Mike Ferguson in the Morning 11-20-24 (7:05am) O.H. Skinner, Executive Director of Alliance For Consumers, talks about their campaign, "2035", which aims to create awareness of what our future could look like in 2035 if policies set by elected officials such as Gov. Gavin Newsom are mandated nationwide. Information from Alliance For Consumers: Alliance for Consumers launched a groundbreaking new campaign, “2035”, which aims to create awareness of what our future could look like in 2035 if we prioritize Progressive Lifestyle Choices over what's best for consumers, and what could happen if energy policies set by elected officials such as Gavin Newsom are mandated across the country. There are encouraging steps that the incoming Trump Administration will make rolling back these radical climate goals a priority. Incoming President Trump has already nominated several individuals who have been advocates for energy production. Rep. Lee Zeldin, who has been outspoken on radical climate policies, was recently named the nominee for head of EPA. Chris Wright was named the nominee for Energy Secretary, and Doug Burgum was named the Secretary of Interior nominee, signaling a desire for America to achieve energy independence by harnessing all forms of energy production. According to its website, the FAA claims, "Individuals with targeted or 'severe' disabilities are the most under-represented segment of the Federal workforce." Under its People with Disabilities Program, the agency says it "actively recruits, hires, promotes, retains, develops and advances people with disabilities." The FAA targets the following disabilities as a matter of policy: "Hearing, vision, missing extremities, partial paralysis, complete paralysis, epilepsy, severe intellectual disability, psychiatric disability and dwarfism." The FAA told Fox News that it "seeks qualified candidates from as many sources as possible, all of whom must meet rigorous qualifications that of course will vary by position." Its website reveals that those with disabilities or those who have a veteran status can also be hired via the non-competitive, "on-the-spot" process as long as a manager files the proper paperwork, thus giving them preferential treatment in the hiring process. The aviation industry has received further scrutiny from the public in the wake of an Alaska Airlines door plug being blown off the side of its two-month-old Boeing 737-9 MAX aircraft causing it to make an emergency landing. In a post on X, tech mogul Elon Musk asked, "Do you want to fly in an airplane where they prioritize DEI hiring over your safety?" He added, "That is actually happening." "People will die due to DEI," Musk said. Musk's comments came in response to a report that revealed in 2022 that Boeing began prioritizing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) as part of its hiring process in 2022. The Alaskan Airlines situation came on the heels of a shocking report in December, which showed there were 19 instances where planes nearly crashed into each other at airports in the first ten months of 2023. https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/news/business/2795955/shark-tank-powerhouse-investor-says-he-wont-invest-in-california-bad-policy/ Shark Tank powerhouse investor says he won’t invest in California: ‘Bad policy’ Kevin O’Leary of Shark Tank revealed he would not make business investments in several Democratic states, including California. O’Leary explained his reasoning in a yet-to-be-released episode of Sen. Marsha Blackburn’s (R-TN) show Unmuted. According to a transcript reviewed by Townhall, the politics of a state help O’Leary determine where to invest. “I’m not trying to get involved in the partisanship of this statement. Just a fact, I don’t invest in New York, I don’t invest in Massachusetts, I don’t invest in California. In my mind, those are examples of states that are uninvestable because of bad policy,” O’Leary said. “So, I’m looking for the path of least resistance. If you make it hard for me to make money, I just take my money and go somewhere else.” California in particular is ranked in the top ten for sales taxes and corporate taxes, according to the Tax Foundation, while New York is in the top ten only for its sales tax. O’Leary pointed to Tennessee as an example of a state with “fantastic tax policy, reduced regulatory environment, reduced permitting time.” Any other state that doesn’t implement these business-friendly policies is at risk of “killing jobs,” according to O’Leary. The Canadian investor started his own venture capital firm O’Leary Ventures last year, over 15 years after his first appearance on Shark Tank where he spends episodes deciding in what small businesses he desires to invest. https://www.breitbart.com/politics/2024/01/15/report-white-house-swatted-prank-caller-claiming-residence-on-fire/ White House Swatted by ‘Prank Caller’ Claiming Residence on Fire Fire trucks and ambulances reportedly rushed to the White House Monday