The Code: A Guide to Health and Human Performance

Walking begins with the foot, and Dr. Courtney Conley shows why building strength, mobility, and healthy gait mechanics is essential for lasting wellness.   Dr. Andrew Fix speaks with Dr. Conley, the founder of Gait Happens and a leading authority on foot health, about why our feet are the true foundation of human movement. From her early struggles with pain as a dancer and triathlete to her groundbreaking work helping patients worldwide, Dr. Conley shares how shifting the focus from orthotics and surgeries to natural function and strength creates lasting results.    Together, Dr. Fix and Dr. Conley explore why toe dexterity and foot strength are vital for balance, fall prevention, and independence, and how something as simple as walking can profoundly impact physical, mental, and emotional health. With strategies, compelling research, and insights into footwear and training, this episode challenges the way we think about gait and reframes walking as one of the most powerful tools we have to protect and enhance our health for life.   Quotes “Why are we treating the foot very differently than we treat everywhere else in the human body? We don't talk about strength, we weren't talking about mobility. And our feet are the first interface that we have with the ground when we move. We have thousands of sensory receptors on the bottom of our feet that are screaming for information to tell us how to move.” (05:01 | Dr. Courtney Conley) “If you do need to have the surgery, we want to make sure that on the other end of that, that you're doing everything that you can to not have another one of those surgeries, which means the widest part of the foot is our toes, or should be. So whoever's listening, look down at your foot. Your toes should be splayed, they should be wide, and they should be the widest part of your foot. And there's a reason for that, because when we're walking, we push off of our forefoot.” (10:09 | Dr. Courtney Conley) “There's really great research looking at Karen Mickle's work on the importance of toe strength and fall prediction, the risk of falls. And what they found was that a weakness in toe strength can be a very big predictor of falls as we age.” (22:37 | Dr. Courtney Conley) “I firmly believe walking is the most underrated and easily accessible tool we all have to improve not only our physical health, but also our mental and emotional well-being—yet the majority of us, globally, are not taking advantage of it.” (44:48 | Dr. Courtney Conley)   Connect with Dr. Courtney Conley: Gait Happens   Dr. Courtney Conley is a leading expert in foot and gait health and the founder of Gait Happens, an education platform transforming how people understand and reclaim foot function. Dr. David Griffin, a Charleston, South Carolina native, is a nationally recognized leader, speaker, author, and fire service professional whose life was forever changed on June 18, 2007. As the driver of the first engine on scene at the devastating Sofa Super Store fire that claimed the lives of nine Charleston firefighters, David was thrust into a journey of trauma, transformation, and ultimately, purpose. Haunted by survivor's guilt, Griffin initially spiraled into destructive coping mechanisms including alcohol, painkillers, and professional mixed martial arts fighting. After a punishing bout with UFC veteran Houston “The Assassin” Alexander left him battered and soul-searching, he came to a powerful realization: the path he was on did not honor the legacy of the nine lives lost. That moment became the catalyst for his life's mission to lead change, challenge outdated systems, and promote healing and resilience among first responders and organizations worldwide. Today, Dr. Griffin holds a Doctorate of Education in Organizational Leadership and Development, a Master's Degree in Executive Fire Service Leadership, and a Bachelor of Science in Education from The Citadel, where he also played Division I baseball and later coached. He currently serves as the Assistant Chief for the Charleston Fire Department, having held every uniformed rank, and leads the department's Honor Guard and Mental Health Peer Support Team. He is a graduate of the National Fire Academy's Executive Fire Officer program and has completed executive education at Harvard, Yale, Cornell, and through the IAFC's Fire Service Executive Development Institute. He is a Certified Fire Officer IV, Chief Fire Officer (CFO), and Chief Training Officer (CTO), and is an active member of the IAFC and the Institution of Fire Engineers (MIFireE). Beyond his fire service career, Griffin's personal journey is one of grit and resilience. From overcoming doubts as a young athlete to becoming a state bodybuilding champion, professional MMA fighter, marathoner, and Ironman triathlete, he lives what he teaches. He was a rider in the 1,700-mile Brotherhood Ride from Florida to Ground Zero and continues to pursue fitness through boxing, surfing, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, and more. In 2013, David launched The Find Your Mission Tour, an international movement of leadership, mental health awareness, and cultural reform. Over the last 12 years, he has spoken to more than 1,300 organizations across 47 U.S. states and multiple countries, reaching over 550,000 people in five languages. His audiences include fire and police departments, military units, universities, private companies, and nonprofits. He is also a best-selling author with four published books: In Honor of The Charleston 9: A Study of Change Following Tragedy ACTION: 9 Missions for Personal and Professional Growth From PTSD to PTG: A Firefighter's (MY) Journey After a Multiple LODD Incident Tattoos and Trauma: The Healing Power of Tattoos for Emergency Responders Griffin is currently working on three new books: I'll Stand By You, Principled Leadership From The Road Less Traveled, and Handwritten Hope: Poetry and Prose to Cope. His wife, Melissa Griffin, is also an author, having written Inspiration from a Wife on a Mission Following Tragedy, which details the challenges of supporting a partner with PTSD. Dr. David Griffin is living proof that adversity can be transformed into impact. His message is clear: trauma does not have to define you your mission can.

