between a temporary moment of uncertainty and what I call a defining career crossroads. I'm a leadership expert, executive coach, and researcher who helps high-achieving women close the gap between external success and internal alignment so they can lead and live with greater purpose. The number of couples struggling to become pregnant due to unexplained infertility is growing at an alarming rate across the globe. Alongside this concerning rise is the growing awareness of how endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) – particularly those found in plastics and personal care products – are negatively affecting our hormonal health and overall well-being. If we removed or reduced EDCs from the environments of couples struggling to conceive – dramatically reducing their exposure – is it possible their fertility would be improved? In this episode, Nate is joined by Dr. Shanna Swan, an award-winning scientist, and Sian Sutherland, a plastics expert, to discuss Shanna's new Netflix documentary, titled The Plastic Detox, where she enacts a real-world 'plastic intervention' in the lives of six couples struggling with unexplained infertility – with the hope that they are able to get pregnant by the end of the study. Additionally, Sian shares the strategies her organization has been using to increase regulation of EDC-containing products and increase the availability of plastic-free options. Shanna and Sian also discuss how they're bringing their work together for the Plastic Free Babies campaign, which emphasizes why avoiding toxic chemical exposure during the first one-thousand days of a baby's life is so important to preventing generational effects on overall health and fertility. How might reducing our exposure to EDCs such as phthalates, bisphenols, and parabens improve markers of hormonal health and create ripple effects on our overall quality of life? What is the reasonable responsibility of our governments to test and regulate the safety of products on the market – and are our current institutions fulfilling those expectations? Finally, could addressing the toxins and pollution related to declining fertility lead us down a path of broader systemic change for the entire web of life? About Dr. Shanna Swan: Dr. Shanna H. Swan, PhD, is an award-winning scientist based at Mt. Sinai (New York, NY). Shanna has published more than 200 scientific papers and has been featured in extensive media coverage around the world. She currently serves as the Director of the Action Science Initiative, a program that conducts rapid interventions and larger, longer-term studies that look at the impacts of environmental pollutants on fertility and related markers of reproductive health. Additionally, Shanna co-authored the 2021 book, Countdown: How Our Modern World Is Threatening Sperm Counts, Altering Male and Female Reproductive Development, and Imperiling the Future of the Human Race. Most recently, Shanna was featured in the documentary, The Plastic Detox, where she helped six couples dealing with unexplained fertility reduce their exposure to endocrine disrupting chemicals in their environment in hopes of getting pregnant. The movie was released on Netflix on March 16th, 2026. Shanna's previous appearances include ABC News, NBC Nightly News, 60 Minutes, CBS News, PBS, BBC, PRI Radio, NPR, Andrew Huberman Lab, and The Joe Rogan Experience. About Sian Sutherland: Sian Sutherland is Co-founder of A Plastic Planet, one of the most recognized and respected organizations tackling the plastic crisis. More recently, she also co-founded PlasticFree, the first materials and systems solutions platform, empowering the 160m global creatives to design waste out at the source. Sian was awarded the Female Marketer of the Year, Entrepreneur of the Year, and British Inventor of the Year. In 2023 at the UN Plastics Treaty negotiations (INC2), in partnership with Plastic Soup Foundation, A Plastic Planet launched the Plastic Health Council, bringing expert scientists to the negotiating process with the irrefutable proof of plastic chemicals' impacts on human health. Most recently, in early 2024, Sian co-founded the Foundation for Visionary Science and Art with Alex Adams, working with the scientists to help fund their extraordinary research work on psychedelic therapies. Passionately pro-business and solutions focused, Sian believes the plastic crisis gives mankind a rare gateway to change both materials and systems to create a different future for next generations. One of the biggest mistakes entrepreneurs make is copying what other successful people are doing. Someone launches a course… so we launch a course.Someone starts a mastermind… so we start a mastermind.Someone builds a funnel… so we build a funnel. But we rarely stop to ask a much more important question: What are those people optimizing for? Another way to ask it is: Where does that path actually lead? Today I want to share with you a powerful principle that explains why some people end up exactly where they want in life… and others spend years walking the wrong path. On today's episode, I'm