Missions Update I want to begin this morning with a missions update from our partners in India. We support two couples, Tia and Atula and Murry and Louivani. They have a two-fold mission. First they train up students in a seminary and provide them training for the pastorate and the mission field. Recently they have moved their seminary from Bagalore which is the tech capital of the world to a more strategic spot in the north called Nagaland. It’s a little different up here. The reason they moved their seminary is because there is access to the neighboring countries, Mynmar, Bangladesh, Butan. Their seminary is in the city but they can, in a relatively short period of time, reach into the tribes and minister to them. This a mix of spiritism anamism, budhism, muslim and hindu. It’s an incredible opportunity. They recently purchased a plot of land for a seminary and we have been saving to give toward this project so we were able to give $40,000 toward this facility and we are so excited to be partners with them. You or I would have a hard time getting into some of these countries, but many of the students and graduates are either from these countries or are going there as missionaries. We are so thankful to be in partnership with them. Please pray for them as they work so hard for the Lord. Introduction Have you ever been confronted by someone and you know the message is true but you refuse to admit it. In fact, you MUST NOT confess it because the implications are too overwhelming. Let me give you an example in my own life. We built an extra room onto the side of our house a few years ago. My wife and I had agreed on the design. So I’m framing up the walls and I’m really exciting that I’m making good progress. I’m efficient, I’m being incredibly productive. I’m flying. Lisa had been gone running some errands and couldn’t wait to show her how much progress I had made. So she comes in and I can tell by the look on her face something’s wrong. I hate that look. And sure enough she says, “Well, that’s not going work. We need another window right here." And I could feel my emotional zeal for life getting sucked out of my soul like a tornado. So I objected,”What do you mean you don’t like it? What’s not to like? Why do we need another window?" And then she gave me some reasons. Well: It would be more symmetrical. It would let in more light. It would give the room a more open feel. Now if you were to stop me right there. Objectively speaking, do you agree with her points. I would have said yes to all three, an emphatic yes. I actually love windows. Here’s what I said: I mean, symmetry? It’s is all a matter of perspective. Symmetrical to what? Sometimes asymmetrical looks better. Let in more light? There’s giant trees shading the whole yard. That’s not going to let it more light? What do you mean open feel? Define open. The ceilings are vaulted and 15 feet high. How much more open can you get? The insanity! I agreed with her and yet I communicated disagreement. Why? Because I didn’t like the implication of her being right. If she’s right than I’ve got to tear down and and rebuild and I don’t want to. Now in the end, I confessed. She smiled. And the room looks awesome. Now it’s one thing to have to tear out a few studs and rebuild a partial portion of a single wall; it’s one thing to swallow a bit of pride and lose an hour or so of my life. Not so big a deal. But it’s another thing entirely to realize that your entire life, everything you have worked so hard for, has been built upon the wrong foundation. To realize that every stud you’ve laid, every nail you’ve pounded, every ounce of energy you’ve invested, every dollar you spent, everything - 100% of it needs to be tore out. Why? Because the entire foundation of you life is incorrect. It needs to be jackhammered out, hauled to the dump and you need to reform and repour the whole thing. Everything you have been living for has been a complete waste. That, my friends, EVEN IF YOU ARE 100 percent convinced, is not easy to admit. You see, this is why many cannot come to Jesus Christ. Not because they don’t have enough evidence, not because they suspect the evidence is untrue. The real issue - and it operates mostly on the level of the subconscious - is that they don’t like the implications of the evidence. In our passages last week Jesus said, “I am the bread of life.” If you accept that, if you believe that Jesus is in fact the ONLY source of TRUE LIFE, then that necessarily DEMANDS that things you’ve been chasing are NOT life.* The career, the girl, the family, the money, the glory, the degree, the job. These things are NOT life. If you admit that Jesus Christ is the source of LIFE, then you have to admit you’ve been wasting your life barking up the wrong tree. And that means we need to break out the jackhammer and break up the foundation upon which we’ve built our entire life. Today, all of us will be offended at some aspect of the message. This is maybe the most offensive chapter in all the Bible. So, if you aren’t offended, I probably haven’t done my job. But here’s the encouragement, if you can receive it, there’s life waiting for you. True life. Abundant life. Everlasting life. Review Let’s review. Last week we saw Jesus confronting the shallow interest of the crowds. He was confronting this shallow, genie-in-a-bottle interest in Jesus’ miracle working ability. They wanted Jesus to fill their belly, to add another couple zero’s on the end of their bank account. They didn’t want him. They only wanted what they could get from him. Jesus confronted this; you guys are all focused on the plane of your crude human needs. You need to stop looking for bread that perishes and instead work for the bread that never perishes. And the natural question is well, what is the bread that never perishes and how do I get it? What is the bread. Jesus says? I am the bread of life. John 6:40, “…everyone who looks on the Son and believes in him should have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.” LIFE! Zoa. Jesus is claiming to be that life. And the way you get it is to believe. Believe who Jesus claims to be. Everything we read last week was the claim. What we are going to see this week and next week is the response. And here is what we are going to discover. This claim that Jesus is the bread of life come down from heaven is UNIVERSALLY OFFENSIVE. No human being who truly hears and understands what Jesus is saying accepts it without offense. Today we are going to look at five ways that Jesus’ offer to be the bread of life offends us and how we can move from offense to worship. So Jesus has just finished saying, “I am the bread of life”. Here’s the response from the religious leaders. Jesus is offering them eternal LIFE in himself; but in order to get the life you have to believe the claim. Jesus has them on the horns of a dilemma. Because on the one hand they cannot outright dismiss him. Why? He’s been healing people like crazy. He just multiplied bread and fish so as to feed 10,000 people. He’s healed the blind, lame, deaf. So they cannot dismiss him, but on the other hand, his claims are outright unbelievable, “I have come down from heaven?” Come on!? Now, they have to come up with some sort of explanation for what they see and hear but this is not it. Even though it doesn’t say it outright, I could guess at their explanation. Here’s a miracle worker; miracle workers in the Bible are prophets. They’ve got a category for that. That’s what made sense to them. Here’s a man, a regular homo-sapien, who has prophet-like access to God. That’s what my intuition tells me. But Jesus says. Nope. Here’s what’s really going on. I have come down from heaven. Just like we would say, “I’ve come down from McCall,” Jesus said, “I actually used to live in heaven. Now I live here on earth.”Jesus says, I came down from heaven. It’s a major focus of chapter 6. Look how many time the phrase is used in chapter 6. How could a man come down from heaven? That’s totally and completely counter-intuitive. Jesus says, your right. “I’m actually not a man.” God has given me power to raise the dead and judge the world. You see, I am a GOD-MAN. Well I wasn’t expecting that! How could a God-man look just like me? They definitely had an expectation about Messiah and it wasn’t this. If Jesus is who he claims, God come down from heaven, I certainly wouldn’t expect him to come this way. So normally. So undramatically. To Nazareth? Does anything good come out of Nazareth? My intuition tells me coming from heaven doesn’t work like that. But let me ask you, “Does that make it not true?” Just because something isn’t intuitive, doesn’t make it untrue. The theory of relativity is not intuitive - at all. Does that make it not true? Something that upsets our intuition and upsets our expectations is not evidence of it not being true. It’s just evidence that our intuition and expectations are incorrect. There are thousands of things that are counterintuitive but are still true. To refuse them on the basis that they upset intuition is to the epitome of pride because it makes conformity to intuition the definition of truth. I wouldn’t have expected Messiah to turn water into wine is a strange miracle to begin the public ministry of Jesus Christ. So be it. My expectations are wrong. Shall I be offended or learn from it? Humility is letting truth inform your intuition. In fact is often the act of upsetting expectations and intuitions that lead us to the truth. Before you became a Christian you might have had a way to explain Christian