After 6 months of hard work and one year and four months of interviewing some of the most successful people in the Latino community. My dream of someday writing a book about how Latinos & Latinas turn their dreams into reality is now itself a reality. Today 8/9/15 my book Logra Tu Dream: How 50 Successful Latinos & Latinas Turned Their Dreams Into Reality has launched on Amazon !! In this episode I will give you an overview of the book (in Spanish) and let you know how you can get it: What do Latinos who achieved exceptional success have in common? Is there a certain mindset and a set of principles that helped them achieve their dreams? If so, can they be summarized and replicated? This is the question stated by Arturo Nava in "Logra Tu Dream", a book that explores the principles behind 50 success stories of self-made Hispanic leaders. From White House officials to tech innovators to millionaire entrepreneurs, these men and women show that it takes blood, sweat, tears -and ganas!- to overcome the odds and achieve the American Dream. But achieving the American Dream has become increasingly difficult for many Latinos despite the huge opportunities because there is a lack of mentorship and inspiration from Latino role models...but it doesn't have to be that way. This book will show you how 50 of the most successful Latinos and Latinas in America turned their dreams into reality. These inspirational people share their stories providing us insight into the mindset, actions and habits that allowed them to overcome barriers and conquer fears, to achieve what they once thought impossible. After reading this book you will know that your dream is possible if you learn and put into action the proven principles you will discover here which will: * Show you that "si se puede" ( it is possible) * Teach you how to adopt the mindset of success * Inspire you to dream big * Show why YOU are the most important asset you need to invest in * Prove to you why you need to be grateful, give and surround yourself with the right people to be successful. * Inspire you to get mentored and take massive action As says Robert Renteria says "If your dream is big enough the odds don't matter". Gaby Natale the president of Super Latina TV who wrote the forward for this book puts it perfectly: "Logra Tu Dream" reminds us that it is vital for our community to keep embracing a Si Se Puede attitude and to develop our full potential both individually and collectively. My goal is to reach as many people as possible with this book by making it an Amazon bestseller. With you help I believe we can ! Si se puede !! During the course of her service work in the nonprofit sector, Claudia Espinosa became more aware of the inequalities that marginalized populations, such as immigrants and women, faced every day in the United States and around the world. Her dedication to serve can be demonstrated through her work at the Latina Institute, Communilife, Big Brothers Big Sisters of NYC, and UN Women. Her work with the Latina Institute and her vocation with Latina adolescents, helped her understand the disadvantages that her community experiences everyday and gave her the opportunity to create changes that can help Latino families live more positive lives. In 2012, Ms. Espinosa founded the L.O.V.E. Mentoring Program, inspired by her experience working for a suicide prevention program where she counseled Latina adolescents with depression and suicidal ideations. After witnessing first-hand the overwhelming difficulties that inflict young Latinas, she was prompted to further investigate the particular challenges within the Latina community. Upon discovering the many studies that reveal staggering discrepancies between the rates of suicide, teen pregnancy, and high school dropouts for young Latinas and their peers, Ms. Espinosa recognized a clear and distinct need for the development of enhanced support systems—such as those that may be provided through building a close relationship with a positive role model. Ms. Espinosa currently serves as the Executive Director of the L.O.V.E. Mentoring Program. In 2010, she received her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Forensic Psychology with Magna Cum Laude honors from CUNY. In May 2013, she received her second Master’s degree in Public Administration from the Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service at NYU. She also completed the Professional Development Program, Managing Yourself and Leading Others, from the Harvard Division of Continuing Education in August of 2013. As a self-made professional Latina, she wants to show young Latinas that with determination, passion, and faith in ourselves, anything is possible. What you'll learn The biggest issues Latinas face in the US What inspired Claudia to start the LOVE mentoring program Why the highest rate of suicide attempts in NYC is among Latinas Claudia's dream and her journey The huge importance of exposing young Latinas to mentors that show them that success is possible. I'll introduce Cristian with his letter to Crowdisimo: I am Cristian Arcega, I want to be an Electrical Engineer. I was born in Mexicali, Mexico and moved to Phoenix at the age of six. Despite deficiency in English I learned well and have performed at the top of my class consistently.Years later I found a place to put my talents to action. In high school I joined the Falcon Robotics Team. We Focused on STEM competitions to challenge ourselves. One year we entered an Underwater Robot Competition where we would be tasked to complete a series of tasks underwater with a robot of our creation. This competition was unlike anything any of us had ever attempted so we entered the University Class of the competition. Even though it was our first time building an aquatic robot and with a budget a percentage of everyone else’s we had a dream. Regardless of the low expectations of our team, our robot and