And how the best at what they do are able to master self control, have unstoppable willpower and seem to achieve anything they want in life. Now is your time to join them by incorporating a key habit of successful people and build discipline. In this video, I will highlight why your obstacles to discipline may be holding you back and how you can overcome them to achieve your goals in life. KEY POINTSAre You Sabotaging Your Ability To Stay Disciplined? - What bad habits do you have which are holding you back from staying disciplined? Being aware of your habits is the first step to becoming more disciplined. Are You Afraid To Do What Makes You Uncomfortable? - Growth lies outside your comfort zone. The best way to stay disciplined is to make sure you're discarding your safety net and pushing yourself outside your comfort zone.Progress Beats Perfection - The name of the game is progress not perfection. Perfection is impossible to achieve, just get better little by little, everyday, that's your goal.Respect Your Need For Balance - Your willpower, your discipline, it's like a muscle. You can stress that muscle, but it needs time to rest and recover. Stay balanced by prioritizing sleep, nutrition and exercise, as well as your mental clarity. Get Some Sleep! - Ensure you are getting eight hours of sleep, or else you are unlikely to be able to stay disciplined. If you're tired and run down you're likely to give into temptation.Eat The Best, Leave The Rest! - Studies have shown that when you eat sugary, processed food that does not occur naturally within nature it leads us to reduced discipline.Nothing Will Workout Unless You Do! - Exercise is a fantastic way to stay balanced. If you exercise in the morning it gives you a 12 hour mood boost. When you're in a good mood, you're more likely to be able to maintain discipline. Show Summary: “We need sodium to help us adequately maintain our blood pressure. We need it to support our brain, our adrenals, and our digestion.”We need salt in our bodies. Studies from the American Journal of Medicine show that low salt intake causes more cardiovascular disease risk factors than extremely high intake. The adrenal, which produces cortisol, needs sodium to help our bodies adapt to stress. But we should know which type of salt to consume and not. Like other processed foods, salt can also be manufactured. Sadly, other manufacturers pull out the nutrients from it to make the cost cheaper, which you have to get rid of to avoid certain diseases. In this episode with Darryl Bosshardt, one of the founders of the Redmond Red Salt, you'll discover what natural whole salt is and its difference from the one you see in the market. In addition, you'll find out how the human body reacts to a salt substitute.Exceptional Highlight:Throw out the idea of looking for sea salt, and start looking for natural whole salt.Every single cell in the body requires sodium.Salt is a very inexpensive preservative, and it's even cheaper if it's manufactured because they've already pulled out the nutrients. So if you're eating processed foods, you're getting high amounts of processed salt, which is a bad combination..Show Highlights: Is salt really bad for us, and should we eliminate it from our diet?Darryl 5:00Salt's job in the body is to regulate intracellular and extracellular fluids. So when those fluids are out of balance, it does cause, or it can cause problems. So these doctors did a study on rats and fed them copious amounts of sodium, and sure enough, they had some problems. And that'd be true for everything.Does lack of salt affect your food digestion?Juanique 9:42If you're decreasing your salt intake, you don't have enough sustenance to create hydrochloric acid in the stomach to break down your food. Therefore, you're not absorbing your food and would have malabsorption. Consequently, you start to get sick. So we need this salt to get the chloride to pump it into our stomach to break down our food. What should we know about the world of iodized salt?Darryl 20:27Most people, especially women, are iodine deficient for several reasons, whether that's halogen toxicity, diet, or many different factors involved. Most people should be going out of their way to seek good sources of iodine, be that food or a good clean iodine supplement. But salt is not the way to get iodine.Important LinksRedmond Red SaltReal SaltThe Salt FixSalt Your Way to HealthIodine : Why You Need It, Why You Can't Live Without ItSalt: A World HistorySupport the show (https://www.mygutsyhealth.com/gutsy-family)

On Wednesday, February 24, 2021, host Judy Comeaux led a roundtable discussion aimed at answering the very real question many of us ask when confronted with the infidelity of priests and Catholic lay leaders: Why should I remain? Using Fr. Mike Schmitz's excellent episode from his own podcast with Ascension Presents as a starting point, "Why You Can't Put Your Faith in People," the Roundup participants explained the necessity, even in the face of real distress and hurt from scandal, that each of have to ground our Faith not on the example of others, but on the Truth of the Church's Tradition and Magisterium. We must remember that the grace communicated through the Sacraments are not dependent on the holiness of the minister. And we must put the onus on ourselves to offer the most upright example possible even as we are realistic about the examples given to us by others. In this we are heeding our Lord's command to concentrate more on the beam in our own eye than on the splinter in our neighbor's. Please subscribe, rate, and review the show wherever you get your podcasts. And remember to go out and love your neighbor.

There is a big difference between feeling positive about your body and the body positivity movement, but it can be a very nuanced topic to understand. While diet culture is part of a more extensive set of oppressive systems to people with marginalized identities, the body positivity movement has moved so far away from how it started. Social justice and body positivity are heavily intersected, and it takes some time to unpack just how deeply that runs in our society. Key Takeaways If You Want To Understand The Difference Between Body Positivity and the Body Positivity Movement, You Should: Educate yourself about the history of the body positivity movement Understand the systemic ways that people in marginalized bodies are oppressed Unfollow anyone who is co-opting the body positivity movement with disproportionate motivations The Difference Between Body Positivity and Systemic Oppression The body positivity movement has started to center around people who don’t represent the individuals that this movement was really created by and for. Although originally created for people in marginalized bodies, we have seen a change in the ‘face’ of body positivity shifting away from marginalized bodies and towards others that are co-opting the movement. While it is still totally possible and common for people in straighter size bodies to dislike their bodies and relationships with food, it is not the same as experiencing the kind of systemic discrimination and oppression that people in larger bodies experience every single day. What You Can Do To Stop the Co-Opting There is still judgment for people in larger bodies who embrace the body positivity movement in the same way that people in non-marginalized bodies do. By being clearer and discerning with the terms that we use on social media and in real life, we can stop the systematic oppression found in the body positivity movement and start including the people who might not look like you. With some learning, some listening, and some questioning, you can start to peel back the layers of the body positivity onion and understand the time and place of these hard things. How are you going to dig deeper into the differences between body positivity, fatphobia, and the systemic oppression of marginalized bodies? Share your thoughts with me in the comments on the episode page. In This Episode A brief history of the body positivity movement and why you shouldn’t co-opt it if you are in a straight size body (5:54) How social media has impacted the body positivity movement and plays into oppressive narratives (14:35) The difference between systemic oppression and discrimination because of the body that you are in (17:58) How movements aimed at people with marginalized bodies are being subsumed by people who they were not designed for (20:20) Suggestions to help you be more clear and discerning around your understanding of body positivity (24:27) Quotes “It is kind of important to bring up this idea of co-opting, and how it removes the emphasis away from the people or the concepts that it was really designed to support.” (7:52) “You start to see that predominantly thin, white, young, cisgender people who are being featured as the ‘faces’ of body positivity. And that is so different from the origins of the fat acceptance movement.” (15:46) “What I am trying to say in this episode is that yes, you may have negative feelings about your body. Even if your body is very thin, you may still have body dysmorphia, you could still have an eating disorder, you could still have disordered eating, you could still not like your body. But it’s still not the same as experiencing the kind of systemic discrimination and oppression that people in larger bodies experience every single day.” (19:10) “There is a difference between feeling bad about your body and experiencing systemic discrimination.” (22:23) “I don’t want you to just listen to me; I want you to really go seek out and follow and listen to people who are in larger bodies as a start.” (27:44) Featured