joined by Rea Ann Silva, the celebrity makeup artist and founder of Beautyblender, to talk about how a problem she faced on set turned into one of the most iconic tools in beauty. Rea Ann shares her journey from growing up in the Los Angeles area in a hardworking family to building a career as a professional makeup artist, and how the shift to high-definition television forced artists to completely rethink complexion and application techniques. We dive into the origin story of the Beautyblender, how she created the first sponge to achieve seamless, airbrushed skin without heavy makeup, and how the product spread organically through the pro makeup community long before social media. She also opens up about navigating early copycats, staying relevant in a competitive industry, and what it takes to build a product with true longevity. If you're interested in entrepreneurship, innovation, and the behind-the-scenes story of a beauty product that changed the industry, this episode is packed with insights. Enjoy! Nir Eyal is a globally recognized authority on behavior design, habits, and human potential. A former lecturer at Stanford Graduate School of Business, Nir is the bestselling author of Hooked and Indistractable, books that have sold more than a million copies worldwide and have shaped how entrepreneurs and product creators think about behavior change. He's also a serial entrepreneur who has founded and sold multiple companies. In this episode, Nir returns to the show to discuss the ideas behind his new book Beyond Belief, exploring why belief—not knowledge or motivation—is often the missing link between knowing what to do and actually doing it. On this episode we talk about: Why knowing what to do isn't enough—and why people still fail to take action The “motivation triangle” and how belief holds behavior and benefits together Why positive thinking and manifestation can actually backfire The role discomfort plays in motivation and long-term success How entrepreneurs develop “entrepreneurial alertness” and see opportunities others miss Top 3 Takeaways Motivation isn't a straight line—it's a triangle that includes behavior, benefits, and belief. Without belief in the outcome or your ability to achieve it, motivation collapses. Visualizing outcomes alone can decrease your chances of success. Instead, visualize the obstacles you'll face and mentally rehearse overcoming them. Beliefs shape perception. Entrepreneurs often see opportunities others miss because they believe opportunities exist—and their brain actively searches for them. Notable Quotes "Motivation is not about the pursuit of pleasure—it's about the desire to escape discomfort." "Thinking positive can actually be negative if it tricks your brain into believing the work is already done." "Your beliefs literally change what you see. Entrepreneurs don't just think differently—they actually perceive opportunities others overlook." What does it look like to build a meaningful and profitable business — and refuse to sell despite tempting offers? Think about the business world today. Industries consolidate. Companies buy each other out. Others manage to scale growth, but often at the expense of their soul. Staying independent can feel like the riskiest move of all. But what if that risk is the very thing that builds your reputation? This episode is a masterclass in playing the long game. Dan Smalls pulls back the curtain on nearly four decades in the live music industry — from booking shows at 18 years old to producing massive festivals — and shares what it takes to grow without losing control. Dan is the founder of DSP Shows, an independent concert promotion company presenting more than 800 events a year across New York and Massachusetts. His career includes producing the first seven Phish summer festivals, revitalizing Ithaca's historic State Theatre, and acquiring the beloved Green River Music Festival. Known for his artist-first philosophy and relentless commitment to experience, Dan has built one of the most respected regional operations in the country — without ever selling out to corporate ownership. In this episode, Dan breaks down how to scale with integrity, protect your independence, and build a business rooted in relationships. Risk Is the Business Dan describes his job simply: "I gamble for your enjoyment." Every show is a bet. The promoter guarantees money to the artist, pays for the venue, handles marketing, production, staffing — and assumes all financial risk. At 9:30 p.m., that ticket is worth something. At 9:31, it's worth nothing. It's a high-stakes model. But Dan doesn't view risk as something to avoid — it's just another aspect of operations to manage across the big picture. One show may lose $50,000. Another might outperform expectations. The key is zooming out and playing the long game across a whole year. Entrepreneurs can take a powerful lesson here: you can't evaluate success one moment at a time. You have to build systems and relationships that endure, along with a resilience that will carry you through volatility. Relationships Over Revenue In