Susan Wrubel is the executive producer behind films such as Maggie's Plan (starring Julianne Moore, Greta Gerwig, Ethan Hawk, Bill Hader, and Maya Rudolph) and Still Alice (also starring Julianne Moore, who took home the Oscar that year for the role, and Alec Baldwin). Susan is currently the executive director of Aspen Film, which organizes three annual film festivals, including the Oscar-qualifying Aspen Short Fest. What you will learn: Susan shares what her 4th year as an executive and artistic director for Aspen Film entails, and breaks down the details of the three film festivals they put on each year. She also discusses how they had to pivot quickly after the pandemic began to make their festivals “virtual.” [0:00-10:58] The importance of short films for audiences, actors, creators, and film in general. The sense of community fostered in the Aspen festivals and how inspiring it is to see the raw talent of thousands of filmmakers every years. [10:58-21:46] Susan weighs in on the fairness of having big name actors (like Will Ferrell) or directors (like Zach Woods) attached to independent film festival contenders when they are competing for limited slows with lesser known actors and filmmakers. The balance Aspen Film tries to create in selecting a diverse range of films, and what the selection process is like going from 3,000 submissions to 80 chosen films in the Short Fest. [21:46-26:45] Going back to the start of her career, Susan recounts how she steadily worked her way to the top, starting at a PR department in Manhattan, to moving print copies, then moving to LA to work for Paramount, then to London, until she eventually found her way back to LA working as a producer. [26:45-36:40] The relevance of the Alliance Film Series Aspen put on in 2018, and other films that deal with heavy, topical issues. The difference between a producer vs. an executive producer in the film industry. [36:40-42:52] How Susan's formal education did (and didn't) prepare her for work in the film industry and the skills that can really only be learned with experience. What Susan hopes film festivals will look like in 2022. [42:52-51:20] Why some shorts are difficult to find streaming online, and the logistics behind why Aspen can't put the films online, but resources where many can be found. The opportunities that accessible platforms like YouTube can provide. [51:20-56:50] Resources: Susan Wrubel's: LinkedIn, IMDb Aspen Film website

Behind the scenes you bring a ton of expertise and value to the table. And when you’re marketing your business, you might want to showcase that expertise—whatever your unique combination of skills and talents you have that make your business, well, YOURS—like it’s the only thing that makes you different. But what you might not know is that positioning yourself as the expert of all the things might work against you. That’s why it’s essential to reposition your work by narrowing in on who you want to work with and what you want to help them do. When we repositioned our agency-style branding company, we went from serving huge clients to only selling Brandups to 1-3 service businesses. The work was almost entirely the same but the process in which we delivered it, who it was for, and what it was called were all more specific. Today’s guest, Susan Boles, went through a similar experience. The way she presents herself has evolved over the years; however, the core of the work hasn’t changed all that much at all. Susan is a Virtual CFO and Finance and Operations Strategist for agencies, consultants & coaches at ScaleSpark and she's on a mission to help founders build sustainable, resilient businesses that punch above their weight. She's also the host of the Break the Ceiling podcast, the show that breaks down unconventional strategies you can use to save time, boost your profit, and increase your operational capacity. Tune into this episode to hear: How Susan went from hating sales and struggling to explain what she did to using her lead product to close clients in 20 minute conversations The difference between listening to client opinions of how you should run your business, and responding to client needs you know you can solve How Susan brings knowledge on a lot of different topics to the table, and yet keeps her positioning of her brand narrow and tight so people can easily understand what she does and who she’s for Learn more about Susan Boles: scalespark.co Connect with Susan on LinkedIn Follow Susan on Instagram Follow Susan on Twitter Learn more about Pia: The Show Your Business Who's Boss Crash Course Start reading the first chapter of my book Piasilva.com

Did you know that 2.3B people in the world seek help for skin issues every year? Two-thirds of these cases are evaluated by non-specialists and the shocking statistic is that 50% of these cases are misdiagnosed. It's a challenge because there are not enough dermatologists and most physicians only spend one week learning dermatology in medical school. So, what if you could leverage AI and computer vision to help physicians quickly and accurately identify skin conditions. It sounds like a perfect use case for AI and this is exactly what LuminDx is doing. The company recently closed a $2M seed round of funding led by Argon VC. In this episode of our podcast, we cover: * Advice for founders on how to give an awesome demo day pitch. * Susan's background story and her time in academia. * How Susan's diagnosis with melanoma, when she was 22 years old, led to the creation of LuminDx. * All of the details on LuminDx and the evolution of the company. * Her experience raising funding as a female founder. * And so much more. A marketing strategist for over 30 years, Susan Baier founded Audience Audit in 2009 to help organizations understand their best audiences based on attitudes and needs rather than just demographics or purchase behavior. She develops custom segmentation research for marketers and agencies around the world, supporting their efforts to create marketing initiatives that are more relevant, more efficient, and more impactful. What you’ll learn about in this episode: How Susan and her team conduct studies and use the organic data they have collected to identify common, shared attitudes between respondents and identify patterns Susan breaks down the four categories of thought leader audience and shares how they came to these identification labels How the information discovered through the study can be used to better identify, reach, and be helpful and relevant to your audience How the results indicated that 62% of people surveyed would be more likely to recommend a business service provider if that provider is also a thought leader What key lessons the results from the survey offer about the importance of thought leadership, marketing, and their impact