Broadcast from KSQD, Santa Cruz on 5-14-2026: An emailer from Switzerland follows up on the case of neurological symptoms, warning about the fox tapeworm Echinococcus multilocularis from unwashed garden vegetables and tick-borne encephalitis requiring the FSME vaccine available in Europe. Dr. Dawn adds that cysticercosis from undercooked pork leaves calcified brain lesions detectable on CT scans. Dr. Dawn covers the Andes hantavirus outbreak that sickened at least eleven people on a cruise ship, with the virus spreading person-to-person unlike other hantaviruses. She explains that Andes virus grows to unusually high levels in blood and resists antimicrobial compounds in human saliva, with super-spreaders driving transmission chains. British paratroopers had to parachute medical supplies to an infected passenger on remote Tristan da Cunha island. Dr. Dawn reviews brain health supplements with UCLA longevity expert Gary Small. Both recommend curcumin (500-1,000mg) for anti-inflammatory effects and CoQ10 for statin users. She endorses multivitamins and high-quality fish oil but considers creatine, phosphatidylserine, and nicotinamide riboside insufficiently proven for cognitive enhancement. A caller asks about supplements and testosterone for a 77-year-old. Dr. Dawn recommends topical testosterone (patches, creams, gels) over injections to avoid testicular shrinkage and elevated sex hormone-binding globulin. She emphasizes protein intake matching one's age in grams, branched-chain amino acids during exercise, and warns against fasted training after age 65. An emailer shares news that PCOS is being renamed to polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome (PMOS) because many patients lack ovarian cysts, and genetic males can also have the condition. Dr. Dawn explains it's fundamentally an endocrine and metabolic disorder involving insulin resistance, elevated testosterone, and DHEA dysregulation. A study found that infrasound—low-frequency sound below human hearing range—elevated cortisol and worsened mood in subjects who didn't know and couldn't detect it was playing. Old buildings generate infrasound through aging boilers, ventilation ducts, and metal pipes, potentially explaining why, beyond autosuggestion, that old "haunted" houses feel spooky.

Stuart Tomc, a globally recognized leader in Omega 3 science, discussed his journey in the nutrition industry, emphasizing the shift from guess-based supplementation to test-based precision nutrition. He highlighted the importance of maintaining a balance between Omega 6 and Omega 3, ideally a 1:1 ratio, for optimal health. Tomc introduced Zinzino's Omega 3 blood spot test, which has tested 1.7 million people globally, revealing significant imbalances. He explained Zinzino's Balance Oil, which includes polyphenols for stability and efficacy, For the transcript and full story go to: https://www.drmanonbolliger.com/stuart-tomc Highlights from today's episode include: Stuart says Test, don't guess: Omega‑6:3 balance in red blood cells is the key inflammatory "vital sign" – you can take fish oil and still be completely out of the safe zone. Stuart explains fish oil ≠ fish: Most refined fish oils are "naked," stripped of protective polyphenols, so they don't behave like real food; Balance Oil restores that missing polyphenol protection. Manon states health sovereignty: People should be the CEOs of their own health—using at‑home tests to know their status and keeping (or firing) practitioners based on results. Nutritionist Leyla Muedin discusses joint inflammation—its symptoms (swelling, pain, redness, warmth, morning stiffness, reduced range of motion) and why it is usually a sign of an underlying condition rather than a disease itself. She reviews common causes including osteoarthritis (cartilage wear and tear), rheumatoid arthritis (autoimmune synovium attack with prolonged morning stiffness and fatigue), gout (uric acid crystals, often in the big toe), psoriatic arthritis, injuries, autoimmune diseases (e.g., lupus, ankylosing spondylitis, Sjogren's), infections such as septic arthritis requiring urgent care, and surrounding-tissue problems like tendonitis and bursitis. Lifestyle factors that worsen inflammation include excess weight, poor diet (including unaddressed food allergies; avoiding nightshades is suggested), insulin resistance contributing to gout, lack of exercise, smoking, and stress. Management strategies include rest, bracing, ice vs. heat, OTC anti-inflammatories, gentle low-impact exercise, anti-inflammatory foods, weight loss, treating root causes, and supplements such as glucosamine, chondroitin, MSM, bromelain, turmeric, Boswellia, and quercetin.
