“Bella gerant alii, tu felix Austria nube" – ‘Let others wage war; thou, happy Austria, marry' is one of the few terms that almost anyone with a cursory interest in European history knows, only rivalled by the Voltaire quote thou shall not utter in my presence ever. It evokes the image of a handsome alpine boy full of charm and apple strudel wooing some princess into peacefully handing over the richest lands is Europe. And this narrative of peaceful transition to a benign dynasty is another one of the great propaganda successes of the house of Habsburg. The saying was attributed to Matthias Corvinus, the king of Hungary who had once occupied Vienna, then to the humanist Ulrich von Hutten, but first evidence of its use dates back to 1654, more than 150 years after the famous marriages that made an empire. From 1680 it was read out at Habsburg weddings to emphasise the peaceful nature of its rulers. It definitely did not originate in the days of Maximilian I when all these dynastic alliances were formed and bore fruit. Talking about gentle and peaceful transition was preposterous against the backdrop of a 15 -year long war over the succession to the grand Dukes of Burgundy, and the roller coaster ride that is today's topic, the way the Habsburgs acquired the crown of Spain. The music for the show is Flute Sonata in E-flat major, H.545 by Carl Phillip Emmanuel Bach (or some claim it as BWV 1031 Johann Sebastian Bach) performed and arranged by Michel Rondeau under Common Creative Licence 3.0.As always:Homepage with maps, photos, transcripts and blog: www.historyofthegermans.comIf you wish to support the show go to: Support • History of the Germans PodcastFor do it yourself merchandise go to: Merchandise • History of the Germans PodcastFacebook: @HOTGPod Threads: @history_of_the_germans_podcastBluesky: @hotgpod.bsky.socialInstagram: history_of_the_germansTwitter: @germanshistoryTo make it easier for you to share the podcast, I have created separate playlists for some of the seasons that are set up as individual podcasts. they have the exact same episodes as in the History of the Germans, but they may be a helpful device for those who want to concentrate on only one season. So far I have:The OttoniansSalian Emperors and Investiture ControversyFredrick Barbarossa and Early HohenstaufenFrederick II Stupor MundiSaxony and Eastward ExpansionThe Hanseatic LeagueThe Teutonic KnightsThe Holy Roman Empire 1250-1356The Reformation before the ReformationThe Empire in the 15th centuryThe Fall and Rise of the Habsburgs
Jim Lanzone is the CEO of Yahoo. It's basically impossible to sum up Yahoo's story over the last 25 years, but the short version is that once upon a time, Yahoo paid Google to run the search box on its website, and everything immediately went sideways. Jim calls it Yahoo's original sin. But after a long series of mergers, spinouts, and a hot, weird minute as part of Verizon Yahoo is once again an independent, privately held company — and it's growing. Is humanity entering a new phase of consciousness evolution? In this fascinating presentation, we explore the re-evolution of consciousness, the merging of the Christos and Sophia energies, and the emergence of new multidimensional awareness. Through channeling, sound frequencies, and intuitive insights, this talk dives into crystalline blueprints, echolocation of consciousness, and the mysterious Aurora time spiral said to connect humanity to higher harmonic realities. Jess is a metaphysical conduit devoted to exploring the many expressions of consciousness through deep self-study, research, and direct experience. Her work blends oracle-style channeling, intuitive divination, and energetic mapping practices she describes as clair-graphy, a process of reading energetic blueprints and frequency grids within the human field. Jess focuses on restoring angelic crystalline DNA, awakening intuitive channels, and helping individuals recognize synchronicity as a universal language guiding personal and collective evolution.
Fore! Or is it "Sixteen"? Either way, watch out for flying golf balls. In this episode, Bob (aka Average Boy) takes us to his youth group golf tournament. While Jesse keeps things "on par" with some silly puns, Bob shares how a day at the links—and several trips into the woods—taught him a huge lesson about pride. From catching armadillos to diving into ponds for extra golf balls (28 of them, to be exact!), Bob’s golfing strategy might be a little "below average," but his heart is in the right place. We also tackle a tough question from a listener about how to keep your cool and show self-control when siblings start pushing your buttons. Click here to see the new Average Boy book title and cover! This episode explores some controversial silliness over a bottle of wine that shows up in a classic fairy tale. We take a look at the history, and then casually address the wine Little Red Riding Hood may have actually hauled through the woods to her ailing grandma in rural 19th century Germany. We end with a crazy pairing ... all in the spirit of entertainment. What if Earth itself is awakening through a crystalline intelligence? In this fascinating presentation, we explore Gaia's living consciousness, the crystalline grid of the planet, and humanity's connection to the universe through the heart. Through personal experiences of Arcturian contact and multidimensional communication, this talk reveals how human consciousness, Earth's energy field, and cosmic forces are evolving together during this powerful period of planetary transformation. Karen Lithica is a multidimensional healer, author, and botanist who bridges science and spirituality. Born and raised in Australia with Maltese heritage, she holds a PhD in plant DNA evolution and systematics and has conducted extensive botanical research studying Earth's ecosystems and discovering new plant species. After a profound spiritual awakening in 2012, Karen embraced her role as a light channel and Arcturian contactee. She founded the Sanctuary of Light, a global community focused on ascension and light consciousness. Karen is also the author of Crystal Guardians of Gaia and shares teachings on crystalline planetary evolution, multidimensional awareness, and humanity's connection to Gaia.
