William Kent Krueger – Kent to his friends – was thrown out of college during his radical student years, and he says it was the making of him as a writer. Having recently published his eighteenth mystery in the Cork O'Connor series – the last nine of them all New York Times best sellers – we could hardly disagree. Hi there, I'm your host Jenny Wheeler, and in Binge Reading today Kent talks about the secret behind his remarkable success as a writer – and I bet it's not what you think it is, why he is fascinated by father-son stories, and how he sees himself more as a storyteller than a writer. We've got three eBook copies of Kent's latest best seller – Lightning Strike – to give away to three lucky readers in our Mysteries Alive Giveaway. Introducing William Kent Krueger - master storyteller But now, here's Kent. Jenny Wheeler: Hi there Kent and welcome to the show. It's great to have you with us. William Kent Krueger: What a pleasure to be with you, Jenny. Thank you for the invitation to be a part of this. Jenny Wheeler: You are about to publish Lightning Strike, book 18 in the Cork O'Connor series. In fact, by the time this goes to air, Lightning Strike will be out. William Kent Krueger - the Cork O'Connor series keeps getting better You're an award-winning New York Times and bestselling writer, and the critics agree that even at book 18, you're still fresh and unmissable. Lightning Strike has a twist of its own because it's what we call a prequel . You take us right back to the beginning of the story and introduce us to your protagonist as Cork O'Connor a boy, not even a man at this stage. Now, that's an interesting twist. Tell us what inspired you to do that. William Kent Krueger: Cork has a significant history that I have alluded to many times in the stories, but I've never gone back to explore that history, and particularly the relationship Cork had with his father. For those who are not familiar with my series, Cork O'Connor was at one point the sheriff of the fictional Tamarack County in Minnesota. When Cork was a boy, his father was also sheriff of Tamarack County, and a man who clearly greatly influenced his son. I wanted to be able to go back and explore more deeply that significant relationship, and also the relationship Cork had with his mother and several of the other characters who are recurring in the stories, and who have influenced Cork dramatically across the course of his life. Lightning Strike can be read as standalone of first in series Jenny Wheeler: I notice that in the past when readers have asked you, where should I start the series or does it matter where I begin them,
Whether it's the pressure from family to finish school ‘on time', the pressure you might be putting on yourself, or the expectation that you should be tough ‘enough'. Mental health and one's overall wellbeing can be so overlooked when it's put under a timeline. There is no set timeline on getting well. When that's understood, real change is able to happen.Robert McCaslin, director of business development for Alta Loma and founder of Sunlight Sober Living, dealt with addiction and mental health struggles from an early age. Not only was the transition into college hard enough, but everything that he was going through at the time, weighed him down even more and completely changed his outlook on life. Robert had tried to go to treatment many times throughout college always with big expectations for himself. It wasn't until his senior year that he decided to put a hold on his degree and take a year off to really commit to treatment. After taking a side job at a sober home he had an amazing experience at, instead of going back to his degree right away, he went off to find a huge passion working in recovery and mental health, and now finds great joy in his work.On this episode of Success is Subjective, Robert joins Joanna to share his rocky college experience and how he came to be vulnerable in his challenges, coming to find a passion through his own struggles. Robert's story shows how important it is to always value yourself before focusing on any academic or societal rating. Listen in for insight on Robert's journey as he finds the importance of mental health and now uses that to help individuals and their families find recovery themselves, from their issues with mental health and addiction. What You Will LearnCollege was never a question growing upThe very difficult experience with losing a close friend in Robert's senior yearThe mental health struggles Robert tried to ignore in collegeThe LEP programWhat caused Robert to drop out with only a quarter left for his degreeWhere Robert found himself after becoming soberYour health matters. While “cheap and cheerful” might have been an apt description of Australian wine 20 years ago when Yellowtail