Optimizing Health Span: Longevity, Inflammation, and Immune Resilience with Dr. Robert SilvermanIn this special look-back episode, we're revisiting a conversation originally released in 2023 with Dr. Robert Silverman on one of the most important topics in modern healthcare: health span. While this episode was recorded during an earlier phase of the longevity conversation, the core themes remain highly relevant today. In Part 1, Dr. Silverman breaks down the difference between lifespan and health span, why chronic disease continues to shorten quality of life for so many patients, and why clinicians need to think more broadly about the systems that influence long-term vitality, resilience, and recovery.Together, we explore the role of immune resilience, inflammation, the microbiome, mitochondrial health, fascia, vagus nerve tone, muscle mass, and metabolic signaling in healthy aging. Dr. Silverman also shares the biomarkers and clinical concepts he believes deserve more attention when evaluating chronic disease risk, biological aging, and overall patient function. This episode is a valuable revisit for providers who want to think beyond symptom management and better understand the foundations of long-term health and performance. Whether you're hearing it for the first time or coming back to it with fresh ears, Part 1 sets the stage for a deeper conversation around what it really takes to help patients live longer — and live better.Key Themes in Today's Episode:The difference between lifespan and health span — and why both matter in clinical practiceWhy immune resilience may be one of the most important drivers of longevityBiomarkers Dr. Silverman watches when evaluating inflammation, metabolic health, cardiovascular risk, and gut permeability

Only nine scientists were asked to advise on the 2025 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, and Dr. Tom Brenna was one of them. In this conversation, he pulls back the curtain on how dietary guidelines are actually made, why the process has never been the same twice, and what it was like to watch a decades-old saturated fat recommendation get carried forward despite a lack of evidence supporting it at the level of total mortality. This is the dietary guidelines conversation the internet has been missing: straight from someone who was actually in the room.Want ad-free episodes? Omega-3 fatty acids (particularly EPA and DHA) have a long history in nutrition and cardiovascular medicine, yet the clinical trial literature is often perceived as inconsistent. This episode examines why some randomized trials show clear benefit while others show null or mixed findings, and how differences in trial design, dose, population risk, and outcome selection can materially change what we observe. A key theme is separating (1) the persistent cultural narratives around omega-3s (including origin stories that do not hold up well to modern evidence) from (2) the more precise, mechanistic and clinical questions about where supplemental EPA/DHA may reduce cardiovascular risk. The discussion focuses heavily on understanding heterogeneity: why "omega-3 supplementation" is not a single, uniform exposure, and why subgroup patterns (e.g., secondary prevention, higher baseline triglycerides, and higher doses) may explain much of the apparent conflict in the evidence. Note: This discussion is taken from a previous episode of the podcast. The audio has been remastered and improved, and now study notes and full transcript are available. Broadcast from KSQD, Santa Cruz on 2-26-2026: Dr. Dawn opens with an urgent measles advisory, noting the virus has an R-value of 15 compared to COVID's peak of 5, with South Carolina reporting over 1,000 cases. She recommends those who received only one MMR shot—particularly people now in their 60s—get an immune titer blood test, as protection declines after 40-50 years. Measles can cause "immune amnesia" destroying immunity to other pathogens, and rarely leads to fatal subacute sclerosing panencephalitis years later. Dr. Dawn criticizes Quest Labs' cholesterol reporting, which flags average levels as "moderate risk" with alarming red H markers even when values fall within their own stated normal ranges. She explains this creates unnecessary panic and pushes patients toward statins based on outdated 2008-2012 guidelines, when cardiology has since recognized that cholesterol can be too low. An emailer asks how an EKG can detect a past heart attack from "jagged lines." Dr. Dawn explains that each spike represents electrical signals moving toward or away from electrode pads, and a 12-lead EKG views the heart