Robert Rodriguez went from enforcing prison rules… to running the prison from the inside. After serving in the military, Robert became a correctional officer in Georgia — stepping into what he describes as one of the most corrupt prison systems in America. As a young officer, he quickly got swept into a brutal culture of violence, cover-ups, and unchecked power. He participated in beatings, witnessed extreme abuse, and says officers were rewarded for silence. Promoted to sergeant, Robert was rising through the system — until one tragic night. A fatal drunk driving accident led to a 14-year prison sentence… and everything flipped. The former sergeant entered the very world he once controlled — now wearing shackles instead of a badge. Inside, Robert didn't just survive — he became a high-ranking gang member, involved in smuggling contraband, controlling prison politics, and even having illicit relationships with staff. He eventually helped run operations behind bars. #PrisonStories #TrueCrimePodcast #DirtyCop #CorrectionalOfficer #WentToPrison #LawEnforcementTruth #RedemptionStory #LockedInPodcast Thank you to BLUECHEW & GLD for sponsoring this episode: BlueChew: Visit https://bluechew.com/ and use promo code LOCKEDIN at checkout to get your first month of BlueChew & pay five bucks for shipping. #171: An Epic Road Trip Along California's Highway 395 The 150-mile stretch of Highway 395 from Bridgeport to Lone Pine takes travelers through a landscape of wide valleys, alpine lakes, volcanic wonders, and Old West history. Running along the eastern edge of California's Sierra Nevada Mountains, this is one of the most scenic drives in the West. On our recent trip, we revisited some of our favorite places along the route, including towns and landmarks that feel like the land that time forgot. From the ghost town of Bodie to the alpine beauty of June Lake and the resort town of Mammoth Lakes, every stop had a story to tell. We explored hot springs, ancient forests, and film locations that have been featured in hundreds of Hollywood movies. In this episode, we share the highlights of this unforgettable road trip, including: · The eerie allure of Bodie Ghost Town, frozen in time, · Where to find the best fish tacos on the planet (hint: inside a gas station), · The alpine lakes, fall colors, and mountain views that make the June Lake Loop so special, · Hidden gems like Hot Creek and Convict Lake, · The Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest, home to trees nearly 5,000 years old, · The sobering history of Manzanar National Historic Site, · And our favorite way to end the trip – eating a pancake the size of a hubcap at Whitney Portal beneath the tallest peak in the lower 48. If you love mountain scenery, quirky small towns, and fascinating history, Highway 395 is one of America's great drives. And one that every traveler should experience at least once. ----- Special Note: Join us on a festive European Christmas Markets trip in December 2026 (Germany and Austria). In this powerful and funny episode of The Black Country Blokes, Kev and Lee sit down with their long-time mate Adrian (“Aid”), who's gearing up to run the New York Marathon to raise money for The Black Country Blokes C.I.C. and support men's mental health. What starts as a catch-up between three dads turns into an honest chat about fatherhood, guilt, burnout, running as therapy, and the fine line between bravery and breakdown. Aid shares how discipline beats motivation, why bad runs can be as valuable as good ones, and the moment he got so fed up he even told a rainbow to f*** off — then kept going.
Paul Thomas Anderson's One Battle After Another has been the talk of the town since its wide release last month—from critics to filmmakers to audiences, the reception has been nothing short of euphoric. Loosely inspired by Thomas Pynchon's novel Vineland, the film opens in an unspecified present, detailing the activities of a militant group led by a Black revolutionary (played by Teyana Taylor). Years after her disappearance, her partner (Leonardo DiCaprio) and their daughter (newcomer Chase Infiniti) are hunted down by an old enemy, Sean Penn's Colonel Steven J. Lockjaw. The chase takes them across California, with an assortment of other characters becoming embroiled along the way. The movie is an unabashedly fun, feel-good action flick—one that also calls back to films as disparate as The Searchers, Commando, and Running on Empty. But is it among the greatest of the decade, as some have claimed? Film Comment Editors Clinton Krute and Devika Girish invited critics and programmers Miriam Bale and Adam Piron on the Podcast to discuss the film's successes and failures, how it fits into PTA's larger body of work, and its engagement with American history and the present. If there's one thing the four agreed on, it's that One Battle After Another is indeed a “very rich text.”