Why trust is a vital key for connecting with your audience and all four categories of thought leader audiences Why saying that you are a thought leader doesn’t mean you actually are, regardless of your audience or your content, and why trust is the determining factor Why it is important to remember that you can’t be an expert at everything and that you need to focus on your niche Why navigating times of crisis successfully requires a “relentless focus” on your target audience and being helpful How tailoring your message to each of the four distinct groups can help you engage your audience better and can help your message resonate Resources: Edelman Trust Barometer Special Report: Trust and the Coronavirus: https://bit.ly/2OJNapv Website: https://audienceaudit.com/ LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/susanbaieraz/ Additional Resources: Sell With Authority by Drew McLellan and Stephen Woessner: https://amzn.to/39y7x13 Predictive ROI Free Resource Library: https://predictiveroi.com/resources/ Stephen Woessner’s LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/stephenwoessner/

So many working in post-production around the world are obsessed with making the transition from being an assistant to being an editor. But does the journey end once you’re sitting in the editor’s chair? Or has the journey just begun? Editor and director Susan Vaill, ACE (Space Force, Gray’s Anatomy, This Is Us) has been helping to answer these questions as a mentor to many in scripted entertainment in Hollywood, and she’s become so passionate about the subject of helping assistant make the transition (and stick the landing, so to speak) that she even recently lead an Editor’s Guild panel titled “Bumped Up: The Leadership Workshop for New Editors.” So what are the most important questions that assistants who’ve recently been promoted into the editor’s chair don’t know to ask? What surprises might come their way they aren’t prepared for? What politics should they be aware of? What soft skills are necessary to build relationships and get invited back to jobs in the future? And if you haven’t made the transition yet but you are oh so close!!!, then what differentiates you from other people vying for the same position (especially if they have more experience than you)? What can you do to stand out? NOTE: This interview was conducted shortly before the pandemic struck (early March, 2020), so as you’re listening keep that in mind as we discuss her upcoming panels and general networking strategies. Want to Hear More Episodes Like This One? » Click here to subscribe and never miss another episode Here's What You'll Learn: The fun story of how Susan and her twin sister ended up in a classic Double Mint Gum commercial in the ’80s. Susan’s amazing origin story and how just ONE experience with deck to deck editing in high school gave her the power to “see the matrix” and recognize editing ‘tricks’ in films & television shows early on in life. How a documentary job 20 years ago directly led to her working on Space Force today. The pivotal moment where Susan realized she had a lot more to offer than what was on her resume. And how she leveraged her unique perspective, background, and personality to make her resume so compelling that it jumpstarted her career. Hot Tip: Inject your personality into your resume! How Susan’s passion and life experiences motivated her to spearhead the panel on moving from Assistant Editor to Editor called ‘Bumped Up: the Leadership Workshop for New Editors’. Why the most common question she gets at her panels may surprise you. What compels Susan to put on these panels and give back to people in the industry. How she thinks about the difficulty of Assistant Editors moving to Editor in the current environment where they aren’t really gaining the creative skills it requires. Why Editors have to be proactive about mentoring their Assistant Editors to get the next generation ready to be our peers. The benefits of making a habit of getting away and taking lunch together. Why it’s so important to create a really comfortable, safe working place of your edit bay. F.A.I.L. = First Attempt in Learning. NOTE: Susan’s panel is limited to 30 participants, but they’ll do them every 3 months. Keep an eye on MPEG's events calendar page. Susan's Full Bio: At 62 years young, Susan Goodkind Wideman is a mom, a life design coach, an elder law & estate planning attorney, an entrepreneur, a widow, a divorcee, an empty-nester, a Yooper, a dog lover, a cross-country skier, a mountain biker, and a baby boomer. Susan graduated from Cornell University with a degree in Design and Environmental Analysis and went on to work as Editorial Assistant at Industrial Design Magazine. From there, she was hired by Herman Miller, Inc. as a marketing communications specialist. When her department at Herman Miller was eliminated, she spent time as a pharmaceutical rep—work she did not enjoy. So, motivated by the promise of prestige and stability, Susan decided to go to law school at 33. Three years after finishing law school, she opened a successful Elder Law & Estate Planning practice. Her practice grew, she took on a partner, and they became well-known and respected. About five years ago at the time of this recording, Susan was finding herself angry, irritable and short-tempered. She worked more, slept less, and in 2018, she burned out. While law was lucrative and she provided a valuable service to her clients, it didn’t make her happy. When she started exploring her options, she found Women Who Went for It! and was so inspired that she reached out to me (Sara McArdle) for one-on-one coaching. As a result of the work we did together, Susan realized the imbalance in her life, and decided to train to be a coach, herself. In 2019, Susan founded Goodkind of Life, a life design coaching business supporting baby boomers & midlifers who are struggling in the second half of life like she did. She understands their grief, loneliness, hopelessness, anxiety, and depression because she’s been through it. Through Goodkind of Life, Susan helps her clients understand and manage their thoughts and feelings, connect with their core values, and create a life worth living. Here are some of the big topics we talked about… CrisMarie and Susan’s individual stories of coming through stress, conflict, & serious illness, and the beauty of intuition and connectivity which helped them get through How Susan uncovered “huge amounts of conflict in her own life that she hadn’t been dealing with” and the span of 10 years that she turned chaos & conflict around fully In CrisMarie & Susan’s Voice CrisMarie: “As a rower at the University of Washington, I listened to what was drawing me forward. Meeting Susan was an inner voice listening - I was really paying attention then! I continued to make better and better choices as I made that pivot later in my life. I got healthier and happier from learning to trust the inside voice vs trying to please people on the outside.”Susan: “I became committed to surfacing conflict. The beauty and the depth of what can happen when you turn towards that which seems hard and difficult! Totally transformational things can come out of that.”CrisMarie: “I took the fall for a failed project when I didn’t speak up. I knew then and there, ‘I’ve got to figure out how to speak up to power because this is a career-limiting move.’ That was a key transformational point for me around conflict.” Connect with CrisMarie & Susan Website Book Website Instagram Facebook

