As the creator of Nothing Much Happens and the author of the audio novel On the Street Where You Live, Kathryn Nicolai has built an interconnected world where listeners can feel safe, soften their guard and step away from the noise of modern life. In this conversation, Kathryn explains how 20 years of teaching yoga prepared her to speak to millions of listeners, why she created a genre she calls “healing fiction,” and how storytelling can quietly bring people into a state of mindfulness without asking them to meditate. She also shares the discipline behind her enormous creative output, the role safety plays in making art, the practices she uses to regulate her own mind and why our lives were never meant to be constantly optimized. This is a conversation about sleep, creativity, community and creating softer places to land—in our minds, our neighbourhoods and our lives. EXCITING STUFF! Leyla Muedin, a registered dietitian nutritionist in New York City, discusses the growing shift from symptom-only “sick care” to a clinically grounded holistic approach to health and recovery. She argues that self-guided wellness routines can leave gaps when underlying medical issues, mental health conditions, substance use disorders, or trauma remain unaddressed, and emphasizes integrating evidence-based clinical evaluation (including labs and deficiency testing) with lifestyle practices. She explains how treating symptoms in isolation misses connections (e.g., stress, sleep, grief) and defines true holistic care as addressing physical, mental, emotional, relational, environmental, and purpose-related factors without rejecting medical treatment. Key components include consistent movement, individualized nutrition built on basics, nervous system regulation (sleep, nature, breathing, meditation/prayer), meaningful social connection, and a sense of purpose as clinically relevant to resilience.
Why do so many women feel guilty for taking care of themselves? In this episode, Dr. mOe sits down with former speech pathologist, entrepreneur, and author Catherine Crestani to explore the hidden cost of chronic self-abandonment. Together, they discuss why success doesn't always bring fulfillment, how people-pleasing affects our health and relationships, and why self-care is essential—not selfish. In This Episode, You'll Learn: Why achievement and fulfillment are not the same thing. The hidden signs of chronic self-abandonment. How guilt keeps many women from prioritizing self-care. Why burnout, resentment, and poor health often begin with ignoring your own needs. How to rebuild self-trust and make decisions with confidence. Why fear of the unknown keeps people stuck in unhealthy relationships and careers. How language and mindset influence personal growth. The inspiration behind Catherine's novel, My Virtual Obsession. I only have one kiddo, although sometimes I wished I had a second so that I could implement everything I learned! Those first few years were so lonely. I was overwhelmed and didn't have a lot of resources, and it made me realize how our society doesn't support families and especially moms. Change is necessary, but cultural and legislative change moves slowly, so I figured out how to help myself. It wasn't necessarily the ideal solution, but it was the one available to me at the time. The answer was self-care.And if you haven't watched it yet, here is one of my favorite podcasts ever: Mindset Tools for Winning at Life. Crusaders, the lights are out! At least for Joey anyway. This week our besties are manifesting a big career and big money for Joey, as he needs his electricity and Netflix. Meanwhile, Snooki prepares for her upcoming surgery, breaking down all the self-care gadgetry from laxatives to body binders, to help keep herself comfortable, and hopefully, pain free. Keep the recommendations coming, crusaders. The duo doubles down on streaming channels everywhere, demanding that if we’re going to binge our shows, at least let’s be able to watch them every year. Who has time to wait two years for a new season? Our besties question what would social media have been like if millennials had them in our teenage years. One thing is for certain, we’d all end up in jail. As for millennials today, Myspace is apparently making a comeback! Are we ready for another round of “My Top 8”? The besties go even harder with old school quizzes from YM Magazine and BuzzFeed. Crusaders, how well do you know your 2000s MTV shows? Snooki and Joey get spooked on this week’s hotline, from zombie roosters to unavailable “businessmen,” the duo are dealing out their best advice. On this week’s Confession Sessions, sponsored by Hard Rock Bet, Joey literally spills the beans, while Snooki reveals her secret catfishing scheme. Hello chat rooms? The 2000s are calling and Snooki and Joey have answered. #Volume See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

TO PURCHASE VINNIE'S WORKOUT VIDEOS, CLICK THIS LINK: https://vinnietortorich.com/workout Success from Resilience Vinnie argues that people who achieve big things keep going through pain, setbacks, and repeated failure. (4:00) He uses examples like Elon Musk, Thomas Edison, Alexander Graham Bell, Tom Brady, Michael Jordan, and Lou Gehrig to illustrate that success usually follows repeated misses. Success is measured by failure tolerance, or, as Vinnie likes to call it, FQ (Failure Quotient). Resilience is important in life, and the only way to build it is through challenges. Accountability and consistency matter more than motivation alone, especially with weight loss and addiction. He says food addiction is real and that tools like GLP-1s are not a cure-all. Vinnie has a 45th high school reunion coming up. (33:00) He recounts the previous reunion he went to several years ago. The reunion story becomes a reflection on time, aging, lost classmates, and the shock of seeing how much people change. He became motivated to train harder and stay in shape for longevity and health. Is social media fitness advice targeted at women, myth or truth? (41:00) They review four specific claims regarding eating, fasting, and working out. Vinnie's advice: eat real food, train, hydrate, and don't get distracted by fitness influencer contradictions. Supply, cost, and food politics often make healthy eating harder due to economics and policy. Or is it something Jesus actually invites us to practice? In this conversation, John Ortberg sits down with psychiatrist Dr. Rick Blackmon to explore Dallas Willard's vision of soul care from The Renovation of the Heart. Together they discuss emotional health, burnout, self-denial, and why understanding yourself is the first step toward caring for yourself well.Discover why true self-care isn't about self-indulgence, but about cultivating the kind of life that allows you to love God and serve others with greater joy, wisdom, and endurance.

