Episode #127. This week, I'm joined by the multi-talented Amy Wilson—writer, actor, and co-host of the hit podcast What Fresh Hell. We talk about the invisible weight of being the “helpful one,” the push-pull of people-pleasing, and why creativity can't live in the leftovers of our time. Amy shares the real story behind her new book Happy to Help—a funny, thoughtful collection of essays for anyone who's ever stayed too long, tried too hard, or ignored their own needs. We dive into what happens when we try to fix everything—until we can't. We talk boundaries, burnout, and the power of giving yourself permission to write messy, live messy, and be okay with not having it all figured out. If you've been waiting for permission to make space for your creativity, your joy, and your voice—this is it. Take a walk, grab a puzzle, and let this conversation remind you: your time matters too. “An interdisciplinary approach to medicine is probably the way the future is going to go. There will be dieticians and a whole host of different people involved in helping someone to heal.” —Jonathan Carp   For too long, we've been told that health comes in a medicine bottle or a doctor's office, but what if the real power lies in the food we choose every day? If you've ever felt frustrated by quick fixes that don't last or wondered how to make healthy changes that actually stick, you're not alone—and this episode is for you. Dr. Jonathan Carp is a board-certified dermatologist and the founder of Miracle Noodle, a company born from his passion for using nutrition and lifestyle to transform health. With years of experience helping patients and building a wellness brand, he's on a mission to make healthy eating accessible, enjoyable, and truly life-changing. Tune in as Justine and Dr. Carp break down the myths about comfort food, reveal how small changes can lead to big results, and share real stories of healing, grit, and the surprising joy of eating well.   Meet Jonathan: A Dermatologist since 2000, Dr. Jonathan Carp started Miracle Noodle in 2006. In 2004, he had a patient who healed herself from lupus through nutritional and lifestyle modification. Since then, he has treated hundreds of patients through lifestyle modification, especially nutritional changes, with a special interest in auto-immune diseases. This has turned into a nutritional obsession that led to his learning about the health benefits of the konjac plant. While he still practices medicine, a significant amount of time is now also devoted to Miracle Noodle and exploring and testing healthy, healing food options based on traditional cultural diets. Dr. Carp firmly believes that all that ails us in the world today could be solved by going back a few generations and making sure that the nutritional wisdom of our ancestors is remembered and combined with the latest science. While Miracle Noodle keeps him busy, it has allowed him the resources to investigate and learn about the nutritional wisdom of the world and how to get products and knowledge out to the world through his patients and his companies.

In this episode, I'm joined by Heather Thompson Day, whose insights challenge our perceptions of success, passion, and the presence of God in our lives. Heather boldly explores the idea that our true story isn't found in the circumstances we face, but rather in how we respond to them. We dive into themes from her powerful book, What If I'm Wrong?, discussing how passion is not about acclaim or abundance but about faithful presence even in uncertainty and failure. Together, we uncover how deeply God's faithfulness and presence are intertwined in our stories—especially when life doesn't go according to our plans. Heather's wisdom and authenticity offer a refreshing invitation to live with courage and purpose, even when we're navigating doubts and difficulties. So join us for an honest conversation about embracing passion, redefining success, and finding peace in God's enduring presence.Dr. Heather Thompson Day is an interdenominational speaker, an ECPA bestseller, and has been a contributor for Religion News Service, Christianity Today, Newsweek and the Barna Group. Podcast Talent Coach