Susan Jamieson, award-winning interior designer out of Richmond, VA, joins the show to talk about her brand Bridget Beari, her new line of wallpapers, and how her Southern upbringing gave her a foundation for the warm and imaginative style we see today. Susan also talks about the importance of knowing the mood you are trying to create, why we shouldn’t be afraid to use different whites, and her effective and practical steps of mixing patterns together. What You’ll Hear on This Episode: Trials of a $600+ power bill, boxwood hedge trimmers, and a broken dishwasher. Triumphs of outsourcing yard work, an outdoor bench, and dish towel upgrades. How Susan’s business Bridget Beari has expanded from design to home furnishings to paint and wallpaper. Wallpaper is having a major moment, and Susan gives her thoughts on why it’s here to stay and not something to be afraid of. Susan’s line takes the guesswork of picking the right color for the client’s specific design and needs. Susan loves pushing boundaries and making each project unique to the client based on their taste and the architecture. How growing up in the south affected her taste and gave her a foundation of working in a Southern style with warmth and hospitality. How to use texture and contrast when working without color, and why it’s okay to not match whites. Why neutrals can sometimes be harder to work with than color, and the three main things to think about before you should even pick the color. The importance of identifying the mood one is trying to create when picking a direction for fabrics, textures, and colors of a room. Mentioned In This Episode Harringdons Alys Beach Bridget Beari Bridget Beari Colors Susan Jamieson @bridgetbeari Ballard Designs Decorating Dilemmas: Susan thinks a round entry foyer is amazing, and she would put a round rug and a beautiful lacquered table in the middle with an even larger statement chandelier. She also suggests making it even more Spanish, and adding some jewel box color with crisp white trim to give it even more umph. Susan would start with balancing the light on both levels, including a lamplight and light in the foyer. She would add a surface fixture outside the front door and maybe a pair of lamps depending on your mood. We love the idea of several fixtures that are grouped together.
Why We Love Susan: For over 30 years, people from all over the world have experienced Susan’s gifts first-hand both in private sessions and in workshops. Susan is not only an intuitive, she’s also a writer and a mom. She writes extensively on what it’s really like to do the work she does, in addition to sharing the inside scoop on her very full human life. Word on the street is that she’s also a pretty decent wannabe comedienne, which comes in handy raising her sons who are way smarter and way funnier than she is. On the Pod, We Discuss: What an Intuitive is and how Susan works with people How Susan came to understand she was intuitive and had the ability to read others The difference between Susan’s experience as an Intuitive and everyone else’s experience of the world The difference between clairvoyance, empathy, and mediumship Why self-care is important for her, and how she goes “off the clock” to turn off the downloads Why being an Intuitive, in terms of a career, can be marginalized or seen as entertainment and why it’s problematic The common reasons people go to work with Susan and what they’re looking for What a session with Susan looks like and what people can expect What specifically she sees an Intuitive (it’s not everything) and the various degrees to which things are clear Why the coaching she gives may be different for people at different ages Why slowing down and living intuitively can be more effective than being busy and going at full speed & power Susan’s definition of intuition Why intuition may be marginalized as a result of being associated with the divine feminine, despite it being a gender-neutral ability Why parenting is the best hands-on training for developing and trusting intuition How we can encourage a more intuitive experience for children, rather than excluding it over other types of knowledge The type of meditation Susan uses in her own life and developed for her clients to foster an intuitive experience The tools we can use to embrace our own intuition in our lives Why we don’t always get clarification around the reason we get a specific intuitive feeling (for example, why we should or shouldn’t go on a trip or rent an apartment or go on a second date) How to differentiate between anxiety/paranoia/fear and an intuitive hit Spiritual creativity: the difference between willfully manifesting something and allowing intuition to flow and how they’re related The first steps to take to get in tune with your intuition And so much more Helpful Links: Visit Susan’s website to connect with her, book a call or read her blog Follow Susan on Instagram Follow Susan on Facebook View more info and show notes at wellnesslately.com/podcast

In 2006, Susan Conley was 42 years old and married to an addict whose well-being she valued above her own. Though she had never longed for a pony or studied horses before, one day she suddenly, inexplicably, felt drawn to find a barn so she could ride. In her new memoir, Many Brave Fools, Susan explores topics including addiction, dysfunction and codependent relationships—and shares the story of how horses helped her to navigate the aftermath of her unhealthy marriage and subsequent loss of identity. Susan quickly learned that riding was both harder and easier than anything she had done before. Though Susan had read countless self-help books and completed 12 step programs, she realized that the time she spent at the barn had transformed her the most. More than just evolving from a green rider to one capable of tackling the competitive arena, Susan recognized that horses had also triggered a change in her mind, body and spirit. Riding and interacting with horses helped Susan to rediscover herself, eventually emerging as a self-confident woman ready to embark on the next phase of life. Susan