morning around seven o’clock after a “prank caller” claimed the residence was on fire and someone was trapped inside. The incident represents the latest swatting event against political officials. Dangerous swatting events appear to have first been instigated by Democrat prank callers against political opponents. The prank call at the White House forced fire trucks and ambulances to rush to a snow-covered White House, the Daily Mail reported. After arriving, the District of Columbia Fire and Emergency Medical Services and the U.S. Secret Service determined the incident was a false alarm. “Fire in the White House, 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue,” a Washington, DC, dispatcher said at 7:04 a.m. Authorities gave an “all clear” order at 7:15 AM. President Joe Biden was located at Camp David on Monday morning, far away from the residence. Authorities traced the prank call to an apparently spoofed phone number, a source told CNN. “Someone who was reached at the callback number for the 911 report indicated they did not place it, a source told the Associated Press, indicating it was likely spoofed,” the Daily Mail reported. Recent politicians who were swatted include Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL) and Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), along with celebrities Ashton Kutcher, Justin Bieber, and Kim Kardashian. https://abcnews.go.com/Business/wireStory/yemen-houthi-rebels-fire-missile-us-warship-red-106370679 Houthi rebels strike a U.S.-owned ship off the coast of Yemen in the Gulf of Aden, raising tensions Houthi rebels fired a missile, striking a U.S.-owned ship Monday just off the coast of Yemen in the Gulf of Aden, less than a day after they launched an anti-ship cruise missile toward an American destroyer in the Red Sea. The attack on the Gibraltar Eagle, later claimed by the Houthis, further escalates tensions gripping the Red Sea after American-led strikes on the rebels. The Houthis' attacks have roiled global shipping, amid Israel's war with Hamas in the Gaza Strip, targeting a crucial corridor linking Asian and Mideast energy and cargo shipments to the Suez Canal onward to Europe. The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations, which oversees Mideast waters, said Monday's attack happened some 110 miles (177 kilometers) miles southeast of Aden. It said the ship’s captain reported that the “port side of vessel hit from above by a missile.” Private security firms Ambrey and Dryad Global told The Associated Press that the vessel was the Eagle Gibraltar, a Marshall Islands-flagged bulk carrier. The U.S. military's Central Command later acknowledged the strike. “The ship has reported no injuries or significant damage and is continuing its journey,” Central Command said. Houthi military spokesman Brig. Gen. Yahya Saree claimed the attack in a recorded television address that aired Monday night. “The Yemeni armed forces consider all American and British ships and warships participating in the aggression against our country as hostile targets,” he said. The vessel is owned by Eagle Bulk Shipping, a Stamford, Connecticut-based firm traded on the New York Stock Exchange. In a statement to the AP, the company acknowledged the strike and said it caused “limited damage to a cargo hold but (the ship) is stable and is heading out of the area.” “All seafarers onboard the vessel are confirmed to be uninjured,” the firm said. “The vessel is carrying a cargo of steel products. Eagle Bulk management is in close contact with all relevant authorities concerning this matter.” Satellite-tracking data analyzed by the AP showed the Eagle Gibraltar had been bound for the Suez Canal, but rapidly turned around at the time of the attack. Central Command said it detected a separate anti-ship ballistic missile launch toward the southern Red Sea on Monday, though it ”failed in flight and impacted on land in Yemen." The U.S. Maritime Administration, under the Transportation Department, also issued a warning Monday saying there continues to be “a high degree of risk to commercial vessels” traveling near Yemen. “While the decision to transit remains at the discretion of individual vessels and companies, it is recommended that U.S. flag and U.S.-owned commercial vessels” stay away from Yemen in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden “until further notice,” the advisory said. Sunday's missile launch toward the American warship also marked the first U.S.-acknowledged fire by the Houthis since America and allied nations began strikes Friday on the rebels following weeks of assaults on shipping in the Red Sea. The Houthi fire in the direction of the USS Laboon, an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer operating in the southern reaches of the Red Sea, Central Command said. The missile came from near Hodeida, a Red Sea port city long held by the Houthis, the U.S. said. “An anti-ship cruise missile was fired from Iranian-backed Houthi militant areas of Yemen toward USS Laboon,” Central Command said. “There were no injuries or damage reported." The Houthis did not acknowledge that attack. It wasn’t presently clear whether the U.S. would retaliate for the latest attacks, though President Joe Biden has said he “will not hesitate to direct further measures to protect our people and the free flow of international commerce as necessary.” The first day of U.S.