“Send Coach John a message”I found a fabulous post from Vala Afshar (@ValaAfshar) that reminds me to keep trying to be my best! These things that he's talking about are simple game changers for anyone who is looking to keep improving. Check this message out:  “Be humble and kind. You could be wrong. Be forgiving. You also make mistakes. Be honest. Character is a door opener. Be generous. Givers sleep better at night. Be grateful. Luck seeks the thankful. Be courageous. Fight for your happiness. Be yourself, always. You will be happier.”  Who doesn't want to be genuinely more happy? Happiness is fleeting most of the time. Joy is more permanent. But following these guidelines sure does help. I had a wonderful conversation with a waitress yesterday. She had just turned 30 and she has 3 kids. Her attitude around the entire restaurant was amazing!! I watched as she really took the time to talk to and listen with an older man that I could tell was a regular and how his face lit up with a huge smile for the connection she was showing to him. I made sure to thank her for being a positive example for all of us to learn from. I also mentioned that I recently turned 60 and that I remember how much better life got after 30 - she said she's seeing it already! These things that Vala is sharing - are part of not putting up with negative things… and she mentioned that is what she's doing more of. In Week Two of our Jesus Is King series, Pastor Dustin unpacks a powerful message titled “The Truth About Temptation.” We begin where we left off last week — at the baptism of Jesus. In Matthew 3:17, the Father declares, “This is My beloved Son…” Before Jesus performed miracles or preached to crowds, His identity was affirmed. But immediately after that moment of public declaration, Matthew 4:1 tells us that Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness. Identity is often declared in public, but it is proven in private. In the wilderness, the enemy did not begin by attacking Jesus' strength. He attacked His identity. In Matthew 4:3, Satan says, “If you are the Son of God…” If the enemy can shake your identity, he can shape your behavior. Temptation often starts with questioning who you are and whose you are. Pastor Dustin reminds us that desire itself is real, but it does not define you. After forty days of fasting, Matthew 4:2 says Jesus was hungry. The desire was legitimate. Yet Hebrews 4:15 tells us He was tempted in every way, just as we are, and yet without sin. Desire makes a great servant but a terrible master. The battle of temptation is ultimately decided by the voice you believe. Jesus shows us how to defeat temptation: Fight from identity, not for it. Romans 8:1 declares there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. When you are trying to earn God's love, temptation will always feel stronger than you. But when you stand secure in who you are in Christ, you fight from victory, not for it. Prepare before the battle. Psalm 119:11 says, “Your word I have treasured and stored in my heart, that I may not sin against You.” Jesus did not prepare in the wilderness. He prepared before it. You do not rise to the occasion; you fall to the level of your formation. Name the lie. In John 8:44, Jesus calls Satan the father of lies. When you can identify the lie, you can break its power over your life. Choose obedience over relief. In the wilderness, bread represented immediate relief, but obedience produced lasting freedom. Galatians 5:1 reminds us that Christ has set us free. Freedom comes not from satisfying every desire, but from trusting God in the middle of it. And here is the hope: Hebrews 2:18 tells us that because Jesus suffered when He was tempted, He is able to help those who are being tempted. He shared in our humanity, broke the power of the enemy, and freed us from slavery to fear. And 1 John 2:1 reminds us that even when we fall, we have an advocate with the Father — Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. Temptation is real. The battle is intense. But Jesus is King — even in the wilderness.