was the #1 wine brand in the US, “Made our Way” is the new Australian marketing campaign that emphasizes the complexities and innovation of the modern Australian wine industry. Aaron Ridgway, Regional GM of the Americas for Wine Australia, tells us about how they are “complexifying” and “re-mystifying” Australian wine, showcasing the substantial innovation, 100 different grape varieties, and extreme regional variations in growing climates. Welcome to today’s episode which is related to something many of us dread - the annual performance review process! Oh, the hours I spent on this in my UN career. And, to be frank, not always convinced that the value of the process compared to the time I and everybody else invested in it. So, although I very much agreed with the theory of the performance review (I was working in Human Resources after all!) – I must say that I didn’t personally look forward to the process. Having to evaluate myself. Try to write about how brilliant I thought I’d done through the year. Not exactly my cup of tea!So, I’m happy to let you know that today’s episode is not really about the performance review process itself. It’s about seeing the performance review process from a different angle. You can find the show notes for today’s episode at www.Barbarakandersen.com/15.So, you should no longer see the performance review as a stressor in the middle of other urgent work. Instead, let the performance review serve as your annual prompt to stay on track with your career development and ensure that you take time to take action and take charge of your career. I actually already touched on this in episode 9, the one called “Why You Always Want to Have an Updated CV!” (You can find that episode at www.barbarakandersen.com/9 ).3 ways to get much more out of the performance review process!#1 Use it as an Opportunity to Go into “Career Mode”You’re busy. It feels like there’s never really enough time to think about your career, your professional development, networking and looking for jobs. But for the performance review process you’re required to sit down and update your goals. You have to review your results and your competencies. You’re forced to think and write about what you’ve done well during the year. And you should welcome that as an opportunity. You may not necessarily expect big results from the performance review itself, but I say it’s actually good that you’re forced to do this because you need to think about it for you. So, take this opportunity to go into “career mode” and line out: Everything you’ve achieved and all you’ve learned during the yearThe results you’ve createdThe competencies you’ve displayed or developedThe skills you’ve displayed or developedWhile you’re in this “career mode”, think also about:What’s the next thing you’d like to do? What would you like your next job to be? What are the skills you’d like to develop further?Would you like to diversify?Would you like to go to the next level in terms of expertise – or in terms of authority and responsibility?Would you like to develop by moving to the field? Or to HQ or a regional setting? Is there a particular part of the world you’re eager to experience? Would you be interested to see what difference your experience could make in an NGO setting?Or would you like to go home and use your expertise in a government context? You should of course talk with your supervisor about as many of these things as you feel comfortable with. Seek his or her support for your development and your next steps. If you don’t think this is feasible, think about how else this can be done? Who else will/can support you?Think about what you will do in order to move in that direction.Read the full show notes at www.barbarakandersen.com/15.

The Hearing Matters Podcast discusses hearing technology (more commonly known as hearing aids), best practices, and a growing national epidemic - Hearing Loss. The show is hosted by father and son - Blaise Delfino, M.S. - HIS and Dr. Gregory Delfino, CCC-A. Blaise Delfino and Dr. Gregory Delfino treat patients with hearing loss, tinnitus, and Central Auditory Processing Disorder at Audiology Services, located in Bethlehem, Nazareth, and East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania. On this episode we interview Moe Jerant, drummer for The Large Flowerheads! Moe has been a professional musician for over 20 years. She began playing the drums when she was gifted a snare drum by a few of her schoolmates in 7th grade! Who knew that years later Moe would be the drummer for one of the most popular 60's cover bands in The Lehigh Valley and surrounding areas! During this episode you will learn: The importance of getting your hearing tested on an annual basis Why musicians need to get their hearing tested at least 1x/yearThe