behavior. I know why religious people try to be moral. They are trying to work their way to heaven. But then you realize, nobody who is a true follower of Christ is trying to work their way to heaven. That counter-intuitive discovery will lead you to the truth. Jesus says, “I am the Bread of Life.” That claim offends our intuition. That’s our first point. In other words, when Jesus says, “I am the bread of life” our natural inclination is to say, thank you but no thank you. I don’t want that. When Jesus hears them grumbling about having come down from heaven he says, Now you think the first two were offensive. This, to many, is downright repugnant. What we are reading about here is what theologians call the doctrine of election. Election speaks to the divine force responsible BEHIND our CHOICE to submit to God. Or to state it more simply, “Who chooses God? Do you choose God or does God choose you?” This is a thorny question. You come at this question wrong and your liable to get poked and bleed. But if we’ve learned anything thus far in the sermon. Don’t trust your intuition and don’t assume it’s going to be like you expected. Do we really expect God to match our human intuitions? Don’t judge by the external appearance alone. If you watch any survival shows, you know that a barrel cactus can save your life in the desert because beneath the spiny exterior is a storehouse of life-giving water. The doctrine of election is like a spiny barrel cactus. Many will pass over it’s life giving water never knowing it’s even there. Some have heard that there is water inside, but get injured drinking it and then run away. But there are others who carefully listen to the instructions, pierce through that spiny exterior and the water is the sweetest, most satisfying, most nutritious, life-giving drink you could imagine and it quenches the thirsty soul. Here’s how the doctrine presents itself in the passage. The pharisees grumble at the claim that Jesus is from heaven. They don’t like it. And Jesus say, “Well that’s not surprising. That’s to be expected.” Why? Because no one can come to me unless the father who sent me draws him. In other words, he’s saying, unless the Father draws you, you will never find me attractive. Without God working on your heart, you won’t ever want me. Paul says the same thing in Romans 3:10: What does this doctrine teach? It teaches that the problem with the human condition is broken desire. We want the wrong things. We love the wrong things. There is a fundamental inability. Now what is that inability in specifics. Let me illustrate. Imagine for a moment that I sit you down at a table and give you two choices. On your left you have toasted cream brule and on your right you have ground up worms and slugs. Which would you choose? Okay, maybe that was a fluke. Let’s run the experiment again. cream brule or the ground up worms and slugs? 1000 times out of a thousand. 10,000 times out of 10,000 you will never choose the worm compote. Why? Is the problem that you cannot eat the worm and slugs? It’s not that I can’t eat it; it’s that I can’t want it. That’s my problem. The inability is in the domain of desire. When Paul says, “the natural mind is hostile to God” or “no one comes to me unless the father draws him” he’s saying not saying they can’t come to God, he’s saying they can’t want to. Our unaffected desires never move toward God. What the Bible teaches is that for us to move toward God, he’s got to move toward us. And the form of that movement is the love of God being pressed upon our hearts. The love of the Father is prior. It’s aggressive. It pounces. I want to talk about two things here: order and cause. There’s an order and a cause. Both are important. The order is God FIRST, then us. God’s love was first. And then that initiating love CAUSED us to love him. It is because he FIRST loved us that we then love him. That’s what Jesus is saying here, “No one can come to me, unless the father draws him.” This is offensive. Why? Because it strips us of any reason we can be congratulated. We can’t take credit for our good choice. If you make a good investment, you can take credit for it. But if the stock company accidentally liquidates your investments and transfers it to another portfolio and it skyrockets, you can’t congratulate yourself. God drew you. Is that what you expected? - No. Is that intuitive? - No. But is true? Absolutely. Now you may say, “No I choose Christ. He didn’t choose me.” Well, fine. But be consistent. If you are the one who chooses him, how do you know that someday you will not unchoose him? You can’t have it both ways. How do you know that you won’t foul the whole thing up again? Adam was created perfect and fouled the whole thing up. How do you know you won’t foul the whole thing up again? You see, here’s the beauty of it. Here’s why this doctrine is sweet, life-giving water. Because if God is the one who draws you, he is also the one who will keep you. And he is the one who will raise you up on the last day. And that’s exactly what he says next. Now my intellect is being confronted. Here’s why Jesus is not okay with their grumbling. Their grumbling was dangerous. Our grumbling is dangerous. Maybe you are grumbling about the nature of election. Why is that bad? Because it presupposed that our brain is the ultimate court in which God gets sorted out. If we just discuss this long enough, through our intellect and talking the matter over…with enough thought, we can make sense of this. If I can’t make sense of it, if the supreme court of my brain can’t sort this thing out, then it cannot be true. Here is the severe warning. As long as we are content to remain, confident in our own ability, our own intellect, our own intuitive sense of how things ought to be we will never seek divine insight and intellect outside ourselves. As long as we are content to assess our experience and the meaning of our experience using our own methods, we cannot come to the Christ. This is an issue of authority. When there is a contradiction who wins. It does not make sense to my intuition. I don’t desire it. And I can’t understand it. Yet, Jesus says it’s true. Which one wins? This is what is at stake. Jesus says, “They will all be taught by God.” This is a paraphrase of Isaiah 54:13, addressed to the restored city of Jerusalem that the prophet foresees: ‘All your sons will be taught by the LORD, and great will be your children’s peace.’ It’s a picture of restored Jerusalem drinking in knowledge from the source of knowledge. Jesus, you tell me what is true. You know that feeling when you are talking to an expert in their field. And they start explaining something and your brain goes into record mode. I trust every word that comes out of his or her mouth. That’s the picture. Total authority. Absolute knowledge. You believe it because you trust it because it’s true. The bread of life insults our intuition, offends our desire, disregards our intelligence, and now offends our vitality. What is meant here. There is a certain amount of pride that we carry within us that relates to our sense of vitality. I’m young and pretty. I’m young and athletic. I hike. I bike. I’m an academic. I’m an artist. I raft. These are all evidences of vitality. Jesus says, “That’s cute. But your going to die.” This is a nod to how we began our message last week. We are all dying. We are all playing a game of who can keep the water cupped in our hands the longest. What we didn’t talk about was why? Why are we dying? Answer: because we are starving. If you stop eating food you don’t die instantly. It takes a little bit of time. But you do die eventually. It’s a slow process of starving the body of what it needs. And because we are not eating the spiritual bread of life, we are dying. Well, Jesus says, if you want to live forever, if you want to have eternal zoa, then you need to eat the bread of life. Now here’s is where the offense, turns to disgust which turns to revulsion. Now here’s our final point. This offer of life offends our intuition, our desire, our intellect, our vitality. And finally…. What in the world does Jesus mean that we need to eat his flesh and drink his blood? First off, obviously this is a metaphor. But he’s pressing here, isn’t he. Let’s go back to what he said earlier in the text. Jesus said, if you want to receive the bread of heaven, you can’t work to receive it. The one work that earns the bread of heaven is to confess that you can’t do anything to earn the bread of heaven. That’s what he’s saying. You have to receive it. You have to believe in it. That’s how you receive it. You receive it by believing it. But then when we get here in verses 53–59, we see Jesus continually using present-tense verbs having to do with feeding. It’s clear that to be a Christian means to be continually in a process of feeding on Christ. And the terms are very graphic. The idea, is that being a Christian is not something you can dabble in. You have to take it inside of you. Think about food. If you want food to sustain you, you can’t be independent of it. Their is real power for it to sustain you. But exists out here. And you will die unless you take in inside of you. And it gets dissolved down and actually becomes part of you. That energy now courses through your veins. Being a Christian means that Jesus Christ becomes part of you in that way. That’s where the metaphor is pointing. As post crucifixion Christians understand the imagery far better than they did then. Jesus’ body was broken for us. His blood was spilled for