on the Show Join the Tune In Membership Here Fearing The Black Body by Sabrina Strings Fat Is a Feminist Issue by Susie Orbach Join the Listen To Your Body Newsletter Steph Gaudreau Website Check out the full show notes here! "After 40 years of advertising, the ads that lawyers are making still suck." - Morris Bart Is legal advertising about best practices, or does Morris Bart have a sixth sense? Do you really need to spend millions to get leads from TV ads? How did Morris Bart write the genius “One Call, That's All” slogan? What one aspect of his firm will Morris Bart never let go of? Morris Bart: Legal Marketing Pioneer Morris Bart was the first attorney to advertise in the state of Louisiana, and one of the first to do so in the entire country. The second that the Bates decision was passed, he was on the train and he's never looked back! Now a New Orleans local celebrity, Morris pioneered the use of TV ads and billboards, and he rode the wave from a single office in 1980 to 17 locations today. So where did Morris Bart get his sixth sense for advertising? This week, we discuss the commitment, perseverance, and long game that helped Morris Bart rise to the top and dominate his market. The Power of the Slogan (and Why You Can't Just Steal Someone Else's) Just about everyone in the country has heard attorneys use the "One Call, That's All" slogan, but did you know Morris Bart created it? Morris shares the power and simplicity of crafting the perfect slogan — and how to make it stick. Plus, we discuss how true differentiation can only be achieved by identity-centric branding, and why, according to Morris Bart, the majority of lawyers' ads still suck. The Digital Territory: Why Morris Bart Still Gets His Hands Dirty Even after years of success, Morris Bart keeps rising to new heights, so why doesn't he ride off into the sunset? The answer is simple: he loves to create. Morris views digital marketing as a vast uncontrollable territory full of intellectual and creative challenges. We discuss the new advertising landscape, which social media platforms he prefers, and why he's hedging his bets on mastering Google. Key takeaways: You've got to spend money to make money, at least when it comes to TV ads. Morris Bart believes it is impossible to achieve a high level of success unless you are a top spender in your market. Managing people is one of the biggest challenges. Morris learned the hard way that to avoid disappointment in hiring, you need to develop a thick skin and become an expert in HR and spotting potential. Everyone can jump on the Morris Bart wagon, as long as he's still driving. The best leaders learn to encourage collaboration and relinquish some of their control (but still keep their finger on the kill switch). Building team accountability is a great way to improve performance in a team. Team members that take accountability are more likely to put in extra effort, care and attention to making sure the work is done right. Without accountability, leaders often feel like they are going it alone. If you are the only one who really cares about the quality of the work in your team, it can feel like you're running around trying to fix everything by yourself. That's why we want to be doing things that increase accountability, instead of damage it. Sometimes as leaders, we do things that damage accountability in our teams, even without meaning to. He was on humira and he keeps having allergic reactions to that family of drugs. Any biohacks you guys know of that specifically help? I know stress triggers it... I was thinking of getting him a Biomat mini or belt... what else? Giving a blanket answer to this question is tough because it ignores everyone's bio-individuality. That said, a good guideline to follow would be, as a first step: give the problem some crutches to lean on. This means giving the inflammatory response a break for a moment so that your gut can soothe itself — at least for long enough to absorb the nutrients you're going to need to begin healing. Eliminating the most obvious food sensitivities like nuts, eggs, dairy, wheat, processed foods, nightshades, etc. Once that's dialed in, go a level up and consider removing high-histamine foods that could be perpetuating the inflammatory cycle. And then, once a little more stable, support detoxification by getting in a light daily sweat, and eating steamed foods that assist the liver, like dandelion, artichoke, beets, cruciferous vegetables, garlic, and gluten-free oats. And all the while, prioritize meditation, sunlight, and lymphatic drainage. A light rebounding session on a Bellicon, or even just doing some jumping jacks on some carpeting can be a big help. To dive deep into all matters colitis, and IBD, someone who'd been a well-kept secret here in LA for several years, but is now out of LA, and entering the online world in a bigger way, is a personal friend of mine, Jordan Kravitz. Jordan was diagnosed with Crohn's Disease in 2015, and after getting handed the pamphlets about all the drugs he'd need from the head of the IBD clinic here at Cedars-Sinai Hospital, Jordan laughed at him and told him to keep his drugs. He then went on an absolutely crazy journey to reverse Crohn's Disease, and today enjoys excellent digestive health, thanks to his unique approach to healing inflammatory gut issues of all kinds. Lipofuscin has three constituents: Oestrogen + Iron + PUFAs = LipofuscinIn In other words, the polyunsaturated fats (canola oil, soy oil, corn oil, safflower oil, sunflower oil, fish oil, flax oil etc) we consume in our food (and rub into our skin in the form of moisturisers), the iron we eat from red meat and green vegetables, and the oestrogen our bodies produce naturally combine to form this brown, fatty waste product that clogs up our cells and, as we age, forms liver spots. Where does sunlight fit into this picture? Dr Peat explains that when we’re exposed to UV light, it can cause damage to unsaturated fatty acid molecules in our skin, producing free radicals. Manage your iron intake. This is one of the most important pieces of the age spots puzzle. One way of managing your iron levels is to give blood regularly; there’s evidence that this can even reduce your risk of heart attack and strokes. Donating blood can be especially helpful for men and post-menopausal women, because they do not lose any blood through menstruation. Anybody have any tips? I know it could be a lot of things but I'm open to suggestions so I can pinpoint what's going on. I’ve heard this probably 100 times over the years Like most experimental, and extreme diets, they often work for a period of time, then the body falls out of balance. There has never, ever been a 100% vegan human civilization in recorded history, which is why i call it experimental We don't yet know if it's safe. it would take 2-3 generations of 100% vegan people to breed 100% vegan kids, who then breed with 100% vegan people a few times over to see if its viable In my experience, being vegetarian or vegan is a form of fasting, or cleansing which can be amazing in the short term I prefer a balanced diet and to listen to my body and what it wants, since it is its own living organism, with its own innate intelligence If you do decide to phase out of this diet, try starting with bone broth (no additional animals die to make bone broth) or pastured eggs or wild caught, sustainably sourced fish. or even just oysters. To me, any diet that is deficient in critical nutrients and thus requires that you take supplements to fill the gap, is likely not a natural human diet because that would ot require supplements like b vitamins, vitamin a etc. Study the work of Dr. Weston Price for more info on the natural human diet and nutrient deficiencies Check out next tuesday’s episode: Why You Can't Beat Meat: The Ultimate Carnivore Diet Guide W/ Dr. Paul Saladino Episode 245: Wild Fed: How To Become A Modern Day Hunter-Gatherer w/ Daniel Vitalis *Vegan Trigger Warning Episode 94: Why I'm Not a Vegan - Daniel Vitalis All that said, to me, what trumps diet is avoiding non-native EMF and blue light. circadian biology wins over nutrient biology in my book. get into sync with nature, as nature is where creation’s wisdom lies 02:10:00 — Richard asks: Anyone have personal experience with improving eyesight naturally??? 