evolution of hearing technology as described by a long-term hearing aid user, Moe Jerant Echoic memory and hearing loss, as it relates to musicians Treating your hearing loss sooner than later How hearing aids increase speech intelligibility and understanding Moe has been a patient of Audiology Services for over 15 years! Dr. Delfino and Cheryl Delfino, B.A. - HIS fit Moe with her first set of hearing instruments in 2005. To date, Moe currently wears her third set of hearing aids from Audiology Services and has experienced positive patient outcomes. Moe is extremely motivated to continue to increase her overall speech understanding and decrease her listening effort. This is one of the many reasons why she loves her hearing aids. Being a professional musician means that Moe is exposed to constant noise on a consistent basis. Between band rehearsal and live shows, it's essential she continue to protect her residual hearing; we want to maintain the hearing sensitivity she does have. That being said, when Moe is rehearsing or performing, she uses musician in-the-ear monitors! Now, when she's done playing a gig, she doesn't have that ringing in her ears when she gets home (commonly referred to as temporary threshold shift). Too often we speak with professional musicians who don't perform as much (some don't perform at all anymore) because they present with hearing loss. At Audiology Services, it is our mission to encourage musicians to get their hearing tested on an annual basis! A musician's sense of hearing is like a canvas to an artist - essential. Practice healthy hearing habits, wear hearing protection when you go see your favorite band perform live, and don't listen to your music turned all the way up (unless of course it's The Large Flowerheads) - Kidding! Turn the volume down, seriously. We Heard You Have Some Questions. It’s IMPOSSIBLE to bloom without the rain…2020. What a year it was for all of us! A year where collectively experienced new and bizarre things, but also a year that was filled with our own stories, moments… our personal memoirs. I had wanted it to be the year I bloomed. Little did I know, I had to feel the rain first. In this episode I share some of the key lessons that I learned from my year that was.Why I needed to acknowledge and embody the hard things last yearThe importance of finding your support when you are in those heavy spacesWhat happened that time I just couldn’t get out of bedThe gift for my children in learning language around emotionsWhy it’s OK to be done with the darkness, for nowHow I am - we all are - richer now... our fabric will be forever stitched a little differently.Links:The Conversations With Lisa playlistReady for Change is back early 2021! It's a word that strikes fear into the heart of teachers everywhere. Okay, maybe just me.... assessment.Yes, assessment. This is a word that used to totally send me running for the hills. I thought it was a trap for music teachers. Like, how on earth are we supposed to collect data and give tests for a thing that is so un-test-able?Well, that's what I used to think. I used to think that assessment was a gotcha, or this impossible task that required all sorts of prepping and planning and extra stuff... but it's not. It's an integral, informative, and pretty simple part of our entire teaching process.Today on the podcast, we're talking about REAL assessment in the music room. Here's what I'm sharing on this week's podcast:Why you aren't “behind” this yearThe #1 thing you need for assessmentHow to write your lesson objectives for student successThe keys to making it a part of your active music making classroomToday's episode of The Anacrusic Podcast is sponsored by my FREE workshop, The Ultimate Music Lesson Planning Roadmap. The statewide seven-day average for positive tests is now at 12.7 percent. In the Blue Ridge Health District, there are another 77 cases reported today. That’s 25 from Albemarle, 17 from Charlottesville, 13 from Louisa, 12 from Fluvanna, six from Greene and four from Nelson.Source: Virginia Department of Health *The sister of a man killed by Richmond police in May 2019 has announced a bid for Virginia Governor. “Hello Virginians, my name is Princess Blanding, and today I am grateful to announce my candidacy for Governor of Virginia as a nominee of the newly-formed Liberation Party,” Blanding said in a video posted to her Facebook page. Her brother Marcus-David Peters was shot by police in the evening of May 14, 2019 on I-95 after a taser blast did not subdue him. Richmond’s Commonwealth Attorney issued a ten-page report in November which cleared officers. Blanding is running to push for further reform. “Since the murder of my brother, Marcus-David Peters, I stood alongside community members and fellow organizers as we fought