an industry known for ego and excess, Dan built his company on a different philosophy: treat artists better than anyone else. That means remembering what they love. Adding thoughtful touches backstage. Protecting their space. Making a grueling tour feel human. Over time, that care compounds. Artists request to work with him. Agents trust him. Some have even voluntarily reduced their own payouts after underperforming shows to protect the relationship. That's reputation. That's currency. While multinational corporations answer to shareholders, Dan answers to his team, his family, and his community. He's turned down buyouts. He's resisted the roll-up culture of the industry. And he's grown organically — from 62 shows a year with a laptop to a nine-person team producing hundreds of events annually. It's proof that independence is possible with the right thinking and planning. Enjoy this episode with Dan Smalls… Soundbytes 13:30–13:51 "We take, basically, all the risk. People ask what I do. I say, 'I gamble for your enjoyment.' We're going to guarantee the band a certain amount of money or a certain percentage of the gate. We'll have to rent the venue. We do all the marketing. We pay all the bills. And if there's anything left at the end after we split with the act, that's where we make our money. There's no guarantees on our side." 23:21–23:44 "He kept pushing it, and I finally closed the door in his face and I wrote the check. And I've learned to take those hits like a champ. The wins and the losses have to be the same. But ironically, the next day, they sent me a note that they ripped the check up and didn't want to see me lose that much, so they took less. And I think that's where you get the ultimate respect in this industry." Quotes "I sell a product that today is worth $80, and at 9:30 tonight, it's worth zero." "I've never really let money be the motivator. It was always: how can I treat this band better?" "You don't understand what it's like until you're putting your own skin in the game." "We've never sat down and planned growth. We've always let it be organic." Stop Doing Everything Yourself: How AI and the 10-80-10 Rule Free Business Owners to Scale "What if the secret to scaling your business isn't working harder, but systematizing smarter and leading with more humanity? Today's guest has spent over 30 years doing exactly that, launching, building, buying, and selling businesses, raising more than $35 million in venture capital, leading organizations that generated billions in sales, and learning just as much from his failures as his wins. He's a finalist for the Ernst & Young Technology Entrepreneur of the Year Award, an Inc. 5000 Winner, a former Entrepreneur in Residence at Indiana University's Kelley School of Business, a Fast Company Executive Board Member, and the bestselling author of four books, including BOS-UP and BOS-UP Moments. Today, he serves as Founder and CEO of Straticos and BOS-UP, where he coaches business leaders, invests in companies, and sits on boards — helping teams build stronger systems, culture, and performance." Learning Insights The 10-80-10 Rule: Business owners should focus the initial 10% on innovation and business development, let AI and systems handle the middle 80% of routine operations, and spend the final 10% on human connection, coaching, and culture. Work-Life Harmony Over Balance: Balance is a static myth. Harmony is about integration, rhythm, and flow like music, where sometimes the treble is up, and the bass is down, or like Garrett's Chicago mix popcorn combining cheddar and caramel. The CLEAR Framework for Leadership: Collaborative, Logical, Empathetic, Authentic, and Resilient, a standard for leadership communication and decision-making during high-stress moments. Systematize the Predictable to Humanize the Exceptional: Quote from Isadore Sharp (Four Seasons founder), use systems to handle routine tasks so leaders can focus on high-value creative and relational work. AI as Co-Pilot, Not Replacement: "You, it, never it alone." AI is an aggregator and accelerator, but human validation must always be applied before anything goes out. Profit First Over Unicorn Status: Small businesses should seek free cash flow and stability rather than chasing unicorn status. Focus on leading indicators, not just lagging ones like bank balances. Coach You Up or Coach You Out: Leaders should invest in developing their people, but if there's persistent pushback or misalignment, move them out to maintain organizational health. Grace and Grit: The next generation should balance resilience and hard work (grit) with compassion and self-forgiveness (grace), using the hindsight of others as their foresight. The ABC Mantra: Be the Architect (designer), Builder (executor), and Custodian (protector) of your leadership, business, and life. Why This Conversation Matters This conversation bridges the gap between rigid engineering systems and human-centric leadership. Scott Abbott challenges the traditional "work-life balance" myth and offers a modern framework for integrating AI and systems into business