Met de voordracht van Stephen Miran als opvolger van de eerder opgestapte Adriana Kugler als bestuurslid van de Fed, wordt de Amerikaanse centrale bank door president Donald Trump steeds meer naar zijn eigen hand gezet. ‘Het is hem gelukt’, zegt macro-econoom Arnoud Boot. Wie is deze man? Stephen Miran is eigenlijk een uitstekende econoom. Hij promoveerde aan Harvard University – dezelfde universiteit die zwaar onder vuur ligt van Donald Trump – nota bene bij Martin Feldstein, een van de grootste economen van de vorige eeuw en waarschijnlijk de belangrijkste die nooit de Nobelprijs kreeg. Miran zat al in het Witte Huis, omdat hij voorzitter was van de Council of Economic Advisers. Nu neemt hij tijdelijk plaats in het bestuur van de Federal Reserve, op de stoel van Adriana Kugler, die begin deze maand opstapte. Het is een tijdelijke benoeming. Maakt dat wat uit? Op zichzelf zegt dat weinig. Maar vooraanstaande economen dachten altijd dat het voor Trump erg moeilijk zou zijn om – naast het Hooggerechtshof – ook de Fed naar zijn hand te zetten. Toch lijkt hij daarin te slagen. Dan mag het wel een tijdelijke benoeming zijn, maar Miran heeft zich een vaste rol binnen de Fed weten te verwerven. En zodra de huidige voorzitter Powell vertrekt, kan Trump de hele Federal Reserve naar zijn hand zetten. En dat zal hij ook doen ook. Wat heeft Miran gezegd over de renteverlagingen waar Trump zo op aandringt? Vorig jaar verklaarde Miran dat de geplande renteverlagingen van de Fed niet gepast waren. Ook was hij tegen het stimuleringspakket van voormalig president Joe Biden – ironisch genoeg iets waar Trump in essentie juist vóór zou zijn. Maar deze standpunten, gebaseerd op overtuiging en analyse, worden nu losgelaten. Het enige wat nog telt is hoe je bij Trump een wit voetje kan halen. En dat zie je overal gebeuren – tot in het extreme. We zagen hetzelfde gebeuren bij Ursula von der Leyen, voorzitter van de Europese Commissie, die terugkwam met misschien wel het minst slechte handelsakkoord. Maar als wij onze rug recht houden, dan maakt Trump geen schijn van kans. Wat had er dan moeten gebeuren? Als de Europese Unie de handen ineen had geslagen met Canada, dan was er een krachtig front gevormd – een front waar ook Zwitserland en andere landen zich bij hadden kunnen aansluiten. Dan wordt er tegengewictht geboden aan iets wat dit gedrag van Trump gewoon is, namelijk fascisme. Dit is een leider die door middel van intimidatie in combinatie met geld alles naar zijn hand kan zetten. Dat is ook deels de reden waarom Trump de hele cryptosector heeft omarmd. Daar wordt gigantisch veel geld gecreëerd, en die sector is bereid zich volledig in te zetten voor Trumps agenda. Voor hem doen tegenstanders er simpelweg niet toe. We zullen bereid moeten zijn om offers te brengen en op te staan. Maar dat lukt alleen als we de handen ineenslaan. Mais déjà, plusieurs voix s'élèvent pour critiquer l'accord obtenu entre la Commission européenne et la Maison Blanche. Ancien ministre de l'Économie, Thierry Breton considère que cet accord est "déséquilibré", et qu'il a été imposé par Washington, alors même que l'Europe est le premier partenaire commercial des Etats-Unis. Ce week-end, l'ancien Premier ministre Michel Barnier a vivement critiqué Ursula Von Der Leyen, qualifiant la négociation d'"immense défaite". Parmi les secteurs les plus touchés, les produits pharmaceutiques (120 milliards d'euros d'exportation en 2024), et les vins et spiritueux (8 milliards) s'inquiètent de leur avenir. Le secteur du luxe devrait s'en sortir un peu mieux, en répercutant la hausse des droits de douane sur les prix. Quant à l'industrie aéronautique, elle a bénéficié d'une exemption de droits de douane.Autre victime de la guerre commerciale, l'industrie automobile est en berne : fin juillet, le groupe franco-italien Stellantis (Peugeot, Fiat, Chrysler…) a annoncé une perte de 2,3 milliards d'euros sur le premier semestre, notamment en raison d'une baisse des ventes de véhicules en Europe et aux Etats-Unis. En Allemagne, l'automobile est aussi en crise. Mercedes a annoncé fin juillet une chute de 69% de son bénéfice au deuxième trimestre, et Porsche de 91% par rapport à la même période en 2024. Le marché du véhicule haut de gamme allemand, qui se tournait avant tout vers la Chine, est confronté à un repli des consommateurs sur leur propre marché : ces derniers privilégient désormais les marques chinoises plus abordables et connectées, à l'image de la berline Xiaomi SU7, trois fois moins chère qu'une Porsche Taycan.Et les Chinois ne se contentent pas d'envahir le marché de l'automobile européen. Ils investissent également dans