One Piece, Highlander Reboot, and the Rise of Space Operas | Distance Nerding Interview Pt. 2

Geek Freaks

In this lively episode of GeekFreaks Podcast, Frank and the gang dig deep into the latest pop culture chatter. We cover the lively debate over which fictional characters would thrive on social media, break down the intense new trailer for One Piece season two, and share candid thoughts on the Highlander reboot casting news. Squeaks and Jonathan pitch their dream remakes and sequels, from Short Circuit to Back to the Future. We also talk about DC's rumored “henchman” movie—and pitch our own cheeky DC headlines. Lastly, the crew celebrates the return of space opera epics and welcomes Distance Nerd's Jen, Liam, and Graveyard for a spirited interview on fandom culture. Timestamps & Topics 00:00:00 – 00:03:00 – Introduction and “Fictional Characters on Social Media” debate: Star‑Lord, Joker, Riddler, and Flash. 00:03:00 – 00:06:00 – One Piece season two trailer reaction: multiple arcs, what to expect from Reverse Mountain and Alabasta, and Chopper's introduction. 00:06:00 – 00:08:00 – Does anime need to stick to the manga? Filler episodes versus character moments. 00:08:00 – 00:11:30 – News: Dave Bautista cast in the Highlander reboot—why the debate around his physique doesn't matter. 00:11:30 – 00:15:00 – What remakes do we actually want? Ideas range from Short Circuit's AI twist to a refreshed Back to the Future. 00:15:00 – 00:20:00 – Squeaks' ultimate pitch: E.T. returns—and he's connected to the Star Wars Senate cameo? 00:20:00 – 00:27:00 – DC rumors: Zach Cregger's “Henchman” script, who could carry a story about the accidental capture of Batman, and why Elseworlds stories are fun. 00:27:00 – 00:38:00 – Main Discussion: The renaissance of space operas. From Dune and Avatar to upcoming Star Wars projects and the importance of spectacle, practical effects vs. CGI, and why grand storytelling is back. 00:38:00 – 00:49:00 – “Geek Culture and Community” interview with Distance Nerd's Jen, Graveyard, and Liam: building an online fan community, favorite sci‑fi properties, and how their live podcast style resonates with listeners. 00:49:00 – 01:09:00 – More pop culture news and games: Marvel's Green Lantern theory, fake DC news challenge, and the crew's comedic speculations on Mr. Freeze, Clayface, and Ryan Reynolds' ultimate crossover. 01:09:00 – end – Wrap‑up: Episode highlights, network updates, content from other podcasts, and personal recommendations—how King of the Hill's return hits the right notes, why Dope Thief on Apple TV is a sleeper hit, and more. Key Takeaways Fictional characters on TikTok? The gang imagines Star‑Lord taking selfies across galaxies, the Riddler fostering a cult following, and Flash zipping around doing livestreams from inside STAR Labs. One Piece season two will be jam‑packed. Squeaks notes the show will likely fold multiple arcs into one season, meaning nonstop action and beloved characters like Chopper and Nico Robin. Remakes done right: While the crew is wary of endless reboots, they'd love to see Short Circuit reimagined with modern AI themes or a thoughtful sequel to E.T. set in today's world. DC's “henchman” movie intrigues. Zach Cregger's script idea follows a low‑level villain who accidentally knocks out Batman and then wrestles with what to do—worth exploring as an Elseworlds story, especially if it digs into Gotham's underclass. Space operas are back. Thanks to Dune, Avatar, and upcoming Star Wars films, the spectacle‑heavy genre is enjoying a resurgence. The team loves the blend of practical effects and CGI when done well, but they emphasize the need for strong characters and meaningful themes. Geek culture lives online. Jen, Liam, and Graveyard from Distance Nerd share how they've cultivated a welcoming space for fans and why live, improvisational podcasting keeps the energy high. Fun with fake news. The hosts plan to prank DC fans with tongue‑in‑cheek rumors—like Batman stealing Green Lantern's ring or Mr. Freeze battling Clayface—just to poke fun at internet speculation. Personal recs: King of the Hill's revival hits all the right notes, Dope Thief on Apple TV delivers gripping crime drama, and Apple TV quietly produces award‑worthy content. Memorable Quotes “Thriving on social media doesn't mean everybody loves you—it just means you have a huge following.” – Frank “Star‑Lord with different aliens, different species, fighting and selfies in strange worlds? Yes, please!” – Squeaks “Sometimes the monsters show us what it means to be human.” – Frank on beloved AI and sci‑fi themes “Practical effects still matter; CGI needs to be done beautifully—think Dune's sandworms or Avatar's Pandora.” – Squeaks “We're casual, we're opinionated, and we're fans of fans. That's what Distance Nerd stands for.” – Jen Call to Action Love what you hear? Help us continue bringing you thoughtful geek discussions every week!