Sometimes the most tempting quick fixes, like eating only one type of food, can actually set you back on your health journey. In this episode, I explored the viral TikTok trend known as the watermelon diet, breaking down why it may seem tempting but is ultimately risky and unsustainable. I shared a story about a friend who was pressured to try it and explained how social media can create unrealistic expectations and comparisons. While watermelon has health benefits like hydration, low calories, and vitamins, I highlighted the dangers of relying on it exclusively—nutrient deficiencies, loss of muscle mass, blood sugar spikes, digestive issues, and unsustainable weight loss. I emphasized that real progress comes from balance: eating a variety of nutrient-rich foods, staying consistent with healthy habits, moving in enjoyable ways, managing stress, and prioritizing rest. Most importantly, I reminded listeners to focus on their own journey, celebrate small wins, and not let social media dictate their worth.   Tune in to discover the truth behind viral diet trends and learn healthier, lasting ways to reach your goals.   Episode Highlights: The rise of the viral watermelon diet on social media Why extreme mono fruit diets are risky and unsustainable Health benefits of watermelon in moderation Nutrient deficiencies and health risks linked to the diet The role of comparison and pressure from social media Science-backed strategies for balanced, long-term weight loss Importance of mindset, consistency, and celebrating small wins Connect with Dr. Alicia Shelly: Website | drshellymd.com Facebook | www.facebook.com/drshellymd Instagram | @drshellymd Linked In | www.linkedin.com/in/drshellymd Twitter | @drshellymd About Dr. Alicia Shelly Dr. Alicia Shelly was raised in Atlanta, GA. Your body is always speaking—through pain, posture, and even memory. In this episode, Dr. Colby Lovelace joins CJ to explore how neuromechanics, fascia, and neurotags reveal the hidden roadblocks to healing. Discover how listening to your body restores balance, wholeness, and flow.In this episode, CJ welcomes Dr. Colby Lovelace, a highly accomplished chiropractor with a background in Nutritional Sciences, Health and Wellness, and a Doctorate of Chiropractic from Parker University. With certifications in sports injury management, concussion treatment, rehabilitation, and hyperbaric oxygen therapy, Dr. Colby brings a wealth of knowledge about how the body heals, adapts, and restores balance. Together, they explore what it truly means to listen to your body and honor its innate wisdom through the lens of neuromechanics.Dr. Colby explains the fascinating science of fascia—the connective tissue that links every part of the body in patterns of motion. He reveals how movement, even in simple forms, shifts fluid dynamics, stimulates neurological input, and restores the body's natural symmetry. A release in one part of the body can affect another far away, reminding us that healing is always about wholeness. CJ connects this to his own creative practice, where he encourages art students to move before they paint—because movement unlocks not just physical energy but mental and emotional flow.Listeners will also discover how movement can awaken memory, spark creativity, and shift brain function. Dr. Colby discusses how senses like smell and motion activate different regions of the brain, enhancing learning and dissolving blocks. He introduces the concept of neurotags—stimuli that can trigger old memories, emotions, or pain responses—and explains how movement and myofascial release can help rewire those patterns. Pain, he reminds us, is not just a nuisance but a message—a call from the body to pay attention and move differently. At the heart of Dr. Colby's philosophy is the belief that the body is a self-healing mechanism, equipped with innate intelligence. Sometimes, all it needs is for us to remove the roadblocks—whether they stem from thoughts, traumas, or toxins—the three T's that most often disrupt balance. This conversation is a powerful reminder that health is not about forcing the body, but about listening, aligning, and allowing it to return to its own symmetry. CTL Script/ Top Stories of August 15th Publish Date: August 15th Pre-Roll: From the Ingles Studio Welcome to the Award-Winning Cherokee Tribune Ledger Podcast Today is Friday, August 15th and Happy Birthday to Joe Jonas I’m Peyton Spurlock and here are the stories Cherokee is talking about, presented by Times Journal Canton approves contract for creation of Cherokee land bank University System of Georgia packs huge economic punch Cherokee County schools show Milestones improvements Plus, Leah McGrath from Ingles Markets on Food Apps We’ll have all this and more coming up on the Cherokee Tribune-Ledger Podcast, and if you’re looking for Community news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe! Commercial: COBB INT. FESTIVAL STORY 1: Canton approves contract for creation of Cherokee land bank The Cherokee Regional Land Bank is inching closer to reality. On Aug. 7, Canton’s City Council gave the green light to an intergovernmental contract