Welcome back to Barn Talk, where what happens at the barn doesn't always stay in the barn. Today's episode is a somber one, as Tork and Sawyer come together to reflect on the shocking assassination of Charlie Kirk in Utah. With heavy hearts, the hosts share their thoughts and prayers for Charlie's family and friends, acknowledging the deep impact of his loss on the country, especially among the younger generation. After a brief market update, Tork and Sawyer dive into a candid conversation about the repercussions of political violence, the dangerous state of public discourse, and the significance of free speech in America. They discuss Charlie Kirk's influence—as a thought leader who challenged the status quo and encouraged critical thinking among young people—and examine how his untimely death exposes deeper issues within our society. The hosts also touch on the reaction to Charlie's death, the dangers of losing healthy debate, and the importance of standing up for what you believe in, even in the face of adversity. Amidst all the turmoil, they find hope in the legacy that Charlie leaves behind: a reminder for all of us to build strong communities, seek truth, and never shy away from difficult conversations.Pour yourself a cup of coffee—or a glass of whiskey, as the guys do in honor of Charlie—and join us for this heartfelt and unfiltered episode of Barn Talk.Shop Farmer Grade

“Jim, Jack, Johnny Red, Johnny Black, and Jose; all my favorite men. You can have it any way you like it, as long as it's in a shot glass.” We watched “Coyote Ugly” with our friend Blake Knight, and we've got some choreography to learn. It was a lot of fun revisiting these gals jumping and jiving all over that bar, but we have to wonder about this business model. When we think about the amount of revenue those Coyotes are literally pouring down the drain, it makes our heads spin. Don't even get us started on the health and safety code violations! All that aside, we're really here for this cast, who all really deliver. Maria Bello, Piper Perabo, Bridget Moynahan, Izabella Milo, and The Original Tyra (Banks) all make us wish we were cool enough to be hired as Coyotes. Adam Garcia charms the pants off of us with that Aussie accent, and speaking of accents, Melanie Lynskey is really out here doing the Lord's accent work. We would be remiss if we left out LeAnn Rimes singing her Dianne Warren-penned hit “Can't Fight the Moonlight.” We also have a Diane Warren “Name That Mega Hit” quiz. With hindsight, it's easy to lament how badly they miscalculated the circumstances but living through the modern day and watching the Democratic Party struggle gives even more clarity to how that kind of inability to get organized in the face of existential threats to democracy can happen. President Trump is set to send the National Guard to Chicago to get their crime under control, ss they had over 70 shootings in a two week period. This is a proven strategy as it helped stop the crime in Washington, D.C.. Despite all of this, the Democratic Governor and mayor are trying to fight President Trump on this, just as if they don't want the crime to stop. It appears that Minneapolis is maybe on the list of future sities to have the National Guard sent in, as they had a spike in crime rate as of late. -Thank you for listening!-
Podcast favorite Dr. Amelia Kelley is back on the show! Today we're unpacking something I know will resonate with so many of you: our trauma responses. Fight, flight, freeze, or fawn… we all have them. But what if instead of shaming ourselves for these responses, we learned to use them for our benefit? Amelia and I get into what each response actually looks like day-to-day, why they happen so quickly in the body, and how to bring more consciousness when they show up. We also explore ways to reframe them so they can become tools that work in your favor: turning fight into advocacy, flight into creativity, freeze into stillness, and fawn into compassion and service. ✨ Podcast episodes are available in two formats - audio and video! If you'd like to watch the video version of this episode, you can find it here. In this episode, we explore the creation of the Central African Federation (1953–1963), Britain's attempt to bind together Southern Rhodesia, Northern Rhodesia, and Nyasaland into one semi-autonomous bloc. The federation was sold as a bold experiment in multiracial partnership and economic modernization, but in reality it served white settler interests while tightening imperial control.Drawing on Martin Thomas's Fight or Flight, we examine why London pursued this policy at a time when decolonization