-led strikes Friday hit 28 locations and struck more than 60 targets with cruise missiles and bombs launched by fighter jets, warships and a submarine. Sites hit included weapon depots, radars and command centers, including in remote mountain areas, the U.S. has said. The Houthis have yet to acknowledge how severe the damage was from the strikes, which they said killed five of their troops and wounded six others. U.S. forces followed up with a strike Saturday on a Houthi radar site.

In this week's episode me, and my guest clash and have an angry exchange of ideas. We talk about the problem with centralised control and what issue could arise from disturbing AI technology that pretty much certainly going to be are the future. We also go into the past three years and everything that went on to do with control, locking us down, rights being abused and so much more. We finish the episode by going into the dangers of AI, and what can realistically be done to stop or prevent it if anything? While we did have a heated exchange I learnt a lot and was a needed clash of ideas and our view on the world. Hope you enjoyed it as much as I did making it! Love you all! I told you... I told you... I told you... Russia is far from being defeated by Ukraine. The American Press really does not know what to do with itself at this given moment. They don't know whether to celebrate that something is actually happening or be mad because Putin is spanking their beloved Zelensky. The war effort is heating up and it's exciting. Dutch Farmer Protest [9:19] Hi Robb and Nicki - First I'm sure you're wondering why I send you guys so much periodic email and don't just join THR. It's nothing against you guys (you're pretty dang awesome), I've been a member in the past and it was lovely, but I find it's too easy to let myself get sucked into the online communities and spend too much time with my phone in front of me. So I join for an occasional challenge or reset and then give a good Irish goodbye for a while. Anyway, something that came across my brain this week that made me furrow my brow. Have you heard about what is going on in the Netherlands? While I've heard gobs about reducing carbon emissions, this is the first I've heard anything about reducing nitrogen emissions and the Dutch government seem keen to force plenty of people to give up their livelihoods and food security to do it: this is the article I saw https://www.politico.eu/article/police-fire-dutch-farmer-protest-nitrogen-emission-cut/ (I found myself immediately cheering on the farmers but am trying to get some more info and perspective). Is nitrogen emission that big of a problem? Or is this just the next thing down the pike from carbon blinders? What gives? Would love your thoughts. Thanks for the fiesty banter and witty analysis that I love you guys for. Keep on. Cheers, Christin ------------ “The honest message … is that not all farmers can continue their business,” the government admitted in a statement last month. https://abcnews.go.com/Business/wireStory/explainer-dutch-farmers-protesting-emissions-85848026 The ruling coalition wants to cut emissions of pollutants, predominantly nitrogen oxide and ammonia, by 50% nationwide by 2030. Ministers call the proposal an “unavoidable transition” that aims to improve air, land and water quality. They warn that farmers will have to adapt or face the prospect of shuttering their businesses. “The honest message ... is that not all farmers can continue their business,” and those who do will likely have to farm differently, the government said in a statement this month as it unveiled emission reduction targets. Livestock produce ammonia in their urine and feces. The government in the past has called on farmers to use feed for their animals that contains less protein as a way of reducing ammonia emissions. The problem is compounded in the Netherlands, which is known for its intensive farming practices, with large numbers of livestock kept on small areas of land. PLUG-IN CAR GRANT CUT FROM £2,500 TO £1,500 - The Government has brought yet another round of cuts to its plug-in car grant. Buyers can now only claim a maximum of £1,500 off the price of a new eligible plug-in car (£1,000 less than before) on models costing no more than £32,000 – £3,000 less than previously. - The plug-in van grant has also been cut to £5,000 for large vans and £2,500 for small vans, with a limit of 1,000 customers per year. Plug-in motorcycles will benefit from a maximum of £500 off and mopeds £150. - Mike Hawes, chief executive