5 Counterintuitive Mistakes Preventing You From Closing Revenue There are times salespeople don't make the best decisions that lead to closing deals. These mistakes can cause a loss in revenue. Let's take a look at the 5 counter intuitive mistakes preventing you from closing revenue. Devin Reed is a content strategy manager at Gong. He handles all the content marketing strategy courses and is responsible for presentations. He also goes to roadshows, such as Sales Live Miami. At this roadshow, Devin talked about 5 Counterintuitive Mistakes Preventing You From Closing Revenue. It's about the five things salespeople think are good practices, and are trained to believe are good habits when in fact, they're the opposite. These five mistakes hurt their deals and sales conversations. What Devin is sharing is backed up by data. Devin works for a company that has millions of sales conversations. They've analyzed these conversations to see patterns that help them get an idea of the things salespeople talk about the most. Here are the 5 counterintuitive mistakes preventing you from closing revenue. Using the ROI to seal the deal Focusing on quantity when it comes to discovery questions Answering objections quickly and thoroughly Using large enterprise clients Using cold call opening line Don't use ROI to seal the deal People make the mistake of using the ROI to close. Finding a way to bring ROI into the conversation is one of the basic strategies taught to beginning sales reps. This strategy is proving to be counterintuitive. ROI isn't bad in itself, but it becomes an ineffective tool when it is used for persuasion. Presenting your ROI to the client doesn't work because the information doesn't go to the right part of their brain. The human brain has two parts - the emotional and rational. More often than not, the right part processes information later than the emotional part. If you want to get the attention of your prospects, you need to tap into the emotional side of their brains first. You do this by giving them a before and after story. “Hey, I was in a podcast and not to brag or anything but that podcast did so well. They were doing this and that. I came on and I did this thing and two weeks later, they saw an X increase in their ROI.” This is an example of having a “before and after”, then diving into the ROI. When you are able to provide the identifiers with the before and after stories, the emotional pull comes in. Make it a goal to tap into their curiosity instead of just desperately presenting the numbers. A good salesperson always starts with emotion and understands people need to feel before they will give you their ear and show interest. After you've piqued their interest, then you can get to the boss to present the ROI. You show them what you can do for them is not only a great idea but also makes fiscal sense. Another reason why presenting the ROI often doesn't work is because it's naively done. Junior sales reps usually speak to CFOs who have years of experience. Their newness in the industry and lack of confidence make their calculations look phony. CFOs don't find the numbers trustworthy. Focusing on quantity when it comes to discovery questions Most salespeople have a discovery playbook with 15 to 30 questions. New sales reps believe it's necessary to ask them all because they have the mindset the more questions mean more information and eventually, the more chances of closing the deal. While asking questions isn't a bad thing per se, it can give buyers discovery fatigue. It feels more like an interrogation than a valuable business conversation. Based on the data, 11 - 14 targeted questions is the sweet spot for the number of questions a salesperson should ask. The article by Chris Orlob entitled Why You Can't Sell to C-suite Executives shares how salespeople only have four questions to ask C-suite executives. Tips when asking targeted questions: Use open-ended questions Using open-ended questions allows you to get more information. Ask one question that prompts a stream of answers. Get someone to think instead of reciting information Ask questions that will make them think about their answer. For example, “How is that tech stack preventing you from closing revenue?” This question causes them to take a moment before giving an answer. Ask connected questions Don't just throw out random questions. Ask them in a way that paints a bigger picture. Answering objections quickly and thoroughly Answering quickly shows how ready salespeople are to handle objections but the downside to that is the risk of actually answering the wrong objections. Instead , pause and wait. The benefits go both ways. For the salesperson, pausing creates room to time to think and for the prospect, the pause makes them feel heard. By the middle of the discussion, the prospect has already decided if they want to actually meet with the salesperson. It's the salesperson's responsibility to make sure the conversation is good throughout the meeting so prospects see the value and have a good time. The prospect enjoying the conversation is the most important goal. Using the enterprise logo when selling Data shows that salespeople using social proof has actually a lesser success rate. Salespeople may think dropping big company names they've worked with is compelling information but prospects don't share the same perspective. Instead of building trust with the prospect, what it does is alienate them. The right approach is to use tribal identifiers. This means building a tribe based on shared characteristics. The best salespeople will have three to six tribal identifiers to make the connection more appealing and compelling. For small startup businesses with fewer clients, salespeople can create a hyper-specific profile. This would mean not focusing on the same geography, for example, but instead , targeting companies with the same struggles and goals. Salespeople need to show their clients they are more than just someone on LinkedIn. They need to invest time upfront if they want to be heard. #SalesFacts Cold call opening line Many believe if you want to catch your prospect's attention, give them an opportunity to first say no. The assumption is that using an opening line that allows them an opportunity to say no gives the prospect the power they want to feel in the conversation. Philosophically, you want them to feel comfortable in letting their guard down. This strategy doesn't work. Data says there's a 6.6X increase when, instead of trying to get them to say no, you ask instead, “How have you been doing?” The potential client answers in the same vein and it causes a pattern interrupt. Your opening line isn't something that the receiver is expecting. An opening question like, “Hey, this is Devin. Did I catch you at a good time?” is a telltale sign that it's a cold call and immediately, guards go up. From that point on, it's an uphill battle. Always remember the before and after story because that's how trust is built. People may not remember you but they will remember your story. You don't have to be a great salesperson to share a story, you just have to share stories of value. “5 Counterintuitive Mistakes Preventing You From Closing Revenue” episode resources Catch Devin's podcast, Reveal the Revenue Intelligence, where they interview industry leaders who understand how they use their revenue intelligence to win the market. In today’s episode, we cover two new updates in the digital marketing world.Google’s Zero Click SearchesThis Forbes article, Why You Can’t Neglect Your Google Presence Anymore, talks about how so many of us never leave the Search Engine Results Page: “In the first quarter of 2019, nearly 49% of all U.S. Google searches ended without a click. I'm Andrew and I'm Scott. This production has meant to provide meaningful support to you to find great careers faster whether you're working or not today on job seekers radio. We're talking about the twelve things not to put on your resume. Resumes are great. They're necessary. We we know we need to use them but I need to keep up with the times. we don't use resumes quite the same way we did ten twenty thirty years ago so it's important that we make sure that we are aware of what is currently not just acceptable but preferred so we wanna talk about a few things that maybe in the past some people have enjoyed using or doing to probably shouldn't at this point and resumes. If you look at the history I think they've only been around since the nineteen sixties. It's relatively new phenomenon in the world of work in the world of human existence right well of course mistake what I know there's lots of change change in that time and there's this new thing called the Internet and applicant tracking software and all these new players are on the scene that are insulating us from the ability to find work often. The things that we create to make things is easier also make things more complicated so we want to give some ideas on some things that maybe we've done in the past that we don't want to do moving forward because we want to make sure that your resumes are the ones that get to the top of the list. We want you in the short pile not the round file exactly and the first thing the number one thing in my estimation and I came up with this list so Scott will just take some credit for I added a little a little bit. Okay is too much information. I can't tell you how many resumes I've seen that are eight nine ten pages long and if you're doing something outside of the sciences that's probably overkill it is over even in the sciences depends on that whole thing right who's even going to understand it. Well and I'm one that my coworkers will tell me all day long how wordy I am. I know that to help with that. I usually have someone else. Look look at my resume to help me edit it down because if I'm repeating things that I don't really realize because I'm trying to get the story just right. Having a second set of is especially when you have a friend or colleague who look at that from your the opposite point of view somebody who only thinks or speaks bullet points is probably going to help you and it had down to the the the information you actually need. You may not be the type this really wordy in that case. He's stretching the information to fit a pager to might be a challenge but this is for those people that are extra wordy or feel like me. They're trying to overwhelm the audience. I've got to make sure I get every little detail exactly because it's important that everybody knows everything that I can do. No it isn't yeah the resume you look. It's a French word and you know French did idea okay resume means summary. It's a summary of your experience is not a catalog of everything when you've ever done right and that actually ties into another point we'll be making later about how much time we put on it. The corollary to this that I've seen a lot is people say oh I'm going to fit this on one page in and they try to shoehorn to page resume onto one page and they do that by havin...