holds a master of philosophy degree in Irish theatre studies from Samuel Beckett Centre, Trinity College, an honors degree in psychology and a diploma in equine-assisted therapy and learning. She is the author of Drama Queen, The Fidelity Project, and the soon to be re-released The Magic Mischief. Susan is based in Dublin, Ireland, where she is currently at work on her next horse book and a new paranormal/historical romance series. Topics of Discussion: [:18] About today’s episode. [1:13] Susan’s first experience riding horses... in her 40s. [2:22] What it felt like first going into a lesson barn later in life. [6:34] Susan’s epiphany of how to write her memoir, Many Brave Fools. [11:13] The therapeutic impact horses can have on a person and how Susan came to realize this. [13:40] How Susan chose her book’s title, Many Brave Fools. [16:58] Susan distinguishes the difference between a bad relationship vs. a codependent one. [18:52] How being in a toxic relationship affected Susan. [22:05] Susan speaks about the paradigm shift that occurred when she put herself into the world of horses and horse-people, which she knew absolutely nothing about. [24:45] The correlations between human relationships and horse relationships, and how they have affected her riding. [27:41] How Susan drew the funny connection between the quantity of excrement in her life and in the barn! [31:36] The great metaphor for life Susan learned through horses. [35:23] The importance of riding in circles — and why Susan decided to open her book by exploring this topic. [38:35] Susan’s ideas about compromise vs. expectation, both while riding and in human relationships. [41:18] About next week’s episode of Because of Horses. [42:50] To what degree does Susan find herself accepting limits in other people the way she accepts them in the horse she has been riding? [47:16] Insights Susan has gleaned over the years that could prove helpful to others in their own lives — personally or in the barn! [50:42] How Susan’s equine evolution parallels her internal evolution. [55:28] Susan shares a bit of information on her new horse series! Welcome to the show, Healthpreneurs! We’ve got a special guest on the show for you today for our Client Deep Dive segment. Susan Gleaton is a registered dietician with an integrative and functional nutrition background. She helps her client overcome the inconvenience, overwhelm, and anxiety related to GI and digestive disturbances by getting to the root cause and fixing it. Her main concern is her mindset around charging premium pricing. She feels like she’s always wanted to help those in need – whether they can pay what she’s worth or not – and finds herself losing confidence when charging more. Remember, people will find a way to pay for what they need – if they believe they need it and are feeling the pain of not making a change. And, the greater the investment, the more likely you are to get clients that are truly committed. It’s a win-win. Tune in to hear how Susan (and you!) can get paid what you’re worth and deliver the best results. In this episode, Susan and I discuss: Her mindset around charging clients what she’s worth. The cost of a client’s pain. Why not doing anything is the real cost of inaction. How to frame a high price to your client. How to describe what you do. How she feels about our program. 1:00 – 6:00 - Introducing Susan and her biggest issue 6:00 – 9:00 - Breaking down how to frame your price 9:00 – 14:00 - A roleplaying example and making the best program for your client 14:00 – 19:00 - Spending more, serving more, charging more 19:00 – 22:30 - Being able to describe what you do well 22:30 – 24:30 - The doorway to starting a conversation with a prospective client 24:30 – 27:30 – How Susan has benefitted from our program.

How can art help heal people from trauma? Susan Greif interprets drawings to help her clients form a healthier relationship with themselves and in turn a healthier relationship with others. I recently heard Susan speak at a speaker salon and was inspired by her message and her work with the children of holocaust survivors. She believes that art makes thoughts and emotions more perceptible so we can actually see our subconscious. Then we can understand what keeps us stuck and make shifts in our lives. I notice in my students that their personalities are in their art. If they paint very tightly it’s usually because they’re uptight about something. We talk about what art can tells us about a person, her process of working with a client and why art can reveal things that talking won’t. In this podcast, you will discover... (02:58) Susan’s work with the children of holocaust survivors and intergenerational PTSD (04:12) What PTSD is and how in affects people (06:47) How the PTSD can be passed onto the children through epigenetics (08:55) What a session with Susan looks like (10:00) The art medium the clients have access to for their first drawings (11:04) That the quality of the drawing does not matter (11:30) An example of what anxiety can look like in a drawing (12:26) What the colour choice in a drawing can mean (13:28) How the session continues after the client has completed a drawing (14:01) How Susan does a similar process with individuals and groups (15:36) Trying to understand a picture drawn by a 57 year old woman (17:05) How Susan helps her client stay in the moment with their drawings (17:32) Continuing the story of the woman’s drawing (20:09) Looking at relationships differently (21:45) What the therapy looks like after the first drawing and how she uses journaling (23:30) That drawings can reveal things that people might hide or omit in talk therapy For full show notes, go to schulmanart.com/25 ++++++++++++++++++++

Wingnut Social: The Interior Design Business and Marketing Podcast