of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), said the cuts represented "a blow to customers". Original Source : https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/news/354541/plug-car-grant-cut-ps2500-ps1500 IMMEDIATE CUTS TO GOVERNMENT EV GRANTS - For the second time this year, the Government has announced instant cuts to the electric vehicle grant, with a £1000 reduction in the amount offered on cars taking it to £1500, and the threshold dropping by £3000 so only vehicles under £32,000 now qualify. - The updated Government website lists the cars still eligible for the grant, although it remains to be seen whether price alignments to get under the new thresholds will be announced in the coming days and weeks, as was the case from the likes of BMW, Citroen, DS, Hyundai, Kia, Peugeot, Vauxhall and others when the previous change was announced in March. The new Citroen e-Berlingo and Peugeot e-Rifter in particular have model priced just above the £32,000 point. - Cars no longer qualifying due to reduced price threshold (subject to any price realignments in reaction to the grant changes): BMW i3 Citroen e-C4 Citroen SpaceTourer Hyundai Ioniq Kia Niro Kia Soul Peugeot e-2008 Skoda Enyaq Vauxhall Mokka-e Vauxhall Vivaro e-Life Volkswagen ID.4 Original Source : https://www.companycartoday.co.uk/immediate-cuts-to-government-ev-grants/ NEW GERMAN GOVERNMENT TO REVAMP INCENTIVES FOR ELECTRIC CARS - Germany's new government said Monday it is extending the country's current system of incentive payments for buyers of electric and hybrid cars for a year but then plans to impose tougher requirements for vehicles to qualify for the support. - The economy and climate ministry that was set up when Germany's new government took office last week said it will only provide payments starting in 2023 for “electric vehicles that demonstrably have a positive climate-protection effect.” - For the next year, the current system will still apply, making buyers of electric-only cars eligible for incentives of up to 9,000 euros (about $10,200) and qualifying buyers of plug-in hybrids for up to 6,750 euros. Original Source : https://abcnews.go.com/Business/wireStory/german-government-revamp-incentives-electric-cars-81718327 GERMANY TO BOOST ELECTRIC CAR SALES BY EXTENDING €9,000 HELP TO BUY SUBSIDIES - The government's goal is to see 15 million purely electrified cars in circulation by 2030. So far, Germany has seen only 520,000 of them roll off dealerships' forecourts, according to AFP.This financial support, introduced in July 2020, has played a key role in the record increase in the market share of electrified vehicles in Germany, - In May 2021, Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy Peter Altmaier announced his intention to make the payment process easier for charging stations. “For eMobility to really breakthrough, we must not only provide funding for electric vehicles, but also make the charging process and payment for this more convenient,” Altmaier said.“In future, the charging stations that are open to the public will accept standard credit and debit cards. This means that these charging stations will be open to everyone – including customers that do not own a smartphone. As credit cards work everywhere, this also opens up charging stations to cross-border travel.”. But with a number of tweaks that mean it's smaller and more efficient than current cars, but still has buckets of room inside. - Arrival announced that it had teamed up with Uber to create a “purpose-built vehicle for ride-hailing.” It's a project with an ambitious deadline, too, with the first models expected to roll off the production line in Q3, 2023. - The Arrival Car is deeply uncool, a box on wheels with an emphasis on maximizing the internal space for passengers. It has the same silhouette as a French-made minivan; you could easily imagine a line of these parked outside a Saturday-morning under 15's soccer match. But, because it wholly rejects the need to be aesthetic for the sake of aesthetics, it's also quite cool. The premium manufacturer is earmarking about €18 billion for electrification and hybridization alone and thereby emphasizing its clear commitment to electromobility. - With the new models Audi e-tron GT quattro, Audi RS e-tron GT, and the first fully electric models in the compact segment, the Audi Q4 e-tron and Audi Q4 Sportback e-tron, the electric portfolio has grown by four additional models. By 2025, the company aims to have more than 20 fully electric models in its lineup. The Lucid Air, for example, has the longest range of any electric car on the market with up to 520 miles on a charge. It's tough to imagine an EV beating that range estimate anytime soon, but if anyone can beat Lucid Motors, it's Mercedes-Benz. - More than one year ago, Mercedes teased an EV with a staggering 750-mile range, called the Vision EQXX. The vehicle will be revealed (in concept form) on January 3, 2022, but before then, the German automaker just released a new teaser