Do you have candida skin rashes? Or rashes that you believe are triggered and flared by candida? It's certainly possible! Candida is one of the big gut factors that can shift the balance of your gut (and ultimately your skin) towards dysbiosis. If you recall in previous episodes of the podcast, we've discussed how your gut microbiome balance essentially can set the tone for your skin's bug community. Whether you suspect you've got candida or know for sure that you do, today's episode is the first of a series exploring Candida as a skin rash root cause. It can impact pretty much any skin condition including eczema (atopic dermatitis), psoriasis, rosacea, seborrheic dermatitis, lichen sclerosus, tinea versicolor and more! In this episode: Why you might be wrong about having candida even though you have a lot of symptoms Why dandruff is not a scalp problem — it's a gut problem Diet suggestions to make if you have candida How to manage your expectations on your healing journey QUOTES: “The best test for candida is a urine test that looks for the organic acid D-Arabinitol. The spit test you've probably seen online is way too subjective and has no science behind it.” “I hear from a lot of clients and readers who have been traumatized trying candida cleanses on their own. They found a DIY kit online that only ended up making their skin rashes worse! Nothing makes an improvement after the flare-up of their symptoms. They feel such a sense of defeat because they blame themselves for making everything worse.” FULL TRANSCRIPT Welcome back to the Healthy Skin Show! In today's episode, I'm talking all about Candida! This is a hot topic because so many people think that candida is one of their root causes just from reading a list of symptoms online. And I totally get it because those lists include a number of symptoms that a lot of people have who have chronic health issues. Before you jump to the conclusion that Candida IS an issue for you (or if you already believe it is), know this… You can have the majority of the symptoms on those lists and NOT have Candida. You can have Candida, but never had a vaginal yeast infection that you can recall. Or you could be one of those people who end up with a mixed bag of bacteria AND Candida (or even parasites) causing the problem. And in this case, just targeting Candida might not improve your symptoms (or will do so only marginally) because it was only one piece of the puzzle. Fast Facts About Candida Overgrowth (To Frame Our Conversation) Here are 8 fast facts that you should know about candida — Candida overgrowth does not respond best to diet alone. The best test for candida is a urine test that looks for the organic acid D-Arabinitol. The spit test you've probably seen online is way too subjective and has no science behind it. Candida is a commensal gut organism so it does normally live in your gut. Keep in mind that it is an opportunistic “bug” so when conditions are right, it will overgrow (like when you take antibiotics). The issue with candida is that overgrowth begins in the gut. When we start to manifest outward signs of candida (like various fungal infections… even on your skin, feet or nails), it's a clue of fungal gut dysbiosis meaning that to really stop the outward expression, you have to address it in your gut. From clinical experience, anti-candida diets can help manage symptoms, but they are difficult to follow and not the most efficient way forward. Candida cleanses can actually cause your skin symptoms to get much worse… so be careful doing one on your own A few big red flags for candida overgrowth in your gut include: multiple and extended rounds of antibiotics at any point in your life, steroid use (like hydrocortisone and Triamcinolone), birth control pill use, excessive alcohol consumption, as well as a long history of the Standard American Diet loaded with processed and refined carbohydrates and sugar. You can have just about every Candida symptom that you read about online, but not have it as your primary issue Why You Can't Trust A Candida Symptom List I've worked with so many clients who have Candida as their primary concern. And I've also worked with people who believe that they do from reading those symptom lists only to discover that they actually had something else. Those lists are NOT full-proof. That's why I'm often hesitant to assume someone has candida unless they've got really clear red flags, have done definitive testing, or have been diagnosed with Candida by their doctor. Sometimes you just want an answer… and everyone typically points to Candida as a culprit. This can lead down the path of taking lots of anti-candida herbs that don't make you feel any better. And that's why I like to have more information in front of me than just a checklist (or that pointless spit test you've probably read about online… which has zero science to back it up and is frankly open to lots of interpretation). In no way am I trying to minimize the symptoms and strain that Candida places on your body. The struggle is very real! But the truth is… guessing isn't efficient. It's not always effective either (think of it more like throwing a dart in the dark hoping to hit the target). Problems With Alternative Candida Skin Rash Remedies As a point of caution, I hear from a pretty substantial number of clients and readers who have been rather traumatized by trying candida cleanses on their own. They found a DIY kit online that only ended up making their Candida Skin Rashes worse! Nothing they've tried has made an improvement after the flare-up of their symptoms. And they feel such a sense of defeat because they blame themselves for making everything worse. Yes, anti-fungal herbs can work on candida… but keep in mind that they are powerful agents. Just because something is natural doesn't mean that there can't be side effects. We have to have respect for herbs and botanical agents just as much as we wish doctors would be more cautious and judicious with antibiotic use. Plus, eliminating Candida to get rid of candida skin rashes means that you have to balance what's going on in your gut with ensuring healthy bowel elimination. All while supporting your liver detoxification system (typically Phase II Detox) to handle the added burden. All so that you don't experience those dreaded flu-like symptoms along with a flare-up of skin symptoms that are often described as “die off” or a “herxheimer reaction”. I cannot stress how important it is to have healthy elimination — meaning that you poop 1 to 3 times each day. And your stools are well-formed without any struggle to go. It also means that you do not “detox” and end up with diarrhea. That's equally irritating to your gut and costs you nutrients. Plus it's disruptive for the good gut bugs living in your microbiome. So you've got to manage the gut clean-up (as I call it) with elimination and liver detox. And then once your symptoms subside, it's imperative to re-establish a healthy gut bug community to help manage candida moving forward. What Candida Diet Changes Should I Make? If you've had candida for a long time and the symptoms are quite severe (as has been in the case in several of my seborrheic dermatitis clients), you may have to remove all dietary yeast. This includes fermented beverages like kombucha and alcohol for quite some time (at least 6 months if not more). Also — soy sauce, coconut aminos, vinegars, sauerkraut, kimchi and hard cheeses. If you're wondering my thoughts on the anti-candida diet — and why not just do that? I've not found the diet alone when used with clients in my clinical practice to drive results well enough to recommend it as your sole course of action. Plus, the symptoms tend to return once the eliminated foods are reintroduced. It's not to say that the diet doesn't work, but it's really just a band-aid. You're managing symptoms at that point. The environment of the gut has become unfriendly to healthy gut flora as a result of the imbalance (also called dysbiosis). I wish the mantra of “feed the good bugs and starve the bad” was nearly as effective, but you have to remember that most people in our community have been dealing with health issues for a long time. Typically there are a number of challenges present that perpetuate the state of dysbiosis. And that's why food, or in this case, diet, just isn't enough. As for the rashes on your skin… Obviously, living with candida rashes (and candida itself) is incredibly frustrating and embarrassing. Clients have found that topical probiotic application method that I've discussed on the blog is helpful too in rebalancing the skin's microbiome. I will link to the post on how to do that in the show notes! Managing Your Expectations On Your Candida Skin Rash Journey And one piece to this that people don't like to hear is… chronic candida takes time to address. It's not something that you can be done in a week. My clients with seborrheic dermatitis (dandruff) often take 5 to 7 months to see a resolution. They've been living with it so long (not realizing that the scalp problem was actually a gut problem). As a result, it can take a few rounds of shifting the anti-candida gut protocol (and sometimes having to deal with other microbes as well) to get things to stick. I say this because I know how much you just want things gone, but to truly resolve the underlying issue takes time. Maybe you'll get lucky and the process is faster for you. I've found that it's best to set your expectations reasonably rather than fixate on a quick win. There's a lot more to the candida skin rash puzzle and all of the connections that it has to eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, seborrheic dermatitis, and tinea versicolor. We'll cover more about this in an upcoming article for you so stay tuned! As always, I deeply appreciate you tuning in and am happy to answer any questions that you might have about this episode. Why is it so easy for us to put off or neglect the things we know are good for us? Today, I’m talking about getting enough sleep. It’s no surprise that lack of sleep is a widespread problem, but our cognitive performance is suffering...and all so we can stay awake to binge-watch The Handmaid’s Tale on Hulu. It probably doesn’t surprise you to learn that 20% of all Americans have been diagnosed with a sleep disorder. And in 2016, our sleep deprivation problems were declared a public health