What does it take to leave a stable corporate job and dive into filmmaking, without a studio, budget, or backing? In this compelling episode, Ananyabrata Chakravorty, writer-director of Kaisi Ye Paheli, shares his courageous journey from Bangalore's tech corridors to Mumbai's indie film sets. From managing bands and writing lyrics in college to sharing screen space with Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan, Ananyabrata has carved a path that defies convention. In this episode, he opens up about the real challenges of breaking into Bollywood, the politics of storytelling, and why resilience is a filmmaker's greatest asset.Key Takeaways:Ananyabrata's initial goal was to adapt his novel into a film but he had to learn screenwriting and directing to get there. In India, filmmakers are often forced to fit into studio or festival frameworks, leaving little room for honest storytelling. His debut film uses dark comedy and murder mystery to explore deeply personal themes.Smart casting can elevate a film: Collaborating with talents like Rajat Kapoor and Sadhana Singh added depth and nuance to his narrative.Acting paid the bills: He gave over 700 auditions, landing gigs with Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan, to financially sustain his filmmaking dream.Staying true to his story landed his film at the New York Indian Film Festival, even without ticking the usual “festival film” boxes. The industry needs a reboot: There's a call for better systems to discover new scripts and storytellers, beyond the current studio gatekeeping.Chapters:00:00 Highlights01:02 The Leap from Corporate to Cinema06:31 Navigating the Filmmaking Landscape10:35 The Challenge of Authentic Storytelling17:34 Crafting a Unique Narrative23:43 The Journey of Kaise Yeh Paheli28:58 Casting Choices and Poetic Connections33:29 Funding Challenges and Crowdfunding Insights36:09 Navigating Genres and Finding Your Voice39:02 Support for First-Time Filmmakers and Industry ChangesConnect with UsMohua Chinappa: https://www.linkedin.com/in/mohua-chinappa/The Mohua Show: https://www.themohuashow.com/Connect with the GuestAnanyabrata: https://www.instagram.com/ananyabrata_chakravorty/ Follow UsYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@TheMohuaShowLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/themohuashow/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/themohuashowInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/themohuashow/For any other queries EMAILhello@themohuashow.comDisclaimerThe views expressed by our guests are their own. In this episode of the XS Noize Podcast, Mark Millar is joined by Peter Cunnah and Al Mackenzie — the pioneering duo behind D:Ream — to discuss their vibrant and defiant new album, Do It Anyway. Best known for their iconic #1 hit "Things Can Only Get Better," D:Ream became a cultural phenomenon throughout the '90s and beyond — from chart domination and BRIT Award nominations to political soundtracking and, most recently, going viral again at Glastonbury 2024 with Professor Brian Cox back on the keys. Now, with Do It Anyway — their first album in over a decade, out August 8 via Chrysalis — D:Ream return with a record bursting with fresh energy, clubland spirit, and sharp cultural commentary. Do It Anyway is a genre-hopping ride through electro-pop, trip-hop, gospel, broken beats, and dancefloor nostalgia. From the title track — rooted in a long-lost Kylie demo from the '90s — to politically charged cuts like The Geek Who Rules the World and Anthem for Change, the album bridges past and present with fearless creativity and purpose. In this wide-ranging conversation, Peter and Al open up about reconnecting with the rave-fuelled energy that first brought them together — and how they've kept that spark alive through decades of transformation. They explore the club culture that shaped their early sound, the stubborn creative drive that still fuels them, and the joy of collaborating with voices like Lisa Moorish, Ella B, TJ Davis, and Gemma Doherty. Tune in to Episode #237 of the XS Noize Podcast for a candid, funny, and inspiring deep dive into D:Ream's legacy, evolution, and bold new chapter.  