ourselves we went for it. In spite of our minimal budget and competing against the likes of MIT among others we won. We've leveraged that victory to inspire ourselves, our community and youth to create a system where everyone who can dream big believes themselves capable of great things. They believe in their futures, that they can be the best. This story of success has been retold numerous times; by Wired Magazine in La Vida Robot, by Mary Mazzio in the documentary Underwater Dreams, the book by Josh Davis Spare Parts and most recently by Lionsgate and Pantelion FilmsSpare Parts. Unfortunately life doesn't always unfold the way we want. Due to being undocumented, a year into my engineering degree my scholarship was revoked due to immigration legislation in Arizona. I was also no longer considered an in-state student and my tuition tripled. I have struggled to remain in school since. Ten years later I have not had the funds to attend college full time and complete my dream to become an Electrical Engineer. My goal remains as always to get an Engineering Degree and start my own consumer electronics company. I hope to one day use my successes to uplift my community. I have recently started a crowd source campaign through CollegeDream.help to help raise funds to go to college. I hope that you will help me achieve my dream in the best way you can. Thank you. What you'll learn Cristian's dream to become an engineer and make robots Cristian's family story emmigrating from Mexico and then living on a trailer park once in the US How Cristian a Latino high school student and his team won the robotics competition vs MIT which inspired the Spare Parts movie with George Lopez The incredible hacks that Cristian and his team came up with to build the underwater robot with little to no budget and tons of Latino ingenuity The immigrant edge that Cristian'and his team had over the MIT kids that enabled them to come up with better more creative ideas The importance of preparation to win Cristian's keys to success: wanting it more than any other team, putting in the extra time and effort, perseverence, the ability to come back from failure and investing for the future Why Cristian's scholarship was revoked and why he has not been unable to graduate from college for 10 years Christian's crowdfunding campaign on Crowdisimo to fund his education and how you can help Resources & Links Crowdismo Project www.CollegeDream.help La Vida Robot Magazine Article http://archive.wired.com/wired/archive/13.04/robot.html Underwater Dreams Documentary http://www.underwaterdreamsfilm.com/ Spare Parts Book https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/20518979 Spare Parts Movie http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3233418/ Thank you so much for your support and for listening in ! Hipatia Lopez was born and raised in New Jersey. My parents are from Quito, Ecuador. She graduated from William Paterson University with a bachelor’s degree in Accounting and worked in public accounting for 6 years. Currently, She has 2 Part-time jobs and started her own company called H.L. Unico LLC. She opened up her business because she invented a kitchen utensil called “Empanada Fork” which is a pastry press used to make fork like impressions on dough. Her husband Henry is Dominican and is the cook in her family, she has3 children. Hipatia had an idea during the Thanksgiving holiday season of 2010 while her family and her were preparing the holiday menu. They were making 100 empanadas and naturally she was the “closer” which she did not like because it took forever and her hand started to hurt. She stopped and thought, “I wonder if there is a utensil I can use to close them?” So she started to do some research and had the idea on her mind all the time. When she told her family what she wanted to do – they said “Go for it!” so Hipatia started to contact lawyers and realized she was on a road to something great. This journey which started off with an idea that seemed crazy at first has helped Hipatia grow as an individual. Hipatia realizes now that it is okay to take chances in life. She hopes to make her utensil known to others and tell the WORLD it exists: "Empanada Fork" What you'll learn The barriers she overcame to become the 5th top student in her High School class How she achieved a full scholarship that allowed her to go to college through great grades and hustle The lesson she learned of having to put in your time Her American Dream to open a business Her journey from accountant to entrepreneur The struggle she went through to convince herself to go forward and start Empanada Fork How she learned her way to get a patent of Empanada Fork, get customer feedback Her first huge failure that almost caused her to give up How the inventor contest she won gave her media attention and the momentum that got Empanada Fork into online retailers including QVC How she figured out the sales and distribution approach through trial and error The importance of the support of the Hispanic community in her venture How Hipatia became a social media pro to market her business The most important lessons she learned in her entrepreneurial journey: to believe in the product, to be ok with being uncomfortable, patience, asking and reminding herself that other people had gone through what she was struggling. Austin Netzley is one of the first of what I call Latin inspired entrepreneurs that I will interview. By Latin inspired I mean non-Latinos that have tremendous value to offer to our community. He is an engineer, entrepreneur and avid investor. He is the founder of ONE Pursuit Investments, as well as the host of a top-rated business podcast, YoPro Wealth. At 27 years old, he left the corporate world where he was working for a Fortune 3 company to take his investing and coaching businesses to the next level. Now, he travels around the world and builds up his businesses, while