Send us a textIn this insightful episode of the Business Growth Talks podcast, Mark Hayward dives into the transformational lessons extracted from Michael E. Gerber's influential book, "The E-Myth Revisited: Why Most Small Businesses Don't Work and What to Do About It." This discussion is packed with practical insights for entrepreneurs and small business owners who are eager to break free from the burnout cycle and scale their operations effectively. Through a detailed exploration of Gerber's core lessons, Mark empowers listeners with the strategies necessary to transition from merely working in their businesses to successfully working on their businesses. The episode kicks off by debunking the "Entrepreneurial Myth," which is the misleading belief that skill in your craft automatically translates into business success. Throughout the episode, SEO-friendly themes such as small business growth, entrepreneurial freedom, and systematization are thoroughly explored. Mark breaks down Gerber's nine essential lessons, emphasizing the importance of system-building over dependency and the need for a balanced approach among the technician, manager, and entrepreneur roles. Listeners are encouraged to adopt a strategic mindset, documenting processes and creating clear organizational structures even if they are solopreneurs, in order to elevate their ventures from self-reliant jobs to thriving, self-sufficient businesses.Key Takeaways:Understanding the Entrepreneurial Myth: Possessing a skill doesn't guarantee successful business ownership; you must build a business model around your expertise.Balancing Business Roles: Every entrepreneur plays the roles of technician, manager, and entrepreneur; neglecting any of these roles can hinder business growth.Systems Over Dependence: Establishing systems facilitates business growth and sustainability; without them, you're merely creating a job for yourself.Documentation is Key: Logging processes and tasks is crucial for scaling and sustaining business operations, especially for solopreneurs.Personal Development Equals Business Growth: The business is a reflection of the owner's skills and organization; personal development directly impacts business success.Resources:Michael E. How do you navigate running your business during times of tragedy? Every year brings moments that stop us in our tracks—world events that flood our feeds, shaking us to the core. The challenge for entrepreneurs is how to balance our human need to grieve with the responsibility to show up for our clients and business. This is something every entrepreneur faces at some point, and it's one of the hardest parts of running a business. In this episode, I share my personal experience of running a business through multiple tragedies, including the emotional toll of world events. With over 10 years in business, I've had my share of grieving moments, some that lasted for days, others that lingered for months. But I've also had to maintain a business that supports employees, serves thousands of people, and honors my commitment to clients. This episode is about finding a way to hold both grieving with humanity and fulfilling your professional obligations. What drives us to seek revenge, and why does it feel so satisfying yet leave us worse off? Guy Kawasaki sits down with James Kimmel Jr., a lawyer turned behavioral science researcher who presents a radical reinterpretation of revenge in our society. Kimmel argues that much of what we call justice-seeking is actually a dopamine-driven revenge cycle that perpetuates violence and suffering rather than solving problems.Drawing from his personal experiences as a youth and examples from history's most notorious leaders, Kimmel explores the neuroscience behind revenge addiction and introduces revolutionary concepts like the "non-justice system" - a method for breaking free from compulsive revenge-seeking behavior. His latest book, The Science of Revenge, combines legal expertise with cutting-edge brain research to reveal why forgiveness, not retaliation, is the key to healing and moving forward.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
Ever wonder why outsourcing projects fail, and how to make sure yours doesn't blow up in your face? In this episode, Matt and Luigi sit down with serial entrepreneur Russell “Sean” Languedoc, founder of Outforce.ai. Sean pulls back the curtain on why most outsourced tech projects tank, how agency bait-and-switch happens, and why understanding cultural nuance is just as important as coding expertise. From building Uber-meets-oilfield startups to tackling the outsourced engineering black hole, Sean's entrepreneurial story is raw, hilarious, and refreshingly unfiltered. Here's what you'll hear: ✅ Why most outsourced engineering projects fail ✅ The dirty secret behind agency bait-and-switch tactics ✅ How Outforce.ai built a database of 79,000+ agencies to find the right fit fast ✅ Cultural breakdowns: Why “right away” means different things around the world ✅ Sean's entrepreneurial pivots from oil fields to ad tech to global outsourcing ✅ The power of due diligence (and how Outforce makes it foolproof) ✅ GTM Fund's role in scaling SaaS companies with real revenue leaders Who is Sean? Sean Languedoc is a Canadian entrepreneur and founder of Outforce.ai, an agency matchmaking platform that de-risks outsourced engineering. With five startups under his belt, he's obsessed with solving inefficiency, from oilfield logistics to outsourced software development. He's also a partner at GTM Fund, backing the world's top SaaS startups.