So apparently Steve Bannon announced in an interview that Donald Trump will run for a third term. Because, you know, why start following the Constitution now? We'll break down this latest descent into delusion, and Trump's childlike meltdown over Canada's anti-tariff ad. (Yes, he's mad at Canada again. Cue the tiny violins.) Joining Don tonight is comedian Jay Jurden, who's bringing the laughs as we try to make sense of the nonsense. Because sometimes the only way to deal with this circus is to laugh at it.
On this episode of Trending in Education, Mike Palmer welcomes author Scott R. Levy to discuss his new book, Why School Boards Matter: Reclaiming the Heart of American Education and Democracy. Scott shares his journey from Wall Street to serving on his local school board in 2015, driven by the unintended negative consequences he observed from federal programs like Race to the Top. We dive into how school boards transitioned from being a "quiet part" of civic society to a focal point of public consciousness during the COVID years and following George Floyd, dealing with intense issues from school reopening to DEI and curriculum. Scott draws parallels between corporate and educational governance, noting that while corporate boards are studied and considered central to organizational success, school boards have historically been overlooked or even suggested for abolition despite their vital role. Scott argues that school boards are the true front lines of democracy, operating with a level of public engagement and accountability—through open meetings and public comment periods—that other levels of government often lack. We explore the political dynamic of power shifting away from local school boards to state and federal governments across both red and blue states, leading to a loss of the crucial local control element. Scott advocates for a balanced approach, emphasizing that local control allows for the necessary nuance to address unique community issues, foster civil discourse, and serve as a buffer against potentially authoritarian or ill-fitting laws from above. We wrap up by outlining ways to strengthen school boards, stressing the importance of high voter turnout in local elections and the need for members to adopt a thoughtful governance partner role—avoiding both micromanagement and being a "rubber stamp" for the administration. Key Takeaways: School Boards as the Democratic Core: School boards are a unique and essential layer of American democracy, operating in the open with mandated public comment, which forces direct engagement and local accountability unlike other governing bodies. The Power of Local Control: Despite a uniform, bipartisan trend to shift power to the state level, local control is necessary for districts to tailor solutions to their unique challenges (like academic outcomes, mental health, or absenteeism) and for "island districts" (e.g., Austin, Texas, or conservative towns in liberal states) to manifest their values. Essential School Board Member Skills: Effective board members must take a big picture view, act as a thoughtful governance partner for the district (not a micromanager or a rubber stamp), and, crucially, listen carefully to their constituents before making decisions for the overall community. If you've ever felt disconnected from national or state politics, this conversation offers a powerful reminder that your voice matters most at the local level. We present a strong, affirmative case for the importance of school boards, an often-overlooked institution that shapes the education of over 50 million students and serves as a vital model for civil discourse in our fractured society. Tune in to understand why engaging in school board elections and meetings is a direct way to strengthen public education and make our democracy healthier. Like what you heard? "I'd rather suck at running and have my life back," Erin McDonald, who just won the 2025 Detroit Free Press International Half Marathon in 1:16. She objectively does not suck at running, but she does have her life back! Erin McDonald recently opened up about her struggles with restrictive and rigid eating in college as a runner at Michigan State University. She was primed and favored to make nationals her senior year—staying "disiplined" with her food, rest, and training routine—but the race went totally awry. With a job lined up after graduation, she was ready for a long break from running. Four years, in fact. When she came back to the sport, she had gained weight from fueling adequately and listening to her body, as well as taking care of her mental health. She was curious about the marathon, and was about to find out, she was pretty good at it! But as she shares in this episode, her