us. And so taking that into us, means accepting the substitutionary sacrifice. The imagery of the OT sacrificial lamb now makes all the sense in the world. Remember passover was at hand here. Remember the first passover. The angel of death was going to go throughout all the land of Egypt and destroy every firstborn male. But if you killed a lamb and put it’s blood which symbolized it’s life over the doorpost, that angel of death would passover. And what were you to do with the lamb itself. You were to eat it. And it’s life given for you would now enter into you and sustain your life. That’s the picture. Communion Could we do church today and not do communion? My goodness, no. We come to the table this morning, ready to symbolically eat the flesh and drink the blood. It confronts and offends at almost every level. It offends my intuition, my expectations, ability, intellect, vitality and my independence. Why would we ever do it? Answer: Because it is the path to everlasting zoa. Life exists in the person of Jesus Christ. It’s in him. You cannot be independent of Jesus and live. What Jesus is really focusing on here is SOURCE. Where is the source of life to be found? Jesus says, I live BECAUSE of the Father. You will only live BECAUSE of me. I am the SOURCE of life. And you have to take me in. Now I want to illustrate this principle. You probably learned in elementry school that all life on planet earth exists because of the sun. It is the source of life. Well animals eat the plants or other animals and the plants get their energy from the sun. Not only all life, but all power. Cars move around because of fossil fuels. What are fossil fuels? They are decomposed buried dead organism - things that used to be alive. We get electricity from hydroelectric plants. Where does the rain water that powers the giant turbines at the bottom of dams come from? Evaporation from the ocean which is from the sun. Solar panels from the sun. Windpower from heating and cooling that comes from the sun. If it moves, is heated, reproduces, eats, grows.. it’s all from the sun. Jesus Christ is claiming take it one step further. And the sun exists because of me. “I am the bread of LIFE.” I am the SOURCE of everything. You cannot be INDEPENDENT of me and live. If you live, you will live BECAUSE OF me. Just as the SUN is the source of all power and life on earth so the SON is the SOURCE of the SOURCE. I am the SOURCE of ETERNAL LIFE, both bios and zoa. Can you see what it means to make him your Bread? Something is your meat and drink. Something is what you are making a beeline for because you think that’s living. Is it him? Is it a personal relationship with him? If it isn’t it will spoil. It will not endure, and neither will you. Come and eat the Bread and labor for the Bread and take the Bread that endures to eternal life.
This week I did another album review on The White Stripes' album Elephant. It was a fun episode to record and has one of my favorite songs ever in it as the Y. The beat to the song is so well known it became a sports chant. Additionally, I go over Black Math and Ball and Biscuit plus two more songs. Let me know your answers to this week's podcast questions by sending me a message on Instagram at Jd4unc. If you haven't yet go check out season 5 episode 2 with special guest Evan Statile. Well It's a New year, and a new apartment for Ryan and Wade. They just need some quick cash for the first month's rent. Luckily, this sheepish, creepy dude needs a babysitter, tonight! Surely nothing sinister is happening at his house, in the middle of nowhere. It is literally too good to be true! Won’t you join them for TI West's The House of the Devil, for Episode 11 of Black Ooze Presents? Hey, look! Volvo! Special , thanks to Andy Matlock (The Ghost in the Machine) for joining in this week and as always for the amazing music and sound engineering.
Cloud spending is still growing. Just not as fast as it was a year ago. But many expect that will change next year, with the return of growing growth. (If that makes any sense). Why? Well IT budgets might be better off if the economy returns to life. And many companies are realizing they need access to cloud services to stay competitive. If you can't hire a team of data scientists, you can still tap into AI by using a service like Amazon SageMaker. Also, a lot of governments are waking up the cloud era and realizing that they just haven't created enough rules for this area yet. Different regions around the world are introducing new regulatory requirements about how data is stored, transferred, and accessed. To react to new laws, companies want improved agility. Here today to walk us through it all is Craig Tavares, the global head of cloud at Aptum.
Pastor Daniel Simmons preaches from 1 Peter 5 on Shepherds for our Life Together Series. Who Are Shepherds and What Do We Do With Them? 1 Peter 5:1-7 Exegetical Main Point: Peter calls Shepherds and sheep to humble themselves before God in their respective roles. Main Point of the Sermon: : Shepherds, humble yourselves before God in the way you serve, and sheep, in the way you submit yourselves to your shepherds. Introduction I’m a PK, a pastor’s kid so I grew up in the church. And that experienced is quite mixed. I have many fond memories like singing with my family in the church pews, often being led by my Dad. But I also experienced a lot of confusion as I watched my parents endure very painful situations. My dad faced much defeat in his ministry, including many complaints against him, some small and some more substantial. The most challenging actually was a few years back when about fifteen members of his two-year-old church plant came to him just before a Sunday service and asked him to resign because they didn’t feel like the church was growing fast enough under his leadership. I’ve been in your shoes also as a sheep submitting to flawed men. I could share a number of other stories of ways I’ve been hurt by church leaders. I’ve also ministered as a shepherd, trying to care for sometimes very challenging people and have also been made all the more aware of my weaknesses and sin, which can be very discouraging. Pastor Mark Devers recently said that he’s getting calls almost daily from men who are ready to step away from ministry because of its challenges. Now, I’m not there, but as both a sheep and a shepherd, there’s been a lot of joy, but also pain for me in the church. And what’s sad about this is that I’m not the exception. We’ve been reminded in the last few weeks just how common this experience is for both sheep and shepherd. This sermon is titled “Who Are Shepherds and What Do We Do With Them?” We are including this sermon as part of our Life Together series because: God has set up his church with a particular structure of leadership that we want to follow in an accurate and healthy way. So, today we will explore what the Bible says about 1) who shepherds are 2) what they are called to do and 3) how the church (the sheep) should respond to them. We’re including this sermon because, historically, communities rise and fall based on its leadership. Good Christian leaders have been catalysts for great Gospel movements and others have brought about disgrace to Christ’s name and have led many astray by both their teaching and their character. So, as your God-ordained shepherds, we want to remind you of the commitment we make to you as your pastors and invite you to hold us accountable as we seek to faithfully fulfill the call God has given us to shepherd the flock. Because there are so many opportunities for suffering for both sheep and shepherds in the church, we want to offer comfort to you that God will ultimately reward your suffering as each of us endure through trust in God. Let’s Pray GOD: Context: Speed through this. We just read from 1 Peter, a book written by the Apostle Peter most likely around the mid-60’s A.D. to the many churches near and far who were being persecuted. These churches were hurting, confused, discouraged and they needed comfort. So, Peter, who had both witnessed Christ’s sufferings and resurrection and himself was enduring suffering, wanted to show God’s people how to suffer faithfully as they follow Christ. Our text applies the same message to both sheep and shepherds. Let’s look at verse 1. vv. 1-2 So I exhort the elders among you, as a fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, as well as a partaker in the glory that is going to be revealed: Who – office of elder The Apostle Peter exhorts the elders among the churches. His letter would have been heard by everyone in the churches, and Peter had a specific exhortation for the elders. That word “exhort” is a strong one. It’s not a “maybe try this” but a “you must do this” urgent kind of word for the elders. Who are the elders? I need to get nerdy here for a minute. (I’m sorry for stealing your thunder, Ross. Ross is our resident nerd on staff. Truthfully, I don’t know where our church would be without him.) The word “elder” comes from the Greek word πρεσβύτερος, meaning relatively advanced in age (BDAG). The elderly of the community were generally the wiser who would lead. Now, we know from the book of Timothy that not all elders were elderly – Timothy was a young man appointed by the Apostle Paul as an elder – but they were regardless the wiser and more mature of the community who were appointed to lead the church. This leadership office is also called overseer in Scripture, but elder is the most commonly used title for the leaders of the church. So the