In this episode, Dr. Mike Woo-Ming, dives into the world of business acquisitions as a faster, less stressful alternative to starting from scratch. He compares offline businesses (like med spas, urgent cares, or even non-healthcare ventures like restaurants) with online businesses (such as e-commerce stores, coaching platforms, or SaaS companies), outlining their unique benefits and risks. Dr. Woo-Ming shares lessons from his own successes—like acquiring a profitable medical clinic—and pitfalls, including a failed online marketing venture. He provides practical guidance on evaluating deals, from analyzing financials and customer retention to assessing location and scalability. With a detailed due diligence checklist, this episode equips physicians with the tools to make informed acquisition decisions that align with their time constraints, lifestyle goals, and desire for financial independence. Three Actionable Takeaways: Perform Thorough Due Diligence – Review at least two years of financials (P&L, balance sheets, cash flow statements), verify traffic and conversion metrics for online businesses, and insist on live screen-sharing to confirm data authenticity. Assess Business Fit for Your Lifestyle – Choose offline businesses for hands-on involvement and tangible assets, or online businesses for location freedom and scalability, based on your career stage and personal goals. Leverage Your Network and Experts – Explore opportunities through platforms like BizBuySell or Empire Flippers, tap into medical networks for unlisted deals, and consult CPAs and attorneys to avoid costly oversights. About the Host: Dr. Mike Woo-Ming has over 20 years of experience as a physician entrepreneur. He's built and sold multiple seven-figure companies and now leads Executive Medical, a group of clinics specializing in age management and aesthetics. Through BootstrapMD, he mentors physicians in business, content creation, and autonomy.

It's been one of the most consequential weeks ever in the media business, from CBS' Stephen Colbert cancellation, and Trump's lawsuit against the Wall Street Journal, to Congress clawing back more than $1 billion in funding from PBS and NPR. "I know there's a lot of benefits to automation, but when it came to [outreach], I felt it was very important for me to send personalized emails to each person in my network to tell them what I was doing and ask if I could help."If you've ever considered leaving a stable corporate career to pursue something more meaningful, Tania Will Jeppesen's story is essential listening. On this week's episode of The Speaker Lab podcast, host Grant Baldwin sits down with Tania—a former operations and HR leader who took the leap from a secure job and steady paycheck to launch her own consulting business, “The Prepared Leader.” It's an episode full of practical advice and heartfelt honesty for anyone wrestling with the tension between comfort and calling. After nearly two decades in the trenches of supply chain and operations, Tania recognized a gap: frontline managers were often overlooked in leadership development. Driven by a blend of professional experience, a supportive family, and her own faith, she finally acted on a decade-old dream. Tania brings listeners behind the scenes of that decision—sharing candidly about the fears of risk, being the main earner, and modeling courage for her daughters. What makes Tania's journey so relatable is her willingness to focus on what she can control: hard work, authenticity, and showing up for others. Rather than trying to appeal to everyone, she leans into her unique strengths, guided by a clear framework and her deep understanding of her niche. Through every challenge, she keeps her priorities in check—aiming for both business impact and quality time at home.Whether you're dreaming of your own entrepreneurial leap or just searching for courage to act, Tania's story is a timely reminder that the most meaningful success is building a life (and business) that's truly yours. You'll learn:Weighing risk aversion against entrepreneurship dreamsDecision-making and positive-outcome mindsetsHelping organizations level up frontline leadersConsulting as a viable career-pathInitial networking stepsIncorporating family into the entrepreneurial journeyMarket validation through direct-network outreachLeveraging industry knowledgeAnd much, much more!"I really wanted to go into [consulting] with a mindset of not what's the worst that could happen, but what's the best that could happen if I do this?"Episode ResourcesTania's WebsiteGet Free Speaker ResourcesBook a Call with The Speaker LabCalculate Your Speaking FeeJoin The Speaker Lab Community on FacebookSubscribe on Apple PodcastsSubscribe on SpotifySee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Yerba Madre is a brand nearly synonymous with its namesake ingredient. But in a country where most consumers have never even heard of yerba mate, a caffeine-laden herbal infusion native to South America, how do you build a household name around it? Guiding that vision is Ben Mand, who was named CEO of Yerba Madre in March 2024. Formerly known as Guayakí, the company has been pioneering yerba mate-based beverages since 1996, offering both loose-leaf and ready-to-drink formats. Today, the brand generates nearly $200 million in annual sales and is stocked in natural and conventional retailers nationwide. In this episode, Ben shares how Yerba Madre is evolving beyond its West Coast roots with a bold mission: to introduce yerba mate to the 96% of Americans who still don't know what it is. But this is about more than a beverage. Ben sees it as an opportunity to reshape how people think about clean, plant-based energy. He discusses the balance between visionary leadership and operational discipline, reigniting innovation, thinking like a founder, and scaling responsibly all while remaining rooted in the company's deeper mission: advancing regenerative agriculture in South America and building a brand that stands for purpose, authenticity, and cultural respect. Note: This episode was recorded during the breakdown of our BevNET Live Summer 2025 event and you may hear some background clatter. Our apologies for the occasional bang or boom. Show notes: 0:25: Interview: Ben Mand, CEO, Yerba Madre – Ben talks about the history of Yerba Madre and why its rebrand