epidemic. Getting adequate sleep is becoming more and more challenging, due in part to our addiction to blue-light technology — phones, tablets and laptops — but also because of our refusal to power down and make sleep a priority. Arianna Huffington penned an amazing article that I reference in today’s episode called “Sleeping My Way to the Top.” In it, she challenges us to think of sleep as a fixed point in our day. “And everything else should be adjusted as needed so we don't miss it.” In this episode, you’ll hear about the worst-case scenarios of sleep deprivation (there’s a reason it’s classified as torture by this psychologist). I also share a little about my journey to realizing that sleep is simply not something I can skimp on any longer. When I was first starting Priority VA, I told myself that getting 4.5 hours of sleep per night was enough. It wasn’t. This lack of self care had damaging effects on my health, but also my work performance. Today, I discuss the ways I have made sleep a priority again. I share eight tips for getting better sleep. Some of these tips are things I have personally tried and invested in, others are from the National Sleep Foundation. While you certainly don’t have to invest in everything I recommend, I can personally attest to the effectiveness of the Brain.Fm app, the Chili Pad (through testimonies of my friends), the Mindfold sleeping mask, and the Oura Ring. I really hope you’ll join me in trying to establish a sleep ritual or routine. Remember, it’s OK if you don’t nail it right away. Think of this as a journey, or a practice, towards better sleep. The internet runs on advertising, which means that editors and writers are often tasked with getting the most possible eyeballs on their story. A few weeks ago, we had Joe Schriefer on the podcast in a special “Reports from the Field” episode. Joe said something that changed my life, and I’ve been thinking about ever since. As you may remember, Joe heads up Agora Financial, and he was one of the key players in growing it from $25 million a year to $250 million a year. The show as about how to scale up a business dramatically the way Joe has. What Joe said that kept ringing in my mind was: To grow a business big, think like the business is small. In other words, don’t get grandiose. Just do the normal things you do, but do them increasingly better. Don’t get private jets and a yacht. You would think a quarter-billion-dollar business should have a private plane, right. But that’s not how they do things. And that’s important. So it got me to thinking. There are so many people urging others to “think big.” And so many people who have these wild-ass plans that almost always disintegrate into dust. Why is that? What are those people misinformed about? And what can we all do differently so we can think bigger and actually profit long-term from our thinking and our actions? Probably the first thing is to listen to this message: Copy is powerful. You’re responsible for how you use what you hear on this podcast. Most of the time, common sense is all you need. But if you make extreme claims… and/or if you’re writing copy for offers in highly regulated industries like health, finance, and business opportunity… you may want to get a legal review after you write and before you start using your copy. My larger clients do this all the time. 1. What “Thinking Bigger” Means In copywriting and entrepreneurship, it means expanding your vision – the scope of what’s possible. - most common example: increasing your revenue/income - other examples - increasing the number of clients at the same time - increasing the number of different products you sell 2. Why It’s Important Business only moves in one of two directions. Up – it gets larger, or down – it gets smaller. If you try to stay the same size, it’s really a series of episodes of getting larger, then smaller, then larger, then smaller. What a waste of time and energy. If you keep getting smaller, you eventually go out of business. So the only logical way to go is to get larger. To grow. And you need to think bigger to do that. But you need to think in the right way. 3. The Mistake Most People Make - Think of a road trip. You have a map, you have a destination, you think that’s enough. - The thing most people overlook, and this is the big mistake, is they don’t prepare for - what to do when you get a flat tire - how to deal with a road that’s washed out - what happens when you get lost - That is – they don’t know how to solve all the nitty-gritty problems and unexpected events that occur along the way - So, they end up doing what they call “failing,” and give up - There’s a way to avoid this common mistake, and that’s what we’ll talk about today. 4. The True Path - Foundation - You need to get good at the basics - If you’re a copywriter, there are a few skills you need to have under your belt before you venture into the “big time.” Like.. - Research - Coming up with creative hooks - Writing in a persuasive way - Negotiating and maintaining relationships with clients - Meeting deadlines - If you’re a business owner, there’s also a set of core skills you need to have at a certain level of proficiency - Don’t expect you will pick these up “later” after you start to “think bigger.” You need to have them in your toolkit wherever you are now, before you start to go for big, massive goals - You may have heard different. I’ve never seen it end well when someone’s reach exceeds their grasp. Like the old saying goes, you need to prepare, to win. - Why You Can’t Think Bigger Until You Can Sweat The Small Stuff - Large is just a multiplication of small - As hard as it is for most people to come up with good ideas, coming up with ideas is the easy part. - Many people who are good at ideas think implementing is the hard part. - But implementing is easy compared to solving problems that occur, especially problems you weren’t expecting. - Solving problems when the heat is on is really the primo skill - And the only way you’re going to do that confidently and competently in a big way is by getting repetitive practice doing it in a small way. - What I’ve Observed In Big Thinkers I Know Personally - They’re obsessed with details – the right details - They draw on their own experiences and advice they’ve gotten from others who have at least as much experience as they have. Not too much on theory or other kinds of abstract ideas - They’re great problem-solvers. Very creative in that way even if they’re not like your typical creative personality. - They’re decisive. And once they make a decision, they take action. - They’re not huge braggarts or overly humble. More like, matter-of-fact, but just in the larger picture that they see. - My Own Path - I started very “big” – as the news editor of a national magazine in New York, and, I was told, the ambassador for McGraw Hill to Asia, as San Francisco Bureau Chief - It was all a bunch of bullshit. Of course, I didn’t know that at the time. - Because: I knew how to report and write articles, and edit articles. I was really good at those things. But… I really didn’t know how to solve problems, manage teams, motivate individuals, or bring in revenue. All of which you really need to do to grow a business, even if the teams and individuals are outsourced contractors and organizations. - I started over when I was 40. I built skills from the ground up and started very small. I had to. I was broke and I didn’t know what I was doing. - These days, I focus on tiny little details my former self would have scoffed at. Not all the time. But I’ve learned to identify and focus on what’s important, and when it comes to solving a problem at the granular level, I’m right there. - To give one example: Often when I do a critique, I’ll find four or five crucial things that can keep a client out of trouble and lead to a huge increase in the conversion from the copy. Back in my early 20's I used to do an hour cardio a day and then go home and nibble on HALF A BOX of cereal after my carb-fest dinner. In complete transparency I'd ALSO do an hour weights a day and walk to and from the gym. In perhaps too much transparency (!) if I was going through a break up ... People often believe that just because certain nutrients are healthy, that the more we take the healthier we will be. But this is not necessarily the case. In fact, taking too many supplements, or the wrong combinations or in the wrong timing, can work against your health efforts. For all the money you are spending and the effort you are putting into trying to be healthier, you can actually be making yourself sicker. Taking supplements safely and effectively is a highly misunderstood nutritional art and science. For example, there are acidic vs. alkaline supplements. How you take them, even the timing of when you take them with food, matters. There are also “pro-oxidative” and “anti-oxidative” nutraceuticals. A balance between the two may make a huge difference in your healing journey and efforts to become well or stay well. On this show Drs. Brownstein and Berkson share their combined 70 years of clinical experience with using supplements in functional medicine practice. This is a power packed show with empowering knowledge that many patients and doctors alike are not educated about. David Brownstein, M.D. is a board-certified family physician who combines conventional and alternative therapies. He is the Medical Director for the Center for Holistic Medicine in West Bloomfield, MI. He is a graduate of the University of Michigan (and so is Berkson) and Wayne State University School of Medicine. Dr. Brownstein is a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians and a serves on the board for the International College of International Medicine. Dr. Brownstein has lectured internationally about his success using natural therapies. He has also authored fourteen books: Iodine: Why You Need It, Why You Can’t Live Without It, 5th Edition; Vitamin B12 for Health; Drugs That Don’t Work and Natural Therapies That Do, 2nd Edition; The Miracle of Natural Hormones, 3rd Edition; Overcoming Thyroid Disorders, 3rd Edition; Overcoming Arthritis; Salt Your Way to Health, 2nd Edition; The Guide To Healthy Eating, 2nd Edition; The Guide to a Gluten-Free Diet, 2nd Edition; The Guide to a Dairy-Free Diet; The Soy Deception; The Skinny on Fats; The Statin Disaster; and Ozone: The Miracle Therapy.