Sometimes social media feels like shouting into the void. Or even when you have an audience who’s responding to what you’re posting, it can feel like a beast that always needs to be fed. Sometimes you need to take a break from the pretty wallpaper photos and try storytelling. If you can tell a story on social media, then you can connect authentically and emotionally with an audience. Sometimes that’s a story about you, sometimes it’s a story about a client, but it’s always a story that people feel they can relate to. Today’s guest on the Wingnut Social podcast has a story like none other. Susan Wintersteen runs Savvy Interiors in San Diego, California, but perhaps her most amazing work comes from her nonprofit, Savvy Giving by Design. Susan and her team redo spaces for children and families facing medical crises, often kids facing the long road of cancer treatments. Susan has built a community by telling the stories of Savvy Giving by Design’s work. On this episode, she tells Darla and Natalie how she discovered her method of social media storytelling, how she crafts her stories step by step, and how she navigates her clients’ privacy when telling these stories. What You’ll Hear On This Episode of Wingnut Social [3:15] New info for our event at LuAnn Live [6:45] Darla presses record [7:35] How Susan started Savvy Giving by Design [8:45] Where storytelling comes in with Savvy Giving by Design [12:37] The nuts and bolts of a Susan Wintersteen story [14:53] How social media is different from press releases [18:29] How to stay consistent with storytelling in your social media [21:01] Build trust to enrich your storytelling [26:05] What to do when the story goes the way you don’t want [28:10] How to have a conversation with a client about sharing photos [31:54] How to get involved with Savvy Giving by Design [35:57] Whut up, Wingnut? Storytelling through Social Media About four years ago, Susan was introduced to a friend of a friend whose daughter was diagnosed with cancer. So Susan and her friend raised money to redo the kid’s room to make it a little more comfortable and fun as she underwent a year of chemotherapy. From there, Susan started her nonprofit where they makeover spaces for children facing a medical crisis. Storytelling became a part of Savvy Giving by Design from the get-go. Susan had built a community on Facebook, they were able to raise $6,000 in three days, and from the jump she kept the community looped into the process. And as the people in the community got to know Susan and her voice, they started to respond to that. How Storytelling Helps You Stand Out Darla asked Susan how she constructs a story on social media for Savvy Giving by Design, and she takes a really fascinating approach. As she says, every story has a hero and a guide, and she considers herself the guide. And when they start telling a story, they start what she calls “pebbling” before “hitting with a brick.” So that might mean posting that she’s about to go meet with a family, or showing a little bit about what’s coming up for that particular project, and then gradually building from there. One of the things Susan struggles with is information overload, making sure that her community knows what she’s working on, and that there’s no confusion between stories. So that means she creates specific anecdotes that help people identify with and relate to the individual stories of the kids and families facing a medical crisis. That also impacts the tone of her social media. Rather than writing press releases, Susan is trying to tell stories like she would to her friends, to connect with her audience on an emotional level. When we are intentional moms, it assists us in becoming less-stressed moms. When we bring our babies home from the hospital, our dream is to raise them in a happy and healthy home. But, from the time that we get pregnant or we announce plans to adopt, others begin giving us their opinions about what we should or shouldn't do. If we're not careful, other people's input will confuse us and add a lot of stress to our already busy lives. Today, I'm continuing my fun and freeing conversation with my friend, Susan Seay. If you listened to part one of our interview, the podcast ended with Susan saying that she hit the wall after the birth of her seventh child. "I became so burdened with my efforts to be a “good mom” and trying to do all the things a “good mom” should do. My list of “should’s” was so long I was ready to give up. In fact, I did give up. I announced it one night at dinner with a simple. I announced to my husband: “I’m done!” - Susan Seay, speaker and author During this episode, Susan shares about the crucial conversations that she had with her husband, Ron about their individual expectations of what it meant to be a good mom and a good dad. In Susan's effort to be a great mom and Ron's drive to be a great dad, the couple discovered that their unspoken expections actually drove a wedge in their relationship with each other. As you listen to Susan talk about how they worked through this challenge to their marriage and family, you'll love her sense of humor and insight. Ultimately, Ron and Susan discovered the key to reshaping their family and unifying them for the future. What you'll hear in this episode: How core values can keep your family focused and help you make decisions with less conflict; Why Susan always lets her kids let go of a hug first; How Susan uses technology to stay connected with her kids; LINKS FROM TODAY'S SHOW Susan Seay Website | Facebook | Choosing Your Values Podcast About Susan… Through the “Mentor 4 Moms” Podcast and the relatable style found in her book The Intentional Parent: Parenting On Purpose When Life Gets Busy, you get a sense of Susan’s heart to provide encouragement to moms combined with helpful practical tools. Does literature have an influence on your artwork? Where do you draw your inspiration? How can we tell stories through our art in a compelling and engaging way? My guest is Susan Lichtman, an accomplished artist and educator who has been shaped by her love of literature. In our conversation, Susan opens up about how she got started as an artist, the role storytelling plays in her artwork, how she constructs a painting, projects she is currently working on, and much more. I can’t wait for you to get a glimpse of Susan’s amazing artwork and her fascinating perspective! Observational painting and storytelling. Do you have a favorite observational painter? I’ve been exposed to so many wonderful observational painters throughout my career that I could never choose just one! Susan Lichtman is an immensely talented observational painter who has dedicated the last 30 years of her career to painting various rooms and angles in her home. Susan is an absolute inspiration for her ability to tell a compelling story through her work and keep the subject matter engaging after all those years. Make sure to check out the images of Susan’s artwork located at the end of this post! Celebrating a love for literature. It is really amazing how much literature and painting are so closing linked through the ages and even today. As an avid reader, I find myself continually inspired and drawn to literature, in fact, I believe it makes me a better artist. In our conversation, Susan Lichtman was kind enough to open up about her love for literature and how it’s influenced her career. The authors that Susan zeroed in on in her early career were Marcel Proust and Fyodor Dostoevsky. Fusing her love for literature and art, Susan currently co-teaches a course with her friend and Dostoevsky expert, Robin Feuer Miller. After they study the literature, Susan leads the class to make art in response to their reading. I loved hearing about this innovative approach to art and education and I know that artists like