Bible teaches that an elder is a particular office of the church appointed by God to lead the church. How were they appointed? In Acts we see Paul and Barnabas appointing elders for the churches in each town, and likewise, Titus, Paul’s disciple, is called to do the same. So elders are simply sheep themselves who are appointed by other elders who see that they are qualified and competent to lead God’s church. Notice also that Peter address “elder(s)” (plural) among you. Consistently, in the Bible you will find churches being led by not just one man but by a plurality of elders (Titus 1:5; Acts 14:23; 1 Pet. 5:1-2). This is important, though it has been overlooked by many in our generation to the detriment of the church. One important reason for this is that each elder has different gifts used to equip the church – some elders thrive at starting new churches, some at teaching, some at making disciples, and some at calling their community to repentance. Without multiple leaders with multiple gifts, the church suffers. I’m not saying every church has to have every one of these gifts present on the elder team, though that would be ideal, but rather that God appoints a plurality of leaders for the good of the church. Further, we know from the list of qualifications for elders in Timothy and Titus that elders must be men (1 Tim. 3:1-7; Titus 1:5-9). Scripture teaches that this detail is an implication of God’s created order. He made man first and then the women. Just as in the home God calls men to lovingly lead their wives, so too in the church he calls men to lovingly lead the congregation. In both cases, this position of leadership is one of sacrifice and responsibility, not comfort and privilege, as we’ll see in just a minute. So Peter addresses the elders, and he addresses them as a “fellow elder”. Not only is he an Apostle, he also served as an elder of God’s church. Further, Peter reminds the elders that he is a witness of the sufferings of Christ and that he is also “a partaker in the glory that is going to be revealed.” I believe Peter is reminding them of his qualification to make such a charge. As someone who saw Christ die with his own eyes, and who is himself enduring suffering with Christ and these other men, he is basically saying, “We’re in this together, elders, I share in both your suffering and the future hope. So, what is the exhortation? We’ve explored the “who” of pastors. Now we get into the “what” or the function of elders. What are we called to do? Read verse 2. 2 shepherd the flock of God that is among you, exercising oversight… First, the image Scripture gives of God’s church should warm your heart. Whatever your view or experience of the church, I need you to see that God sees his church as his flock. If you remember Psalm 23, “The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want,” you’ll know that God loves his flock very much. He cares for his people tenderly and carefully, like a shepherd would care for his flock. And God has called others, like Peter, into fellowship with him to love and care for his flock alongside him. You may remember that Peter was called by Jesus just before his ascension to feed his lambs. Now, this same Peter reminds the elders to have this same mind – “shepherd God’s flock.” Elders are shepherds. This is where we get the word “pastor” that we use so commonly for elders. Pastor is a Latin word meaning Shepherd. Elders, or pastors, are shepherds who care for the sheep, the people of God. How are they to care for the sheep? What better example than Christ who calls himself “the Good Shepherd”. Whereas David calls Yahweh his Shepherd in Psalm 23, Jesus claims in John 10 to be that Shepherd. He says, “I am the door of the sheep… if anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly. I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep” (vv. 7-11). Slow down here: Jesus’s point is that he has come to give his people everything they need for abundant life, even unto eternal life. Even though the shepherds of Israel had failed for many years to lead the people to God, God promised in Ezekiel 34:15 “I myself will tend my sheep and have them lie down, declares the Sovereign Lord.” Friends, Jesus fulfills this promise. God came in the person of Christ to rescue us! He is the GOOD Shepherd. He is the good leader humanity needs and has been longing for. So when Jesus calls Peter to feed his lambs, and likewise, Peter calls the elders to shepherd the flock of God, he is, in essence, calling them to make sure that the sheep keep coming to him, to Christ, that they would never try to find a different way, a different kind of happiness, because it is only a path of destruction; God is the only path to life. Shepherds are called to lead the flock to where they can meet with Jesus and find joy in him, to feed the flock the very words of Christ so that their souls will be nourished and built up into maturity in him, held fast in their faith. Negatively, shepherds are called to keep watch over the flock that they would not wander into sinful paths, into false teaching that would destroy their souls. This is where church discipline comes into play. Ultimately, the purpose and goal of the shepherd’s ministry is the same as Christ’s, to help the flock find and hold fast to eternal life in Christ in the face of many trials and temptations. But there is a problem. There is a reason Peter needs to exhort the elders. Notice Peter’s words starting in the second half of verse 2 through 3, where Peter warns against three common temptations shepherds face. vv. 2-4 Leading under compulsion Leading for shameful gain Leading in a domineering way I want to give some examples that highlight these dangers that I think apply to Peter’s warning. Leading under compulsion: “Do I really have to deal with that person again?” “Ugh…I have to preach again this Sunday. They don’t even listen to me.” “How can I minister to those who slander me?” “How can I care for those who take advantage of my family’s time?” “I just need to get through this Sunday” This would include dreading your work, despising it, having a serious dislike for the people etc. Sheep who experience this see a leader who often fails to lead, who is cold and perhaps bitter or reclusive. There’s a lack of joy. But Peter says, don’t lead this way, but lead “willingly, as God would have you.” Leading for shameful gain: “How do they expect me to care for them well when they barely pay me enough to scrape by” “Well… It is a good paying job” “This role really boosts my position in society” “This will be a great launching pad to what I really want to do” This would include greedy, sleezy, deceitful, and haughty behavior. Sheep who experience this often may learn of a moral failure from their pastor, or may just get the sense that their shepherd cares more about his appearance and status before men than he does the holiness of the people. Peter says, don’t lead this way, but eagerly. Leading in a domineering way “They won’t do it my way…Then find someone else” “It’s my way or the highway” “It’s my pulpit” “It’s my church” “I’m the elder” “I’m the lead Pastor, who does that other leader think they are?” This would include intimidating, manipulating, bullying behavior. Sheep who experience this often come away from time with the Shepherd with their tails between their legs, feeling disrespected and about two feet tall. Peter says, don’t lead this way, but instead lead by example. There are a number of things that lead Shepherds to act in these sorts of ways, but I believe the core issue that applies to every flawed pastor is when their own hearts are not moved by the love and mercy of God towards themselves or towards the flock whom they are called to care for. This leads to a cold heart that overlooks the gravity of the role they’ve been given. They’ve forgotten just how much mercy has been shown to them. Maybe you’ve experienced some of these nasty sinful behaviors from your pastors in the past or perhaps presently at All peoples Church. I’m so sorry. I’m so sorry if you’ve been hurt directly or indirectly by us. Further, I’m truly sorry that we who have been called to be an example of Christ’s loving care to you so often fail you in our sinfulness. But what I need you to know is that Jesus never serves you out of compulsion. He didn’t come out of compulsion, forgive you out of compulsion, die out of compulsion, or give you his Spirit out of compulsion, but willingly, joyfully, eagerly. He walked among us and entered into mine and your sinful stink because he loved us. It wasn’t for selfish gain, nor was it domineering, but rather he has always been patient, going the extra mile even when we have resisted him. It is only when Shepherds see this picture of Christ that we will be moved to willingly, joyfully, eagerly serve the flock of God. We must be led by his example of leadership and we must ourselves be following Jesus as sheep if we are going to be faithful examples to others. Peter gives these warnings because he himself knows that only Jesus is sinless in his leadership. But he also offers hope in verse 4 to shepherds who fight to serve faithfully. 