from Guayaki reflects its mission more clearly via a name that's more inclusive and easier for consumers to pronounce. He also highlights the functional benefits of yerba mate and emphasizes the company's regenerative business model that supports the environment and indigenous communities. Ben discusses Yerba Madre's consumer base, which is made up of primarily younger, health-conscious individuals who seek natural energy and live active lifestyles and how word-of-mouth and the simplified brand name help grow awareness. He also explains how the company is targeting convenience stores, natural retailers, and club stores to reach new consumers and how its innovation team is enhancing the brand's appeal by identifying trends and creating accessible, flavor-forward products that broaden the appeal of yerba mate. Ben also talks about how he leads with purpose and passion, using his humble roots to build company culture and why he views business as a key driver of positive social and environmental change. When businesses hit a growth ceiling, the instinct is often to throw more marketing dollars at the problem or chase the latest trend. The real question isn't whether you need to change. It's whether you'll make decisions based on data or desperation. Co-founder of Learn Grant Writing, best-selling author, and Alaskan adventuress Meredith Noble faced this exact crossroads in December 2020 when her grant writing education business lost $20,000 in a single month. Rather than guess at solutions, Meredith and her co-founder Alex implemented a systematic customer insight process that transformed everything. Listen in to learn the exact customer insight process Meredith used to re-engineer her business model, how she went from losing $20,000 to generating $45,000 in monthly recurring revenue within seven months, and why customer journey mapping is the "hill she'll die on" as a business strategy. What if accepting failure was the key to entrepreneurial success? Mark DeSantis has built and sold multiple companies over the years and like any entrepreneurial journey, it's been a mixture of ups and downs, failures and successes. But in this episode, we hear that acknowledging the possibility of failure is what gave him the courage to keep on going.Mark shares his entrepreneurial story – why he began it, how he stays motivated, and some of the best lessons he's picked up over the years. One of the top points he makes in this episode is to be problem-focused, not solutions-focused. When building tech solutions, it's easy to get lost in the tech itself and lose sight of the real problems you want it to solve. But to make anything commercially viable, especially something as “new” as robotics, it needs to solve real problems.Mark also sings the praises of Pittsburgh, which he says is one of the best cities for robotics innovation today. He's seen the city decline and grow over the years into what's now a college town that's thriving in the tech space. In this episode, find out:Mark shares what he's been up to recently, after seeing Bloomfield Robotics acquired by Kubota CorporationThe challenge of living with uncertainty as an entrepreneur and the story that inspired him to embrace fearWhy entrepreneurship is like climbing Mount Everest in that you should look in front of you, not at the summitMark's secret to enjoying the journey of entrepreneurship and the moment he decided he wanted to do this for the rest of his lifeWhy AI and robotics are perfect for the “big and boring” problems in our livesWhy we might need a Henry Ford-style revolution to take robotics to the next levelHow Pittsburgh is growing in the tech and robotics spaceWhy asking if someone wants to buy your solution is the wrong question for an entrepreneur to askEnjoying the show? In this episode, Jim walks through the shift that changed everything: from chasing returns to building freedom through ownership and control. He shares the early lessons—from a casket factory in Gary, Indiana to Wall Street boardrooms—that forced him to question the financial playbook most people follow. The real breakthrough? Understanding that freedom isn't about having more—it's about controlling what you already earn. 3 Takeaways: Ownership is leverage. Watching a business owner control time and capital changed Jim's view of wealth. It's not about working more—it's about owning the system. Control creates independence. Through Infinite Banking and cash-flow assets, Jim took back control from banks, brokers, and traditional planners. Noise is the enemy. Schools, media, and advisors push dependence. Freedom starts by questioning the script—and taking action. This episode is for anyone tired of playing defense. Listen, share, and hit subscribe to join a community that plays offense with money.

Amrit Tietz is an international DJ and co-founder of the modern motherhood platform Spread the Jelly. Although she initially set out to study economics, Tietz dropped out of college, unbeknownst to her parents, to pursue a path she was more passionate about: music. She auditioned multiple times for the West Australian Academy of Performing Arts, a music conservatory, before being accepted into the musical theater program. During her time there, she collected jazz units and switched to a music performance degree while also learning how to DJ on the side. Tietz moved to New York City after graduating and worked various jobs—from waitressing to retail—while taking DJ gigs to build her network. She eventually landed a full-time role at Starworks Agency, advancing from executive assistant to director of talent and engagement. After nearly six years at the ad agency, Tietz decided to take her DJing career full-time, successfully leaping from managing talent to becoming the talent herself. She has since toured globally, performed for iconic names like Dior and Vogue, and had her original music featured in HBO and Apple TV+ productions. While Tietz continues to DJ—and did so even while seven months pregnant—she recently moved into a new space with Spread the Jelly, an independent online platform redefining the narrative around modern motherhood. She and her co-founder, Lauren Levinger, launched the platform as a space for mothers to tell their diverse stories more authentically, build community, and “embrace the sticky” parts of motherhood together.