pressures were mounting, how African nationalist movements responded, and why the project ultimately collapsed within a decade. The federation's rise and fall offers a powerful lens into Britain's postwar dilemmas: the desire to maintain global influence, the fear of strategic retreat, and the contradictions of empire in an age of independence.Newsflash: You can find everything Explaining History on Substack, join free hereHelp the podcast to continue bringing you history each weekIf you enjoy the Explaining History podcast and its many years of content and would like to help the show continue, please consider supporting it in the following ways:If you want to go ad-free, you can take out a membership hereOrYou can support the podcast via Patreon here Hosted on Acast. Over the course of 28 years of marriage, Rebekah and Gabe Lyons have learned a lot—about not taking their own opinions and preferences too seriously; about the need to understand each other's pasts; and about the hidden gifts that even negative emotions can offer us. Having compiled many of those lessons into a new book titled The Fight for Us, Rebekah and Gabe talk with Nate Dewberry this week about those and many other marriage topics, including how to keep minor differences of opinion from snowballing into big fights—and what husbands can do when they hear the dreaded “I just don't think we're connecting” from their wives.Segments/chapters0:00 How Rebekah and Gabe met—and what they know now that they wish they'd known then5:27 What prompted them to write The Fight for Us9:13 Working on yourselves individually so that you're stronger as a couple17:47 Advice for husbands who've been told “We're just not connecting”22:07 What it means to “choose covenant over consumerism”26:29 The cultural “headwinds” against marriage, and how we can counteract them30:32 Closing thoughts: How community has aided Rebekah and Gabe's marriageVisit The Redeemed's website for downloadable discussion question sets, show notes, inspirational articles, more resources, or to share your testimony.Join our Exclusive Newsletter: Signup today and be the first to get notified on upcoming podcasts and new resources! The Redeemed is an organization giving men from all backgrounds a supportive, judgment-free environment, grounded in Christian love without demanding participation in any faith tradition, where they can open up about their challenges, worries, and failures—and celebrate their triumphs over those struggles. From the Spring of 2005, Michael's conversation with Kevin Flynn, co-author of "102 Minutes: The Untold Story of the Fight to Survive Inside the Twin Towers." This is the dramatic and moving account of the struggle for life inside the World Trade Center on the morning of September 11, when every minute counted At 8:46 am on September 11, 2001, 14,000 people were inside the twin towers-reading e-mails, making trades, eating croissants at Windows on the World. Over the next 102 minutes, each would become part of a drama for the ages, one witnessed only by the people who lived it-until now. Of the millions of words written about this wrenching day, most were told from the outside looking in. New York Times reporters Jim Dwyer and Kevin Flynn have taken the opposite-and far more revealing-approach. Reported from the perspectives of those inside the towers, 102 Minutes captures the little-known stories of ordinary people who took extraordinary steps to save themselves and others. Beyond this stirring panorama stands investigative reporting of the first rank. Original air date March 2005. The book was published in January 2005.

When you're in crisis, your nervous system isn't neutral—it's running survival programs. Fight, flight, freeze, repeat. And when you tell yourself “not now”, that's not laziness or failure—it's a protective pattern your body believes is keeping you safe. But here's the thing: survival mode isn't meant to be permanent. It quietly drains your energy, feeds old beliefs like “I can't do this,” and keeps you circling the same pain.In this episode of Dear Divorce Diary, we explore:✨ Why the nervous system convinces us to wait until things feel calmer before healing ✨ How beliefs like “not now” or “what if it doesn't work” keep you locked in survival loops ✨ The energetic cost of staying in crisis—and what shifts when you allow safety to be restored ✨ What happens in the very first month of our program that helps women feel grounded, resourced, and ready for lasting changeHealing isn't about pushing harder. It's about creating safety, updating beliefs, and letting your body remember how to release what it's been carrying.

