Today we celebrate the topping out of the Habsburg empire. By the middle of the 16th century it reached its furthest extent as a political entity ruled by one man. Over the last 42 episodes we have seen this family of minor counts playing their game of snakes and ladders until they had amassed lordships over Austria, the Netherlands, Spain and large parts of Italy. Today we look at how they finally got hold of the last bits, Bohemia and Hungary.The story features a dutiful younger brother, the most cruel execution I have ever heard of, a foolish duke and an even more foolish king, the collapse of a kingdom, a love story and the reason for the incessant Habsburg inbreeding. We are coming closer to the end of our series on the Fall and Rise of the House of Habsburg. We have seen the reconsolidation of Austria, the acquisition of Burgundy, the inheritance of Spain and today, we will look at the last stages of the Italian wars. This conflict, kicked off by king Charles VIII in 1494 had given “rise to changes of dominions, subversion of kingdoms, desolation of countries, destruction of cities and the cruellest massacres, but also new fashions, new customs, new and bloody ways of waging warfare, and diseases which had been unknown to that time”. Many players of this game had exited stage left and it was now just France and the Habsburgs in various alliances with the remaining Italian powers, who fought for control. What sounds, places or feelings did you draw upon when gathering inspiration for this mix, and what listening environments could you imagine it being most enjoyed in? A. I recently returned from a trip to South America where we spent most days talking about music, and specifically the sounds that got us inspired to start DJing. Enjoying time away in nature while driving long winding roads to the beach, between snow tipped mountains, and sunrise bus ride through the vast desert gave me plenty of time to reflect. This year marks 10 years since I started, and this mix is a trip down memory lane where we revisit the archive of tracks and moods that stood out to me. So I guess you could say it came from a pretty sentimental place. I imagine it would be nice for a drive to the beach or while sat somewhere beautiful. Q. Are there any records in the mix that you were especially excited to share, and what is it about these songs that resonate with you so much? A. Heaps! But in particular the last track ‘Homepage' by Brittany is a special one that takes me straight to my favourite place - in the ocean. A lot of my sound (and music I consume) is influenced by proximity to a body of water: coming, going, and spending time by it. Q. We loved your Touch Of Sapphic EP from last year, it felt like potentially the beginnings of a new direction with your sound.. cheeky and club focussed but with a really groovy, breezy feel to it all. Can you tell us about any new projects in the works, and what sounds have you been drawn to explore further? A. It's been a balancing act to blend more club and late night tracks with the sounds that I'm more familiar with making. Lately, I've been really into ‘patient house' as Ricky Nord calls it, which can be characterised by taking a less predictable and more laidback approach to arrangement, while giving more time for each element in the track to breathe. I still love tracks that use a big snare roll to build energy, but I've been enjoying new ways to mix tracks in sets that shy away from the classic energy signifiers. You can expect another EP from me soon with a good bit of breezy groovy stuff, and perhaps a bit of patient house???

Jon Radford has been adding soul and rhythmic vibe to the Nashville music scene since 2005, when he first began visiting the city to pick up drum gigs. He would soon move to Nashville from his hometown of Clarksville, TN with his wife, acclaimed painter Kim Radford.   After transitioning to Nashville full-time, Radford began touring across the US and Europe with Charles Walker & The Dynamites and Drew Holcomb & The Neighbors. When not touring, Radford could be found fulfilling a vital tradition for Nashville's most talented, playing the lower Broadway honky-tonk bars on Sunday nights with The Don Kelly Band. In 2012, Radford helped found the critically acclaimed Luella and the Sun, a blues and gospel-tinged rock quartet. The band released a 10” single, Fly So Free, and toured for two years, performing at festivals such as Austin City Limits and Hangout Fest before disbanding. Also in 2012, Radford joined Justin Townes Earle's touring band, performing on The Late Show with David Letterman.    Radford's uniquely soulful, powerful drumming style is influenced by the iconic session players of 1960s and 1970s, including Kenny Buttrey, Hal Blaine, Jim Gordon, Steve Gadd, and Al Jackson Jr. Radford's extensive and ever-growing record collection is also a constant and evolving influence.   In recent years, Radford has been an active session musician around Nashville, recording with producers such as Jacquire King, Brendan Benson, Paul Ebersold, and Jim Abbiss. Radford is also a regular member of the Nashville-based instrumental group Steelism. Maximilian I died on January 12th, 1519. But his likeness is everywhere. None of his predecessors left behind as many depictions of their life, from being fed by his nurse as a toddler to the Totenbild, the picture of the emperor in death, stripped of all his paraphernalia, even his teeth broken out.If you search in google for the most reproduced image of a Holy Roman Emperor, two come up, the portrait of Maximilian that Albrecht Dürer produced in Augsburg in 1518, as shown on last weeks episode artwork and Titian's equestrian portrait of Charles V after the battle of Mühlberg, which in turn is a composition that goes back to several equestrian portraits of Maximilian I.Basically, Maximilian I is the most visually present Holy Roman emperor of them all. And that is not by chance. The last decade of emperor Maximilian's reign was overshadowed by all three challenges to the emerging Habsburg empire gaining strength. The Ottoman empire was piling on resources by taking over Syria, Lebanon and Egypt. A vigorous new king of France, Francois I was turning the tide in the incessant Italian wars into his favor. And finally the greatest of threats to the dynasty emerged as the Prince Electors were contemplating to raise that self-same Francois I to the imperial title.In this episode we will look at how the prematurely aged and exhausted emperor tried to shield his grandsons Charles and Ferdinand from the ton of bricks that was coming down on them. And we will look at his last days and legacy. Clocking in at 18 episodes, Maximilian did achieve one of his objectives in life, outpacing the great emperor Frederick Barbarossa.