4 And when the chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown of glory. Friends, ministry is hard because people are hard and sinful. Even when one has pure motives to serve the flock of God, the challenges of life and ministry along with the sinful responses of those we serve can tempt shepherds to sinful and dangerous behavior. But Peter here reminds the elders who suffer in their role, that Jesus, the chief Shepherd will again appear. It’s not a matter of if, but when! And when he appears, Peter says, those who have endured faithfully in their labor will receive glory and honor that is unfading, even as Christ himself was exalted to glory. These words give me so much hope. Now, we’ve answered the questions “who are shepherds?” and “what do they do”. But we need to cover another very important question, “how should the church relate to shepherds?” What do you do with Ross, Sam, and I? YOU Read verse 5 with me vv. 5-7 5 Likewise, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” How are sheep to respond to the shepherds? Sheep are called to “be subject” to the shepherds. This is a loaded word and topic all together, so it’s important that we define this term. Secondly, we need to answer who the “younger” refers to. Who exactly must be subject to the elders? Define: ὑποτάσσω: “to submit to the orders or directives of someone—‘to obey, to submit to, obedience, submission.’”[1] This word is describing a relationship with ordered roles. Peter uses this same term to describe the relationship of servants to their masters, citizens to their ruler, wives to their husbands, and even the church to Christ. See why I say this is a loaded term? Our culture hates the idea that anyone could lead you with this sort of authority. This topic is actually at the core of most philosophical, political, economic, and even racial debates. But it’s not only our culture who baulks at authority. So do I. This is true from birth! My little two-month-old hates to be denied his desires. Anyone with kids knows what I’m talking about, right? I understand why so many baulk at this idea of authority. There have been a lot of bad leaders throughout history. We’d rather be responsible for our own failures than have someone else responsible for them, right? I get it! Even so, Church, this is a command of God who created the earth, including the order of all things in it. And I need you to see the beauty in this God-given command. Friend, when Peter calls you to welcome the elder’s leadership in your life, he’s not saying that they will always lead you perfectly – that’s clear from the previous warnings – but that God ultimately has your good in mind. This is not a malevolent ploy of religious leaders to gain as much power of humans as possible, but the effort of a tender-hearted God who is concerned for the well-being of his sheep. Listen to Jesus’s response to what he saw as he ministered throughout Israel: “When Jesus saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd”(Mt 9:36). Don’t you see the compassion of God? This is just before Jesus called the disciples to pray for more laborers for the harvest. There weren’t enough leaders to help these harassed sheep! Friends, whether you have a good reason to fear submitting to another’s leadership or not today, I need you to understand God’s good purpose in it. He is for you. He wants abundant life for you. And if Christ is the example shepherds are called to follow, than you can trust that even in submitting to your elders, God has good in mind for you. Listen also to Heb. 13:17, which captures this same point: 17 Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they are keeping watch over your souls, as those who will have to give an account. Let them do this with joy and not with groaning, for that would be of no advantage to you. Peter and the author of Hebrews believe that you will benefit and thrive more by joyfully receiving our care for you than you will having a resistant attitude or heart. Hebrews also touches on our second question, who must be subject to the elders? Hebrews clearly directs the entire church to obey and submit to their leaders, but who are “the younger” Peter is talking about in verse 5? Bible scholars agree, Peter is not singling out young people here. He is using words skillfully, contrasting the two groups of people in the entire community, “elders” and “younger”. Even as the elders were relatively older than most in the community, even if just in maturity, the rest of the community were for the most part younger in age and also those urged to submit to the other group, the elders. I believe Peter may also be offering a warning to the church, even as he has been offering warnings to the elders. It is the temptation especially of the young, both in age and maturity to rebel against authority. Peter is challenging the church not to be like rebellious teenagers, or two month old’s… Everyone is called to submit to the oversight of their elders, even when they don’t like what they are doing. I’ll touch more on this in a moment. Peter follows this charge with these important words, “clothe yourselves” in humility. In fact, all of you must clothe yourselves in humility – sheep towards other sheep, sheep towards shepherd, and shepherd towards sheep. You’ve got to wear humility like a garment. Notice, this is not a passive activity, but one that requires personal action from every one of us – you must clothe yourselves. Humility doesn’t come naturally. It must be practiced continually, even as you dress yourself daily. Especially in the Christian community, Peter says, it must be practiced if a community is going to thrive. Pride, on the other hand, is at the center of strife in all our relationships, with one another, with sheep and shepherd, even with God. This is why Peter quotes this somber warning from the Proverbs: “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” Peter’s burden is about more than submission to shepherds. It’s about our submission to God. Sheep and shepherd relationships, and all relationships for that matter, tell us something about our relationship with God. Verses 6 and 7 makes this clear: 6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, 7 casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you. Don’t you see? God is saying that when you humble yourself, even before imperfect shepherds, humbly following them, you are ultimately humbling yourself before God. In the same way, when we reject the care of those whom God has placed over us, whether their correction or counsel or teaching, we are actually proudly opposing God. Friends, your pastors are not ultimate, but God is. And we don’t want God as our enemy. The same is true for Shepherds. When we lay down our lives for sometimes ungrateful and stubborn sheep, we are humbling ourselves before God. But when we take matters into our own hands and try to proudly control those same people in the ways mentioned above, we are ultimately squaring up with God. We oppose him. Some of you are anxious over our leadership, our teaching, or other things. Perhaps you have been hurt by us or others. Yet you continue to submit to us lovingly and humbly. You pray for us. You show up and serve. You don’t slander us or complain, but you cast your cares on God. First of all, thank you. Thank you. If this is true of you, we would encourage you to come to us with your honest challenges and questions. (This is why we have a pastoral covenant that we make to you in order that you might hold us accountable to God’s call on us – I hope each of you got a copy.) Casting your cares on God doesn’t negate the call to keep your elders accountable. There’s a time for challenging others, leaving a church, defying a government, even for leaving a marriage. But I think we are far too quick to do so, and often far too worldly in our approach. Taking matters into your own hands, some of you have resorted to gossip and slander, defiance, and some have simply left without saying anything. Some have caused division, even hindering the mission of God. Peter says, humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God. God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble. Humility, friends, is the key to enduring challenging ministry situations or challenging sinful leadership. And humility works itself out in trust. First, it trusts that God will exalt you at the proper time (v. 6). Humility believes that God has your good in mind even if you feel like your leaders don’t see you or know your potential or agree with your perspective. Secondly, humility “casts all your anxieties on God”, trusting that God cares for you. Right now. In this moment. In that challenging situation you are walking through. God cares for you. He will vindicate you in his time. Humility in relationships looks like us laying aside our proud natural instinct to try to control others and the outcome of situations and instead trusting God to ultimately bring about the change we want to see in another. Yes, we should confront sin. Yes, we should challenge what we think may be poor leadership, but we should do so with a heart submitted to God, which has first prayed for the person or situation and served diligently while trusting that God knows and cares. In chapter 2, Peter reminds us that Christ did the same for us: 21 To this you were called, because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps. 22 “He committed no sin, and no deceit was found in his mouth.”