to create the land bank. Now, it’s up to the Cherokee County Board of Commissioners, along with the councils in Holly Springs and Woodstock, to decide. No dates yet, but they’ll weigh in soon. So, what’s a land bank? Think of it as a way to breathe life into abandoned or blighted properties—turning eyesores into opportunities. The idea’s been in the works since late 2022, with Canton and Cherokee County leading the charge. If approved, a board of directors will oversee the land bank, with members appointed by the county, cities, and the Cherokee Office of Economic Development. They’ll work unpaid, but their mission? Big: housing, economic development, and revitalizing neglected spaces. Canton Mayor Bill Grant called it a “tool” to tackle housing and economic goals. And while the land bank won’t have eminent domain powers, it could still be a game-changer for the region. Bartow County already has one—maybe Cherokee’s next. STORY 2: University System of Georgia packs huge economic punch Georgia’s public colleges and universities are making waves—big ones. In fiscal 2024, the University System of Georgia (USG) pumped $23.1 billion into the state’s economy. That’s a 5.4% jump from last year. Here’s the breakdown: $15.2 billion came from direct spending—students, staff, and the 26 institutions themselves. The other $7.9 billion? That’s the ripple effect, money flowing into local businesses and communities. And for students? The payoff is huge. A bachelor’s degree from a USG school means, on average, $1.4 million more in lifetime earnings. Master’s grads? $1.7 million. Doctorates? Nearly $2.5 million. USG schools also created jobs—lots of them. About 32% were on campus, but the majority—68%—were off campus, fueling local economies. The studies, led by Jeff Humphreys of UGA’s Selig Center, show just how much these institutions matter—to students, to communities, to the entire state. STORY 3: Cherokee County schools show Milestones improvements The Cherokee County School District is celebrating some solid wins on the Georgia Milestones, with scores improving in most areas compared to last year and outperforming state averages for the 10th year running. Biggest gains? Math, science, and reading saw notable jumps, with highlights like an impressive 7.7% increase in eighth-grade science and a 7.4% boost in Algebra I. But it wasn’t all perfect—third-grade scores dipped slightly, and English Language Arts saw declines in a few grades, especially fifth (-8.3%). School Board Chair Janet Read Welch called the results “proof we’re on the right track,” crediting students, teachers, and parents for the progress. Superintendent Mary Elizabeth Davis echoed the optimism. The board will dive deeper into the data at its Aug. 21 meeting, with school-by-school results to follow online. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.874.3200 for more info. We’ll be right back. Break: HISTORY CHEROKEE STORY 4: Woodstock OKs construction contracts for two fire stations Woodstock is gearing up for two new fire stations, both set to open in 2026. On Aug. 11, the city council approved contracts with Spratlin Construction to build Fire Station 28 on Ridgewalk Parkway and another on Long Drive—both 11,000 square feet. Why now? Rising call volumes. But when the contractor offered savings for building two at once, the city jumped. The move saves $606,000 and avoids hiring extra firefighters, thanks to a clever staffing plan. Station 28 will cost $7.4 million, Long Drive $6.8 million. Both are major investments in public safety, with funding from SPLOST and impact fees. Currently, Woodstock has two fire stations: Station 10, built in 1996, and Station 14, the department’s 2001-built headquarters. The new additions will dramatically improve coverage and response times for the growing city. STORY 5: Cherokee County teacher wins award from Georgia PTA A big shoutout to Mill Creek Middle School’s Ann-Margaret Somers, who just snagged the Georgia PTA’s Birney Butler Outstanding Educator award for middle schools. Pretty amazing, right? This isn’t her first rodeo with recognition. Somers, an eighth-grade science teacher, has racked up honors like Georgia Science Teachers Association’s Middle School Teacher of the Year (2022-23) and Georgia STEM Scholar in 2022—an award only about two dozen teachers statewide receive. Oh, and in 2020? She was one of just 26 teachers nationwide named a Teacher Fellow by the Northrop Grumman Foundation and National Science Teaching Association. Somers joined CCSD in 2015, and clearly, she’s been crushing it ever since. And now here is Leah McGrath from Ingles Markets on Food Apps Commercial: We’ll have closing comments after this. He shares his transformation through a spiritual crisis and, ultimately, his creation of a more meaningful life. He provides four intersecting maps to help guide readers through the experiential process of metaphoric death, reclaiming the soul, and sharing one's genius with others. These four maps—the cosmological map, psychological map, alchemical map, and mythopoetic map—draw on the mythological stages of Joseph Campbell, Carl Jung's process