Interesting week, with people who are actually spamming to make money. This virtual spamming has gone worst with making you believe that a family member is in actual danger, just to ask you for ransom money. Because of My Podcast I'm on the Cover of a Comic Book Jeremy Dennis explains how he was able to commission a custom comic book cover thanks to his supporters. New Edison Research on Podcasting Edison Research did a telephone survey of 2000 people ages 12 and older. Here are some of the results related to podcasting: 81% of the respondents own a smartphone (up from 76%). It's actually gone up 22% in two years. 50% of people have a Netflix account (more on that later) 60% of people (168 million) are familiar with podcasting (up from 55% last year) 40% have ever listened to a podcast (up from 35% last year). 10 Years ago is was 13% 24% listen to a podcast in the last month (up from 21%) 15% listen weekly (up from 13%) The people who listened weekly average five episodes per week. Their data shows 65% is mobile (Libsyn says this is closer to 80%) 40% listen to the whole thing. 45% listen to most of it. 10% listen to less than half. 5% listen to just the beginning. 77% Click on and listen immediately (stream). 41% download and listen later. 2&% subscribe and listen later People that subscribe, are subscribed to an average of six podcasts. Each year since 2004 these numbers have gone up every single year. Get the slides and see the presentation at http://www.edisonresearch.com/infinite-dial-2017/ One More Thing.. 50% of people have a Netflix account, and 43% of them use it on a weekly basis 60% of people are familiar with a podcast. 40% have listened to one, but 24% listen monthly, and 15% listen weekly. Why? In my opinion, you have a better chance at finding quality programming in Netflix than you do in iTunes. I'm going to do some random experiments on this going forward. Pinecast is a new "Free" media hosting service. It is founded by Matt Basta who is an engineer for Uber. It was founded in August of 2015 (per his LinkedIn profile). Their free hosting has the following features: Demo accounts are limited to three podcasts per account. The podcast import tool is not available for demo accounts. An unlimited number of episodes may be added, but only the most recent ten episodes will be available to view in the podcast dashboard and the podcast RSS feed.* Episode audio is limited to 48MB (per episode). You are free, however, to split episodes into smaller episodes. Only a small subset of the basic analytics will be available. This includes subscriber and listener counts. Episode descriptions will contain a link to Pinecast. Episodes older than the most recent ten are not deleted, but they are not available to view or edit. Upgrading your plan will make them available again. Upgrading to a plan will remove the link to Pinecast from the show's episode descriptions. All analytics data that is collected for higher-tier plans will always be collected for all podcasts (even ones owned by demo accounts), meaning analytics data will retroactively be provided if the account is upgraded. Unavailable Features The following features are not available to demo accounts: Feedback Geo analytics Import tool Ability to create networks Embeddable (HTML5) player Bittorrent downloads Podcast website or blog They have a demo (free) account, Starter ($5/month) and Pro ($50) a month. The pro plans allow you to create a network, and allow you to receive comments on your page, as well as have multiple users on your account. Their free (known as "Community" plans meet the following requirements: These plans may not be used exclusively for marketing, evangelical, or other promotional purposes of any sort. The user's content must provide unique creative or informational value. Things that seem cool but aren't Subscriber counts are pointless. If I subscribe on my phone, my tablet and iTunes it's going to potentially show me as three separate subscribers. I do give them credit for being blatantly honest. On their website it states, "Pinecast will only mark a subscriber a single time in any 24-hour window. Note that this is not a great metric for measuring podcast success; there is no foolproof means of tracking the number of subscribers." There is a tip jar where you put in your bank account information, and when someone leaves you a tip, it goes to your bank. This is done securely through Stripe, but Pinecast is also going to take another 5%. As this is not available on the free plan, I'm not sure why they feel the need to take a cut. Keep in mind that you can make your PayPal donation button in about 2 minutes. Their podcast site needs work, and you have one shot to get it right. I uploaded artwork that was made to the spec they suggested. It looked horrible when I went to go back and upload a new version that was not an option. So here is my checklist 1. Don't mess with my file. What I upload is what I want people to download. - Pass 2. Give me the ability to have an unlimited back catalog (unlimited storage) - Pass 3. Don't limit my audience size (unlimited bandwidth) - Pass 4. Don't control my feed, and make it easy to leave if I choose to do so. I need to be able to put in an iTunes redirect script. - Yes, but you have to ask 5. Give me support. - Yes, Matt answered my email about redirection fairly promptly. 6. Charge me for your service so you can stay in business - Yes. But there is a chance he may get overloaded with free customers. 7. Give me stats so I can see what's working. It would be nice if they were accurate. - Very basic stats What About the Almighty Stats? Listens by Source: This is a breakdown of how your audience is consuming your episodes. "Subscription" means that the listener heard an episode by using the feed for your podcast. "Direct" means the listener clicked a link and downloaded the audio file directly. "Embed" means the listener used the embeddable player to play the episode from a web page. Subscriber History: Whenever your feed is downloaded, Pinecast remembers the fingerprint of that user. Pinecast will only mark a subscriber a single time in any 24-hour window. Note that this is not a great metric for measuring podcast success; there is no foolproof means of tracking the number of subscribers. Listens by Device: When Pinecast can determine what type of device an episode was listened to on, it will break that down here. Note that some podcast software does not reveal this information. Listens by Browser: If Pinecrest can determine the software used to listen to the podcast, it will break that down here. Note that some podcast software will identify itself as other applications (e.g., some applications will identify themselves as iTunes, even though they are not). Listens by OS: If Pinecast can determine the operating system of the listener, it will be broken down in this section. In general, they remind me of podbean stats. So, yes, they have stats. Why You Can't Rely on iTunes I started a podcast called the Podcast New Flash. It's a daily show m-f with quick headlines, reviews, etc. I made it for the Amazon Echo (you can add it to your daily news). I late added it to Twitter and Facebook. I average about 30 downloads. I kept it this way for a month. Then I added it to iTunes. I didn't tell a soul that it was now on iTunes. This way I could see the effect of "being in iTunes." What was the effect of being in iTunes? Almost nothing. Previously I would get around 30 downloads an episode (all twitter and facebook). Now I get 35. I might have 10% of my downloads coming from my RSS feed (meaning subscribers). So what this means is that you need to go to where your audience is, make friends, listen to them, and then tell them about your podcast. Being in iTunes is not the holy grail. It's a convenient place to tell your audience where to go. A better solution is to have a subscribe button on your website. Now granted this is a hyper-niche podcast about podcasting, but I still think you need to realize that it may not bring you a ton of listens. I am rolling today on The Writer Files podcast with a special guest, Emily Esfahani Smith is the author of a fantastic book. Also, you’re a journalist, as well as an author, and writer, and a social psychologist, am I getting that correct? Emily Esfahani Smith: I have a masters in psychology. I wouldn’t necessarily call myself a social psychologist, but I appreciate the compliment. Kelton Reid: Well, it’s really cool, this new book is fantastic and I want to talk more about it, but maybe for listeners to start out, kind of who aren’t familiar with your journey, in your own narrative, you could tell us a little bit about just kind of your origins as a writer. Emily Esfahani Smith: Sure. I grew up just loving to read, and write, and I went to college, though, thinking that I would be a doctor, so I was pre-med and took all the science classes and loved them, actually. But, I also started to get involved with campus journalism when I was in college and just really fell in love with the writing and thought, “Well, maybe this is something that I can try out. Medical school will always be there, I can always go back.” I started kind of focusing my internships and my spare time on building a career as a writer and I graduated in 2009 and started working for a variety of magazines and freelance writing about psychology. One of my articles in 2013 was called, There’s More to Life Than Being Happy, and it was published in The Atlantic and it kind of, it went viral, and it was surprising to me that it did, but it ended up being the basis for this book that I just wrote called, The Power of Meaning. That’s kind of the short answer. Why You Can t Let Your Fear of Failure Stop You from Writing Kelton Reid: Yeah, yeah. That’s a great one and I will link to that Atlantic article, the subtitle was, Meaning Comes from the Pursuit of More Complex Things Than Happiness. That struck a chord, it sounds like. Yeah, so the journalism piece is cool. Of course, you were writing some about Viktor Frankl and his amazing book, Man’s Search for Meaning, which is … I mean, I think it’s timely, but kind of interesting especially now in this complex time in our history. Do