[a] 23 When they hurled their insults at him, he did not retaliate; when he suffered, he made no threats. Instead, he entrusted himself to him who judges justly. Are you following in Christ’s steps in the way you suffer in his church? When we humble ourselves before God and others, we are following in Christ’s footsteps. You are suffering with him. And those who suffer with him like this are promised also be raised with him. WE Suffering is sure to come as Christian, and sadly, often in the family of God. But God has given us instruction knowing the challenges we would face and he has kindly given us hope for a future without suffering in his glory. Church, this hope-filled response to suffering is what sets us apart from the world. It is often a greater witness to the world than our words. What if it began in the church with one another? In how we relate to sheep and shepherd and to one another, we must live as Christ lived and follow his example. We long for the promised day together, humbling ourselves to God, trusting that he cares for us, both now and for eternity. Let’s Pray Benediction: 10 And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you. 11 To him be the dominion forever and ever. Amen. [1] Louw, J. P., & Nida, E. A. (1996). Greek-English lexicon of the New Testament: based on semantic domains(electronic ed. of the 2nd edition., Vol. 1, p. 467). Favorite Success Quotes “How you do anything is how you do everything” “Circumstances do not change responsibility” Key Points 1. Your Responsibilities Aren’t Affected by Your Circumstances The vast majority of modern men have been castrated by a societal conditioning that tells them it’s “ok” to shirk their responsibilities. Men who allow the whims of their emotions and their day to day circumstances to dictate their actions and responses. We see men who allow the whims of their emotions and their day to day circumstances to dictate their actions and responses. Fathers who ignore their duties to their children, husbands who shrug off their responsibilities to their wives, and workers who simply aren’t willing to put in the work necessary to keep their clients happy. And as a result, our society has been left scratching its head in confusion wondering “Where have all the real men gone”? The real men are still out there… They are just harder to find. They are the men who do not allow their feelings and problems to interfere with their duties. The men who provide for their families, prioritize their relationships and take care of their bodies. The men who are willing to say no to luxuries and parties now so that they can have an incredible quality of life for their family later. Are you one of those men? 2. Resourcefulness is the Ultimate Resource Markets crash, businesses crumble, people die, and life happens. So what? The greatest breakthroughs of human history have often come in times where resources were slim and things were looking grim. But a handful of (now) iconic individuals were willing to look at the circumstances and negative situation and see it for what it was… An opportunity. You see, if you are resourceful enough, no circumstance or turmoil will prevent you from success. You can always find a way to make money and create a life of happiness and freedom for yourself. You must simply learn to look for it. Resourcefulness is your greatest resource in the tumultuous and unpredictable world that we live in. If you can learn to cultivate this trait in yourself and others, you will find a way to be successful. No matter what. 3. Despite What You’ve Been Told, Work-Life Balance Is Crucial With the proliferation of the “Hustlers” mentality and the idea that grinding it out 24/7 365 is the only way to success, many of you are operating under the misguided belief that work-life balance is b.s. Well… It’s not. Bedros found this out first hand when, after several consecutive months of high-stress projects, he snapped and suffered from multiple anxiety attacks (initially mistaking them for heart attacks). These episodes scared Bedros into making a change and, after kicking and clawing his way through the transition, he began to ease himself out of business scenarios that he found stressful. He cut back on his time in the office, started prioritizing his health and family again, and learned to delegate and outsource like crazy. And now… He’s healthier, wealthier, and happier than ever before. Hustling your way to the top is great. Grinding and working hard are great. But they must be tempered by taking a step back and making time for yourself and your family. 4. The Quickest Way to Overcome Adversity is to Reframe It Life can suck. Things happen and circumstances outside of your control can knock you on your ass. But the quickest way to overcome any adversity is to reframe it. Learn to see challenges as opportunities. Learn to see setbacks as an opportunity to grow. Learn to see failure as education. The more that you can reframe the difficult things in life, the easier they will become. This will not make your problems go away… But it will make them easier to deal with. 5. All Success is Preceded by Risk If you want real success, you are going to have to take real risks. End of story. For the majority of A+ players, every big breakthrough, achievement, and milestone were preceded by even bigger risks. For some people this meant a breakup, for others, taking out a line of credit to fund a business, and for others still, it was dropping out of college and pursuing their dreams of their own volition, without the help of mom and dad. For Bedros, risk has come in many forms, from turning down six-figure job offers to taking out tens of thousands of dollars in credit, to leveraging his house, to purchasing a $4 million office space. But all of these risks ended paid off in the long run. And while you are on your own unique path to success, you must remember that you will be required to take risks and make sacrifices that are uncomfortable. But when you do… You will have no choice but success. And that’s where the real magic happens.

We focus on our community of Customer Education professionals. All of us are learning and growing from the experiences we have helping learners understand our products, particularly for Software-as-a-Services companies where that product is - quite literally - changing under our feet. If you have a question, email us at learn@customer.education! Gordon Mak “Do you have any tips to enable IDs and Content Developers to be self-sufficient in refreshing content in the LMS without being dependent on the LMS admin or take LMS admin training? I ask this because Covid-19 has forced many companies to leverage cloud storage services, and to store their course content like SCORM and video files in the cloud. Wouldn’t it be nice if updated course content files didn’t need to be re-uploaded into the LMS manually? I would love to hear if anyone has found a reliable solution.” Many customer Learning Management Systems now provide roles that aren't the equivalent of a full Administrator, but rather focused on content management. For example, you can assign certain courses to individuals and allow them to upload/modify their own content, but an Administrator still needs to publish. If you’re using a separate cloud-based CMS for video (like Wistia) or SCORM (like Articulate’s cloud products), it’s possible that the way some Learning Management Systems embed content, you could swap out the core assets in their respective systems without touching the LMS. Unfortunately, we haven’t seen super elegant solutions for this kind of problem. We would point out that when we bring up “Admin Training” that triggers a bit of concern. Most well-designed LMS products are simple to pick up. At most, you can do some social learning with peers - such as an internal doc that explains your process. But then again, do you want many people mucking about in your system? The more people you introduce, the more potential there is for someone to make an error. Keith Perhac is the Founder of SegMetrics, a once-upon-a-time marketing agency that pivoted from marketing services to a suite of analytical and reporting products. Today SegMetrics builds and refines digital testing and tracking tools that provide marketers with critical information on where “leads come from, how they act, and how much a marketing program is really worth.” In this interview, Keith explains that KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) tell a company if it is doing something better or worse than at some time in the past. However, KPIs are about averages – they do not explain what is wrong or right – or what action to take next. Keith says it is important to look at the outliers, follow your leads through their entire customer journey, and dig beyond top-level KPIs to get a deeper understanding of the contribution different components make to a KPI. Before SegMetrics, Keith worked as a developer at a marketing/development agency in the middle of nowhere Japan. Fed up with long hours, Keith decided to quit to do “something on his own.” He started freelancing, “building awesome software” for great marketers, including Ramit Sethi, author of I Will Teach You to Be Rich. Keith claims Ramit taught him most of what he knows about marketing. Back then, agencies built their own metrics and testing tools. Ramit's focus on data, customer experience, and the customer journey brought a new dimension to Keith's understanding of marketing: He had to go back to his college psychology lessons on “how people think.” How could a company measure every touchpoint, every experience? How could it split-test design or copy position? What could it do to test whether people were converting? Keith's agency focused on expediting client launches and optimizing their marketing funnels. Keith says that, often, the biggest value the agency provided was in pointing out customer journey disconnects, fragmentation, and “holes” in funnels. The launches