motivation for recovering from restrictive eating and chronic injuries had nothing to do with fast times. She just wanted her life back, and in this case, the rest came together. Follow Erin on Instagram to cheer her on as she tackles another marathon this year, @sunkistErin. In this episode of Pushing the Limits, Lisa Tamati sits down with Brandon Bucher, the visionary CEO of Lightning Pay NZ, a company pioneering Bitcoin payment infrastructure and merchant solutions in New Zealand. Brandon shares his personal Bitcoin journey, what drew him into the ecosystem, and why he's deeply passionate about financial freedom, self-sovereignty, and decentralized money. Together, we unpack the macro forces shaping our economic landscape — from inflation and debt-driven systems to currency debasement and money printing — and why Bitcoin represents a viable alternative. Welcome to the Purple Patch Podcast! On the episode IRONMAN Master Coach Matt Dixon welcomes guest and Purple Patch Athlete Marina Gelman. In 2000, at the age of 40, Marina Gelman lost her college-aged daughter in a tragic car accident. At the time, Gelman was a new fitness enthusiast and avid runner. Overcome by grief after the accident, however, she holed herself up for almost two years and focused only on work to numb the pain. Unfortunately, during this time, she abandoned her fitness goals, started smoking again after a long hiatus, and put on weight; reaching over 200 pounds. Ironically, it was another tragedy a short time later, the death of her Father from a heart attack, that inspired her to start training again. As it turns out, training non-stop turned out to be a blessing and a curse. Yes, she lost weight and found relief from her stress and heartache, but she was also overtraining…severely. Marina eventually succumbed to the devastating effects of chronic fatigue. Even the simple act of walking up a flight of stairs became unbearable. In 2012, after hearing about Matt Dixon and Purple Patch from her running club, she reached out. At the time, she was 240 pounds, her heaviest. She explained to Matt that she had only two small goals: Recover from her chronic fatigue Run three miles again. That's it. Matt set her sights higher. Not only did he give her hope, but he also gave her a long-term structured plan and a wonderful community of support. Today, Marina Gelman is a Half-Ironman finisher, with her hopes set on finishing a full Ironman in the near future. She has also lost 105 pounds and trains daily, fully recovered from chronic fatigue. This is a story of hope and promise. Adopting an athletic mindset, regardless of where you find yourself, just may be the one spark to save your life. “Losing a child is something unimaginable to go through,” says Marina. “Sport, in a way, and running saved me from sadness for the rest of my life.” If you have any questions about the Purple Patch program, feel free to reach out at info@purplepatchfitness.com Purple Patch and Episode Resources Check out our world-class coaching and training options: Book a complementary needs assessment coaching call: https://calendly.com/coaches-purplepatch/offseason-assessment-call Tri Squad: https://www.purplepatchfitness.com/squad 1:1 Coaching: https://www.purplepatchfitness.com/11-coached Run Squad: https://www.purplepatchfitness/com/run-squad Strength Squad: https://www.purplepatchfitness.com/strength-1 Live & On-Demand Bike Sessions: https://www.purplepatchfitness.com/bike Explore our training options in detail: https://bit.ly/3XBo1Pi Live in San Francisco? If You Know Your Purpose But Can't Act October 22, 2025 | Episode 5208 Host: Scott Smith Episode Description You already know your purpose. You just haven't admitted it yet. Scott's betting all your friends know exactly what you're passionate about too. They're just waiting for you to finally go do it. But what if you know your purpose and still can't get yourself to take action? That's a different problem with a different solution. Plus, Scott's 93-year-old mom might make a podcast appearance. You'll see where he comes from if you hear his mom. He promises you that. Featured Story Scott's mom is almost 94 and coming to visit from his sister's place up north. On the phone, she asked if she could watch him record his podcast. "I can't believe you're still doing that. I've never seen you record it." Maybe she'll make an appearance. Maybe she won't. That's her right at 93 years old to do whatever the hell she wants to do. But here's the thing about purpose that connects to this story. Scott's been doing this podcast for almost 20 years now. He coined a phrase two decades ago that still holds up: if you don't know your purpose, your purpose is to find your purpose. Simple thinking. Disc