If there was one group that consistently thwarted Maximilian's grand plans for world domination, it was the princes of the Holy Roman Empire. He had given in to their demands for Imperial Reform, had granted the Reichstag far reaching powers, had established the Reichskammergericht as a law court independent of imperial authority and had announced the much longed for ban on feuding. But did the princes, counts, knights and cities hold up their end of the bargain and paid him taxes to raise the armies needed to defend the borders of the empire – well you bet. They left him hanging before Livorno, they collected berries instead of fighting in the Swiss war, and – spoiler alert – they will not raise a little finger to help Ludovioco il Moro to regain his duchy of Milan, even though Milan had been an imperial fief since the days of Charlemagne and Otto the Great. No money, no soldiers, nothing. The music for the show is Flute Sonata in E-flat major, H.545 by Carl Phillip Emmanuel Bach (or some claim it as BWV 1031 Johann Sebastian Bach) performed and arranged by Michel Rondeau under Common Creative Licence 3.0.As always:Homepage with maps, photos, transcripts and blog: www.historyofthegermans.comIf you wish to support the show go to: Support • History of the Germans PodcastFacebook: @HOTGPod Threads: @history_of_the_germans_podcastBluesky: @hotgpod.bsky.socialInstagram: history_of_the_germansTwitter: @germanshistoryTo make it easier for you to share the podcast, I have created separate playlists for some of the seasons that are set up as individual podcasts. they have the exact same episodes as in the History of the Germans, but they may be a helpful device for those who want to concentrate on only one season. Why are the Swiss called the Swiss? After all, Schwyz in only of 26 cantons, and not one of the largest ones. How did the proud and prosperous citizens of Zurich or Berne, mighty city states in their own right, decide they wanted to be named after a mountainous region largely inhabited by peasants tending to their gorgeous brown cattle, the Braunvieh. They even called their national airline Swissair, until my former colleagues at McKinsey let the air out of that one.So, why Swiss? The answer goes back to today's topic, a war that the Swiss call the Schwabenkreig or Swabian War. This war played a massive role in Swiss historiography, and its main battles at the Caven and at Dornach was mentioned in the same breath as Morgarten and Sempach. It was seen as the moment when Switzerland de facto exited the Holy Roman Empire and began ploughing its own furrow in European history. Meanwhile in Germany, this war that we called the Schweizerkreig or Swiss War is largely forgotten amongst the hundreds of other military conflicts. It was also the first of many contests between the two formidable fighting forces of the Renaissance, the Swiss Reisläufer and the German Landsknechte. These soldiers of fortune have percolated the national consciousness on both sides, their fanciful dress depicted in art on both sides of the Rhine and still providing one of Rome's most instagrammable photo opportunities. That on top of the usual incompetence and skullduggery should be incentive enough to listen to this episode. My guest today is a lifelong martial artist whose journey reflects the full spectrum of what martial arts training really looks like, the challenges, the growth, and the long-term commitment required to stay on the path. Jim Ockington began training more than 35 years ago, navigating early setbacks, demanding black belt tests, and years of competition that helped shape both his skills and his perspective. Over time, he grew into a leader on and off the mat, running competition teams, leading sparring classes, and serving as a primary instructor for both adult and teen programs. His background spans multiple disciplines, including World Taekwondo, ITF Taekwondo, Hapkido, and Bill “Superfoot” Wallace's system. Along the way, he trained directly under, and often alongside, some of the most respected names in the martial arts world. That exposure to high-level instruction, cross-training, and large-scale tournaments helped shape a well-rounded, experience-driven approach to martial arts. Today, Jim continues to train and teach daily, sharing his knowledge with students ranging from lifelong practitioners to those discovering martial arts later in life, proving that training is not about age, but about mindset. A multiple-time Martial Arts Hall of Fame inductee, his story is one of persistence, adaptability, and staying connected to the art for a lifetime. Please welcome my guest today, Jim Ockington. In this powerful Portal to Ascension presentation, Arcturus Ra explores the relationship between human consciousness, quantum coherence, and modern technology, challenging common fears around artificial intelligence. Drawing from ancient knowledge, experiential insight, and quantum principles, he explains how intention, resonance, and awareness interact with electromagnetic systems, planetary grids, and digital networks. Europe's political landscape is shifting fundamentally. No longer are wars fought between kings and their vassals, and emperors against popes - it is all about the balance of power. and this balaance is firmly out of whack. The largest, richest and most populous part of Europe, the empire that still formally included Italy, the Low Countries, the Swiss