were exciting . . . the retainers not so much. Still, the agency expanded to twelve employees in four countries. During a two-week period of client-free downtime, Keith's team built the software that is the foundation of SegMetrics today. A month-and-a-half later, the product launched. Keith intended to transform the agency to a product-oriented company over time and as the product increased in popularity. Didn't happen. The product did not “take off” until three years later, when they started a SegMetrics marketing campaign . . . and shut down the agency. Skillsets, tools, the business model, and staffing needs changed overnight. Today, SegMetrics provides done-for-you services, facilitates client agency onboarding, and offers a lot of customer support for its software. The biggest challenge is educating agencies that “think they already know what they know.” Keith is believes that setting up solid tracking and UTM implementation is critical for understanding where to best spend marketing dollars. An Urchin Tracking Module (UTM) is simple URL-linked code that generates Google Analytics.) Keith discusses the impact of Covid-19 on various business segments . . . and highlights the surprising number and kinds of businesses that are seeing tremendous business growth. While brick-and-mortar companies have suffered, Keith has seen increased traffic for companies providing entertainment, digital media, telecommunications, online information products, and Masterclasses. SegMetrics is releasing its first printed book this May: The 90-Minute Guide to Building Marketing Funnels That Convert. The book will be available on Amazon. Keith can be contacted throughs his company's website at: segmetrics.io and on Twitter (Keith Perhac). Transcript Follows: ROB: Welcome to the Marketing Agency Leadership Podcast. I am your host, Rob Kischuk, and I am joined today by Keith Perhac. He is the Founder of Segmetrics, based in Portland, Oregon. Welcome to the podcast, Keith. KEITH: Thanks so much for having me. ROB: It's excellent to have you here. Keith, why don't you tell us a little bit about your own journey and how that landed you into Segmetrics? KEITH: It was a long journey, as I think many listeners' journeys were. I started out working as a salaryman in middle-of-nowhere, Japan as a marketer. Or not as a marketer, as kind of a developer and working at a standard marketing/development agency. That continued on for a while. The company got acquired; I decided I don't like working until 2 a.m. every night, and I'd prefer to do something on my own. I ended up leaving that and started out freelancing and doing work for a couple of marketers that were not very well-known at the time. Ramit Sethi of I Will Teach You to Be Rich and a couple of other people. It grew and ballooned from there. It was interesting, because my journey was not, “Oh, I'm going to go start an agency.” It was more falling into that agency. I started out as a freelancer and then I got too busy, and it's like, I've got to bring on a subcontractor, and then I've got to bring on another one, and then there's more clients who want to work with me, and okay, now I have five people working with me. Oh, now I need to start doing events, and now I have 12 people working for me in multiple countries. So, it just grew organically from “I just like building awesome software and working with great marketers” to “Now we have a team of 12 people over four countries and we're working with clients all over the globe.” That was a shift. [laughs] ROB: [laughs] That's quite a shift. Across the world, across industries. So many different shifts there. KEITH: Yeah. ROB: I would imagine going through that I Will Teach You to Be Rich phase – people may have heard of Ramit now. From a marketing perspective, were they numbers-driven? Is that part of your story? KEITH: Yeah, he's always been super numbers-driven. Honestly, working with him was probably the highlight of my career and probably where I learned the most stuff about marketing because it really was trial by fire. This was back in the day when there really wasn't a lot of marketing technology out there. We look at things like automated webinars now, or we look at things like proof, to have a little pop-up to say, “So-and-so just bought . . .” None of this existed back then. There were no metrics except what you could calculate yourself. Google Analytics was around, but it wasn't very good. Split testing tools – all of the stuff that we take for granted now, we had to build ourselves. Ramit's always been a marketer who has been very into the data and very into the experience that customers are having and that people are going through. So the whole idea of how we can measure every touchpoint, every experience that people have and then take that and do something with that, whether that's a split test on design, whether that's positioning for copy, whether that's a little pop-up that says “So-and-so just bought . . .,” what are the things that we can do to test and see if people are converting or not? This all sounds like standard hat now; it wasn't back then. And we were also in a compressed timeline where it's like, “Hey, we want to have this up by Wednesday and it's Tuesday evening.” [laughs] It really was a trial by fire. I had had some marketing background, mainly dev and design, and then suddenly I got thrown into this world of, “You have to understand the marketing, how people think.” I used a lot of my psychology background and stuff that I learned in college that I thought, “I'm never going to use this again,” and now that's front and center with how people react to pages, how people interact with sites and copy and design, and then being able to test and improve that. It's really crazy. It was just constant. I think we worked with him for 5 years. That sounds about right. But it was a small team. He had just launched the second version of his first product, and I think there were five of us. It was pretty amazing. ROB: That sounds like quite an adventure, and quite a journey for him, his brand, and probably you along the way. I think you have talked a lot about numbers, about KPIs, and things that people get right and people get wrong about KPIs. What are some of the goods and bads of KPIs? KEITH: There's a lot of cargo culting in marketing, for good and bad. I think that KPIs are something that have been pushed for so long that people, rightly so, are like, “KPIs are important. They're our key performance indicator. If we don't know these, then we're not going to be able to improve our marketing.” That's what I hear over and over, especially when we were doing the consulting with the agency, and especially now that we're a KPI-driven company. People are always like, “What KPIs do I need to look at to improve my marketing?” The answer is you don't, because KPIs are key performance indicators. They indicate whether the company is doing well or not, or whether a marketing funnel is doing well or not. It's a measure like your speedometer, or I guess the engine heat gauge on your car. If the number is going down or up, you know you're doing something wrong or right. But just looking at that number is not going to let you know what to do next. That's why we're really big into looking at outliers. When you look at a KPI, you're looking at an average. Let's say you have 200 people coming into a funnel. You have 100 people coming in from Google, you have 100 people coming in from Facebook. The 100 people from Google convert at 100%. Every single person purchases. No one purchases from Facebook. What's your KPI for your conversion rate? It's 50%. That's great. But that didn't tell you that you have one audience that's making all the money and one audience that's making none of it. So, you know what to do at that point. You either get rid of the Facebook ads or you figure out why they're not converting. Looking at that top level KPI – and this is what most people think of when they think of the KPIs – it doesn't let you know anything other than, is the business continuing to do better or worse than it was yesterday or last month? It doesn't tell you those outliers, which is what you actually need to look at if you're going to improve. ROB: That's interesting what you mentioned on outliers. Especially when you're talking about looking at traffic from Google, some traffic from Google you can do more quickly in terms of ads. Some traffic you can do more slowly, maybe, in search. And sometimes you don't know – without a proper indicator of search traffic, there may not be any more traffic for you to get. KEITH: Right. ROB: All of that is context, I think, for what makes a good number and what makes a good KPI. What are you seeing in terms of maybe some unexpected outliers? We are in this moment where many of us are sheltering at home. We are in the middle of this coronavirus outbreak and trying to take care of each other and other people in our world by staying home. What are some of the shifting outliers you've seen in this mode? KEITH: This has been super interesting because some of the things that I predicted would go down and fail have not, and some of the things that I thought would do great have not. Obviously, anything with a physical aspect to it has done poorly. Anything where you have to go do sales in person or you're running a brick-and-mortar shop, those places are really struggling right now. It's very difficult. We've had a number of clients in those spaces – we had some dog trainers that are not able to do their work