you feel like you had that aha moment where you knew for sure you were going to be a writer, like that was going to be your career path? Emily Esfahani Smith: I think that for me, a big obstacle to pursuing writing in those years when I was in college and trying to figure out what my path was, was just that … Was confidence, I guess. It’s not an easy career. It doesn’t pay a lot, but I thought, “Well, I kind of want to try it out,” but I was afraid of failing, or of it not working out. And I was also afraid … There’s so many people who I think when they’re young want to be writers and I thought, “Well, is this just kind of like a fantasy that I too want to be a writer?” The aha moment, for me I think, was one of my professors in college pulled me aside after class and talked to me about, I think a short story that I had written, or maybe a paper, and at the end of the conversation, kind of completely unprompted, he said to me, “Emily, you could really be a writer if you wanted to be.” That was just kind of what I needed to hear to give myself the confidence and the push to actually go and give it my all and pursue it, kind of hearing someone older, who knew me, I guess better than I knew myself, encouraged me. That was an aha moment for me I think. Kelton Reid: Yeah, yeah. Well, you’ve written for some amazing publications, obviously, Wall Street Journal and New York Times, TIME, The Atlantic, New York Magazine. You are also an editor at the Hoover Institution, is that still- Emily Esfahani Smith: Yeah. Kelton Reid: That’s kind of an interesting position. How did you find yourself working with, I guess, a public policy think-tank? Emily Esfahani Smith: Yes. When I was kind of starting out my career as a writer, it quickly became evident to me that there are all kinds of ways that kind of a writer can make writing work financially, and one way is to be an editor. I worked as an editor at a variety of publications and through that got to meet different writers and editors as well. Eventually, I met somebody who was looking for some help editing at the Hoover Institution and said, “If I would be interested …” I had kind of had some experience editing long form pieces that were policy related and was … Don’t write about policy and politics, but find it interesting. And so it ended up working out and it’s been something that I’ve been doing for a number of years, and it keeps me informed, and I really enjoy helping other people kind of edit their writing so it can really be as effective as possible in communicating whatever it is that they’re trying to communicate. Kelton Reid: Cool. Seems like they’re doing some very important work there. I guess we could dovetail into your fantastic new book, The Power of Meaning, and talk a little bit about the process that went into it, I think is interesting. The book itself is, Publisher’s Weekly called, “An enlightening guide to discovering meaning in one’s life.” Dan Pink who has also been on this show, is actually how I discovered the book. He said that, “It definitely tells the story of people, contemporary and historical, who’ve made the quest for meeting the mission of their lives.” It’s very inspiring, so thank you for the book itself. Emily Esfahani Smith: Thanks for saying that. The Extensive Research that Went Into Her Investigation of an Age-Old Question Kelton Reid: Yeah, no, I think like I was trying to say earlier, that I think it’s important for … Especially, for this time in history, where it just seems like a rather tense time for a lot of folks. Yeah, so I mean, I’d love to talk more about kind of how you wrote it, the amount of time and energy, research, that went into it. If we could talk a little bit about the productivity piece. How much research was required, actually, to get this piece of work out there? Emily Esfahani Smith: I worked on the book for about three or four years and a big part of that time was spent doing a lot of research and reporting. I read through, I’m sure, thousands of pages of psychology studies, of philosophy, of literature, trying to understand what these different disciplines said about how to lead a meaningful life. That was one part of the research. The other part, which was a little bit more fun, was getting to travel all around the country and interview all kinds of people about their own stories of what makes their lives meaningful. I went out to a little fishing village on an island in the middle of the Chesapeake Bay and talked to members of that really tight-knit community about why community is an important part of the meaningful life. I went out to Seattle where there’s this church that puts on a medieval prayer service called, Compline, that draws hundreds of people every Sunday night who are both religious and not religious. Some of them are atheist and yet, they’re drawn to this kind of spiritual transcendent experience of Gregorian chant. I talked to them about why beauty and music, how those things can kind of create more meaning in people’s lives. Those were kind of the two parts of the research and putting them together in the book, that was really the writing process. That was a little bit more kind of synthesizing, but also really gratifying in its own way. How the Author Discovered the Four Pillars of Meaning Kelton Reid: Yeah, yeah. Well, it sounds like an extensive amount of research. Then, before you kind of sat down to sort it all out, how were you kind of synthesizing the meaning of it all? Emily Esfahani Smith: Well, so I wrote the book kind of with these two kind of ideas driving it that basically determined the structure of the book. The one was that we are creatures that kind of seek meaning and yearn for meaning and that this desire for meaning is actually stronger in us and needs to be satisfied more than our desire for happiness. Meaning really should be the goal that we pursue, and happiness will come as a result of that. The first part of the book kind of talks a little bit about the difference between meaning and happiness, but then after that I really wanted to understand, What does it mean to lead a meaningful life? How can you find meaning in life? I went to the research kind of with that question in mind thinking that I’ll sort through all this research and see if there are certain themes that come up again and again in the research and in the stories about what people say about what makes their lives meaningful. I was kind of just like sifting through the research and in that process these four themes came up again and again. They’re a sense of belonging, a sense of purpose, storytelling, and transcendence, and those were … When people told me what makes their lives meaningful when they wrote about it in surveys and in the research, they were usually talking about one of those four themes, so those are the pillars of meaning I argue. Kelton Reid: Well, yeah, I mean and it’s a fantastic read and there’s so much in there to kind of savor and unpack and I love it. I mean, you go from Tolstoy to Gandhi to Camus, and then somehow end up at Louis C.K., which I found very entertaining. The storytelling itself is absolutely compelling and then the research piece obviously kind of drives it. Kudos on the work itself, it’s a fantastic book. I’m enjoying it very much. Emily s Thoughts on Workflow and Writer s Block Kelton Reid: Then, when you begin the writing process and you’re actually going for word counts or pages, how are you doing that? Are you writing every day? Were you blocking parts of your day out to just write? How did you get into kind of a flow state to get it all down? Emily Esfahani Smith: When I was writing the book it was pretty much all day, every day writing. I tend to be more of a morning person, so I would wake up early and would usually just start writing after preparing myself a little bit. Then, I would, just, for as many hours as I could, until I just couldn’t take it anymore. I would kind of sit there with the ideas and try to wrestle with them and get them down on a page. Some days that went more smoothly than others. A lot of times it was a real struggle kind of writing … Spending hours, like all day long, writing a paragraph only at the end of the day to realize the paragraph doesn’t belong in this section, and so deleting it and therefore kind of not really making much progress, it felt like. Those were the bad days, but there were also many good days where I probably was able to write at least, I think, a thousand words a day. I don’t keep track of it specifically, but I think on a good day I can probably put out a thousand words a day that I feel comfortable with. Kelton Reid: Are you a writer who can stick on headphones, or do you need silence to kind of sort things out? Emily Esfahani Smith: Definitely need silence and I kind of … If there’s any noise at all, it’s a distraction for me. I will use noise canceling headphones, I’ll put earplugs in, but ideally I’ll find a place that’s just as silent as possible to write from. Kelton Reid: Well, here’s the million dollar question. Do you believe in writer’s block? Emily Esfahani Smith: Writer’s block So, I think, I guess it depends on how you define writer’s block. I’ve certainly experienced moments where I come to a point and I don’t know where to go after that, or I don’t know how to start the article, or start the chapter. I think that it’s not because I’m incapable of writing, it’s usually because I don’t know enough yet, so I need to go back and do more research, talk to more people, and then I can come back to it and put my thoughts together a little bit more easily. So for me, writer’s block is usually a symptom of not having done enough research. Kelton Reid: Yeah, yeah, for sure. All right. Well, let’s talk about a few workflow items. Are you a Mac or a PC user? Emily Esfahani Smith: I am a Mac user. I have a MacBook Air, which is nice and small and I can put in my purse, which is great. Kelton Reid: Yes, yes. Are you using primarily Microsoft Word or are you a Scrivener writer? Emily Esfahani Smith: I used to … Word used to be my default, but these days I’m actually using Google Drive more often, because I can … Sometimes when I get into writing I will be very obsessive