he lives the exact life that he wants to. He went to college to play football and become an engineer. He graduated college with honors in the classroom (Cum Laude, Engineering Honor Inductee) and on the field (ESPN Academic All-District x2). He then took his competitive spirit and analytical abilities to test the field of entrepreneurship. After investing for a few years with moderate success, Austin decided to get serious about the stock market. He spent a lot of time networking and reading hundreds of books to learn the investing game inside and out. Then, he created his own trading algorithm and automated his strategy, so that he just turns the program on and off each day. With this, ONE Pursuit Investments was born, and Austin has since spent his time scaling that business. He wanted to get up to speed and build a great network as soon as possible. So, he started the YoPro Wealth podcast, where he interviews the world’s most successful and inspiring millionaires, investors, financial planners, entrepreneurs and subject matter experts, 3 days per week. In addition to this, he offers coaching services to help people create financial freedom while also living their dream lives. In addition, Austin puts a huge emphasis on his relationships with family and friends, traveling throughout the world, reading often, grilling out, attending concerts, and keeping as fit as possible. What you’ll Learn Austin’s American dream of freedom How he retired created financial freedom and retired at age 27 The influences that helped shift his mindset and helped him understand what true wealth is How filling his head with good information and cutting out the news, TV and negative people completely changed his energy getting rid of limiting beliefs. Why you are the average of the 5 people you spend more time with The commonalities that all of Austin’s successful wealthy guests on his podcast share. What is the first step towards success The importance of coaches and mentors to achieve success Why being willing to accept you are wrong and ask for help is key for success What is passive income and why it is key for financial freedom The key vehicles to generate passive income. Why if you want to change your life you have to change your environment The difference between the mindsets of the poor, the middle class and ultra-wealthy Why he started http://yoprowealth.com/ Resources & Links Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill book Rich Dad Poor Dad book by Robert Kyosaki The mindsets of the poor, the middle class and ultra-wealthy: http://yoprowealth.com/moneymindset/ http://yoprowealth.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/Money-Class-Table.pdf http://yoprowealth.com/034-all-about-passive-income-austin-netzley-2/ Contact info: Austin@yoprowealth.com, http://yoprowealth.com/ Thank you so much for listening ! Jose Huitron is a champion of entrepreneurship and the Co-Founder of Crowdismo, a rewards-based crowd-funding platform fueling innovation, creativity, and entrepreneurship within the Latino community. He is the organizer of Startup Weekend events and the Central Coast Chapter Director of the Latino Startup Alliance developed to encourage the inspiration and cultivation of U.S. Latino led technology startup ventures by providing a strong support network of fellow entrepreneurs, investors, innovators, & mentors. Jose holds a Master's in Integrated Marketing Communications from West Virginia University, a Bachelor's in Communication from the University of Phoenix Online, an Associate's in Business Administration and an Associate's in Management Technology from Idaho State University. What you’ll learn Jose’s American dream: being the first in his family to access higher education and making the most of those opportunities. Why Lifelong learning, and expanding your horizons is key to achieving your dream. How Jose’s entrepreneurial family inspired him early on in his life to become an entrepreneur and how he navigated the process of getting into a good college and getting a scholarship. How he launched Hub 81 a Hispanic marketing agency while going to college and working at the same time. Why it is critical get buy in from your support base when you become an entrepreneur in order to navigate all the ups and downs. You are the master of your own success as an entrepreneur because your thoughts lead to feelings which lead to actions that lead to results Great quotes: “If you are not happy with your fruits change your roots” , “We must embrace the urgency of now”, “Make action our domain” , “Images X vividness = reality”. Word of mouth is the best form of advertising so being relevant, authentic , meeting people and hustle are the big challenges entrepreneurs face. How to deal with situations where family and friends question your choice to be an entrepreneur when the money is not coming in yet. Entrepreneurial success is not about ideas it is all about execution. Use the Lean Startup methodology and if you fail, fail fast How the Latino Startup Alliance provides Latino entrepreneurs access to Silicon Valley networks and resources. Jose’s formula for success: “Focus to forget and embrace the power of a positive attitude “ and don’t be afraid to put yourself out there and meet people being confident in yourself and in your idea. The biggest challenge Latino startup entrepreneurs face is the lack of capital to the make their ideas happen: Only 1% to 2% of venture capital money goes to minority entrepreneurs as only 35% of minorities can even get in front of venture capital and only 15% of them are able to turn a pitch into funding. Latinos lack access to capital as we usually don’t have a rich uncle or the connections in the investor community we need to succeed and need to get better at pitching the business. Educating investors on the potential of the Latino market is key to helping them realize the tremendous potential.
