Dr Howell's most recent consulting work was for the US Power Lifting Association in helping them look into the science of trans athletes competing and helping them formulate their position based on science. Dr. Howell is a former Professor and Ph.D. faculty member in the School of Health and Human Services at Trident University. Dr. Howell holds a Ph.D. in Health Sciences from Trident University, a Medical Degree from BMU School of Medicine, a Master of Science in Sport and Health Science from American Military University, a Bachelor of Science in Sport and Health Science from American Military University, and a Mechanical Engineering degree from Forsyth Technical College. He is an epidemiologist, exercise physiologist, and mechanical engineer with current research interests in the long-term effects of therapeutic androgen use and endocrine disrupting chemicals exposure. He is a recipient of the prestigious AMU Academic Scholar Award (2016) and has worked on two major NIH and DoD funded studies at Wake Forest University: Strength Training for Arthritis Trial (START) and The Runners and Injury Longitudinal Study (TRAILS). Questions discussed: Do men who have transitioned to women have an advantage in sports over biological females. If so can it be quantified? Laurel Hubbard transitioned at age 35 now she is 43 in competing in the Olympics as a trans athlete in the superheavyweight women's division. Prior to that Laurel competed as a man. While being an elite athlete as a man Laurel was never a world-class athlete. Based on your knowledge does Laurell have a significant advantage over her female competitors. Does this advantage cover a whole range of sports? Is the testosterone produced in men and women naturally the same or different? Based on XX or XY chroma zones chromosomes how is testosterone processed in the body, especially at lower levels? What are the effects of giving men estrogen? Does it impede the effects of testosterone? Is there any difference in terms of putting on in maintaining muscle mass? Especially if the testosterone levels are the same. Can you talk about routine benefits retained benefits of steroids after they have been no longer after they have no longer used? Generational levels of testosterone are going down. The labs have just dropped their reference range from mid-1100 to 964. This is a drop of around 12%. The lower reference ranges have also been dropped to 264. According to Dr Keith Nichols those ranges were in the 1500s 15 years ago. He also stated that men in their 20 and 30 are showing up in his clinic with lower baseline levels than those in their 50 and 60s. What are you seeing developmentally in boys and young men these days? What is their prognosis? Do you see this lower testosterone level as a factor in gender dysphoria? Many people with gender dysphoria report depression. Do you believe this could be related to low T? Levine and others report testicular developmental issues in some young men now. Is there a qualitative difference in naturally produced T? You've earned it.Dr. Candace Bio:Originally from Detroit, Michigan, Dr. Holmes followed in her parents' footsteps and matriculated at Xavier University of Louisiana in New Orleans. At Xavier University, Dr. Holmes earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology with a minor in Chemistry. While studying at Xavier, Dr. Holmes knew that she wanted to become a physician. What she also knew was that she did not want to spend her days writing prescriptions. While researching health care careers, she came across the chiropractic profession.The summer before her senior year in college, Dr. Holmes visited and shadowed chiropractors in her home city. She witnessed the power of chiropractic firsthand and was able to receive her first adjustment. Afterward, she went home and felt incredibly relaxed. She was so relaxed that she took a three hour nap which was the best nap that she had ever had! "This is why people get adjusted!" she said.From then on, Dr. Holmes was on a mission. She especially loved how chiropractic relied on the body's own ability to heal itself without the use of drugs or surgery. Today we welcome Dr Shungu Hilda M’gadzah. Shungu has more than 30 years of experience since qualifying as an educational psychologist in 1990. She is a Psychology Diversity and Inclusion Consultant and has a Doctorate in Emotional Intelligence. Her career includes working for 7 years in higher education teaching Post-graduate MSc Educational Psychology Students. She has worked as a psychologist within health, education and independent special schools and has been appointed to a number of consultant posts, including Head of Special Educational Needs and Disability. She is the co- founder of Psychologists on Boards. She has created the Six Stages Conceptual Framework for Understanding and Dealing with Racism designed for individuals and organisations. She has Chaired a number of Committees including the British Psychological Society's Division for Education and Child Psychologists. She has a number of journal and article publications including publication of her thesis on emotional intelligence in the UK Parliament's Children and young people’s mental health — the role of education. Alex always felt he was a creative but followed what his father wanted him to do and really struggled with life. He got the job he thought he wanted but was miserable, when he was then made redundant he hit rock bottom but a series of events lead him back to painting. Alex now paints in extreme locations, he says this is what taught him to creative everywhere. We are living through the greatest transition since The Industrial Revolution. The institutions upon which the modern world was created - health, finance, education, military - are dissolving around us. This can be disconcerting and disorienting. However, nature abhors a vacuum. So, what world would you like to fill the space being created? The last time we had an opportunity of this magnitude was after 9/11. We missed the opportunity then, because we didn't have the tech or the mindset to take advantage of this opportunity but now we do. We all have an ‘outer’ and an ‘inner’ game. The outer game is our identity, we access this through our five physical senses. As a society we mostly focus on this outer space, the physical, what we can see. The inner game is the ‘sixth sense’, our intuition. The key to unlocking our inner game is via purpose. Episode Main Points:1) It is vitally important that we are supportive of one another. We still have so much to overcome. All of the "isms" still exist and in this current climate are at the forefront. We must actively and collectively fight them.2) The work that Errika does to support our students in the K-16 space is super important but it doesn't get a lot of play. She is a connector of people, places, and organizations and what she does is connect people and organizations doing great things for OUR children with people and organizations who have funds and want to see change happen in OUR city and beyond. She's the one in rooms helping form narratives and straightening out ill-formed ones. She is a quiet Superhero in our midst. 