from multiple angles—smaller-than-expected spikes in specific leads indicate dead or damaged heart muscle. She urges everyone to learn CPR and AED use, which more than doubles survival chances. An emailer reports that food tastes strong on the first bite but becomes tasteless thereafter. Dr. Dawn identifies numerous medications causing taste changes including calcium channel blockers, beta blockers, statins, diuretics, and even acetaminophen. She also highlights zinc—both deficiency and toxicity above 40mg daily can impair taste, noting a zinc nasal spray was pulled from market after causing smell loss. An emailer asks about Prenuvo full-body MRI scans costing $499-1,000. Dr. Dawn cautions that while Prenuvo found 22 cancers in 1,000 people scanned, 1 in 20 scans requires follow-up biopsy and more than half are false positives—leading to stress, expense, and potential complications from unnecessary procedures. An emailer asks about seed oils after reading a Johns Hopkins article defending them. Dr. Dawn distinguishes fruit oils (olive, avocado) from industrially-extracted seed oils requiring hexane solvent, a neurotoxin that may leave residues despite claims of evaporation. She cites a BMJ study showing coconut oil raised HDL (good cholesterol) while matching olive oil's LDL impact, and recommends cold-pressed oils while avoiding hexane-extracted products, especially for infants.

On this episode of Vitality Radio, Jared takes a closer look at the cholesterol conversation and the widespread use of statin medications through a functional health lens. Rather than relying on fear or headlines, he explores how cholesterol numbers are interpreted, the difference between risk markers and root causes, and why metabolic health, inflammation, and lifestyle factors may play a larger role in long-term heart wellness. Jared also explains concepts like absolute risk, number needed to treat (NNT), and why informed decision-making matters when evaluating any health strategy. This episode encourages listeners to ask better questions, seek clarity, and consider a comprehensive approach to cardiovascular health that includes nutrition, movement, and targeted supplementation. This week, Dr. Kahn dives into four new research papers on omega-3 fatty acids and their impact on heart and brain health. The discussion highlights several eye-opening findings, including reduced atrial fibrillation risk and improved cardiovascular outcomes in patients undergoing hemodialysis. Dr. Kahn also explains how omega-3 intake supports brain health and why the "right" dose depends on the specific condition being addressed. Food sources, fish oil, algae-based supplements, and ahiflower are compared as practical ways to reach optimal omega-3 levels. Additional topics in this episode include newly approved AI software for early detection of heart disease, the role of statins in patients with type 2 diabetes, the science—and hype—around NAD+ boosters, and emerging data on Prolon fasting for Crohn's disease. Dr. Kahn also reviews concerning research on heart rhythm risks associated with high-intensity endurance exercise in athletes over the age of 50. As always, the episode blends cutting-edge research with real-world clinical insight to help clarify what actually matters for long-term heart health. Thanks to The Fresh Pressed Olive Oil Club — get a bottle for $1 at getfreshDRKAHN.com. More About This Episode This episode takes a deeper look at why omega-3 blood levels matter more than simply taking a supplement. Dr. Kahn reviews large population studies linking higher omega-3 levels to lower risks of atrial fibrillation, early-onset dementia, and major cardiovascular events, including in high-risk groups such as patients on hemodialysis. The key takeaway: testing omega-3 status and personalizing intake may be far more effective than a one-size-fits-all approach. Beyond omega-3s, Dr. Kahn explores several timely and surprising topics, including AI-enhanced CT scan technology designed to detect silent heart disease without additional radiation, real-world data on statin benefits in patients with type 2 diabetes, and why costly NAD+ supplements may ultimately function as a form of vitamin B3. The episode also examines new evidence on fasting-mimicking diets for Crohn's disease and potential heart rhythm risks in high-level endurance athletes over 50. Throughout the discussion, Dr. Kahn emphasizes practical, evidence-based steps patients can review with their physicians, including omega-3 blood testing, coronary calcium scoring, and tailoring lifestyle and supplement strategies to individual risk factors.