JeaNette Smith is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist who authored Side by Side: Supporting a Spouse in Church Service to help couples keep their relationships strong and connected amidst demanding Church callings or busy careers. Her inspiration for the book came early in her career while her husband, Bret, was serving as a bishop, leading her to study how couples can actively grow closer rather than drift apart during intense seasons of service. Over their years together, JeaNette and Bret have put these principles into practice across numerous callings, including three bishoprics, a branch presidency, a stake presidency, and as mission leaders in the Dominican Republic. JeaNette is a frequent contributor to Meridian Magazine and the author of two books on adolescent romance. JeaNette and Bret are the parents of four children and the grandparents of fifteen. They continue to work side by side in their family life and with their grandchildren. Links Side by Side: Supporting a Spouse in Church Service Watch the video and share your thoughts in the Zion Lab community Transcript available with the video in the Zion Lab community Highlights JeaNette explores how couples can navigate demanding Church callings without straining their relationship. Drawing on her personal background supporting her husband across various leadership roles and her professional expertise, JeaNette emphasizes that Church callings should be treated as shared, couple-centered opportunities that strengthen marriages rather than burden them. Key Insights Viewing Callings as a Team Effort: Demanding leadership positions run much smoother and foster deeper connection when couples view the assignment as a joint effort, with the leader using their spouse as a trusted sounding board and counselor. Navigating Confidentiality Wisely: Leaders should refrain from complete emotional isolation; while specific names and details must remain private, sharing emotional burdens, general concerns, and spiritual joys keeps the couple connected and avoids emotional drift. Emotional Availability Matters Most: Marital tension rarely stems from physical absence alone; it arises when leaders become emotionally disengaged and fail to share their inner thoughts and feelings with their spouse. Prioritizing Intentional Connection: Daily practices—such as morning companionship scripture study, short check-ins, or casual dates—help maintain alignment and ensure open channels of communication. Maintaining Appropriate Motives and Boundaries: Spouses must approach confidential insights with pure motives aimed at lifting burdens rather than satisfying curiosity, while leaders must genuinely value their spouse’s wisdom as an equal partner. Prioritizing Personal Self-Care: Spouses and leaders alike must prioritize self-care and personal well-being to avoid resentment and build the capacity needed to serve others effectively. Leadership Applications Integrate Daily Companionship Study: Leaders can establish a daily routine with their spouse to study scriptures, pray, and discuss upcoming ward or stake needs together to invite shared revelation. Share the Emotional Weight Without Oversharing: Leaders can share their personal feelings, fatigue, or spiritual insights with their spouse to process stress safely without revealing confidential names or specific details. Involve Your Spouse in Leadership Activities: Where appropriate, leaders can invite their spouses to attend youth activities, missionary setting-aparts, or stake events together to make service a fun, shared experience. 00:02:00 – Jeanette’s Background Jeanette shares her personal experiences as a bishop’s wife and her professional background as a marriage and family therapist. 00:04:30 – Navigating Marriage and Church Callings Discussion on how church callings can strain relationships and the importance of turning these challenges into opportunities for growth. 00:07:00 – The Importance of Communication Exploration of the need for open communication between spouses regarding church responsibilities and the emotional burdens they carry. 00:09:30 – Confidentiality and Trust Jeanette emphasizes the balance between confidentiality in church leadership and the necessity of sharing feelings and experiences with one's spouse. 00:12:00 – Shared Experiences in Leadership The significance of couples working together in church callings and how it strengthens their relationship. 00:15:00 – Companionship Study Jeanette discusses the practice of companionship study and its benefits for couples in leadership roles. 00:18:00 – Advice for Newly Called Couples Tips for couples newly called to leadership positions on how to navigate their responsibilities together. 00:21:00 – Maintaining Trustworthiness The importance of being a trustworthy spouse and the need to keep confidences regarding ward matters. 00:23:30 – Friendship Dynamics Discussion on the shift in relationships for bishop’s wives and the importance of maintaining friendships outside of church. 