without losing the human touch. What makes this unique is his perspective from both sides; he lived through the dot-com crash after raising $15 million, learned profit-first discipline at a $32 billion corporation, and now teaches entrepreneurs how to scale smarter. The deeper message is that true success comes from using systems to protect and amplify humanity, not replace it. By systematizing the predictable, leaders are freed to focus on what only they can do: innovate, connect, and build culture. This isn't just about building better businesses; it's about building better lives through harmony, intentionality, and the courage to leverage both grace and grit. Money Learning Scott's financial mindset evolved dramatically from his early entrepreneurial rebellion to systemic discipline. Growing up with an engineer father who emphasized rigor, spreadsheets, and mechanics, Scott initially rebelled, leading to "dumb" spending decisions during the dot-com era when he raised $15 million for an internet services company. The psychological toll of losing up to $500,000 a month forced him to "check his ego" and learn financial stewardship. His time at Avnet, a $32 billion company with thin 8% margins, taught him to be "banshees on profit" and prioritize free cash flow over unicorn dreams. He advocates the Profit First philosophy, focusing on leading indicators rather than lagging ones like bank balances. His key money lesson: discipline equals freedom. By implementing rigorous financial systems, entrepreneurs can move from "living in the mess" to achieving harmony where the business serves their life, not the other way around. Success isn't permanent and failure isn't fatal, but cash flow is king. Key Takeaway The most powerful insight from this conversation is that scaling your business isn't about doing more, it's about doing less of what doesn't matter so you can focus on what only you can do. Scott Abbott's 10-80-10 rule reveals that most business owners are trapped in the middle 80% of routine operations when they should be leveraging AI and systems to handle that work. By systematizing the predictable, you humanize the exceptional, freeing yourself to lead with empathy, authenticity, and resilience. Work-life balance is a myth that sets you up for failure; harmony is the reality that allows integration and flow. Whether you're just starting out or scaling to eight figures, the frameworks Scott shares, CLEAR leadership, profit-first mentality, and the ABC mantra of being an architect, builder, and custodian, provide a roadmap for building a business that doesn't consume your life but enhances it. Remember: leverage the hindsight of others as your foresight, embrace both grace and grit, and never let AI work alone, you, it, never it alone. Bio Scott Abbott is an architect, builder, and custodian of strong, resilient companies and leaders. Most entrepreneurs approach investing completely differently than seasoned investors. Entrepreneurs often think: "How do I make this work?" Investors think: "How do I avoid losing money?" In this episode of Franchise Secrets, Erik Van Horn sits down with lifestyle investor Justin Donald to break down the fundamental mindset differences between entrepreneurs and investors — and why understanding this difference can completely change how you invest. They also discuss: • The massive $75–$105 trillion wealth transfer happening right now • Why most investment deals you see are actually bad • How macro trends shape long-term investment opportunities • The difference between active income vs true passive income • Why the person behind the deal matters more than the deal itself • The biggest mistakes new investors make when starting out If you're an entrepreneur, franchise owner, or business operator who wants to become a smarter investor, this conversation will change how you evaluate opportunities. Listen and start building a life by design instead of a life by default. They didn't grow up in the drinks industry. They didn't have investors lined up. They had £12,000, two corporate jobs, and a spicy margarita made on a balcony during lockdown. In this episode of Screw It Just DO It, I sit down with Alice Parmiter and Wynter Karo, co-founders of Pimentae, to unpack how they turned a tequila knowledge gap into one of the UK's fastest-growing tequila cocktail brands. From discovering real tequila culture in Mexico to spotting a gap in UK supermarkets, they bootstrapped their first 1,400 bottles, hand-delivered influencer hampers, and then put £20,000 down to run a festival bar with no safety net. That decision funded their business.Since then, they've raised £2 million, scaled into grocery, travel and festival spaces, navigated a product recall, and built a brand rooted in community and authenticity. This is not a “glam startup” story. It's about blind optimism, operational mistakes, difficult fundraising conversations, and staying aligned as co-founders.Key Takeaways• Why blind optimism is often required at the start• How bootstrapping builds stronger commercial discipline• The risks of taking the wrong investor too early• Why festivals became their most powerful customer acquisition tool• How authenticity protects your brand as you scale