tirelessly for changes that would put community care and safety first for all Virginians.”Blanding joins a race with several Democrats and Republicans who have already announced. On the Democrat side, that includes former Delegate Jennifer Carroll Foy and Senator Jennifer McClellan as well as former Governor Terry McAuliffe. On the Republican side, Delegate Kirk Cox and Senator Amanda Chase have announced their candidacies. *A sinkhole opened up Monday in the median on U.S. 29 north of Seminole Trail, and crews with the Virginia Department of Transportation temporarily closed the left lanes of both northbound and southbound traffic. They used large stones known as rip-rap to repair damage caused. This is an issue VDOT also dealt with in the same general area in 2007 when a leaking drainpipe undermined the integrity of the earth underneath the roadway. (June 2007 Charlottesville Tomorrow article)*A familiar face returned to the Board of Trustees of the Jefferson-Madison Regional Library on Monday. Tony Townsend of Albemarle County was introduced by Board President Marcia McDuffie of Nelson County. “Tony was on the Board of Trustees from 2003 to 2011 and served as president for two years,” McDuffie said. “After that he was on the Friends of the Library Board as well and served as president there.” McDuffie also pointed out that Townsend is the administrator of a website called the Patrick O’Brian Compendium, which tracks the work of the author of the Master and Commander series. As 2020 winds down, JMRL director David Plunkett gave an update on the system’s transition to its Tier 3 level of service, which allows for in-person browsing by appointment only. The library briefly closed under Tier 5 in mid-march before gradually restoring service. But JMRL offers more than just books. “Since July 1, since the beginning of the new fiscal year, JMRL has put on 295 virtual programs that have been attended by 5,333 people,” Plunkett said. “Circulation for JRML materials since July 1 through the end of November [has been] 424,677 items.”Plunkett said 43 percent of circulation has been of digital materials. The system has also helped to provide Internet service to those who don’t have it at home. “Since the pandemic began, a little over 42,000 people have signed on to use JMRL wi-fi,” Plunkett said. “42,000 people.” Slowly people are beginning to return to in-person service by appointment. “Since September and through the 23rd of this month, Central Library has had 66 appointments made, Gordon Avenue has had 39 appointments made, Northside has had 175 appointments made, Crozet 744, Scottsville 38, Nelson 790, Louisa 464 and Greene 590,” Plunkett said. “So if you think of those as being in groups of either 1, 3, or 5 at a time to keep distances safe, it’s really been a lot of work to get there.”Plunkett also talked about the financial aspects of COVID for the library. They’ve spent about $50,000 this quarter on PPE and other supplies. There are also no fines at the moment, and fines help pay for new equipment. “No revenue effectively is coming in to the equipment fund right now,” Plunkett said. “JMRL has not bought any of the equipment that made it into this year’s budget except for COVID-related expenses basically in the first six months of this fiscal year.”Plunkett and trustees have been meeting with localities about the next fiscal year budget. He described the meeting with Charlottesville officials as “honest.”“Charlottesville as you might have seen in the news is having some issues with the meals and lodging tasks, nobody expected this pandemic to go so long so the revenue that has come in what they were expecting for this current fiscal year,” Plunkett said. “So they are meeting ends as best as they can and as they think about next year they’re really looking at flat funding for most of their agencies and partners.”Calendar 2021 is the centennial of public library service in Charlottesville. Plunkett said JMRL will work with the Albemarle Charlottesville Historical Society on an exhibit. “We’re also working with filmmaker Lorenzo Dickerson on a short film about the history of library service here in the region tentatively called Free and Open,” Plunkett said. “We hope to explore the growth of the institution locally and to confront and discuss the history of the segregationist past of the institution.” Plunkett and Dickerson will discuss this project on January 27 at a panel held by the ACHS. In this episode, we learn about the wine auction market from Jaime Ritchie, Worldwide Head of Wine at Sotheby’s, one of the leaders in the space. We discuss how wine auctions work, how finding in-demand wines to sell is the current challenge, and the increasing digitization and diversification of the space. From moving to more online auctions, younger