Patti and Pottymouth will never forget “the screamable baseball game,” which you may know alternatively as the 30th anniversary of Cal Ripken, Jr. breaking Lou Gehrig's record for consecutive games, Yamamoto's nearly no-no, or the craziest comeback in the history of the Orioles. We celebrated the importance of showing up every day no matter the challenges. We celebrated a friend to labor, a dad who started the biggest day of his professional life by taking his daughter to her first day of school, and the ballplayer who understood that connecting with fans may be the most important part of the job. We also chanted “Eddie! Eddie!” with cans of Steady Eddie in our hands. We then watched Yoshinobou Yamamoto pitch the game of his life, and that legacy kid Jackson Holliday break it up with a big swing and a smile.Other baseball things happened too – we ponder what life is like this week for the Phillies fan who berated another Phillies fan at loanDepot Park until he gave up the Harrison Bader home run ball he had retrieved and given to his birthday boy son. DBacks pitching comes back for Pottymouth but is it too little, too late? And the Butler did it. As we do like to lean into a theme, the Serie del Tequila played right into our shot glass clutching hands. Charros del Jalisco may find a home in our NCiB hearts as we learn that both tequila and mariachi come from Jalisco. We say, “my boyfriend is not the perpetrator," “I was yelling, it's not a symptom,” and “Ergo, Tequila.” Fight the man, send your game balls to Meredith, get boosted, and find us on Bluesky @ncibpodcast, on Facebook @nocryinginbball, Instagram @nocryinginbball and on the Interweb at nocryinginbball.com. What if your life changed in a single heartbeat? In this episode of the Rollercoaster Podcast, I sit down with Brigham and Lauren Richardson to unpack one of the most powerful survival stories I've ever heard. A weekend dirt bike trip turned into a nightmare when Brigham lost control, fell 75 feet off a cliff in Moab, and nearly lost his life. What followed was a blur of surgeries, internal bleeding, shattered bones, depression, and the painful fight to survive and then, to walk again. But this episode isn't just about trauma. It's about marriage, faith, mental health, and resilience. Lauren shares what it was like receiving that phone call, navigating the unknown, and becoming Brigham's anchor through months of recovery and setbacks.Brigham opens up about waking up in the ICU unable to speak, feeling hopeless, and battling suicidal thoughts, all while learning to eat, talk, and move again from scratch. The fact that he's here today, walking and healing, is nothing short of a miracle.

We all have a primary pattern of dealing with relational conflict. There are a scant few, in my experience, who do it with health and peace. The rest tend to fall into what psychologists have labeled, Fight, Flight, or Freeze tendencies. I'm not a fighter, and viewed myself as generally freezing in the moment of conflict, masked by thinking I was just being cool and calm, waiting for it to just end so I could take flight and remove myself. I thought I was valiant for my lack of fighting. Righteous and unshakable. And I thought I was protecting everyone, myself included. I did whatever it took to, choose your word: appease, placate, tolerate, or put up with. What I realize now is I was just being dishonest to myself and everyone, and while I thought I was being strong, I now view it as being incredibly weak. Again, dishonest. And what was really happening is I grew bitter and was slowly building walls with each brick of appeasing. The new term for this and what I now relate to, is Fawning. And this is the podcast today. I sat down with Dr. Ingrid Clayton who is a licensed clinical psychologist with a master's in transpersonal psychology and a Ph.D. in clinical psychology. She's had a thriving private practice for more than sixteen years and is a regular contributor to Psychology Today, where her blog “Emotional Sobriety” has had more than a million views. She has now come out with the first ever, commercial book on this concept of fawning, it's titled, FAWNING: Why the Need to Please Makes Us Lose Ourselves—and How to Find our Way Back. Fawning is a hallmark of codependency, and often occurs when we can't fight or flee because we have to remain in relationship with the person or situation we are struggling with. It is highly relevant to why we stay in bad jobs, fall into unhealthy partnerships, and tolerate dysfunctional environments, even when it seems obvious to others we should go or take drastic steps to try and correct things. Ingrid says fawning can serve a purpose as an emergency adaptive strategy that protects us from losing connection with people we depend on, but it becomes a real problem when it turns from the emergency coping mechanism to compulsory in our day to day lives. The good news of course is we can break the pattern of chronic fawning once we see the trauma response for what it is. I was incredibly excited to talk with Ingrid and this conversation proved invaluable for me. I hope it will be for you as well, as my feeling is that most of us suffer from aspects of fawning in certain relationships and circumstances in our lives. Connect with Ingrid on IG @ingridclaytonphd and find the new book Fawning that is hitting bookstores now. Coming up next, my conversation with Dr Ingrid Clayton on the pervasiveness of Fawning and how to get out of this insidious trauma response.