There's a big difference between being busy and building something that lasts. Many entrepreneurs don't realize they're stuck in that gap. They're working hard, juggling responsibilities, hustling nights and weekends — but the business isn't really moving forward. In this episode of Building Better Developers, Army veteran and founder of Skillful Brands, Antwon Person, breaks down what actually creates forward momentum in a business. And it's not hype, hacks, or grinding harder. It's mindset, structure, and knowing when to leverage. The Entrepreneurial Mindset Isn't About Hustle — It's About Structure When Antwon left a 22-year military career and stepped into entrepreneurship, he brought discipline and leadership with him. What he discovered quickly, though, was that discipline alone doesn't build a company. Like many new entrepreneurs, he was busy. Very busy. But busy didn't mean structured. He realized something that most founders eventually learn the hard way: being busy in your business does not build a business. You can answer emails all day. You can tweak branding, post on social media, and chase opportunities. But without structure underneath those actions, you're just reacting — not building. That realization changed everything. Instead of chasing more tactics, he looked for clarity — and found it by connecting with someone who already had a blueprint. Momentum without structure leads to burnout. Structure without momentum leads to stagnation. The entrepreneurial mindset requires both — in the right order. Why Your First Mentor Doesn't Need to Be in Your Industry There's a common mistake new entrepreneurs make: assuming they need a mentor who does exactly what they do. Antwon disagrees — at least in the beginning. When you're building the foundation of a business, the fundamentals are universal. Every business needs clear goals, defined processes, the right mindset, and repeatable systems. At the early stage, what you need most isn't industry secrets — it's business fundamentals. He sees too many entrepreneurs jumping into advanced marketing tactics before they've validated their structure. They're polishing something that hasn't been built properly yet. It's like trying to optimize a machine that hasn't been assembled. Don't work on Phase 3 problems while you're still in Phase 1. Build proof of principle first. Everything else comes after. Once your foundation is solid and revenue is predictable, niche-specific coaching becomes powerful. But without a base, advanced tactics won't stick. The $10K Rule and the Leverage Phase One of the most practical insights from this conversation is Antwon's revenue-based approach to scaling. Up to around $10K per month, many entrepreneurs can manage operations solo — if they have structure. Beyond that point, things change. The workload compounds, communication increases, tasks multiply. Growth creates friction. That's where leverage becomes necessary. Instead of calling it "growth mode," Antwon frames it as entering the leverage phase — and that shift in language matters. Leverage means delegation, systems that support scale, clear onboarding, and defined ownership. Without it, revenue growth just creates exhaustion. With it, growth becomes sustainable. Hiring help isn't about spending money. It's about buying back focus and multiplying capacity. Why Hiring a VA Feels Hard — and How to Fix It For many entrepreneurs, hiring a virtual assistant feels overwhelming. There's hesitation: Will they understand what I need? Is it worth the cost? Will this just create more work for me? Antwon has lived through that. In the early stages, bringing on VAs felt like adding another job to his plate — confusion, repetition, miscommunication. The problem wasn't the VA. It was the lack of onboarding and structure. So he built a system. Now, every VA goes through a clear onboarding process, alignment with company mission and goals, defined task management inside tools like Monday or Asana, and screen-recorded walkthroughs for clarity. Instead of typing long explanations, he records a short screen demo showing exactly what he wants done and attaches it to the task. That single change reduced confusion dramatically. He also emphasizes ownership — VAs aren't treated like task robots, they're treated like team members. That shift alone changes performance. Stop Networking to Sell — Start Networking to Serve Too many entrepreneurs approach networking with one goal: sell. Antwon flips that completely. When he meets someone new, he focuses on learning who they are, understanding what partners they're looking for, offering value first, and leveraging connections instead of pushing services. He even shared a small but practical tactic he picked up in a free mastermind group — placing a QR code on his Zoom background so people could instantly access his information. Not a sales pitch. A friction reducer. And those small adjustments compound over time. The strongest networks aren't