buyers from more diverse backgrounds and geographies, to how tariffs and taxes and reshaped the wine auction landscape, this episode is a must-listen if you have any interest in the world of fine and rare wines. You know when you meet someone and in the first five minutes you're like, 'oh yeah, we're gonna be friends'? That's Jamie Trull. (by the way, her name is not pronounced 'troll' and I know that…but listening to this in playback I totally pronounced it like that! Why?!) Anyway. Jamie is a corporate CFO and CPA-turned entrepreneur. After working for years for corporations with 90 hour work weeks during multi-billion dollar mergers, she had an epiphany - time is the most valuable commodity. She started her own company, Balance CFO, picking up multiple clients along the way. When she found that going out on her own resulted in multiple bosses instead of just the one at a corporate job, she started looking more seriously at digital courses. Jamie's heart is with small business owners, and her passion is to educate them on financial literacy and maximizing their profits to pay themselves more.Discussion highlights:The Male-Female Finance DivideThe huge difference between how genders approach businessThe financial knowledge gap of women small business ownersThe staggering '40% and 4%' statistic every small business owner should know…and changeRelatable Financial LiteracyThe market for fun, relatable finance educationLeaving client work behind for profitable digital coursesLetting go of the money shame spiral 1 to 1 vs. 1 to ManyThe power of scalability and impactServing a larger audience through digital coursesHow she landed a spot on Amy Porterfield's top business podcast, 'Online Marketing Made Easy'The complete transformation of business and life in one yearNiche Down or Niche Up?Starting with a very niche course ideaNiching up to a service your audience needsListening to clients, group membersIdentifying a process that could become a course Exponential Growth Amidst COVID-19Grew her Facebook group from 5,000 to over 28,000 members in 4 monthsShifting content to serve finance needs due to the pandemicIdentifying a need to educate small business owners through PPP, SBA loans and moreThe Art of Supplying Value and the SaleShowed up for her group consistently, educating via Facebook LivesRealized new members needed a back to basics business finance courseLaunched a $179 course, sold over 860, earned six-figuresSold the course before building it to gauge interestCornerstones of a Six-Figure Digital Course LaunchThe critical piece of content marketingTap into what members of your Facebook group needShow up consistently and give value for freeLeverage Facebook group for list buildingGrowing an email list from 0 to over 24,000 within a yearThe sales mindset shiftMoving Forward - Goals and VisionsFocus on automation to continue creating her ideal lifestyleMaintain flexibility, especially through COVID-induced virtual learningMuscle Creative Wrap-UpIf you could listen to only one music artist for the rest of your life, who would it be? As we are looking to assess student understanding, are we considering the entire journey and not just content objectives? Things to consider when looking back: Do students understand the WHY of the unit and how is this demonstrated? Did they engage in a variety of inquiry thinking?Have we addressed the questions in our A-Z planner?Do students know how to ask a variety of questions?Have they gone through different stages of inquiry to stretch their thinking? To authentically assess a child, we need to see the big picture of student ability. This is especially important with inquiry-based learning, since it tends to be more hands-on in nature. How do we assess inquiry? How do we find a balance between collecting data on a child and evidence of student growth. Do we know the difference? According to the IB, there are four dimensions of assessment that need to be considered when evaluating a child. This provides a broader and more richer evaluation of student progress. The four dimensions include: monitoring - collecting evidence of student progress to make goalsdocumenting - collecting and displaying the process of learning measuring - capturing student understanding at one point in timereporting - sharing and celebrating student growth throughout the yearThe four dimensions of assessment help to balance the purpose of collecting data and evidence with student goal-setting.For a written blog post and other resources, visit: https://thinkchat2020.weebly.com/

Beyond Your You - tips to take your health and fitness beyond what you think you're capable of