of individuation, the Tibetan Buddhist alchemy of conscious rebirth, and the astrological phenomenon of the precession of the equinoxes, offering a detailed philosophical underpinning for the soul's journey to immortality. He also provides in-depth visualization practices based on ancient Tibetan wisdom to support you on the path of self-realization.Integrating Tibetan Buddhism with psychology, trauma healing, neuroscience, and mythology, along with profound personal experience, Neale provides a step-by-step manual for spiritual rebirth, revealing how to reframe life's unrelenting challenges and transitions as opportunities for psychological growth.Dr. Miles Neale, PsyD is a psychotherapist in private practice, teacher of Tibetan Buddhism, founder of the Gradual Path for inner and outer journeys, author of Gradual Awakening, and co-editor of Advances in Contemplative Psychotherapy. His forthcoming book, Return with Elixir: Four Maps for the Pilgrimage of the Soul Through Death and Rebirth (Inner Traditions, 2025), integrates Joseph Campbell's mythology, Carl Jung's psychology, Tibetan Buddhist alchemy, and the precession of the equinoxes.Over the past twenty-five years, Miles has fused Eastern spirituality with Western psychology. He earned a Masters in meditation research from New York University, a Doctorate in clinical psychology from the California Institute of Integral Studies, and trained in long-term mentor-student relationships with preeminent American Buddhist scholars Professor Robert Thurman, PhD, and Dr. Joseph Loizzo, MD, PhD as well as Tibetan master Geshe Tenzin Zopa.Miles has taught psychology and meditation at the integrative medical clinics of Harvard, Columbia, and Cornell Universities, designed and led the Contemplative Studies Immersion certificate program based on the Tibetan gradual path (lam rim), offers courses and workshops internationally including at the Tibet House, US, and has initiated fundraising campaigns for nunneries in the Himalayan region.Miles curates and leads life-changing pilgrimages to sacred sites around the world and lives with his wife and two kids in Bali, Indonesia.www.milesneale.comBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/earth-ancients--2790919/support.

You have to give God something to work with to win in spiritual warfare. Think of the boy who gave Jesus his lunch. Jesus adds to and multiplies what we give Him, but the devil subtracts and divides. Many times, we are so consumed with what we need from God that it never once crosses our mind what God wants from us. Could it be that giving something you already have is the key to what you are asking God for? There are no excuses with God when He is offering us everything in return.

Family isn't one-size-fits-all. And neither is the journey to building one. In today's episode of Chick Chat, we're diving into a conversation that challenges traditional ideas of family and motherhood. Whether you're a new parent, dreaming of parenthood, or simply curious about your own path, this episode will inspire you to embrace possibility and self-discovery. So many of us grow up with certain expectations about what “family” should look like. But what if you could design a family that truly reflects your values, dreams, and lifestyle? That's exactly what today's guest, Dr. Gertrude Lyons, empowers people to do. Through her work, she invites us to explore our deepest desires around family-building, challenge societal norms, and step into motherhood — or the essence of mothering — in an intentional, fulfilling way. Who is Dr. Gertrude Lyons? Dr. Gertrude Lyons is the visionary behind Rewrite The Mother Code, a groundbreaking approach to personal transformation and family creation. With over 20 years of experience in coaching, women's development, and holistic parenting, she combines her Doctorate in Education and Master's in Psychology to help individuals and families live more authentically. Her mission is to help people tap into the essence of “mothering” as a creative, nurturing energy that transcends biology, empowering them to lead more intentional, joyful lives. What We Discussed in This Episode In our conversation, Dr. Gertrude introduces the concept of being “Mother-Curious” — an invitation to explore what family means to you, free from societal pressure or traditional timelines. She shares why so many people struggle to create the family they truly want and the myths that can hold them back. We talk about her personal journey to motherhood, how support systems can make or break your family-building experience, and what to do if fear of judgment is stopping you from living your truth. Plus, she gives practical first steps for anyone ready to explore their Mother-Curious path and create a family that feels aligned with their heart. Final Thoughts This episode is a reminder that your journey to family, whatever it looks like, is valid, worthy, and entirely your own. By embracing curiosity, breaking free from old narratives, and building strong support systems, you can open the door to a family life that truly fulfills you. This week, Ivy Slater, host of Her Success