les autres secteurs clés. Fin mai, le groupe chinois Wanrun a ainsi repris Safra, le seul constructeur français d'autobus à hydrogène, qui avait été placé en redressement judiciaire depuis février. Le consortium chinois a repris pour 7 millions d'euros l'ensemble des activités du groupe ainsi que 120 salariés (sur 169). Ce rachat n'avait pas plu à tout le monde : "Au moment où le gouvernement en appelle à la souveraineté industrielle et veut renforcer les territoires d'industrie, (…) une nouvelle erreur se profile à Albi si le tribunal de commerce faisait le choix du groupe asiatique", avait pointé Jean-Louis Chauzy, le Président du Conseil Economique et social de Midi-Pyrénées. Although European leaders were unhappy with the deal, they accepted it to avoid a full-blown trade war, with critics like former Belgian Prime Minister Guy Verhofstadt calling it disastrous and poorly negotiated.  Jimmy argues that Europe weakened its own position by severing energy ties with Russia and becoming dependent on U.S. energy and defense, effectively allowing Trump to dictate the terms. La presión internacional y doméstica ha aumentado en las últimas semanas para que el Gobierno ucraniano aplique las esperadas reformas en políticas anticorrupción, tras la aprobación de una medida que amenazaba la independencia de las agencias anticorrupción. Volodimir Zelenski estrecha el cerco contra la corrupción tras la presión internacional. El Parlamento de Ucrania vota hoy la contrarreforma sobre la independencia de las agencias anticorrupción del país después de que los mismos diputados centralizaran esos poderes a la Fiscalía hace solo una semana. Ahora el presidente ucraniano da marcha atrás siguiendo la petición directa de Ursula von der Leyen -que lo llamó el pasado domingo-, las manifestaciones en Kyiv y la decisión de la Comisión Europea de bloquear 1.500 millones de euros de ayuda. “El debate sobre los movimientos efectivos hacia la Unión Europea y la reforma anticorrupción está ahora definitivamente en crisis en Ucrania”, dice Kateryna Ryzhenko, directora adjunta de Transparencia Internacional Ucrania, al micrófono de RFI. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Adam McManus Seven Evangelicals in Columbia killed by armed group Seven bodies of Evangelical Christians, and a relative to one of the victims, were found on July 1st in a mass, shallow grave in Guaviare, Colombia, reports International Christian Concern. In April, the Frente Armando Ríos, an illegal armed group that has been known to restrict freedom of religion, summoned the eight victims to interrogate them about a rival armed group. The eight people were reported missing shortly after the interrogation.  It was especially tragic because the victims were members of the Evangelical Alliance of Colombia and the Foursquare Gospel Church who were providing humanitarian aid in the area. Trump's massive trade deal with European Union Ahead of the August 1st deadline for the European Union to agree to a trade deal with the United States, President Donald Trump hammered out a major trade deal with the European Union, comprised of 27 countries, that he announced Sunday afternoon in Edinburgh, Scotland, reports RedState.com. Before the meeting with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Trump pledged to change what he characterized as “a very one-sided transaction, very unfair to the United States.” TRUMP: “We've reached a deal. It's a giant deal with lots of countries. The European Union is going to agree to purchase from the United States $750 billion worth of energy. They are going to agree to invest into the United States $600 billion more than they're investing already. So, they're investing a large amount of money, but they're going to invest an additional $600 billion. “They're agreeing to open up their countries to trade at zero tariff.  So, that's a very big factor. And they're agreeing to purchase a vast amount of military equipment. We are agreeing that the tariff straight across for automobiles will be a straight-across tariff of 15%. “I think it's the biggest deal ever made. Thank you very much.” The zero tariff was applicable to all aircraft and component parts, certain chemicals, certain generic drugs, semiconductor equipment, some agricultural products, natural resources and critical raw materials. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen agreed that it was an impressive deal which was tough to negotiate, noted the Associated Press. VON DER LEYEN: “We have a trade deal between the two largest economies in the world. And it's a big deal. It's a huge deal. It will bring stability. It will bring predictability. That's very important for our businesses on both sides of the Atlantic. “The investments Mr. President just described -- that are going to go to the United States, and the purchases over there. “The European market is open. It's 450 million people. So, it's a good deal. It's a huge deal.” TRUMP: “Yeah.” VON DER LEYEN:  “with tough negotiations. I knew it at the beginning, and it was indeed very tough, but we came to good conclusions with both sides. TRUMP: “We did.” VON DER LEYEN: “So again, congratulations and many thanks!” Trump didn't give a specific amount that the EU countries would spend on military equipment, saying that there wasn't a firm number in the deal, but that it would be "hundreds of billions of dollars' worth of military equipment." The agreement for the European Union to purchase $750 billion worth of energy from the United States changes the state of political affairs globally since it makes European Union countries less dependent on Russia for energy, and takes lots of money out of the pockets of Vladimir Putin and Russian and Ukrainian oligarchs. Von Der Leyen said the deal was necessary to "rebalance" trade between the European Union and the United States. Trans-identified male athletes have stolen 1,941 gold medals Trans-identified male athletes have stolen over 1,900 gold medals from women and girls, according to a recent report released by Concerned Women for America, reports The Christian Post. The conservative advocacy group's report, released earlier this month, compiled data of recorded instances dating back to the 1980s of men competing in female-only events. In addition to the 1,941 gold medals won by male athletes in women-only competitions, they also claimed nearly $500,000 in prize money by competing in women's sports.  In California alone, over 521 women and girls were forced to settle for silver medals after being defeated by male athletes. According to the CWA report, men identifying as women have competed in more than 10,067 female sport events, both amateur and professional. The report also listed the national governing bodies that presided over competitions where men defeated female athletes, including the National Collegiate Athletic Association, multiple categories within the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee, and several state intercollegiate athletic associations. Penny Nance, president of Concerned Women for America, said, “For too long, trans-identifying males have displaced, disrupted, and injured women and girls in female sports categories. “Our research reveals the shocking truth of the matter — over 1,900 women have come in second place to men who claim to be women. This is outrageously unjust. Women and girls must have sex-protected athletics under Title IX.”  In Matthew 19:4, Jesus asked, ““Haven't you read that at the beginning the Creator ‘made them male and female.'?” Michigan madman stabbed 11 Walmart shoppers On Saturday afternoon, 11 people were stabbed in a Michigan Walmart before the madman was detained by a few Marines and bystanders, reports One America News. The suspect, identified as 42-year-old Bradford James Gille, is expected to face terrorism and assault charges. Gille allegedly entered the Walmart in Traverse City, Michigan, at around 4:10 p.m. on Saturday, and attacked shoppers and one employee with a “folding knife” at around 4:45 p.m. in the checkout area of the store. Law enforcement responded within three minutes of an emergency 911 call, while a group of bystanders detained Gille in the parking lot. Specifically, 39-year-old Matt Kolakowski, a former U.S. Marine, had stopped at the Walmart for weekend supplies while on a family vacation when the stabbing occurred. He thought to himself, “Well, I don't got no weapon, so what am I going to do?' So, I just grabbed an empty grocery cart and just took off after him as hard as I could.” The suspect, who was overheard describing people in Walmart as evil, stabbed a man and an elderly woman while fleeing from the store. Kolakowski was eventually able to ram the suspect with the shopping cart. A pursuit ensued into the parking lot. Another Marine, Derrick Perry, who had just come from the firing range, still had his gun on his hip. When he pulled it on the stabber, the suspect dropped the knife. Planned Parenthood closes 5 California abortion mills And finally, the Planned Parenthood abortion business is closing more centers – with another 5 closing in northern California thanks to the defunding bill President Trump signed that took $300 million in taxpayer money away from the abortion giant, reports