In season 2 of “Beyond Your You,” we’re going to go beyond where season 1 took us. When I started this podcast in early 2019, my original intent was to interview primarily Orangetheory Fitness coaches to share more training and health tips from them. This season, we’re stretching outside the studio. We’ll still hear from Orangetheory coaches, but I’m also going to talk with people outside of the coaching realm - people like you and me who are plodding along on our personal journey to get fit, stay healthy, and sometimes conquer our own demons. Along the way, we’ll be inspired by people who are doing what they can to make a positive change in their community. With that look into the evolution of “Beyond Your You,” it’s fitting that the guest for the first episode of season 2 bridges both the former and current approach to this podcast.Kaity Wachtel, is an Orangetheory coach who also serves as a running, fitness and wellness coach outside the studio. She was a repeat guest in season 1, covering partner workouts – love ‘em or hate ‘em – and explaining what it takes to become an Orangetheory coach. In this episode, Kaity will talk about:How she’s going to “Show Up” in 2019 and why she chose that personal mantra for the yearThe activities scare her – and that she’s going to take on in the next few monthsHow she plans to “Show Up” for family and friendsWhat drove her to write in her blog, “Life isn't about avoiding challenges, risk, and pain. It's about collecting the scars and bruises to prove that we SHOWED UP for our lives.”Hear all about her plans so far, and offer her suggestions on how to complete her big, scary year.Follow Kaity on her blog, Rebel with a Cause, and on Instagram @coach_kaity or Facebook facebook.com/kaity.wachtelFollow your host, David Pittman, on Twitter @TheSocialPitt and Instagram @TheSocialPittTell your friends to listen and subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts.
#005: This is an extra special episode. Today, I’m bringing you the same exciting masterclass I taught to live audiences when I launched my digital course, Conservation Photography 101. I had a fantastic time teaching this material because I got to see how engaged the audience was, recognizing the limiting beliefs that are keeping them stuck, and how energized they were to blow past them and find success. It wasn’t enough for me to teach the masterclass a handful of times and leave it at that. This stuff is too powerful. So, today we’re tackling five limiting beliefs that keep too many talented photographers stuck in place, not moving forward with the stories they could do such an amazing job photographing… and publishing! And even if you have published stories under your belt, I’m willing to bet you have limiting beliefs that make it tough for you to get to the next level in your work. If that’s the case, please listen in because you’ll pick up some tips and inspiration for tackling any limiting belief holding you back. It’s all about mindset, and this episode will help you get on the right track!I created an extra awesome freebie to go with this episode. It’s underreported, but can be just as good if not better than FHR and LHRC.Ok everyone, let’s go over these booking portals one more time:Amex = Fine Hotels and ResortsChase = Luxury Hotel and Resort CollectionMastercard = Luxury Hotel and Resorts PortfolioAre we having fun yet? We’ll get to this again a little laterBest meal of 2019AlineaPricey---$600 a couple and upA true food “experience”Over a half dozen coursesA trip to the kitchen to see the showIt’s a world renowned restaurant and while I like to promote budget conscious choices, it’s sometimes fun to splurgeHonorable mention: CarboneWonderful, delicious ItalianCalm, pretty atmosphereI had great company on my visitGreat Italian food is hard to beatPenne with vodka is a mustBest gambling experience:Craps at the CalA Vegas Vacation meet upMany of the gambling podcast community’s greatest were thereMe, of courseYCBOTBunBoy360 Vegas crewMost importantly, great community members as wellDynamite session---I think I tripled upAll this despite only 2x oddsBest points and miles learning:Status Match GaloreMilesTalk has a great rundownBeing able to finagle the system in a way that one elite hotel status grants top tier status in a plethora of other networksCaesars Diamond and MLife Gold are great examplesMake sure to use your $100 celebration dinner before Jan 31Also match back to Wyndham in January as wellFor 2020:Do a credit card audit early in the yearAre you using all the benefits of your cards?Annual fees are a “travel membership” you’re payingIf you have $1200 in cc annual fees, you’re paying $100 a month for that membershipIs it worth it?Do you have benefits that overlap? Is it time to close a card?Be aware of credit score considerationsAre cheaper alternatives available?I’ll likely dump the Amex Platinum this yearIt’s pricey at $550 and I’ve gotten full value out