you will enjoy it too! Get to know yourself as an artist. As you progress through life you realize that with each passing year start to become more and more comfortable in your own skin. Does this same logic apply to your role as an artist? Don’t think of it as a zero-sum game, it’s not a yes or no question, your development as an artist takes time. Give yourself room to breathe and experiment, cut yourself some slack! As you evolve and change over the years, allow that same fluidity and sense of discovery to apply to your art career too. At the end of the day, listen to your gut and follow your intuition! Putting a mirror up to society. What is the role of the artist in our culture today? Have you ever really stopped to consider this question? It seems that now, more than ever, challenging artistic voices are needed to create a contrast to some of the darker corners of society and politics. Embracing creativity and disruption are political activities that need to increase. Does every artist need to have a political opinion and message? No. I find it immensely hopeful that as artists we can be part of the solution, cultivating a robust and diverse community where more and more voices are welcomed. Outline of This Episode [0:55] I introduce my guest, Susan Lichtman. [2:50] How Susan got started as an artist. [11:00] Susan talks about storytelling and observational painting in her artwork. As entrepreneurs and creatives, we know the feeling of pouring our whole heart into our work. Of devoting all our attention to the project at hand in pursuit of something greater than ourselves. How do we balance that quest for our best work with the desire to nurture our long-term, loving relationships? How do we make room for the people we love—and love us back? What if the qualities necessary to sustain our long-term, loving relationships are the very same qualities we use to sustain our commitment to the creative path? On this episode of Tracking Wonder, Jeffrey is joined by Susan Piver, renowned Shambhala Buddhist teacher, New York Times bestselling author, and founder of the world’s largest virtual mindfulness community, the Open Heart Project. Susan shares the significance of bringing a constant curiosity to our loving relationships, explaining how the practice of love demands an attention not on the extraordinary, but on the familiar and ordinary. She offers insight around the four noble truths of love, the challenges of standing in love versus falling in love, and the idea of meeting instability together. Listen in to understand why long-term love doesn’t have to be in battle with one or both partners’ devotion to creative work and learn and learn how mindfulness is the practice of love. Today’s interview with Susan Lacke is a bit unusual because, while I prepared all the questions, they were sent to Susan in advance and read to her by someone else in a recording studio. Why you ask? Because Susan is deaf, which provided some logistical issues for us. Despite those, this is a completely different and delightful interview. Running has reminded Susan that she is not perfect and not the best, both lessons she believes are important for her perfectionist self. It gives her an outlet and reminder to always be her true and honest self not some view of who she should be. Her friend Carlos, who inspired the title of her book believed in her and that she could change from an overweight smoker and inspired her to get busy and get on with changing her life. Carlos managed to change her mind from thinking exercisers were a cult that was not something she wanted to belong to. He made her realize that it was herself she was afraid of. It made her realize that if he was so willing to fight cancer, she was determined to stick by his side with anything he needed from her. I do want to give you a small heads up that this episode contains some colorful language that might not be suitable for small children so you may wish to find a solo time or listen with headphones. Today’s Guest Susan Lacke is a writer for several running and outdoors publications, including Women’s Running, Success, Competitor and Triathlete. She is the author of “Life’s Too Short to go So F*cking Slow”. What you will learn about: How Susan got involved with running and IronMan competitions How her experiences have translated into her writing and trying to make others believe they also could do it How Susan’s parents instilled in her a sense of self reliance How her friend Carlos’ life and struggle with cancer inspired her to write a book so that she could remember him. How the struggles in training bring out the vulnerable side of us and in some ways the worst of us, so it allows us to open up. Because our training partners have already seen us at our worst. Inspirational Quotes: Be the best you can be with what you have. It is the people in your life who will inspire you to change; the sports don’t change you, the people do. The pain is the best part, because it lets you know you are alive. I usually cover a lot of heavy stuff in this show, but as always my main goal is to bring out the light in any dark situation. Today, let’s just stand in the light for a little bit; let’s laugh for therapy's sake and roll with whatever crazy, zany hijinks the universe wants to throw at us. This episode is all about why finding the light in the dark is essential to our personal well-being. It’s time to talk comedy. Humor is healing. This is the anthem of my guest Susan Stewart. Susan is a Toronto-based comedian and speaker who has walked her path of darkness but has come out laughing. Susan will be the first to tell you that even the most uncomfortable or unfortunate circumstances can become humorous with time. The real, deep, heavy topics that most folks want to skirt around are her comedy bread and butter. I love that she plays so lightheartedly with the duality of comedy and tragedy. What she creates with her stories is something truly beautiful and truly human. In this episode, Susan and I commiserate about so many things including how hard it can be to parent our children sometimes, struggles with mental health, and the strength of the communities that rally around us. Above all else, we will celebrate the fact that the darkness has not won. Light wills out and life finds a way. You ready to laugh? Listen in to hear Susan and I talk about: Feeling amazing on the outside (thanks to the Crisis Diet) but falling apart on the inside. Why humor is such an important component in telling our truths. Standup comedy, mental health, and the ability to stop blaming external circumstances. Susan's windy path back to humor by way of working for the government. Misadventures in parenting and Susan's hilarious re-enactment of her partner's daughter. What prompted Susan to write a book. HINT: It's