jockey logic from years of pizza and free t-shirts. The twist? Most people already found their purpose. They're just too scared to admit it and go after it. Important Points Passion comes from you experiencing life and finding what fires you up—it's not out there waiting or assigned to you at birth. Most procrastination happens because you got yourself into something you shouldn't be doing or you're just busy with minute-by-minute life distractions. If something's in your mind, it's real and it's all about you—stop asking the internet if other people think like this for confirmation. Memorable Quotes "If you don't know your purpose, your purpose is to find your purpose." "I'm betting you already have found it. You just haven't admitted it yet." "Running faster will only distract you from your purpose even further." Scott's Three-Step Approach Slow down and get real about what you actually want—become aware of what's working and what's not instead of running faster. Forget the limitations floating around in your mind because they're just beliefs stopping you, and toss out the fear of consequences. Accept where you are today with your peaceful base, then put one foot in front of the other pointing toward your dreams—it doesn't have to take forever. Detroit Lions Podcast: A Defensive Statement and a Well-Timed Bye The Detroit Lions delivered one of their most complete performances of the season on Monday night, beating the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 24-9 to improve to 5-2. In this week's episode of The Gray Area, the focus is on how this team, led by Dan Campbell, continues to evolve. The conversation explores the resurgence of the Lions defense, Jared Goff's continued efficiency, and how coordinator Kelvin Shepherd and defensive tackle Alim McNeil helped shut down Baker Mayfield and a capable Buccaneers offense. The show also dives into officiating trends across the NFL, offensive inconsistency, and what this bye week means for a team that's banged up but on the rise. Defense Defines the Night For the first time this year, the Lions won a game with their defense, and they did it with a lineup that was barely recognizable. Kelvin Shepherd orchestrated a masterclass with a patchwork secondary — a “Legion of Whom” featuring players like Nick Whiteside, Rocky Ya-Sin, and Arthur Maulet — all of whom contributed to one of the season's most dominant defensive showings. The Buccaneers were held to their lowest scoring output since September 2024, with just nine points and under 250 total yards. The turning point came up front. Alim McNeil, returning from injury, was a wrecking ball in the interior, collapsing the pocket and forcing Mayfield to rush decisions. His presence completely changed the dynamic of the defensive front, freeing up Aidan Hutchinson and the edge rushers to play looser. The hosts praise Shepherd for trusting his depth and his players' preparation, noting that the defensive cohesion and communication looked better than at any point this season. The win also adds weight to the ongoing officiating conversation. After a string of questionable calls in Kansas City, the Lions were finally on the favorable side of the whistle, with a soft push-off penalty on Jared Goff's would-be interception erased by contact downfield. The episode discusses how the team managed to keep composure, even as fans remain skeptical of how officiating has shaped games across the NFL this season. Goff's Efficiency and the Offense's Next Step Offensively, Jared Goff continued his efficient rhythm, completing 72 percent of his passes despite constant pressure from Todd Bowles' blitz-heavy scheme. The Lions didn't produce gaudy numbers, but they were opportunistic. Baker Mayfield couldn't replicate the magic that had fueled Tampa Bay's early-season run, thanks in large part to Detroit's defensive containment and red-zone execution. The podcast also highlights the need for the offense to rediscover its balance coming out of the bye week. Running back Jahmyr Gibbs broke off an explosive 78-yard touchdown, but outside of that, Detroit managed just 2.7 yards per carry. The hosts stress that the run game must be more consistent, particularly as the schedule toughens in November. The bye week arrives at a perfect time. Key players like Brian Branch, Kirby Joseph, and Terrion Arnold are expected to return soon, giving the Lions their full arsenal for the first time since Week 2. As the hosts conclude, the Detroit Lions look every bit like a contender — deep, resilient, and battle-tested — and with Shepherd's defense rounding into form, they're built to stay that way when the season gets serious. https://youtu.be/ltI9NM_qi6U Get yourself a Classic Detroit t-shirt here!