of it in the past, is was always a stretch to do soI’m not confident my travels will justify it this yearThe two sexy perks for me are Centurion Lounge access and FHRI may be able to supplement that with a cheap Mastercard that allows for access to their luxury hotel programAlso I need to recognize that while Centurion Lounges can be nice, I’m rarely impressed by them I can also just try to show them my Twitter feed to get in---the standard “do you know who I am?” usually worksCards I’m looking at for 2020:Anything in the Capital One familyExpanding transfer partnersGood sign-on bonusesSpark has 200k after considerable spendAnother Amex card to replace PlatinumGreen seems fun but the perks aren’t a true “value” to meClear credit doesn’t cover full costNeither will Away creditGold is a front runner with the grocery bonus categoryTravels for 2020:Louisville last weekend in Feb (had to reschedule)April 17 weekend - BiloxiFanboy Fanfare? Managing crypto-assets can be an anxiety-inducing experience for a lot of people. While it's quite empowering to “be your own bank,” it's also scary for a lot of people who understand the risks associated with self-custody. Although cryptocurrency wallets have made tremendous progress since the days when a full-sync of the blockchain was required, there are still significant hurdles that limit broad adoption. This conversation on the future of wallets at SF Blockchain Week Epicenter conference includes Taylor Monahan of MyCrypto, David Gold of FIO Protocol, Dan Finlay of MetaMask, and Ouriel Ohayon of ZenGo. They discuss design, app store policies, and the evolution necessary to enable more people to send, receive, and manage their tokens confidently. Podcast: Trading Forex from AnywhereIn this video: 00:25 – We’re not geographically restricted01:15 – All about Nelson02:05 – What’s the freedom worth to you?02:47 – Plan now as we head towards the end of the yearThe great thing about trading Forex is you can trade from anywhere. Let's talk about that and more right now.Hey traders, Andrew Mitchem here at the Forex Trading Coach with video and podcast number 346.We’re not geographically restrictedNow trading is quite unique… Not many businesses, not many industries out there that you are not geographically restricted with. It's one of the awesome benefits of trading Forex. We are moving, so tomorrow is our last day in this area… It's what's called the Waikato. It's a an area South of Auckland in the North Island of New Zealand. Been around this area, originally came here for dairy farming reasons and we've lived in this area for around 22, 23 years and it's now time for a change. So by the time you get to watch this video and podcasts will be many, many hundreds of kilometres away. We are moving to Nelson, which is in the very top of the South Island. A big move. Lots to get done, but really looking forward to the challenge and and a change. All about NelsonSo reasons we're going there? Well, Nelson's just a fantastic place in itself. It's the sunshine capital of New Zealand. It's right on the coast near awesome beaches, incredible scenery, absolutely amazing scenery. You've got mountains, you've got beaches. Craft beer capital of New Zealand, lots and lots of hops grown around there, which would suit me massively. The wine capital of New Zealand where you hear about the famous New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc is all around that area, the Marlborough area of New Zealand. So lots of great reasons to go there. Awesome weather for flying the helicopter and really looking forward to that. And my wife and our daughters are into horses, so great horse tracks, great horse weather as well. So lots and lots of good positive reasons why we are going there. What’s the freedom worth to you?But the reason I wanted to make this is to just say to you, look, what's that worth to you? What does that geographic, or that lack of that geographic, restriction worth to you? You see all you need to trade really is like a reasonably good internet connection and a laptop. I mean you can trade even using like your phone… Not on your phone, but you know, you get your hotspot working on your phone and that's all you need to power your laptop. So you know, it just has so many benefits. The ability to be remote, the ability to be wireless, the ability to be non-geographic specific. So again, what's that worth you? What does that have as value?Plan now as we head towards the end of the yearMy suggestion is now as we're heading towards like the end of the year is have a good serious think about that, you know, and what is that education, that knowledge worth to you to be able to go from maybe where you are now to becoming a Forex trader? But don't expect to do it straight away. You know, this takes a long