for its most efficient car ever. - To achieve a 750-mile range, the EQXX will likely sport a massive battery pack and an extremely low drag coefficient. - Mercedes may not give us full battery details when it reveals the EQXX, but the German automaker promises it will "[increase] the energy density at the cell level by a further 20% compared to the EQS," Original Source : https://carbuzz.com/news/mercedes-teases-new-ev-that-will-destroy-everyone-on-range LIGHTYEAR'S NEW SOLAR EV WILL REQUIRE FIVE TIMES LESS CHARGING THAN ITS PREDECESSOR - While we eagerly wait for Lightyear One the solar-powered electric vehicle (EV) to go into production, its makers have already announced a more cost-friendly version model that will offer twice the range of similarly priced vehicles, - managed to use the car in European summer without having to charge it at all. The car manages this with solar panels that are seamlessly present on its surface and with high-efficiency motors that use up to three times lesser power per kilometer than EVs in the market today, the company claims. - currently offer. And with its solar panels, it will require up to five times lesser charging as well. There is definitely an upgrade coming to the solar panel array on the Lightyear since Two will rely heavily on the panels to achieve this. Another important prospect of the car is its price. Chris, Zack, and Melanie get together to talk about ongoing developments in the Arctic. Climate change is causing flooding and environmental damage, but it is also providing new opportunities for navigation, mining, fishing, tourism, and defense. How can America's national security and economic interests best be protected in the face of increasing Russian and Chinese activity there? How should we prioritize the region when we have other critical threats to address? Have we and our partners that border the Arctic missed chances for influence there that we cannot recover? Is it possible for the United States to strengthen its position there without appearing to encourage an arms race? Chris wishes we could consider the merits of arguments instead of personally attacking those making them, Zack condemns the Chinese government's treatment of Olympian Peng Shuai, and Melanie looks at the hypocrisy of governors who claim to support free markets but want to prohibit businesses from imposing vaccine mandates. On this week's Unhashed Podcast: Bryan upsets Charles Hoskinson with our shitcoin toilet paper, scammers are sending fake replacement devices to Ledger customers, China bans Bitcoin mining for real this time, Brock Pierce pretends to make headlines as the "official Bitcoin ambassador", South Korea tightens up exchange regulations, and Somsen gets faced with last week's Lightning round dilemma as he enters the grocery store without a mask!Charles Hoskinson himself had something to say about our Toilet Paper while on @lexfridman's Podcast. From the Founder and CEO of Cardano, 'œI was in Miami at a conference there, I had a toilet paper roll thrown at me that had shitcoin written on it'.Scammers are sending fake replacement devices to Ledger customers exposed in a recent data breach that are used to steal cryptocurrency wallets. In a post on Reddit, a Ledger user shared a devious scam after receiving what looks like a Ledger Nano X device in the mail. The device came in an authentic looking packaging, with a poorly written letter explaining that the device was sent to replace their existing one as their customer information was leaked online on the RaidForum hacking forum.China Bans Bitcoin (mining)! For real this time. From the Global Times (so you know its true), 'œMany Bitcoin mines in Southwest China's Sichuan Province - one of China's largest cryptocurrency mining bases - were closed as of Sunday, according to after local authorities ordered a halt to mining in the region on Friday amid an intensified nationwide crackdown against cryptocurrency mining. The ban also means that more than 90 percent of China's Bitcoin mining capacity is estimated to be shut down, at least for the short term, as regulators in other key mining hubs in China's north and southwest regions have taken similar harsh steps.' However, this time, it seems like there is some truth to the articles/rumors, as hash power has taken a dive (per estimated difficulty adjustments) over the last month. Blocktimes over the last 2 days have hit ~13.9 mins. Is this good for bitcoin?Elsewhere in China, as reported by ABCnews, 'œChina's biggest banks promised Monday to refuse to help customers trade Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies after the central bank said executives were told to step up enforcement of a government ban. Regulators appear to worry that despite the 2013 ban on Chinese banks and other institutions handling cryptocurrencies, the state-run financial system might be indirectly exposed to risks. Beijing also worries users might evade efforts to monitor and control the financial