3) Can we just talk about "the Nod?" All of us who attended a PWI know what "the nod" is and how important it was to us when we were there. I understand that it looks different from this generation of BIPOC students, however I can tell you that it meant a whole lot to me. Just the acknowledgement of "I see you", was somedays enough to allow me to continue on. The PWI journey can be a lonely one even with friends on campus. It get real tiring to always be the one or one of the few in classes everyday and to fight off microagressions and other stuff.Errika Moore Bio:Errika is a nonprofit executive with sales, marketing, organizational management and volunteer leadership experience. Dr. Quincy Brown Bio:Quincy Brown, Ph.D., is a Program Director for STEM Education Research at the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). Her project portfolio includes the Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship Program and investigating innovations in Preservice STEM teacher education, investigating STEM mentoring practices, and supporting the AAAS Emerging Researchers National Conference.She was previously a Senior Policy Advisor in the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy. There her portfolio included Agricultural Entrepreneurship, STEM Education, and the My Brother's Keeper STEM+Entrepreneurship initiatives. She spent two years an AAAS Science & Technology Policy Fellow at the National Science Foundation in the CISE Directorate. She earned her Ph.D. in Computer Science from Drexel University. She is a recipient of the Computing Community Consortium (CCC) CI Fellows Postdoctoral Research Fellowship award and was a National Science Foundation GK-12 and Bridge To the Doctorate Fellow.Dr. Brown was also a Professor of Computer Science at Bowie State University. It is left to you to figure out how best to exist in this world, unfortunately. 2) Professional networks ARE so important to helping Black women and other minority women in finding that balance and sense of self in this world3) The work that Iris and others are doing is soooooooooooooo important, however they cannot do it alone. Allies are needed, but not the superficial, surface level ones that don't actually mean what they say or do anything outside of saying meaningless words. We need people who are going to be in this fight to change this environment for the long haul. Dr. Iris Wagstaff Bio:She is a scientist, educator, mentor, researcher and STEM advocate. She currently serves as a STEM Program Director in the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Department of AAAS where I manage a $15 Million Dollar portfolio focused on broadening participation in STEM, workforce development ,and inclusive technology and innovation ecosystems. She served as a 2015-2017 AAAS Science and Technology Policy Fellow at the DOJ National Institute of Justice Office where I developed and led an agency-wide diversity and inclusion initiative. She is a native of Goldsboro, NC with a BS and MS in Chemistry from UNC-Greensboro and NC A&T State Universities respectively; and a PhD in Science Education from North Carolina State University. Iris worked as a research chemist at the Dow Chemical Company for 15 years leading analytical project teams and company-wide diversity initiatives. She has over 20 years of STEM outreach and advocacy developing informal science programs, mentoring, resourcing parents, leading k-12 STEM teacher professional development, and building strategic partnerships between industry, academia, and community organizations.She is also a social scientist with a research focus on examining factors that predict science self-efficacy, science identity, and STEM career intent in underrepresented/under-served youth populations. She serves on the Boards of several organizations that include the National Organization of Black Chemists and Chemical Engineers (NOBCChE), the Chemical Society of Washington (CSW), and Science, Engineering, and Math Links (SEM). She is an adjunct chemistry professor at UNC-Greensboro where she leads diversity and inclusion efforts to broaden participation in the chemical sciences. Podcast show notes are one of those tasks that you KNOW is essential, but you can never bring yourself to doing it, or doing it properly. This may be, and probably is, because you've never been told how important they are to using the power of Google. This is day 26 of my 31 Day Podcast Challenge Podcast show notes are nothing more than a blog post with an audio file attached. And they're also so much more than that. Show notes serve three main purposesThe first two serve existing listeners: 1 - To offer a summary of the episode's content – to persuade someone to listen, to remind a previous listener what was covered, and to offer easy reminders about what the episode is about to share with their friends, your potential new listeners. 2 - To offer links to resources, people or products that were mentioned. The last serves you, and those who have yet to listen: 3 - To attract new listeners through search traffic. That last one is the one most podcasters neglect, and is the most important part of creating great show notes. Many podcasters write up show notes that are nothing more than a very quick introduction paragraph, and then a list of the resources that were mentioned. That just serves your listener, covering #1 and #2. But, if that's all you do, you're missing an opportunity to grow your audience. A good set of show notes can attract potential new listeners when they appear in search results. How do you do that? Write a blog post that covers the same topic as the podcastThat blog post is a written version of the show. Not necessarily a direct transcript, but something created to be read. A transcript can be used to help write the blog, to help find specific details or “pull quotes” you need to include in the blog. It contains the same valuable information as the podcast, and encourages readers: “If you liked this, then listen to the podcast episode for even more.” Some people just can't find the time to do full blog-post style show notes every week. An alternative is to keep them short and forget about the search engine benefits. Just do a 50 word intro paragraph and then some resource links and related descriptions. Keep in mind, the long blog-post style format offers a lot more value in terms of content marketing. The show notes, acting like blog articles, will start to gain traffic. They're much more likely to be found and indexed in search results. As I like to say, you're giving each episode as much “Google juice” as you can. Can transcripts make great show notes?If you're short on time, it's worth considering transcriptions. You can pay around $1 per minute to have a full transcription done of any show. Some transcription services to consider are https://www.happyscribe.co/r/b98d8b9fe8 (Happy Scribe), https://sonix.ai/invite/mqppxdq (Sonix) and Trint. As a bonus, they provide search engine friendly content for your website with little extra time effort. Just a bit of cost. Beware though, the spoken word, especially unscripted or without an outline, often doesn't transcribe well. Unedited transcriptions can often be long and rambling. Most transcription services offer an additional charge to “clean” up your transcription so it's in better shape to use, or edit further for your own use as you see fit. If you don't have the time, or simply don't want to do your own podcast show notes, then you might want to outsource them altogether.