time to get to establish and get to work properly. So really it's about that… What can you do now in the short-term? What can you do over, even like the Christmas/New Year time where you may have got a bit of time off work, you may have got a bit more sort of free time to be able to learn something new, to be able to study something. So that little bit of short-term work and effort right now for that bigger picture, longer term goal of that freedom or that financial freedom, that time freedom or that geographic freedom. So have a think about that and look forward to catching up with you this time next week where I'll be making my video from Nelson. So after 22 years in the Waikato, the Hamilton area of, of New Zealander,

In the past he humbled the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, but in the future he will honor Galilee of the nations, by the Way of the Sea, beyond the Jordan—The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned. You have enlarged the nation and increased their joy; they rejoice before you as people rejoice at the harvest, as warriors rejoice when dividing the plunder. For as in the day of Midian’s defeat, you have shattered the yoke that burdens them, the bar across their shoulders, the rod of their oppressor. Every warrior’s boot used in battle and every garment rolled in blood will be destined for burning, will be fuel for the fire.Isaiah 9:6-7 NIV For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. Japan is facing critical population-related problems. Most notably, it has an aging population due to a declining birth rate. As a result, people in the country are growing increasingly concerned about the future of Japan, the stability of its social insurance programs and, believe it or not, whether or not the Japanese race itself will be around in a couple hundred years. Despite those concerns, there is some pushback against the immigration programs that the government is introducing in an effort to increase the size of the labor force, and people feel they have stronger reasons not to have more children. How do these podcasters see these issues affecting their own daily lives in Japan, listen to find out now!Conversation highlights:Chit-chat about the quality of McDonald’s food in Japan versus overseas, and also the very polite service of the Japanese staffThe Sapporo Beer Festival has begun, and it’s interesting to see the large number of families and older couples enjoying the festivalThe Japan government is encouraging companies to hire employees until age 70 due to the labor crunchAfter retiring, many employees work part time at the same company to help supplement their pension income, or to just stay activeJapan’s population has been decreasing for several years, so the government is taking measures to encourage more foreign workers to come to JapanAs the requirements for permanent residency continue to loosen, certain people are obtaining it after living in Japan for only five years, whereas in the past, it was only being approved for people who had been living in Japan for 10 yearsIndividuals designated as “highly-skilled foreign professionals" are able to obtain permanent residency on a fast track of one yearThe number of immigrants in Japan has been increasing for the past six years, with an increase of 167,000 people in the last year, for a total 2.2 million people, or approximately 2% of the total population (For comparison, immigrants in the US make up 14.4% of the population.)Although residents in Japan are required to pay into the national pension system, it is possible to get exemptions or reduce your contribution amount based on your living situation (low income, students, etc.)As some people believe they will not be able to receive pension distributions when they retire, they are not willing to make contributions. However, the pension system promotes the point of view that pension contributions are meant to support current retirees, not your own future.Burke unsuccessfully tries to compare the decreasing population problem in Japan to the problem of climate changeBen explains that population issues are a no-win situation: the decreasing population problem is creating issues for society, but over-population with the world’s limited resources is also a problemThe conservative mentality of not wanting to dilute the Japanese race and culture may be contributing to the decreasing population problem, and there are concerns that foreigners cannot understand the “Japanese mentality” that is necessary in the workforceWhile Japan has been utilizing immigrant work programs, especially with southeast Asian countries, many of the workers will disappear into society and overstay their visas, and others might be subject to abuse in their jobs or a dangerous work environment