system. The four major state-owned commercial banks and payment service Alipay promised to step up monitoring of customers and block use of their accounts to buy or trade crypto-currencies.' '" https://abcnews.go.com/Business/wireStory/chinese-banks-promise-step-cryptocurrency-ban-78398255Brock Pierce made 'œheadlines' in more ways than one over the last week. He posted on this twitter feed that he was part of the 'œ official delegation of Bitcoin ambassadors' going to El Salvadore to meet with the president. Brock was rightfully taken to task for declaring there was any 'œofficial' bitcoin ambassadors. To make matters worse, Brock posted a screenshot of an article (including his photo above the fold on the front page) in the paper Noticia, however, internet sleuths were quick to point out that the article did not appear in either the print or digital version of the actual paper. Further sleuthing from Kim Nilsson@nikuhodai revealed that a 'œnew edition' was posted online several days after the delegation hit the ground and Brock posted the initial photo.Bitcoin Magazine writes: 'œThe Lightning Network, a Bitcoin Layer 2 scaling solution proposed in 2015 by Joseph Poon and Thaddeus Dryja, has grown a lot in just a few years. Now, the network has achieved a significant milestone of housing more than 1,500 BTC in its channels, roughly $56.55 million. Perhaps the most recent of the Lightning Network's advancements toward wider adoption relates to bitcoin exchanges adding support for the protocol. Bitfinex was the first major one to do so, allowing its users to withdraw funds directly to Lightning in 2019. Others have since followed, including Hodl Hodl, River Financial and OKEx, also providing the benefits of instant deposits/withdrawals and relatively low fees to their users'. https://bitcoinmagazine.com/technical/lightning-network-over-1500-btcCoindesk writes: 'œSouth Korea's banks are reassessing their partnerships with domestic crypto exchanges to determine whether they'll continue their current contracts. Currently, only four exchanges '" Bithumb, Upbit, Coinone and Korbit '" have established partnerships with banks. These are often referred to as the 'œBig 4.' According to South Korea's Financial Transactions Reports Act (FTRA), crypto exchanges are required to register with financial authorities by Sept. 24 of this year. After the registration deadline, exchanges will fall under the FSC's regulatory net and be subject to regular scrutiny. The banks associated with them will also be monitored to ensure that know-your-customer (KYC) and anti-money laundering (AML) protocols are being enforced. Upbit, the largest exchange in South Korea by volume, recently delisted 24 tokens and removed the fiat on-ramps for five tokens. Many view this move as an attempt by Upbit to remove any potential risk in its upcoming assessment by K Bank.' '" https://www.coindesk.com/south-korea-banks-review-partnerships-crypto-exchange

Evidence and pressure, though, are mounting.Related: ‘This island is a prison’: Migrants say plan for a refugee camp on Lesbos is too isolating“What the Greek government is doing — and what we have documented them doing through testimonies, through evidence sent to us by survivors — is that people are being abandoned in the middle of the sea.”Lorraine Leete, coordinator for Legal Centre Lesvos“What the Greek government is doing — and what we have documented them doing through testimonies, through evidence sent to us by survivors — is that people are being abandoned in the middle of the sea,” said Lorraine Leete, coordinator for Legal Centre Lesvos, a nonprofit that’s documenting pushbacks and providing legal support to survivors. In the last year, the organization has filed four cases with the European Court of Human Rights regarding pushbacks in the Aegean. While some migrants describe being intercepted and turned back at sea, others claim they were forcefully removed once they made it to land, and put on boats back to Turkey. There are also reports of pushbacks on land along Greece’s northern border.Allegations of pushbacks are not new. Organizations such as Aegean Boat Report have been tracking them for years. But in the last year, “there has been an increase in the systemic practice of pushing people back,” Leete said, partly because of a failure to implement a deal between the European Union and Turkey. Under the 2016 EU-Turkey deal, Turkey agreed to close its borders and stop asylum-seekers from coming into Europe in exchange for EU funds. Ankara also agreed to take back people whose asylum applications were rejected in Greece. But that’s not happening.“As a result, we see that, unofficially, Greece has been stopping people from coming, has been pushing people back to Turkey because it cannot officially deport people,” Leete said.