Story, chats with her guest, Dr. Keith Dorsey. The two talk about the journey toward greater gender diversity in corporate boardrooms, the importance of cognitive diversity as a business imperative, and actionable strategies women can use to position themselves for board opportunities. In this episode, we discuss:  Dr. Keith Dorsey's transition from a career as a turnaround specialist in corporate America and the U.S. Air Force into board advisory and executive coaching, and his eventual focus on increasing diversity on corporate boards. What inspired Dr. Dorsey's recent book, The Boardroom Journey, which provides strategies for women pursuing board seats, and how this work stemmed from both his academic and practical experiences. When recent progress in women's board representation saw a spike—from under 15% to over 30% in California and among Fortune 500/SP500 firms after 2018—but why these gains may have plateaued and what needs to happen next. Why women must control what they can, actively building their personal brand, networking widely, and repairing old relationships, to ensure future opportunities. How the “who knows you” factor is a game changer for board placement, visibility, reputation, and even relationships, to unexpected connections can make all the difference. Dr. Keith D. Dorsey is an executive coach, thought leader, and author with 25+years of experience in leadership development, corporate governance, and OptimalDiversity™—a framework pairing visible demographics with hidden strengths like unique experiences and perspectives to boost performance. His book, The Boardroom Journey, delivers practical strategies for women pursuing board seats. Keith holds a Doctorate in Organizational Change and Leadership from USC and an MBA from Pepperdine. As a trusted advisor, he empowers professionals to break barriers, build social capital, and lead with purpose at the highest organizational levels. When it comes to weight loss, the scale isn't the only thing that changes—your reflection and self-image often transform too. In this episode, I talk about a topic gaining attention in the media and social circles: "Ozempic face" and the emotional and physical effects of rapid weight loss, especially for those using GLP-1 medications like Wegovy, Zepbound, or Ozempic. I share a story about a friend who hesitated to increase her dosage due to concerns about skin changes, which opened the door to a larger discussion on body image during weight loss. I explain that these facial and skin changes—such as sagging, wrinkles, or looking more tired—aren't exclusive to medication use but are common with any significant weight loss, especially as we age.  Furthermore, I walk through ways to manage these concerns, like slowing down weight loss, prioritizing resistance training and protein, staying hydrated, considering aesthetic treatments, and most importantly, shifting focus from appearance to overall health. I emphasize the importance of support, tuning out unsolicited comments, and curating a healthier social media feed.  If you're navigating weight loss and struggling with body image changes like "Ozempic face," listen to this empowering episode for real talk, expert tips, and compassionate support on your journey.   Episode Highlights: What “Ozempic face” really means and why it happens Emotional impact of rapid weight loss and changing appearance How to manage body image concerns during weight loss Practical tips: strength training, hydration, and pacing weight loss Cosmetic treatment options and when to consider them The role of social media in shaping unrealistic expectations Reframing the focus from appearance to overall health and wellness Connect with Dr. Alicia Shelly: Website | drshellymd.com Facebook | www.facebook.com/drshellymd Instagram | @drshellymd Linked In | www.linkedin.com/in/drshellymd Twitter | @drshellymd About Dr. Alicia Shelly Dr. Alicia Shelly was raised in Atlanta, GA. In this episode, Shena Gazaway joins us in a discussion of her nurse-led research, providing primary palliative care in patients' homes— where this care is urgently needed but often overlooked. We explore how she leads serious illness conversations, manages complex chronic conditions, and builds trust with patients and families to ensure care aligns with their values.   From qualitative studies to pilot-tested toolkits that empower patients and caregivers—especially in underserved Black communities—we explore what it truly means to lead with empathy, equity, and evidence.  Whether you're a nephrology nurse wondering how to deepen your role or a provider curious about innovative palliative care pathways, this episode offers practical insights, personal stories, and a call for more providers in this vital space.      Shena Gazaway PhD, RN, CHPN®  Shena Gazaway PhD, RN, CHPN® is currently an Assistant Professor in the School of Nursing at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Specifically, her research is focused on developing and optimizing community-informed decision-support interventions for individuals living with advanced chronic kidney disease and their caregivers.
