Sasha Hamdani (Too Sensitive: Rejection, Resilience, and the Science of Feeling Deeply) is a board-certified psychiatrist and ADHD clinical specialist. Sasha joins the Armchair Expert to discuss the classroom insurrection she started which led to her ADHD diagnosis, how her residency rebuilt the confidence that medical school degraded, and that symptoms known today as ADHD first showed up in the 1700s. Sasha and Dax talk about her beef with diagnostic labels and how often trauma is misdiagnosed as ADHD, how liberating it was to understand the way her brain functions, and neurological reasons why grief is so destabilizing for someone with ADHD. Sasha explains the importance of being able to emotionally regulate before conflict, her hot take on self-diagnosis, and non-stimulant, skills-based approaches that work well to treat ADHD.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

In this episode of Psychologists Off the Clock, Yael talks with Sonja Lyubomirsky and Harry Reis about their book, How to Feel Loved: The Five Mindsets That Get You More of What Matters Most, and why it is possible to be loved but not actually feel loved. They explore what really helps people feel cared for and understood in any kind of relationship, why stress or attachment patterns can get in the way, and how small mindset shifts like listening to learn or being willing to go first can make a big difference in how connected you feel.It is less about following relationship rules and more about how you show up. In nature, enzymes are the catalysts that make much of biology work. They jumpstart chemical reactions that either wouldn't happen, or would happen super slowly. They break down food, build other molecules, extract energy, and more. What if we could harness evolution to engineer designer enzymes that do other specific jobs that benefit us?  Putting that idea into practice changed the game for chemistry, and earned Frances Arnold the Nobel Prize prize in 2018. She called it “directed evolution.” Today, thousands of labs use her methods to coax enzymes into doing things no one ever thought of. She joins Host Flora Lichtman to talk about where she sees this approach going in the future, and the personal evolution that brought her into science. Guest: Dr. Frances Arnold is the Linus Pauling Professor of Chemical Engineering, Bioengineering and Biochemistry at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, California.Transcripts for each episode are available within 1-3 days at sciencefriday.com. Over the weekend, President Trump launched Operation Epic Fury, the most ambitious US military operation in decades. In the wake of the 2025 12-Day War, Iran again worked to reconstitute its nuclear weapons program and its missile arsenal. These threats, in combination with the massacre of tens of thousands of Iranians in January, brought the US to the brink of war. The operation has targeted IRGC command, missile defense systems, and senior regime leadership, including the Supreme Leader and his successors. Secretary Hegseth has stated that nothing is off the table, including the possible deployment of ground forces, an option potentially necessary to secure Iran's nuclear materials. Our guest, David Albright, warns that failing to secure those materials will ultimately undermine the operation's success. In the weeks ahead, what indicators will signal whether the regime is truly at risk of collapse? Beyond military targets, what political considerations must be addressed to ensure lasting success once combat operations cease?David Albright is the founder and President of the non-profit Institute for Science and International Security in Washington, D.C. He has written numerous assessments on secret nuclear weapons programs throughout the world, has authored or co-authored nine books and briefed policymakers on non-proliferation policy making.Read the transcript here.Subscribe to our Substack here.

Sarah and Susie are participating in an unconventional macabre game when they predict which celebrities will die this year, but Sarah argues it's a "celebration of life." We debate the Tourette's Syndrome scandal at the BAFTAs and consider what the appropriate way to handle it was. Susie shares a story of a woman who's AI chatbot started claiming she would meet her soulmate at a particular time and place, and, spoiler alert, she didn't, but now she's raising alarm bells about the persuasive nature of AI and LLMs. We discuss the Olympic skater known as the Quad God and his disappointing performance in Madrid, and we learn the science of "choking" when put under pressure and techniques to help prevent the "yips," or choking when stressed. Susie describes The Queen of Chess documentary, the sexism in the sport, the little girl who beat Bobby Fisher's 30-year record, and why grown men are petrified of losing to a girl.Brain Candy Podcast Website - https://thebraincandypodcast.com/Brain Candy Podcast Book Recommendations - https://thebraincandypodcast.com/books/Brain Candy Podcast Merchandise - https://thebraincandypodcast.com/candy-store/Brain Candy Podcast Candy Club - https://thebraincandypodcast.com/product/candy-club/Brain Candy Podcast Sponsor Codes - https://thebraincandypodcast.com/support-us/Brain Candy Podcast Social Media & Platforms:Brain Candy Podcast LIVE Interactive Trivia Nights - https://www.youtube.com/@BrainCandyPodcast/streamsBrain Candy Podcast Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/braincandypodcastHost Susie Meister Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/susiemeisterHost Sarah Rice Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/imsarahriceBrain Candy Podcast on X: https://www.x.com/braincandypodBrain Candy Podcast Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/braincandy (JOIN FREE - TONS OF REALITY TV CONTENT)Brain Candy Podcast Sponsors, partnerships, & Products that we love:Get $30 off your first box - PLUS free Croissants for life - when you go to https://wildgrain.com/braincandy to start your subscription today! This episode is sponsored by Betterhelp. We're doing our first early-release episode to talk about the shocking ending of the US Half Marathon Championships on Sunday. As Jess McClain was charging to victory, with Emma Grace Hurley and Ednah Kurgat poised to make Team USA with her, all 3 athletes were directed off course by a police escort motorcycle, the official lead vehicle, and a media motorcycle. The disgrace is what happened next. USATF (the governing body for US running) responded by shifting the blame to local organizers and failing to rectify the incompetence that created this situation. If USATF fails to act on behalf of athletes, the leadership has to change.Plus, there were so many other amazing topics for episode 300! Other topics: a discussion on elite athlete training in cycling and what that might mean for training theory for everyone else, a new gel we love, a cool study on optimism and longevity, “gravel” shoes, and a question about taking bicarb at night. The UK government has declared 2026, the National Year of Reading. The numbers suggest that reading needs all the public relations it can get. Under a third of school children say they read for pleasure and the number going on to read English Literature at University has shrunk by over a third in the last fifteen years. Their parents are not doing much better, with some surveys suggesting that any where up to half of adults have not read a single book in the last year. So, how can the case for the value of reading and the simple pleasure of picking up a book cut through? Tom Sutcliffe chairs Radio 4's discussion programme which starts the week. His guests are:Margaret Busby was Britain's first Black woman publisher who has enjoyed a 50 year career at the centre of cultural life and the book trade. Her new book Part of the Story: Writings from Half a Century features her own literary output from between 1966 and 2023. Sarah Dillon, Professor at the University of Cambridge, has looked at the question 'what are you reading?' The books we encounter shape the choices we make and when it comes to scientists, it appears that ideas from imaginative literature influence their thinking. As winter settles over the northern hemisphere of our planet, many kinds of creatures are moving toward hibernation. True hibernation is much more than just a deep, prolonged sleep. In fact, many animals that are popularly believed to hibernate, like bears, are not true hibernators. A wintering bear's body temperature seldom falls below 86 degrees, so bears are easily awakened. True hibernators actually need several hours to awaken. The ground squirrel is a true hibernator. Its hibernation pattern is triggered by an internal clock that causes hormone changes. These changes not only lower the squirrel's temperature, metabolic breathing and heart rate, but also changes the way its nervous system and cell membranes operate. If the squirrel's nervous system and cell membrane operation were not modified for hibernation, the other changes would kill it.Once the squirrel is in true hibernation, its body temperature drops to about 35 F, its heart rate drops from 350 beats per minute to about 3 beats per minute, and it will breathe only once every several minutes. The vast and complex internal changes that must take place in hibernation, affecting the function of every cell, show us that hibernation is an ability that was built into many creatures. If all these changes were due to genetic accidents, there would be no hibernating animals today. They would all have died trying to find the right combination of internal changes to allow hibernation to occur.Psalm 121:2-4"My help cometh from the Lord, which made heaven and earth. He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: he that keepeth thee will not slumber. Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep."Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, I see Your love for all that You have made in the ways that You have provided for good of all Your creatures. If You would be their Father through such tender loving care, how much more would You be my Father for the sake of Your Son Jesus Christ! Amen.REF.: Fleming, Carol B. How do animals hibernate? The American Robin and the Baltimore Oriole both have cheery, upbeat songs. At first, you might think there's no way to tell these two singers apart. But there are a couple of differences. American Robins usually have a longer song, while Baltimore Orioles usually stop after a phrase or two. Plus, Baltimore Orioles sound sweeter and more melodic than American Robins, who can come across a little screechy at times. What is God? In Week 2 of The Science of Mind Journey, Rev. Lee Wolak dives deep into the spiritual understanding of God beyond religion, dogma, and outdated theology. Based on the teachings of Ernest Holmes and the foundational principles of Science of Mind, this talk explores God as Infinite Intelligence, Universal Law, Divine Mind, and the Creative Principle operating in and through all life. If you've ever questioned traditional religious concepts or wondered how God, consciousness, manifestation, and spiritual law actually work together, this teaching will expand your awareness. Discover how the idea of God as impersonal, omnipresent Spirit shifts your prayer life, your mindset, and your ability to consciously create. This is practical spirituality for everyday living; blending metaphysics, higher consciousness, and a grounded Zen perspective.
