Denn Michael hasst Gewalt in jeder Form. Audacious, spunky, courageous, defiant, sensitive, compassionate, fierce… These are just some of the words that I feel radiating from the formidable spirit and woman that is Cristina “Mitty” Mittermeier. Hailed as one of the most influential conservation photographers of our time, this Mexican national has dedicated her entire life to protecting the world's oceans - and through her work, has inspired millions of people to do the same. Cristina was one of the first pioneers in the concept and field of conservation photography. Once told to sit down and be quiet early on in her career when she asked how photography could be used as advocacy for the world's last wild places, Cristina now has millions of followers, who are drawn to the stunning and strategic communications of her non-profit organisation Sea Legacy (which she founded with her husband Paul Niklen). It serves as a platform for many storytellers and local communities doing critical conservation work - in that way, they are amplifiers of the world's most far flung voices and the ocean's precious inhabitants. With that photography, should we be pushing out pictures showing the majesty of nature? Or should conservation photography also run a whole gamut of realistic but potentially emotionally distressing content? As we discuss today, it's a fine line and a delicate balance to tread in telling it as it is, whilst infusing hope in others, AND not wearing oneself down in anger or despair as we do so.We also speak about common myths or misconceptions that exist about the ocean as well as speculate on the creation of blue economies, what justice looks like for coastal communities, and how the world might change the immense value of these blue natural capital ecosystem would be entered into the PNL of a country.Episode Website LinkShow Links:Cristina's homepageSea LegacySea Legacy “Areas of Impact” Framework for the oceans100 For the OceanKey ConservationLook out for meditations, poems, readings, and other snippets of inspiration in between episodes.Music: Electric Ethnicity by Igor Dvorkin, Duncan Pittock & Ellie Kidd Hosted on Acast. Paul Nicklen has documented the beauty and plight of our planet for more than twenty years. His work is collected by Hollywood icons, rock stars and royalty. In 2019, he became the youngest person inducted into the International Photography Hall of Fame. He has said it is one thing to capture the natural world in a moment of grace and dignity, but that pales in comparison to an image that shines a brighter light on the environmental crisis and drives everyday people to action, even if only in some small way. His work has been singled out for creating a unique connection between image and viewer by featuring wild subjects in some of the most extreme conditions known on Earth.  He is a Sony Artisan of Imagery and aligns with Rolex's Perpetual Planet initiative on collaborative efforts to preserve the natural world. Nicklen has won more than thirty of the field's most prestigious awards, including the BBC's Wildlife Photographer of the Year, and the World Press Photo for Photojournalism. He has exhibited in galleries, museums and institutions around the world, including Hilton Asmus Contemporary (Chicago), Lyons Gallery (Australia), Galerie Gadcollection (Paris), Eisele Gallery (Cincinnati) and Fineart Oslo (Oslo).  Cristina Mittermeier was born in Mexico City in 1966. She graduated from the ITESM University in Mexico with a degree in Biochemical Engineering in Marine Sciences. She later attended the Fine Art Photography program at the Corcoran College for the Arts in Washington, D.C. She was named one of National Geographic's Adventurers of the Year in 2018.

We interview Russ Mittermeier, world famous author, mammalogist, conservationist and primate watcher. Russ takes us on a trip from a Tarzan-loving kid watching monkeys at the Bronx Zoo to a Tarzan-loving scientist discovering new species of primates in the jungles of the Amazon and Madagascar, and becoming the first person to see all 80 genera of primate in the wild. We hear about why mammalwatching is a force for conservation good, the thrill of coming face to face with a Tiger on his first day in the forests of South-east Asia, and how tales of Yetis inspired Russ's hunt for a White Uakari. Here is the YouTube trailer. For more information visit www.mammalwatching.com/podcastNotes: Russ has achieved too much to summarise in a few notes. But here goes. He has been awarded over a dozen significant prizes and medals including the 2018 Indianapolis Prize in recognition of "his major victories in protecting animal species and vital habitats." He has written over 750 articles, plus 43 books and counting, including being closely involved as both author and editor of the Handbook of the Mammals of the World series and the Lemurs of Madagascar. In 2019 the BBC's natural history unit accompanied Russ on a trip to Tanzania to spot a Kipunji, the only primate genus he had not seen in the wild. Here is the Lincoln Park Zoo's new lion exhibit that Charles mentioned.Cover art: White Uakari by Luis Claudio Marigo.Dr Charles Foley is a mammalwatcher and biologist who, together with his wife Lara, spent 30 years studying elephants in Tanzania.

So what did happen in 2012? As a fan of Jungle Deep, you will know that we had an Earth Summit this summer. But there were several other important conferences this year, too. We will hear about: - The IUCN Congress - the International Union for Conservation of Nature get-together about species conservation which took place in South Korea in September. - The Biodiversity Convention in India, in October, producing new numbers about the great contribution of Indigenous Community Conservation Areas. - The Pacific Islands Leaders Forum in August, and the dramatic increase in protected ocean areas. - The United Nations Convention on Climate Change in Qatar, in December. We are going to meet an impressive young man today, Mickey Mittermeier. Mick is a 20 year old college student who has already traveled to 64 countries(!) and mostly to tropical regions in pursuit of endangered exotic animals - special places known as Biodiversity Hotspots. These safaris included Australia, Indonesia, Estonia, Finland, Surinam, East Africa, Madagascar and many, many others. He has had this wonderful opportunity because his father is the noted primatologist and president of Conservation International, Dr. Russ Mittermeier. While his natural scientist father has been away from home most of his youth, Mick often went with his father on surveys of endangered species. As you will hear, Mick credits his Dad for his adventurous spirit, love of the wild, his scientific curiosity and his love for... TARZAN. Questions or Comments? Hello, this is your host, Dr. Jones. Thank you for joining me. I have a real treat for you today. Just a couple of episodes back, I commented on the fact that a prominent conservationist and life-long rainforest expert, and president of Conservation International, commented online about the importance of the influence of Tarzan in his choice of career. His name is Dr. Russ Mittermeier. Well, when Dr. Mittermeier heard we were talking about him on Jungle Deep, and were seeking his audience, he wanted to join in. Of course he did!