00:26:00 – Self-Care for Spouses Jeanette highlights the necessity of self-care for spouses in leadership to better support their partners. 00:29:00 – Emotional Availability Exploration of the difference between physical presence and emotional availability in a marriage. 00:32:00 – Navigating Different Experiences The challenges of reconnecting after church meetings and the importance of sharing spiritual experiences with one another. 00:35:00 – Handling Difficult Situations Jeanette shares a personal story about navigating sensitive situations while maintaining a strong marriage. 00:38:00 – Date Night and Connection The role of date nights in fostering connection and communication between spouses. 00:40:00 – Pure Motives in Communication The importance of having pure motives when discussing church matters and supporting each other. 00:43:00 – Seeking Help and Humility Encouragement for leaders to seek help when needed and to be humble about their struggles. 00:45:00 – Avoiding Judgment The need for spouses to refrain from forming judgments about others in the ward and the importance of compassion. Send us Fan MailYour body can hit full panic speeds while your brain has to make courtroom-clean decisions. That tension sits at the center of my conversation with Eric Robinson, a former pastor turned FBI agent who spent 24 years in the Bureau and served on SWAT. We get real about what it means to approach a door knowing you might meet violence, and why true calm is not bravado, it is competence built through training, repetition, and trust in your teammates.Eric walks us through a deadly force encounter that includes the grim reality of suicide by cop, the adrenaline surge that can slam your heart rate into the 170s, and the strange way time can feel stretched while everything happens fast. We talk about the “fog” that can follow, the mental replay that steals sleep, and why the what if loop feels so sticky even when the shoot is justified. If you work in policing, fire, EMS, dispatch, corrections, or any high-risk role, you'll recognize the mix of duty, humanity, and aftermath. We also dig into what actually supports first responder mental health after critical incidents: solid leadership, a smart after-action review, optional support that people can choose, and a team culture that stays close instead of ostracizing shooters out of legal fear. Along the way we hit the odd corners of FBI work, interagency cooperation, and the dark humor that helps people survive what the public never sees. Eric also shares his “why” and previews his memoir, Irreverend: From Saving Souls to Chasing Sinners in the FBI.If this conversation helps you, share it with someone on your shift, then subscribe and leave a review so more first responders can find it. How much of your life are you living for...someone else?In this episode of Magic Made, we're talking about the pressure to fit in, follow trends, please clients, and become the version of ourselves we think everyone else wants. We've both experienced seasons of shrinking ourselves, second-guessing our creativity, and worrying about what other people might think. But the more we tried to fit in, the further we drifted from the work we were actually meant to create. This conversation is about finding your authentic voice, trusting your style, letting go of comparison, and building the confidence to choose yourself again and again.✨ In this episode:Why people pleasing keeps creatives stuckThe danger of comparisonFinding your authentic styleWhy your dream clients want the real youHow affirmations quiet self-doubtBuilding confidence through actionChoosing yourself without guiltIf this episode resonates, tell us in the comments:

Text your thoughts and questions! We often think rest is something we earn after we've worked hard enough. We push through exhaustion, tell ourselves we'll slow down later, and believe that getting more done is the key to feeling better. But what if we've been thinking about rest all wrong? This week, in episode 323 of the Positively LivingⓇ Podcast, we're revisiting one of our most impactful conversations with Gary Ware, founder of Breakthrough Play, keynote speaker, certified coach, and bestselling author of Playful Rebellion. As part of our summer series on energy, stress, and nervous system regulation, this timely re-release explores why rest is essential—not as a reward for productivity, but as the foundation that makes sustainable productivity possible.Gary Ware is the founder of Breakthrough Play, a keynote speaker, certified coach, and the bestselling author of Playful Rebellion. Through applied improvisation, positive psychology, and the science of play, Gary helps individuals and organizations reduce stress, strengthen communication, spark creativity, and build more sustainable ways of working. His mission is to help people challenge the belief that productivity requires constant hustle and instead embrace play and rest as powerful tools for greater impact, innovation, and well-being.In this