built on transactions. They're built on trust, value, and long-term reciprocity. Side Hustle vs. Company: The Real Mindset Shift One of the most important distinctions Antwon makes is between running a business and building a company. A business depends on you. A company operates beyond you. A business can generate income. A company can generate legacy. If your goal is supplemental income, operating as a side hustle may be fine. But if your goal is generational wealth or long-term impact, the mindset must shift. You have to design something that can function without your constant involvement — documented systems, delegated responsibilities, clear structure, leadership beyond yourself. And that shift starts internally. Because the hardest part of entrepreneurship isn't marketing or operations. It's believing you don't have to do it all yourself. The Real Blocker Is Mindset Throughout this episode, one theme keeps resurfacing: mindset is the biggest barrier. Not lack of information. Not a lack of opportunity. Mindset. Entrepreneurs stall because they listen to too many voices, hesitate to start, refuse to delegate, treat a business like a hobby, or avoid structure. Once the mindset shifts, everything else becomes simpler. Not easy — but simpler. Final Takeaway If you feel stuck in your business right now, ask yourself: Are you building something structured — or just staying busy? Have you proven your foundation? Have you entered the leverage phase? Or are you still operating like a side hustle when your goal is a company? Forward momentum doesn't come from more hustle. It comes from clarity, structure, and the willingness to step into the next phase of growth. That's the entrepreneurial mindset shift that changes everything.
On today's episode, we welcome Lucia Smigel, CEO & Co-Founder of Supersmile — the pioneering oral care brand she built alongside her late husband, Dr. Irwin Smigel, known as the “Father of Aesthetic Dentistry.” What began with a clinical breakthrough in tooth bonding evolved into a global brand built on one core belief: the mouth is the gateway to total health. Lucia shares how a personal observation — that traditional toothpaste was too abrasive for bonded teeth — led to the creation of Calprox®, a patented, non-abrasive whitening formula that changed the category. We talk about building a brand from science, leading in a male-dominated industry, stepping fully into CEO after loss, and carrying forward a multi-generational, women-led legacy. A powerful conversation about resilience, innovation, and building something meant to last. This week we're bringing Jason Earle, founder and CEO of GotMold?, back on our podcast to uncover the hidden health impacts of mold exposure. After discovering that mold in his childhood home was the root cause of his severe allergies and asthma, Jason left a successful Wall Street career to help families identify and solve indoor air quality problems. He explains why using bleach on mold can actually make the problem worse and why the key is removing mold, not just trying to kill it. The conversation dives into how to identify a true mold problem using simple cues like what you can see, smell, and feel, along with insights on testing methods, humidifiers, VOCs, and finding the source of contamination. We also explore bigger-picture health topics including limbic retraining, the Cell Danger Response, and Jason's philosophy that optimal health comes down to “air, food, and attitude.” Jason Earle is a man on a mission. An adoring father of two boys, incurable entrepreneur and indoor air quality crusader, he is the founder & CEO of GOT MOLD?, and the creator of the GOT MOLD?® Test Kit. The realization that his moldy childhood home was the underlying cause of his extreme allergies and asthma, led him into the healthy home business in 2002, leaving behind a successful career on Wall Street. Over the last two decades, Jason has personally performed countless sick building investigations, solving many medical mysteries along the way, helping thousands of families recover their health and peace of mind. In this special episode of Beyond The Technique, Kati Whitledge sits down with a very familiar guest—her husband, Anson Whitledge, VP of Operations at Inspired Enterprises—to share the unexpected journey that led him from electrical engineering and tech startups into the beauty industry. Anson opens up about growing up in rural Wisconsin, building early businesses in video production, and developing a deep passion for technology, systems, and now AI. Together, they share the behind-the-scenes story of how a chance salon visit (and an accidental bald spot!) sparked both a relationship and a business partnership. The conversation also dives into Anson's bold decision to leave a stable corporate career to help Kati grow their salon and technology ventures—just months before the pandemic reshaped everything. Salon and spa owners will walk away with insights on resilience, partnership in business, and the power of combining technology, systems, and leadership to build something meaningful.