Or listen via YouTube | Apple Podcasts | Spotify | Amazon Music | RSS – Find The XS Noize Podcast's complete archive of episodes here. “An interdisciplinary approach to medicine is probably the way the future is going to go. There will be dieticians and a whole host of different people involved in helping someone to heal.” —Jonathan Carp   For too long, we've been told that health comes in a medicine bottle or a doctor's office, but what if the real power lies in the food we choose every day? If you've ever felt frustrated by quick fixes that don't last or wondered how to make healthy changes that actually stick, you're not alone—and this episode is for you. Dr. Jonathan Carp is a board-certified dermatologist and the founder of Miracle Noodle, a company born from his passion for using nutrition and lifestyle to transform health. With years of experience helping patients and building a wellness brand, he's on a mission to make healthy eating accessible, enjoyable, and truly life-changing. Tune in as Justine and Dr. Carp break down the myths about comfort food, reveal how small changes can lead to big results, and share real stories of healing, grit, and the surprising joy of eating well.   Meet Jonathan: A Dermatologist since 2000, Dr. Jonathan Carp started Miracle Noodle in 2006. In 2004, he had a patient who healed herself from lupus through nutritional and lifestyle modification. Since then, he has treated hundreds of patients through lifestyle modification, especially nutritional changes, with a special interest in auto-immune diseases. This has turned into a nutritional obsession that led to his learning about the health benefits of the konjac plant. While he still practices medicine, a significant amount of time is now also devoted to Miracle Noodle and exploring and testing healthy, healing food options based on traditional cultural diets. Dr. Carp firmly believes that all that ails us in the world today could be solved by going back a few generations and making sure that the nutritional wisdom of our ancestors is remembered and combined with the latest science. While Miracle Noodle keeps him busy, it has allowed him the resources to investigate and learn about the nutritional wisdom of the world and how to get products and knowledge out to the world through his patients and his companies. In this episode, I'm joined by Heather Thompson Day, whose insights challenge our perceptions of success, passion, and the presence of God in our lives. Heather boldly explores the idea that our true story isn't found in the circumstances we face, but rather in how we respond to them. We dive into themes from her powerful book, What If I'm Wrong?, discussing how passion is not about acclaim or abundance but about faithful presence even in uncertainty and failure. Together, we uncover how deeply God's faithfulness and presence are intertwined in our stories—especially when life doesn't go according to our plans. Heather's wisdom and authenticity offer a refreshing invitation to live with courage and purpose, even when we're navigating doubts and difficulties. So join us for an honest conversation about embracing passion, redefining success, and finding peace in God's enduring presence.Dr. Heather Thompson Day is an interdenominational speaker, an ECPA bestseller, and has been a contributor for Religion News Service, Christianity Today, Newsweek and the Barna Group. Podcast Talent Coach

This will be the final episode of Podcast Talent Coach. It has been a great journey through 550 shows. But, it has reached its destination. WHEN I REALIZED IT WAS THE END I've met a lot of great people. The things I've learned are immeasurable. The journey has been incredible. As I was shaping this episode, I thought about a variety of approaches. The 7 things I learned over 550 episodes. The top ten people I've met. The list of mentors who shaped my success. Everything I considered seemed cliché. So, I'm just taking you to how it came to be. The end of the show came to me during my latest launch. As the cart close approached, I realized the end was near. WHERE IT STARTED This all started 20 years ago. In a March 2005 edition of Wired Magazine, I came across an article about MTV VJ Adam Curry. The article was called "Adam Curry Wants You To Be An iPod Radio Star". The article mentioned that Curry was the brains behind iPodder, described as the offspring of the blog and the Apple MP3 player. This was the beginning of podcasting. And I was fascinated. Unfortunately, I had no interest in tech. A few years later I got my first iPhone. I was soon downloading podcasts. By 2009, I was in love with the format. By this