conversation, Gary introduces three distinct types of rest—macro, micro, and meso—and explains how each one helps reduce stress, restore creativity, and support your energy in different ways. He also shares why play isn't childish, why entrepreneurs often resist rest the most, and how small shifts can dramatically improve your focus, well-being, and impact.Key Takeaways:Rest isn't something you earn. It's something that allows you to do your best work.Chronic stress keeps your brain in fight, flight, or freeze mode, reducing creativity, empathy, and clear thinking.Better sleep isn't always about getting more hours. Improving the quality of your sleep can make a significant difference.A consistent wind-down routine helps your body transition into restorative sleep.Macro rest focuses on deep restoration through quality sleep and recovery.Micro rest consists of short five-minute breaks throughout the day that help reset your brain and restore energy between tasks.Scrolling social media or checking email isn't true rest. Choose activities that genuinely recharge you instead.Meso rest means intentionally stepping away from work for several hours, a day, or longer to pursue hobbies, family time, or activities that bring joy.Hobbies aren't a luxury—they help your brain make creative connections and improve problem-solving.Play looks different for everyone. The goal isn't to do what others find fun, but to discover what genuinely restores and energizes you.Sustainable productivity begins with honoring your energy, not constantly pushing through exhaustion.Rest isn't the opposite of productivity—it's what makes productivity sustainable. When you give yourself permission to rest before you're completely depleted, you create space for greater creativity, better decisions, stronger relationships, and more meaningful work. What would change if you stopped trying to earn your rest and started treating it as one of your greatest strengths?Thank you for listening! Today, we talk about self-care and neurodiverse marriage and family life with podcaster Christina Marie. Christina says about herself:Hey, I'm Christina—married 18 years to a neurodiverse man and mom of three neurodiverse kids. For years, I tried to fix our home environment, hoping to ease the sensory and communication challenges in my neurodiverse family. But no matter how much I read or how many Christian experts I listened to, nothing bridged the gap between meeting everyone else's needs and caring for myself. I was exhausted carrying so many responsibilities while my needs were unmet. My husband was frustrated with his limitations and didn't know what to do. My neurodiverse kids needed my help to navigate a world they didn't always understand, but their meltdowns and challenges were overwhelming and exhausting at times. My health began to decline as I focused on making our marriage and home life optimal for my spouse and kids to prevent the cycle of problems. I reached a breaking point when I realized that prioritizing my well-being wasn't selfish—it was essential. That's when I turned to simple planning solutions to create space for self-care. If you're a mom who always ends up last on your own list, this one's for you. Jamira Pollard breaks down why putting yourself first isn't selfish — it's the foundation that lets you show up for everyone else. This clip is full of practical, no-cost ways to practice self-care for mothers: reading for fun, borrowing free library audiobooks, taking five quiet minutes before the day gets away from you. We think that turning off our brain with alcohol at the end of the day is “me time” and it's the only way to get a break. This isn't self-care, it's called being depleted and trying to survive a life that drains you. Poor self-care is one of the most reliable predictors of relapse in people trying to get sober. It's important and in this episode I'm explaining what self-care is and 5 simple ways you can begin to prioritize self-care in your life. (3:45) He spent time with his best friend since childhood, and they ended up chatting about Jim's health. Jim is ready to make some changes. The obesity rate has been coming down from its all-time high. (19:00) These metrics were taken between 2024 and 2025. However, childhood obesity is 20%, but in the 1970s, it was 3 or 4%. But what is considered obese has been redefined. (24:00) Lowering the bar doesn't make things better. Also, the numbers were gathered by Gallup (people self-reporting), not from doctors. The introduction of GLP-1s is credited for these numbers, but that may not be accurate. (30:00) However, they still don't seem to be a long-term solution because people abuse GLP-1s. Sleep has more impact on weight gain than you may think. (40:30) Less sleep can cause more cravings, among other things. Holy crap, we spent money on this study? (48:00) Result: Smoking weed is bad for your health. Daily smoking of weed holds the same risk of lung cancer as daily smoking of cigarettes. It's not the substance; it's the inhaling of smoke.