not what I was expecting! How Susan helped me name who I wanted to be based on what I liked to do as a child..I'm a dabbler! And I LOVE that about myself. Susan’s advice for those who might be struggling and feeling alone. Time Stamped Show Notes: 00:39 – Susan’s background 00:40 – She’s been in EO for 10 years, has had her own business for the last 15 years, and has grown from an agency run out of her apartment to being able to see it flourish 01:00 – She can now watch her business succeed while she talks about what she’s learned; it’s amazing what start-ups can teach large corporates 01:15 – Her passion is to teach big companies what small companies have known all along 01:20 – How Susan started; 2 weird starts 01:27 – A horrible blind date with a senior editor of Forbes magazine; he introduced her to the world of PR while she was an epidemiologist at the center for disease control 02:09 – They became good friends and she would rewrite pitch letters; she eventually left the CDC and became a PR person 03:08 – Everything shifted when 9/11 happened; their biggest client that put them on the map was on the plane that hit the World Trade Center 03:25 – That founder was also her boss’s best friend and he lost the interest to do PR after that 03:55 – 9 months later her boss asked if she wanted to buy the business for $1 Million / $100k/year for the next 10 years 04:30 – She declined but opened her own agency when the other one closed down in 2002; she ran it out of her 550 sq. ft. apartment with an intern 05:10 – Business Challenges 05:20 – Overwhelm; you don’t realize how many people and how much time goes into running a company when you work for someone else 05:40 – Mental implications; marketing, bookkeeping, sales, etc. and keeping up with all of it 05:50 – 6 months later she ended up in the emergency room (the same place she had worked) after a week of chest pains 06:10 – She saw her old boss; he said to stop doing PR, it was killing her because she had internalized so much stress 06:35 – Business was going well, but she needed processes and people; her boyfriend at the time gave her a proposal to work for her and improve Lotus Public Relationships 07:15 – She weighed the pros and cons; he offered to take a $150k salary cut to work for her, she was terrified because everything was unstable and he was a widower with two kids 08:00 – 15 years later, they are married, happy, and running the business together 08:20 – How was the first day working together? 08:28 – It was in the small apartment with heavy, hot 2002 laptops, shorts, towels on their laps for the laptop heat, and coffee overflowing in the kitchen 09:07 – Clients received great work and gave them referrals; they had a great feeder system 09:20 – A year later they moved into a small office across the street from Grand Central; her boyfriend could run from the office to the train in 3 minutes 09:56 – They started hiring full-time teams and within 3 years they hit $1 Million in revenue and were one of the fastest growing PR firms in the country 10:10 – She couldn’t have done it without her now husband 10:28 – Other people that have attributed to Susan’s success 10:33 – Staff along the way; expansions and contractions along the way have contributed to the people that have been there for her 11:20 – She has surrounded herself with EO members that she sees as mentors, friends; her lawyer and accountant help her determine if she’s living the life she wants 12:28 – Susan feels that she and her husband now have the life that they want 12:33 – The agency is running great, now she knows that she wants to give back and teach what she’s learned 12:43 – For the past 2 years she has spoken to 700 start-ups through Venture Out New York; international companies come to NY for a week to figure out how to succeed there 13:11 – She’s the first speaker they meet to find out how to establish credibility, tone, message, and buyer connection in the U.S. 14:20 – She now speaks at conferences all over the world 14:40 – Her talk: “Storytelling for Innovators and Disruptors” 14:50 – Goes into her journey of researcher to now working with tech companies 14:58 – How messages need to be developed through story: How do we create stories of biblical quality? 15:25 – How to create the founder’s story (prophet), a core group of early adopters (apostles), and how to take that message to market (user-generated content) 15:45 – The people will carry the message, but you must know how to make it spread 16:15 – How do we do the above? 16:33 – Reference to Simon Sinek “why” question in his Ted Talk; it’s not what or how you do what you do, it’s why 16:50 – Start-ups are consumed with product road maps and prospect conversations and leave themselves off the table 17:20 – You need to use tools or people whose strengths help you stay on track 18:05 – Ask: what are your strengths? What is it about you that makes you an entrepreneur in your field? 18:25 – Be 100% authentic by selling a part of yourself (authentic brand); get off the path of self-doubt and be yourself 19:35 – Figure out who will be your story carrier (Star Wars analogy) by being clear on whose life you’re making better 20:50 – How are you changing the customer’s life by being in it? 21:20 – Know the impact; a great product has personal ramifications 22:00 – Ask client, “Tell me how we’re making your life better.” (Über example) 23:40 – Sometimes what the customer loves isn’t fundamental 24:14 – Summary: Find out the “why,” authentic story, gain early adopters to believe what you believe, purchase, and tell people 25:40 – Get innovators and early adopters first then they’ll do the storytelling for you; evangelists become loyalists 26:20 – How do you find influencers/innovators/early adopters? 26:25 – Create a feedback loop, processes, and communicate with all your clients if you are a young company 27:18 – As the story grows and changes, people interact differently with it; let the brand adapt and change, and let customers run with it 27:45 – Create processes to collect data and a way for customers to talk back 27:58 – Have you created a way for customers to talk to one another (Dollar Shave Club example) 31:39 – If someone can’t hire a PR agency, what can they do? 31:47 – Susan’s talk, “The 7 Day PR Plan: How to Build your PR Plan in 7 Days Without Hiring an Expensive Agency Like Mine” 32:00 – She believes so many people need and deserve attention that will never hire a PR agency 32:19 – Susan’s “7 Day PR Plan” condensed 32:23 – Day One: Listen. Make sure you understand the journalist’s conversation before you pitch a reporter 32:35 – What is going on already in your space? Make a “Google Alert” for your top 5 competitors and their CEO, then you’ll get press coverage on your competitors 33:38 – Competitive intelligence is not for the