All of her advanced degrees were earned while raising her children and working full-time. (6:00) She is an Emergency doctor, and has been since 2002. She was also trying to get her parents to be healthier; however, they have a hard time adjusting to improved and updated information. Vinnie has had a similar issue with his parents, particularly his mother. Due to a medical problem, he was caring for his Mom, and that's when he helped his parents implement changes. (12:00) There are ways to eat healthily on a fixed income. (16:00) Dr. Amy shares her experience getting her mother the correct medical help. (22:30) The discussion turns to the oft-misused term "doctor," referring to people who use it without an MD or PhD in medicine. (30:00) There is a challenge working with most Registered Dieticians as well. (40:00) Dr. Amy speaks about her challenges in convincing her parents to continue the healthy plan she set up for them. (43:00) Many people often say they will "do anything" to get fit and healthy, except for doing the actual things that get you fit and healthy. Hi and welcome to How Humans Heal. I'm Dr. Doni Wilson, and in this episode I'm going to talk about how to take care of ourselves and our health during the holidays. Very often what I hear from people is that we hit a certain point in the year and then when the holidays start happening—no matter which country you live in and no matter which holidays you observe—the holidays can really throw off your healthcare routine. Next thing you know, months go by and you find yourself coming out of it thinking, "What just happened to me?" And you have to start all over again. I want to share some tips with you so that hopefully I can help you to change that pattern and even improve your health during the holidays. These same tips will help you if you're under stress of any type. A lot of times, if you're going through a point in your life where there's a lot of activity, extra things going on, extra demands emotionally and physically on yourself, that's when we tend to take care of ourselves LESS when we should be taking care of ourselves more. I want to encourage you that it is possible to learn to take care of yourself during times of stress. It's start with awareness and a willingness to observe ourselves. And specifically, a willingness to be gentle and loving with yourself instead of judging yourself or being critical or harsh on yourself. I'm here to help you! He served as the NBA's Vice President of Referee Operations and Director of Officials, after 25 seasons as an NBA referee. Prior to his career in professional basketball, Delaney was a highly decorated New Jersey State Trooper who went undercover to infiltrate the mafia; causing his post-traumatic stress journey. Delaney's firsthand experiences coupled with a passion to better understand mental health make him an expert on the subject. His efforts to educate and bring attention to the topic of post-traumatic stress have entailed visits to military troops around the world, including multiple trips to Afghanistan and Iraq. Described by retired General Robert Brown, U.S. Army Four Star Commander of the Pacific, as the "person who related to soldiers better than any visitor I have seen in my 36 years in the military," Delaney authored a book on the topic, Surviving the Shadows: A Journey of Hope into Post Traumatic Stress. He is also the author of Covert: My Life Infiltrating the Mob. His most recent book - Heroes are Human...Lessons in Resilience, Courage and Wisdom from the COVID Frontlines shares the emotional toll on our healthcare community as they fought an invisible enemy.