time, I had been coaching radio talent for about 15 years with a successful radio show of my own. As I listened to these podcasts, I thought they could be so much more effective if they just used the techniques we used in radio to connect with an audience. They just didn't know what they didn't know. It was still the wild west. MY PERSONAL LAUNCH I started creating content. By 2012 I was speaking on stage at events like New Media Expo and BlogWorld. In June 2013, this podcast was launched. It was also the month that Ken Allan became my first coaching client. He came to me help him create stronger content and a more compelling show. Over the years, I've coached many incredible content creators. I've created a few courses and live programs. There have been webinars that have completely crashed, 3-day events that have been incredible, and lots in between. As the years went on, I started drifting away from stronger content and more toward launching podcasts. THE DRIFT STARTED HAPPENING As I would explain what I do to help people create effective content, people would say, "That sounds great, Erik... but I don't have a podcast." Launching a podcast isn't the tough part. The struggle is figuring out what to do with your podcast. Getting to grow and using it to generate revenue are the areas that create challenges for people. But, they wanted me to help them launch. So, I did. I launched the Podcast Launch Accelerator to help people launch in 30 days. That's when I started attracting people who didn't have a podcast rather than those that needed help with content and growth. Two problems come from this. First, I was attracting people who needed help launching rather than those who wanted more effective content. Second, I was now more into tech and less into how to use it. Exactly where I didn't want to be. BACK TO MY ROOTS So, I got back to my roots. I dove into become influential with your content. My content became more about who you are, how you share your story, and how you move a room to action. We were talking less about how to launch. I recently did market research around influence and impact. I talked to dozens of people about where they struggle regarding becoming someone worth listening to. Their challenges were right in my wheelhouse. When the program was developed, I rolled it out. It was offered in one-on-one calls, workshops, and short info sessions. Of all the people who saw the opportunity, only one purchased. Over the years, I've tried different approaches with different courses. I have some amazing clients and a wonderful group program. The revenue has been solid and growing over the years. It just isn't where I hoped it would be. KNOW WHEN TO END IT Dan Miller was one of my mentors with 48 Days To The Work and Life You Love. He and I shared a birthday, though years apart. We lost Dan at the beginning of 2024. Dan always said you should be able to tell in about 90 days if a business idea has legs. He should know. Dan launched many businesses, some successful, some not so much. He also thought "winners never quit and quitters never win" was a false cliché. In a blog post and podcast episode, Dan said, "I constantly have areas in my business and life that are on the bubble. If they are not proven successful in a very specific period of time – they're gone – I quit but keep moving on to success in other ways." Dan's point was that winners know when to quit. NOT IN THE NUMBERS It happened as I was crunching the numbers from the latest launch and examining the results of 2024 in my business. I came to the realization that the success wasn't where I wanted it to be. During my mastermind call three days later, I explained what I was thinking. That when it was confirmed. It's time to find the next fun thing to pursue. There are 550 episodes here to serve you and help you shape your content. The first 275 episodes are solo with just me, except for episode 200. I sprinkled in some great interviews with some amazing people over the next 275. Find them all here: PODCAST TALENT COACH EPISODES It has been a blast. I can't thank you enough for coming along on the journey. We've done some incredible things. I'm not sure what's next. There are a few things I want to try. I'm sure a podcast will be part of it. I'm sure we'll cross paths again down the road. Until then, remember to always tell the truth, always make it matter, and always have fun. I'll see ya soon.