This will be the final episode of Podcast Talent Coach. It has been a great journey through 550 shows. But, it has reached its destination. WHEN I REALIZED IT WAS THE END I've met a lot of great people. The things I've learned are immeasurable. The journey has been incredible. As I was shaping this episode, I thought about a variety of approaches. The 7 things I learned over 550 episodes. The top ten people I've met. The list of mentors who shaped my success. Everything I considered seemed cliché. So, I'm just taking you to how it came to be. The end of the show came to me during my latest launch. As the cart close approached, I realized the end was near. WHERE IT STARTED This all started 20 years ago. In a March 2005 edition of Wired Magazine, I came across an article about MTV VJ Adam Curry. The article was called "Adam Curry Wants You To Be An iPod Radio Star". The article mentioned that Curry was the brains behind iPodder, described as the offspring of the blog and the Apple MP3 player. This was the beginning of podcasting. And I was fascinated. Unfortunately, I had no interest in tech. A few years later I got my first iPhone. I was soon downloading podcasts. By 2009, I was in love with the format. By this time, I had been coaching radio talent for about 15 years with a successful radio show of my own. As I listened to these podcasts, I thought they could be so much more effective if they just used the techniques we used in radio to connect with an audience. They just didn't know what they didn't know. It was still the wild west. MY PERSONAL LAUNCH I started creating content. By 2012 I was speaking on stage at events like New Media Expo and BlogWorld. In June 2013, this podcast was launched. It was also the month that Ken Allan became my first coaching client. He came to me help him create stronger content and a more compelling show. Over the years, I've coached many incredible content creators. I've created a few courses and live programs. There have been webinars that have completely crashed, 3-day events that have been incredible, and lots in between. As the years went on, I started drifting away from stronger content and more toward launching podcasts. THE DRIFT STARTED HAPPENING As I would explain what I do to help people create effective content, people would say, "That sounds great, Erik... but I don't have a podcast." Launching a podcast isn't the tough part. The struggle is figuring out what to do with your podcast. Getting to grow and using it to generate revenue are the areas that create challenges for people. But, they wanted me to help them launch. So, I did. I launched the Podcast Launch Accelerator to help people launch in 30 days. That's when I started attracting people who didn't have a podcast rather than those that needed help with content and growth. Two problems come from this. First, I was attracting people who needed help launching rather than those who wanted more effective content. Second, I was now more into tech and less into how to use it. Exactly where I didn't want to be. BACK TO MY ROOTS So, I got back to my roots. I dove into become influential with your content. My content became more about who you are, how you share your story, and how you move a room to action. We were talking less about how to launch. I recently did market research around influence and impact. I talked to dozens of people about where they struggle regarding becoming someone worth listening to. Their challenges were right in my wheelhouse. When the program was developed, I rolled it out. It was offered in one-on-one calls, workshops, and short info sessions. Of all the people who saw the opportunity, only one purchased. Over the years, I've tried different approaches with different courses. I have some amazing clients and a wonderful group program. The revenue has been solid and growing over the years. It just isn't where I hoped it would be. KNOW WHEN TO END IT Dan Miller was one of my mentors with 48 Days To The Work and Life You Love. He and I shared a birthday, though years apart. We lost Dan at the beginning of 2024. Dan always said you should be able to tell in about 90 days if a business idea has legs. He should know. Dan launched many businesses, some successful, some not so much. He also thought "winners never quit and quitters never win" was a false cliché. In a blog post and podcast episode, Dan said, "I constantly have areas in my business and life that are on the bubble. If they are not proven successful in a very specific period of time – they're gone – I quit but keep moving on to success in other ways." Dan's point was that winners know when to quit. NOT IN THE NUMBERS It happened as I was crunching the numbers from the latest launch and examining the results of 2024 in my business. I came to the realization that the success wasn't where I wanted it to be. During my mastermind call three days later, I explained what I was thinking. That when it was confirmed. It's time to find the next fun thing to pursue. There are 550 episodes here to serve you and help you shape your content. The first 275 episodes are solo with just me, except for episode 200. I sprinkled in some great interviews with some amazing people over the next 275. Find them all here: PODCAST TALENT COACH EPISODES It has been a blast. I can't thank you enough for coming along on the journey. We've done some incredible things. I'm not sure what's next. There are a few things I want to try. I'm sure a podcast will be part of it. I'm sure we'll cross paths again down the road. Until then, remember to always tell the truth, always make it matter, and always have fun. I'll see ya soon.