‘Asylum is a human right’“I never imagined this would happen here,” said Shewaili, the Iraqi refugee, who is now working on documenting pushbacks. “I never imagined that when they see people with life jackets, with nothing in their pockets in the middle of the sea, they [would] push them back and they leave them for dead.”Related: Activists protest migrant facility plan in Greece: ‘Greek islands will not be turned to prisons’ He worked as an interpreter for Legal Centre Lesvos, and more recently, has been tracking pushback cases on his own.“It's just inhuman[e], illegal and a project of death.”Yousif Al Shewaili, Iraqi refugee in Greece“It's just inhuman[e], illegal and a project of death,” he said of the practice.Greek authorities have repeatedly denied allegations of pushbacks. Not everyone is on board.“We strongly deny that the Greek Coast Guard has [ever been] involved in pushbacks,” Greek Migration Minister Notis Mitarakis said at a press conference in March, where he also described reports of pushbacks as “fake news.”There are also allegations that Frontex, the EU’s border agency, has been involved in illegal pushbacks of migrants.Leaked internal documents of #Frontex (EU's border agency) offer insights into possible #illegal pushback of asylum seekers. The documents were obtained by German pro-transparency group FragDenStaat. https://t.co/f2dtjYXK3v#LawOfRule @fragdenstaat #renegade @Frontex— This is Europe (@This_is_Europe) March 9, 2021An internal probe, whose findings were released in March and were widely criticized, found no substantial evidence linking Frontex to pushbacks. Other investigations, including one by a European Parliament committee, are ongoing.Meanwhile, major humanitarian organizations, including the UN’s refugee agency, are sounding the alarm on the issue.“The fact is that the frequency of reports is increasing. [That] deserves attention and mobilization by everyone.”Mireille Girard, UNHCR’s representative in Greece“The fact is that the frequency of reports is increasing,” said Mireille Girard, UNHCR’s representative in Greece. “[That] deserves attention and mobilization by everyone.”Since the beginning of 2020, the agency has been looking into approximately 300 cases of reported pushbacks in Greece and passing along information it’s been able to verify to Greek authorities so they can conduct formal investigations. One example is a case from mid-February, whose details UNHCR has been able to substantiate by speaking with witnesses and survivors and reviewing other evidence.“What we know is that several families of Afghan nationals arrived on Lesbos,” Girard said. Graffiti sprayed on a building in Mytilene, Lesbos. Credit: Lydia Emmanouilidou/The World Thirteen people, including four children, presented themselves to the authorities and were put in a reception area with new arrivals. But overnight, they were forced into a van and driven to a port. Once there, they were taken out to sea on a speedboat, put on a life raft without life jackets and left adrift. The people were later rescued by the Turkish Coast Guard.“It's very important that Europe upholds the principle on which it's founded and its own asylum policy, meaning that people should be received with dignity at borders and they should have a chance to explain their claim if they're seeking protection,” Girard said.“Asylum is a human right. It’s an imperative norm of human rights,” she added. “When there are indications that there may have been a pushback, this needs to be looked at very formally and seriously because this is illegal.” ‘Climate of impunity’ “In cases [where] we receive written comments from actors like UNHCR, we do take them seriously,” Greek Migration Minister Mitarakis said at the March press conference, adding that there have been a number of independent investigations but that none of them have found authorities violating EU or international laws. The EU’s top migration official, Home Affairs Commissioner Ylva Johansson, who sat beside Mitarakis at the press conference, said Greek authorities “can do more when it comes to investigating these alleged pushbacks and to clarify them.”Critics say that Greece and a number of EU member states have been far too complacent — and that Greece isn’t doing enough to investigate these pushbacks while EU member states are turning a blind eye to the problem.“You see this atmosphere, this climate of impunity … spreading.”Tineke Strik, member of the European Parliament from the Netherlands“You see this atmosphere, this climate of impunity … spreading,” said Tineke Strik, a member of the European Parliament from the Netherlands, with the Greens group.Strik is on the parliamentary committee currently investigating Frontex’s role in pushbacks and other human rights violations.Strik pointed to a recent statement by one of Europe’s top officials. During a visit to Greece last year, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen thanked Greece “for being our European shield.”Strik said she took the comment to mean: “You’re doing a good job because you keep the migrants out,” adding, “And as long as this is the message, member states feel free to go on with violations.”