Confederation, Bohemia and Burgundy, was also its politically weakest entity, whilst the kings of France leveraged their smaller but more coherent state into European dominance. The struggle between France and its neighbours with england looking on was to become the dominant political pattern of Western European politics for 250 or arguable 350 years.Maximilian has a Grand Plan that could have nipped these centuries of death and destruction in the bud. But he did not...Karl Marx once said that history repeates itself twice, first as tragedy and then as farce. he was wrong on many (not all) things. This one repeats not twice but ten, if not dozens of times, but first as farce and then as tragedy...Enjoy the ride..The music for the show is Flute Sonata in E-flat major, H.545 by Carl Phillip Emmanuel Bach (or some claim it as BWV 1031 Johann Sebastian Bach) performed and arranged by Michel Rondeau under Common Creative Licence 3.0.As always:Homepage with maps, photos, transcripts and blog: www.historyofthegermans.comIf you wish to support the show go to: Support • History of the Germans PodcastFacebook: @HOTGPod Threads: @history_of_the_germans_podcastBluesky: @hotgpod.bsky.socialInstagram: history_of_the_germansTwitter: @germanshistoryTo make it easier for you to share the podcast, I have created separate playlists for some of the seasons that are set up as individual podcasts. they have the exact same episodes as in the History of the Germans, but they may be a helpful device for those who want to concentrate on only one season. Nate had been a fixture on the Nashville scene for 14 years and recently landed the proverbial big gig. He found himself in Zach Top's drum chair when Zach was an opening act in thousand cap rooms, and the whole operation was very DIY. Not long after, Zach's popularity exploded make him an international arena and stadium headliner seemingly overnight, and he took Nate and the rest of his band with him. In this episode, Nate talks about: Feeling a buzz around Zach Top from the moment he joined the band The show that made them realize they were huge The learning curves that come with the big gig How his approach to songs happened to match perfectly with Zach's needs as a frontman The evolving pay situation Here's our Patreon Here's our Youtube Here's our Homepage

St. John of Avila (1499 - 1569) At the dawn of the Protestant Reformation, St. John of Avila stood in a long and noble tradition of preachers for reform within the Catholic Church. His down-to-earth, but pull-no-punches preaching style brought people back to the sacraments, and he often found that after he preached, he spent the rest of the day hearing confessions. Let's go through the cosmic LinkedIn profiles of archetypal and transcendent beings that continue to shape our individual and collective psyche. Kevin Cann'll join me for this special stream, and you know we'll cover some of his new works, including Platonic Surrealism. We'll have a relaxed discussion and cover the serious topics of archetypal possession and archonic invasion, as well as the mystery of Abraxas. You'll get solutions to unleash our inner Christ and find psychic freedom by undreaming Wetiko. But are the aliens coming? You'll find out, too, and they're part of your waking dream, too. You'll dig our talking about KPop Demon Hunters and Battlestar Galactica (they're both not fiction). The thumbnail is based on a conversation we had before the show. Prof Duncan Hardy is one of the leading experts in the history of the Holy Roman Empire and one of his main topics is the Imperial reform of 1495, making him the ideal guest for our show.In his first book, Associative Political Culture in the Holy Roman Empire he tries to define what the Holy Roman Empire was a question we will almost certainly spend quite some time discussing today. His forthcoming book, which he had so kindly sent me an advance copy, should be familiar to you all, since I do use it as a source for the show. It is titled Law, Society and Political Culture in Late Medieval and Reformation Germany and contains a large number of edited and translated primary sources illustrating German history circa 1350 to 1550.As a special treat, listeners to the Hstory of the Germans can order the book at Manchester University press with a 30% discount. Have you ever stared at your farm's website homepage and thought… what am I even supposed to put here? Your website is the source of truth for your brand. It's where people go to learn more, double-check you, and decide if they want to buy. And if your homepage is unclear or overwhelming, most people won't stick around. In today's episode, I'm breaking down a simple framework for what actually belongs on your farm's website homepage—so it's clear, strategic, and helps turn visitors into customers. We're talking about the specific messaging blocks every strong farm homepage is built from, and how to stack them in a way that creates clarity, builds trust, and guides people toward action. You'll learn my "pancake stack" framework, the foundational homepage sections I recommend for most farm businesses, plus optional add-ons you can pull from depending on your sales model (CSA, online store, shipping, farmers markets, meat, veggies, and more). If your homepage feels messy, confusing, or outdated, this episode will give you a much clearer path forward. Resources Mentioned In This Episode: What email provider do I use?