"72% of Americans say they hate big corporations—including Republicans." — Charles DerberIt's not just the right that's reacting against liberal democracy. Some progressives are also embracing populism. Charles Derber, longtime professor of sociology at Boston College, has a new book called Fighting Oligarchy: How Positive Populism Can Reclaim America. Rather than a dirty word, he argues, populism is an inevitable political response to the brutality of today's economy. We're in a disguised depression, he fears. Sixty percent of Americans say they feel one paycheck away from oblivion.72% of Americans say they hate big corporations, Derber reminds us. Not just Democrats—Republicans too. Such hostility to large capitalist enterprises thus represents a kind of political supermajority. And Derber, a man of the left, sees this as fertile ground for what he calls positive populism. It's a politics that connects economic grievance to democratic renewal, the way the 1890s Populists did, the way the New Deal did, the way Martin Luther King did when he insisted you couldn't fight for civil rights without fighting against war and capitalism.But can positive populism coexist with American capitalism? Derber says no. American capitalism is too oligarchic, too individualistic, too hostile to collective identity. It's not compatible with positive populism and thus, in Derber's mind at least, not compatible with survival. But that doesn't involve a Soviet-style elimination of the free market. It means something more like Northern European social democracy: strong unions, universal healthcare, a government that actually intervenes on behalf of ordinary people.The trap, Derber warns, is nostalgia for the pre-Trump era. Going back to the supposedly "consensus" years of Bush, Obama and Clinton is a circuitous way of getting to another Trump. Today's street demonstrators—from Minneapolis to Los Angeles to New York City—understand this. According to Derber, demonstrations against ICE and MAGA are associating the immigration crackdowns with corporate oligarchy, and authoritarian political power with the economic power of big capitalism.And so positive populism will prevail. We see them in the text and our eyes sort of glaze and we keep moving. Og, king of Bashan, is one of those names. But here's the thing, nothing in Scripture is filler. The Holy Spirit doesn't waste words.So let me tell you about Og.He was a giant. The Bible tells us his iron bed was nine cubits long, that's somewhere around thirteen or fourteen feet. Scripture actually stops to describe the man's bed. Now why would God put that in there? I believe it's because Og represented something massive, something ancient, something that looked absolutely undefeatable to the people standing in front of him.He ruled over sixty fortified cities with high walls and iron gates, and he stood between Israel and the land God had promised them. That's a lot of intimidation packed into one king.But here's where the story gets good. The text says simply, "So the LORD our God also delivered into our hands Og king of Bashan." It doesn't say Israel outfought him or outwitted him. It says God delivered him. The giant fell because God had already decided the outcome.And then watch what happened next. The territory of that giant, those sixty fortified cities, became Israel's inheritance. The land of intimidation became the land of promise.I'm too soon old and too late smart, but I've lived long enough to know that most of us are facing our own version of Og right now. Maybe it's a financial situation that looks like an iron bed, too big to move. Maybe it's a health report. Maybe it's a spiritual battle that feels entrenched and permanent. Something towering over you that seems like it will never fall.Can I remind you tonight that the giants of your life are remnants? Loud, yes. Intimidating, absolutely. But remnants of a dying opposition to the purposes of God. And our God still delivers giants into the hands of His people.Don't measure the promise by the size of the opposition. Measure the opposition by the size of your God.Let's pray: Father, tonight we look at things that feel too big, too fortified, too entrenched. And we choose to remember Og. You delivered him. You turned his territory into testimony. Do it again, Lord, in our lives. Fight for us, as only You can. Today I have the immense pleasure of talking with Carissa Véliz, an associate professor at the University of Oxford, about her new book, Prophecy: Prediction, Power, and the Fight for the Future—from Ancient Oracles to AI.  Linking this work to her previous book, Privacy is Power: Why and How You Should Take Back Control of Your Data, Véliz writes: “ surveillance and prediction are digital technology's original sins.”In our wide-ranging discussion, we talk about how both massive and intrusive invasions of privacy at all levels of society and false claims to be able to predict the future erode democracy, are corrosive to ethics, and undermine people's ability to think for themselves.  Instead, we are conditioned to trust an unregulated band of “effective altruists” who claim to know better than we what kinds of lives we should prefer and the choices we should make.  Véliz argues instead that we should embrace the uncertain to build resilience, to prepare for contingency but not be determined by what we cannot see, and to foster curiosity and imagination.Carissa Véliz is an Associate Professor in Philosophy at the Institute for Ethics in AI, and a Fellow at Hertford College at the University of Oxford. She is the recipient of the 2021 Herbert A. Simon Award for Outstanding Research in Computing and Philosophy. She is a member of UNESCO's Women 4 Ethical AI. She advises companies and policymakers around the world on privacy and the ethics of AI. She is a board member of the Proton Foundation, along with Sir Tim Berners-Lee and Proton's CEO Andy Yen. She is the author of the highly-acclaimed Privacy Is Power (an Economist book of the year, 2020) and the editor of the Oxford Handbook of Digital Ethics.