CEO alone, make sure you share it with your team 33:56 – Day Two: Get Organized. Set up a Google Sheet that everyone in the office can access that has those articles, the name of the article, the reporter’s full name, Twitter handle, and email 34:19 – This is building a media list; get the processes in place to make those journalists your new best friends 34:45 – Day Three: Stalk...smartly! Stalk their social media accounts like Twitter and Instagram; Twitter is the media environment, follow your competitors (from another account and journalists from your personal account) 35:58 – Their bio gives personal information, you may have a lot in common with them 36:34 – Follow in silence for the first few weeks, then start complimenting them, opening up a conversation, and retweeting their stories 38:22 – Connect with the reporter on LinkedIn to get their email address 38:55 – Day 4: Newsify in True Anchorman Style 39:00 – Determine what is newsworthy in your world; figure out the message, determine what is headline-worthy, and see what that journalist finds newsworthy 39:40 – In the next 6 months, what are the 3 coolest things that are going to happen to your business that are worthy of being in the news? 40:00 – Examples: New rounds of funding, hiring a very senior level person, rolling out a new product, attacking a new market, expanding your current market, speaking at an event 40:40 – Find out your “news,” go back to your list of reporters, and pitch your “why” and story 41:20 – Day Five: Write your Pitch (no more than 100 words!) 41:59 – Come with respect, “every pitch is a gift,” and ask how you’ll make the journalist’s life better 42:36 – Think about how that pitch will transpire because there are 5 PR people for every 1 journalist: You’ll need a killer subject line to stand out 43:17 – The email should come from you identifying yourself as the one in power; this is just as important as your #1 sales prospect 43:39 – Make sure you’re current and know how the journalists compose their piece so you can compose your pitch accordingly; some love narrative, some love statistics, some use 3rd party experts 45:45 – Day Six: Get Ready for the Interview 45:50 – Make sure you have 3 key messages; no one can remember more than 3 things so say what you need to say in 3 bullet points 46:30 – 90% of your interviews will be by phone so smile, speak with passion, and get excited 47:21 – You want to stand out amongst all the phone interviews that journalist has; it may be the only opportunity you get to speak with that media outlet 47:56 – Follow-up: Take as much volume up on the page as possible to get the most clicks 48:10 – Pictures (360dpi at least), infographics, supporting media, linkable video, and background data give the journalist more to add to the piece 49:15 – Day 7: Share the Love 49:20 – Say thank you to the journalist, after the interview and after the piece comes out 49:50 – Share through your social channels and site, share with your mom, and use the press coverage in different ways 50:11 – Press coverage can be part of your email marketing campaigns and include links back to the journalists page so s/he gets credit and wants to do more pieces with you 50:57 – Show them that there’s momentum in your business and keep in touch for repeat business 52:00 – Susan’s “Why” 52:04 – To deliver amazing experiences with content that helps people create an impact on their world 52:15 – She connects with people and wants to share in a way that moves people to action with energy and humor 52:50 – She did stand up at a Comedy Club; when you can give people the experience of a lifetime, they become the best leaders they can be 53:38 – Advice for entrepreneurs: Be vulnerable, be willing to say “I don’t know” and people will rise to help Key Points: Know your “why,” tell an authentic story, and let your early adopters do the storytelling for you. Follow Susan’s 7 Steps to build relationships with reporters and build your PR plan. Be vulnerable; be willing to say “I don’t know” and people will rise to help. One of the major hurdles online entrepreneurs face is that of scaling their business. How exactly do you generate the client base necessary to take your venture to the next level? Guest: Susan David, Ph.D. is a Psychologist on the faculty of Harvard Medical School; resilience expert, co-founder and co-director of the Institute of Coaching at McLean Hospital, CEO of Evidence Based Psychology, and author of Emotional Agility. Story: Growing up in South Africa, Susan lost her father at a young age. During this pivotal time, everyday heroes emerged in her life, helping to guide her through her grief as an experience of resilience and emotional agility. This became the foundation of her quest to understand and improve the human condition. Susan David resilienceBig idea(s): Instead of simply "pushing through" to positivity, there are practical ways that we can be with ourselves and our emotions that begin to activate our readiness potential, goal setting, and capability to make real change in our lives. Our emotions have evolved to help us survive in the world. If we push them aside, we lose our ability to respond effectively. Courage is not the absence of fear. Courage is being able to notice your fear and your disquiet and chose the right thing to do, in alignment with your values. You’d never guess: How Susan’s teacher’s "intervention" sparked her entire career and ultimately helped form her view of herself as resilient and capable in the world. Current passion project: Researching and teaching others about our emotions, hidden drivers, and below-the-radar impulses, and how they Ȋcontrolȋ us when we interact with the world and others around us. Interview with Publisher, Susan Daffron. Various surveys have shown that 80% of people want to write a book, yet most people never get beyond dreaming about being a published author. In this teleseminar Susan Daffron explains how she self published 8 books in less than 18 months without using a ghostwriter. (In fact, she did almost all of the work herself.) You'll learn: * How Susan got beyond her big "stuckness" on two book projects that had been languishing in old discarded Word files for literally years. * How to find and repurpose writing you may already have in other forms. * How to determine if you can actually sell your book once it's finished. * Which areas of the publishing process you can outsource, depending on your skills (and one you definitely should). * How to publish your book "on the cheap" and avoid the stigma of subsidy/vanity presses. * Numbers and acronyms you need to know about once you enter the wild and wooly world of self-publishing. If you've got a book project you wish you could finish, join Susan Daffron and take your first step toward making that dream a reality.