OK, ok. We’ve gathered together some tips from various articles to discuss Holiday Spending today. Listen to our experts from New Perspectives https://www.newper.com/ thoughts on these tips:Stick to your budget: Plan how much you’ll spend on gifts, food, drink, and decorationsAllocate a dollar amount of what you want to spent and who you will shop for. Tally up what you’ve already spent so far if you shop through the year and be aware of what you already bought and what you’ve already spent. Make a list of who you need to buy for and what you want to buy. If you’re not sure who will be attending the family dinner, call and ask the hosts or look back at last year’s pictures. Knowing who to buy for will help you avoid buying “stuff” just in case you missed someone.Holiday debt can linger for months, straining your household budget and even limiting your ability to save for retirement and other goalsWhile planning this year's holidays, start thinking about how you'll save money next year. How to pay for your gifts:Use Cash: it can help you control and understand your spending limits. If you want to use a credit card use only one credit card. If you have several, choose the credit card with the lowest interest rate and leave all the others at home. Using only one card also makes it easier to keep track of what you’ve spent. Once you’ve bought for someone, cross them off your list so that you don’t keep buying.Avoid signing up for store credit cards: You’re ready to pay – and just as you reach into your wallet the cashier says “would you like to sign up for our store credit card and get an extra 10 percent off?” They’ll offer you 10 percent off that day but charge you 4 percent every other day that you don’t pay the balance.Don’t buy gifts for yourself: Twenty-two percent of Americans buy gifts for themselves when they are shopping for others. To build your holiday budget, trim discretionary expenses over the next couple of months. Cut back on dining out or going to the movies, or temporarily cancel a couple of monthly subscription services.Shopping tips:Sneak into the Mall - Avoid Busy Times and Impulse Shopping. Pick off-peak times to actually do your shopping. Hitting the stores during the day might save you some time and help you avoid impulse shopping.Eat before you go and take a bottle of water along. This will help you from spending extra money.Shop online to avoid spontaneous purchases - Buy as many gifts as possible online to avoid the temptation of picking up extra bits in the shops. Retailers are dab hands at enticing shoppers with beautiful Christmas displays.Start buying presents now - You still have two (possibly three) pay checks to go until Christmas so start your present-buying now if you can. Buying just one or two gifts this month will take the pressure off mentally and financially. Panic buying is the easiest way to blow the budget!Black Friday and Cyber Monday can offer big savings, but you might find better deals at other times. Start checking prices now so you know what's a good deal — and what to skip.Being frugal with holiday meal shopping can go far. Let go of some food traditions and focus on what your eaters like. You’ll have less food waste and less money waste. What to buy:Kids - One or two favorite toys is better than a mountain of toys and is less expensive. By buying something they can do or play with right away, they don’t think about how much or how little they got – they’re too busy enjoying their time playing with what they have!Spouse - Consider not exchanging expensive gifts with your spouse. Buy a game that the whole family can play together, a DVD for family movie night, and some treats that will become part of what you serve when guests or family stop by.Think Free: Save Money With Homemade Gifts. Look at your shopping list and decide if you really need to buy for everyone on the list. You still have time to make some personalized gift certificates for those who would value your time, company or help over a store-bought item. Think about babysitting for new parents, helping an older aunt or uncle around their home, or taking a grandparent out for a drive followed by dinner at your house. Homemade gifts can save money, but they also come from the heart which can put a real twinkle in someone’s eyes.Do Secret Santa with family/friends - If you usually buy for all your family and friends, talk to them now about doing Secret Santa. Explain that you’re trying to keep your spending under control this year and that you’d rather buy one person a slightly more expensive present.https://www.foxbusiness.com/personal-finance/holiday-debt-tips-to-avoid-overspendinghttps://www.mymoneycoach.ca/blog/paying-for-Christmas-with-credit-avoiding-debt.htmlhttps://www.yourmoney.com/credit-cards-loans/act-now-avoid-christmas-debt-seven-top-tips/https://abcnews.go.com/Business/wireStory/holiday-savings-build-funds-fast-65876883 See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