Cast are in the strongest position they've been in for decades. Their 2023 album Love Is The Call received widespread critical acclaim and earned their highest chart position in 25 years. Now, they're preparing to support Oasis on the UK and Ireland leg of their hugely anticipated stadium reunion tour — a landmark moment for the Liverpool band. Once those stadium shows wrap, Cast will return to their roots with the 30 Years of All Change tour, performing their beloved 1995 debut album in full. Featuring timeless tracks like ‘Alright', ‘Finetime', ‘Sandstorm' and ‘Walkaway', All Change remains one of the defining records of the Britpop era. It debuted at #7, went Platinum, and spent nearly a year in the UK Top 40. I couldn't be more excited to share this episode with you! Ryan Shelton has been on the top of my guest wish list since I started Pass Around the Smile. His episode on the Imperfects Podcast on Shame, Jealousy and Purpose changed my life. And today, I hope this episode can have a similar effect on my beautiful community!Ryan and I have a very open, casual, yet vulnerable conversation about the struggles we have both faced within the film and television industry. We dive into everything from rejection and competition, to the emotional resilience it takes to keep going ~ and the tough inner dialogue that shows up when we feel like we've failed. Ryan is so generous in sharing his thoughts ~ which I know will help my Smilie's feel understood on many different levels. We also chat about how our goals can shift over time, and how doing the inner work can reveal that the big milestone we were chasing may not actually be what brings us happiness. Often, we place so much pressure on one “peak moment” that we forget to celebrate the beautiful things happening in between. This episode is a powerful reminder that joy, success, and fulfilment aren't reserved for some far-off finish line ~ they're available to us now, in the everyday.A BIT ABOUT RYAN: Ryan Shelton is a writer, actor, comedian, producer and podcast host who somehow manages to keep heart at the centre of everything he does. Send us feedback/questions via TextIn this episode, we talk about the unpredictability of podcasting when things like power outages shut things down, strategies for running better interviews, and the importance of prepping your guests and your own questions. We dig into what actually makes a podcast “advanced,” swapping thoughts on whether it's about the gear, the content, skill, style, or just deeper expertise, and debate the value and pitfalls of reading guest bios and how to make your intros less boring. We explore why podcasting should stay fun (using Kevin Chemidlin's rebranding example), how to analyze whether your episodes are resonating through completion stats, and why being flexible and responsive to your audience is key. We also field questions about buying email lists for podcast marketing, talk about using AI for scripting and idea generation, and share advice for podcasters who want to stand out and grow their shows, emphasizing relationships and community over shortcuts. As always, we have a ton of laughs, plenty of audience participation, and the kind of practical tips and real talk every podcaster craves.Sponsors:PodcastBranding.co - They see you before they hear youBasedonastruestorypodcast.com - Comparing Hollywood with History?Mentioned In This EpisodeSchool of Podcastinghttps://www.schoolofpodcasting.com/joinPodpagehttp://www.trypodpage.comHome Gadget Geekshttps://www.homegadgegeeks.comEcamm Livehttps://supportthisshow.com/ecammEmber Community Training https://supportthisshow.com/emberDealcasters Appearancehttps://www.podpage.com/dealcasters/unlock-your-podcasts-front-door-with-dave-jackson/Video VersionChapters:00:00 Introduction and Welcome00:31 Power Outage Stories01:40 Sponsor Shoutouts04:57 Interview Tips and Techniques20:04 Advanced Podcasting Discussion30:50 Listener Questions and Feedback41:46 The Value of Longer Content44:06 Effective Call to Action Strategies44:39 Monetizing Your Content45:35 The Importance of Audience Engagement47:27 Challenges with Facebook Groups49:36 UnderThis week's awesome supporter is Greg from the Indie Drop-in Network. The Third Story Podcast with Leo Sidran

Legendary singer-songwriter Suzanne Vega looks back at her remarkable career — and forward to her new album, Flying with Angels, her first collection of original songs in nearly a decade. From the moment she emerged in the 1980s with her self-titled debut and follow-up Solitude Standing, Vega has occupied a singular space in popular music. Known for her literate lyrics, calm delivery, and understated innovation, she became an unlikely pop star with songs like “Luka” — a devastating portrait of abuse — and “Tom's Diner,” which began as an a cappella sketch and became a surprise dance hit, later used in the development of the MP3 format. Vega discusses how those early hits shaped her identity, and how she's maintained a relationship with her past work while continuing to evolve as an artist. She shares stories behind her biggest songs, her longtime collaborations (including with producer and ex-husband Mitchell Froom), and her connection to a vibrant downtown New York songwriting community that included figures like Jack Hardy and Fast Folk magazine. She also reflects on the new material, including the haunting “Mariaupol,” inspired by the war in Ukraine, and “Rats,” inspired during the lockdown in New York. These songs mark a subtle shift for Vega: from her usual allegorical storytelling to more direct commentary and bearing witness to events in real time. Along the way, the conversation touches on Lou Reed, Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan, motherhood, stagecraft, artistic responsibility, and the strange alchemy of simplicity and resonance. Vega shares anecdotes from her life on tour, her early performances (including a childhood appearance at Pete Seeger's feet), and her unexpected intersections with technology and culture. www.third-story.com www.leosidran.substack.com www.wbgo.org/podcast/the-third-story