about it and every spare moment of my day, if I’m in cab, or if I’m on the subway, I’ll want to kind of go back to the piece and spend time with it. I can do that with Google Drive by just having my phone on me, so that’s really helpful. Kelton Reid: Yeah, absolutely. I’ve found that too. Thanks so much for joining me for this half of a tour through the writer’s process. Everybody knows that if you can’t lose weight and keep it off, you need thyroid meds, right? Wrong! Thyroid drugs are most certainly not the answer. Common thyroid drugs like levothyroxine, but known by many other names too have long been used with little success in the treatment of underactive thyroid, Hashimoto's disease, enlarged thyroid gland, thyroid cancer, and myxedema. They are also prescribed on the false belief that they help weight loss in hypothyroid people who can’t shed excess fat. But it doesn’t work. Only small amounts of fat, if any, can be lost. Once thyroid hormones are stopped, fat is regained. And this is true even when thyroid medication is continued for years. By the way, Synthroid is now the fourth most prescribed drug in the United States. There can also be all sorts of negative consequences in allowing your body to be treated with these synthetic chemicals that can seriously interfere with your quality of life. For one, they compete with natural hormones that your thyroid gland is still producing. You see, it’s not feasible for any human body filled with synthetic chemicals to be tricked into responding to them as though they were bio-equivalent, despite the claims of drug companies and the medical establishment, who tell you that drugs used to treat your body are an identical equivalent. The standard medical model for the treatment of thyroid disorders is badly flawed. There are huge misunderstandings about causes and effective treatments for thyroid deficiencies, which, by the way, may now affect as many as 90% of women in the Western world. A great place to begin getting an understanding of all of this is by reading the work of Dr. David Brownstein, author of Overcoming Thyroid Disorders and Iodine: Why You Need It, Why You Can’t Live Without It (third edition). Brownstein is a leading expert in natural approaches to health and healing. He talks about something you need to know and probably have never been told: a major cause of thyroid malfunction, as well as many other conditions, is iodine deficiency. There will be more about this in a moment. In his books, his videos, and his DVDs, Brownstein shows how a natural holistic program can not only help transform hypothyroidism but also arthritis, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, Hashimoto’s disease, and many other conditions by using safe, natural therapies. His work can bring you reliable information on such things as: Natural thyroid hormone Bioidentical natural hormones Diet Vitamins and minerals essential for thyroid function Detoxification. Now, back to your thyroid. The thyroid has an enormous need for natural iodine. This was once readily available in our food supply, but it no longer is because of poor agriculture, GMO growing of foods, and common practices, including the spraying of dangerous substances such as mercury and aluminum on soils. An abundance of natural iodine is necessary for your thyroid’s biochemical structures. If you do not get enough of it, your thyroid can malfunction. And of course, one consequence of this malfunction is weight gain—which no amount of pharmaceutical thyroid drugs will ever be able to correct. Note that it is absolutely crucial to work with a knowledgeable healthcare practitioner who knows how to test for and reverse iodine deficiency, not just a doctor who will thoughtlessly prescribe drugs. It’s estimated that more than half of the world’s population is already at risk from iodine deficiency, which relates to many other illnesses, including cancer. With the nuclear fallout that has come from Fukushima and other sources where an iodine deficiency exists, the thyroid gland is most vulnerable to taking up dangerous radioactive iodine. When we eat and drink foods such as baked goods and soft drinks in plastic containers, take drugs, and are subjected to pesticides in the foods we eat, we become exposed to the bromine they contain. This also creates iodine deficiencies as well as increasing our risk of cancer. Meanwhile, with the decline in iodine-rich foods like seaweeds, fish, Himalayan salt, and eggs—not to mention the introduction of fluoridated water—virtually none of us are getting the iodine we need. By far the most effective treatment for low thyroid are the use of natural thyroid hormones and cofactors in desiccated form. Sadly, most doctors still refuse to prescribe them, despite the fact that these natural treatments made from bovine or porcine sources are available by prescription. Good quality nutritional supplements are also important for a healthy thyroid, including vitamin A, vitamin B complex with high levels of B-12, vitamin C, vitamin E, coenzyme Q-10, and the minerals magnesium, manganese, selenium, and zinc as well as natural iodine. Every cell in your body uses iodine. However, the federally defined Daily Value (150 micrograms) is way too low to help your overall health except to barely prevent goiter. If adjusting your diet and exercising more hasn't helped you reach a healthy body fat composition, it may well be that your thyroid is underperforming due to iodine deficiency. However, there is one quite remarkable supplement that is excellent for restoring levels of natural iodine to the body and is especially helpful in restoring thyroid functions. It is known as Iodoral. Dr Brownstein, whose clinical experience with it is extensive, recommends it highly. I can also recommend Iodoral from my own thyroid issues. At the age of 12, I was diagnosed as hypothyroid and prescribed the usual pharmaceutical. I was told that this would deal with this issue. I took the pills for exactly seven days and hated them. So I stopped taking them. Since then, I have never taken anything whatsoever to “treat” my own thyroid gland. Instead, I’ve learned how to eat organic natural foods and avoid cereals, grains, and sugars. This has stood me in good stead. However, I decided to explore the effect of taking Iodoral on my body in increasing my intake of iodine. The results have been extraordinary. I have more energy now than I have ever had. I am eternally grateful for this. I recommend you examine Brownstein’s work. You will find it both enriching and fascinating. Also investigate Iodoral 50mg and check out this excellent video. It has changed my life and it could change yours. There's a difference between the "four-hour workweek" and magic. You can create revenue in a short week. You can't create magic. Magic is what we all want to create with our work. Most of us love our work. It gives us purpose and satisfaction. And yes, we'd love a "three-month" paid vacation—or just any vacation at all. And that's the goal. The goal is to work hard, but to also have a great time. Yup, it's the Psychotactics Website ===== Why You Can't Outsource Magic I don't mow the lawns. I outsource it. I don't do my accounts. It's what keeps my accountant in business. I bake my own bread, cook my own food, but at least half of the time it's all outsourced. In fact, when I think about it, a good chunk of my life is outsourced. I don't build my own computers, code my own programs, generate my own electricity. I didn't even bother to weave my own carpet. So yes, you could safely say that outsourcing is a good part of my life. What I don't outsource is magic It's magical to write my own articles. Do my own books. Draw my own cartoons. Answer my own email. When I think about those who keep yearning for a "four-hour" work week, I find it incredibly weird and unsettling. I think of Leonardo da Vinci spending only four hours a week, painting. I think of Michelangelo goofing off on David and just putting in the least amount of time. I think of the wine I drink and how it would taste if the wine maker decided not to put in 50-60 hours a week. I remember the movies that moved me, the food that tantalised my taste buds, the books that have elevated my senses. I think of all the magic the world has seen, felt and experienced over the years and a "four hour" workweek makes zero-sense to me. You can create money in four hours You can't create magic. Money isn't magic. It may seem that way, when you're slogging in a job that you have no control over. A life that seems to pull and push you in all directions. At that point, money and magic may seem like one and the same thing. And yet it's not. Work is magic Work well done, is something we all yearn for. And try as you may, you can't outsource the important stuff in life. So when some internet marketer comes along and tells you that a four-hour work week is magical, they're just equating work with money. That somehow you could work for four hours in a week, and make all the money and you'd be happy. I can assure you that you'd be happy for a while, but then you'd seek magic. And magic yup, that takes a lot more time and effort. I wake up at 4 am every day and have done so for many years I don't have to wake up. We've done well over the years. We have a business which attracts really phenomenal customers. Some of them have been with us for over 12 years (considering we're Internet-based, that's like a hundred years). Our workshops are always full. Our courses often sell out in an hour or so sometimes 20 minutes. We've banked enough, own enough, travel three months in a year. Truly speaking, if we were to stop working now, we could go for at least another 20-30 years, living our comfortable lifestyle. So why wake up at 4 am? Why put in 99 cartoons in a book when people are happy to just buy text? Why bother to re-write, re-engineer our courses by 20-30% every year? It's all extra work, isn't it? More hours in a day, month and year that seems to slip by increasingly faster. The answer lies in magic You can outsource some stuff, and you should. But to create the Mona Lisa, David and some fine wine yup, that's going to take a chunky 50-60 hours a week. Get used to it!