Life News. The “One Big Beautiful Bill,” signed by President Donald Trump earlier this month, prohibits Medicaid reimbursements for nonprofit health clinics that kill babies and receive more than $800,000 in federal funding annually, effectively cutting off federal support for California's 114 Planned Parenthood abortion mills. With President Trump's tariffs putting a sharp focus on China, most will likely be closely watching negotiations between the two as they look to avoid a full-blown trade war. In the meantime, the EU also has its eye on China, as Beijing's wide trade surplus with the bloc and its backing of Moscow are key concerns. Estados Unidos y la Unión Europea alcanzaron por fin un acuerdo comercial este domingo. El acuerdo no es ni mucho menos el mejor, pero evita una guerra comercial que sería devastadora para ambas partes. El comercio transatlántico es muy voluminoso. La UE es el principal socio de EEUU más allá de Norteamérica. Entre ambas orillas del Atlántico cada día se comercia con bienes y servicios por por valor de más de 5.000 millones de dólares. Era, como vemos, mucho dinero el que estaba en juego, por eso Donald Trump se encargó de anunciar personalmente el pacto, que se fundamenta sobre un arancel base del 15% para productos europeos, incluyendo los automóviles, la maquinaria y los productos farmacéuticos. A cambio, la UE se compromete a comprar energía estadounidense (gas y petróleo) por valor de 750.000 millones de dólares e invertir 600.000 millones en EEUU. El acuerdo se cerró en Escocia durante una reunión entre Trump y la presidenta de la Comisión Europea, Ursula von der Leyen, que calificó el acuerdo como una "excelente noticia" que aporta certidumbre en medio de la incertidumbre. A los exportadores europeos, especialmente alemanes e italianos, les permite tomar aire ya que exportan mucho a Estados Unidos. Podría haber sido mejor. Un 15% es un arancel muy elevado, el triple de cómo estaba hace sólo unos meses, pero es lo más lejos que pudo llegar la Comisión Europea. Este 15% podría, además, convertirse en el arancel estándar para otros socios comerciales de Estados Unidos. Colocar el listón tan alto reducirá sin duda el comercio internacional, pero no lo detendrá por completo. Hay, eso sí, algunas excepciones como los aranceles del 50% al acero y aluminio, aunque con una serie cuotas para mantenerlos algo más bajos en ciertos casos. Por otro lado, han acordado aranceles cero en productos estratégicos como las aeronaves, los productos químicos, algunos productos agrícolas y los semiconductores. El plan de Bruselas es ir añadiendo nuevos productos a esa lista poco a poco. El acuerdo ha sido bien recibido por el mercado financiero ya que aleja una confrontación comercial a gran escala, pero impactará negativamente en el PIB de la UE. Se estima que se comerá aproximadamente un 0,3% este año, aunque afectará más a Alemania que a otros países. En EEUU no todos lo celebran. Los compromisos europeos en energía y defensa ya estaban en marcha y las inversiones de 600.000 millones son muy vagas, tanto en plazos como en detalles. Por lo demás, no aborda algunas de las quejas que el propio Trump manifestó en abril como los impuestos digitales, las regulaciones a las tecnológicas, la normativa alimentaria o los precios de los medicamentos. Al final, los aranceles han quedado como un simple impuesto a los consumidores y las empresas estadounidenses, que tendrán que pagar sensiblemente más por casi todo lo que viene de Europa. El pacto requiere aún aprobación de los 27 miembros de la UE y podría violar algunas reglas de la OMC. Para algunos, es toda una capitulación europea. Aceptan un mal acuerdo para evitar represalias cuando lo cierto es que Trump ha demostrado que sabe recoger cable cuando le toca tal y como se ha visto con los aranceles que impuso a China. Los europeos podrían haber tensado más la cuerda, pero ni siquiera se lo han planteado. "Nous avons trouvé un accord", s'est félicité le président américain, n'hésitant pas à le qualifier de "plus grand jamais conclu en matière de commerce". Ursula von der Leyen a salué, pour sa part, un "bon accord" qui devrait "apporter de la stabilité".Au cœur de l'accord : les droits de douane. Washington s'engage à limiter à 15 % les taxes sur les produits européens importés, contre les 30 % initialement envisagés par Donald Trump. En contrepartie, Bruxelles renonce à toute riposte tarifaire et s'engage à injecter des sommes colossales dans l'économie américaine : 750 milliards de dollars d'achats d'énergie sur trois ans, ainsi que 650 milliards d'investissements, notamment dans l'implantation d'usines.