anymore. We had some construction places that aren't able to do their work anymore. There's a lot of places like that. That was I think an assumption that everyone had. Entertainment, digital media has gone way up, which has been really interesting. I think everyone kind of assumed that as well. Netflix is killing it. Telecommunications, of course – Zoom, we've all heard what's going on there, but that's been crazy. There's all these new telecommunications companies coming out of the woodwork because working from home is the new normal. I think both of those, people knew that that was coming. The one that's been really interesting to me, though, is online info products, especially higher tier ones, because I expected that people have less money, they have less disposable income; they're not going to be dropping $300, $500, $1,000 on info products and learning products. And I was wrong. Across the board, we've seen most niches of info products actually increasing in sales. Masterminds are increasing. A lot of events that have gone virtual, those are all improving. Specific niches – like I have a friend who is in the jobs space, and that of course has gone down because no one's going to work. But most places for general online learning have been increasing, and it's been very interesting to see that. ROB: Very interesting. I'm getting bombarded with ads for ClassPass – not ClassPass, rather, but Masterclass. ClassPass is probably having a hard time with their gym passes. KEITH: Right. [laughs] ROB: Masterclass for sure. So, it's interesting to hear those trends. When we look a little bit at your journey, Keith, talk about the transition from agency world to product world a little bit more. Was that a gradual transition, and one day you just realized where you wanted to be? Or was there a very decisive moment where you threw a switch? KEITH: It's a little bit of both, to be honest. I'm kind of risk-averse, I guess I would say. We were probably 6 years into the agency at this point, and our whole thing was we help people with launches, we help people optimize their marketing funnels. So, we're dealing with clients who, when they do a launch, they do $5-12 million launches. We bust our butts, and it's really rough, and then we see the same retainer, the same pay rate for that client that we do for any other client. So, we help make a $10 million launch and then we're just sitting there at the same point. After doing a number of these, we got to the point where we were like, “We know all the parts of this; why can't we do this for ourselves?”, as I think many people do. We're a bunch of developers. We really like developing, and we had done the marketing, so we said, “Why don't we try to build our own software?” We had about two weeks of downtime where we knew we weren't going to have any client work, and we said, “We're going to sit down for two weeks and build this thing.” And we did. We launched it I think a month and a half later, because building it and launching it are two completely different things, and it was always something that we were going to continuously work on in order to improve, and eventually that was going to take over the revenue for the agency. We were going to slowly transition from agency work to working on Segmetrics as it became more popular. We jumped up, we had really good MRR [Monthly Recurring Revenue] in the first month, and then it just plateaued for the next 3 years. [laughs] We didn't really lose any MRR; we didn't really gain any MRR. It just kind of sat there, and occasionally we'd fix things, but there was no focus on it. This was the main problem that we had for many years, which was “We have this great piece of software that we're using internally for all our customers, but how do we focus on it?” Focusing on the software is easy because we're all developers. Focusing on the marketing is harder because marketing is not something that you can sit down for an hour or two hours and bang out. Marketing is an overall idea and understanding of your customers. There's customer research. There's a lot of that goes into it. What we were finding was we couldn't make the time to do it. ROB: I think many services firms have that challenge. It's sort of the “cobbler's children have no shoes” scenario. How do you look at turning that corner? What started to unlock for you? Because that's a problem even for any given agency, I think. KEITH: Yeah, definitely. Just look at most agency websites. They don't usually build them internally because they don't have the time or the energy, or it makes more sense to go work on client work. Back when I was a salaryman, we actually had a group of five agencies and we were all friends with each other, and we would build each other's websites. We'd hire each other to build the other one's website because we weren't going to do it ourselves. [laughs] So, we tried a number of things. If you know 37signals, who did Basecamp, they were an agency originally. They're probably the unicorn of that agency turning into a SaaS company. They did the Fridays. They said, “We don't do any client work on Fridays, and we're only going to work on our own stuff.” We tried that; that didn't really work. We tried “After 3:00, we're not going to work on client stuff.” That didn't work. We tried a lot of different things, and we never really were able to get any traction on any of them. I think that a lot of it was just mental, because it's things like – let's take the Friday for example. We worked really hard on clients Monday through Thursday; now we're going to work on our own stuff, and we're just exhausted from 4 days of working on client stuff. And then we also need to reset and say, “Where were we last Friday when we left off?” So, there's this huge gap of what we did then, what the priorities are, if the priorities have shifted. Half the day is then essentially wasted getting back up to speed on what we were doing last week. We had the same problem with doing afternoons. After 3:00, we would work on our own stuff, or after 2:00 or whenever we decided to make that break, and the issue was for the entire morning, we're focused on a very input-output type of work style. Client says, “I need these six things,” we produce those six things, we know the agency has made six things' worth of money. It's a very transactional idea. Being able to translate from that into “Okay, now we need a marketing campaign. When are we doing this marketing campaign?” “I don't know, we need to figure it out” – going from this transactional to this creative side of things was very difficult for everyone. Those were really the two main challenges we had. How do you shift from a transactional mindset with the agency and with client work to an almost blue-sky, “We don't know what the answer is here”? usually when we're working with clients, they have a strong readership, they have a strong brand. They've gotten to a certain point where we are iterating on a foundation that they've made. But we're now having to build that foundation from scratch. Starting over from that and not knowing where to go, and to have to spend that time to do it, was very difficult, making that mental shift every day or every week. ROB: You knew yourself as a customer. You knew what you needed. You built technology to do what you needed. But it seems like there was probably a stage of getting to know your own customer better, which we all need to do. How did you take the steps to get to know that customer well enough to speak their language and really market well to them? KEITH: Lots of customer calls is honestly the only way. We talked with our agency friends, got on calls with them. Made it very obvious that they weren't sales calls, but essentially saying, “Hey, I want to show you this. What is the value for you?” We knew what the value for us was. We knew what the values for our customers was as an agency. But one thing we've learned is that every single marketer is different, and every single marketer wants different things, and they all have it set up differently. Honestly, that's the most painful thing out of all of it. We take something simple like recurring payments – there's 101 ways to set up recurring payments for a product. Maybe it's an invoice that gets an extra payment on it. Maybe it's multiple invoices. Maybe it's not even called an invoice, but a recurring – there's just so many things that come in, and everyone has set them up differently, even within similar systems. This was the first time where we realized, oh crap, everyone's doing something different; we need to figure out how to support everyone in a single bucket. So yeah, it was just talking with a lot of agencies. A lot of the things we ran into with the agencies were not actually technical at all. They were more like, “This is great. I really want to start using this. We don't have the time to set this up. We just signed up for someone else who does something similar, and it's been sitting there for 3 months because no one has the time to do anything with it.” ROB: Even with one of the simple things that you were involved in with Segmetrics, when I see lead tracking – we actually had an experiment we did with some agencies that we know involving simple things: how do you get very regimented about your UTM tracking, and how do you do this right? Can you get involved in publishing content and ads and whatnot so that it's easier to close the loop on a transaction? Everybody does it differently. Some people say “That's not important to me”; some people say “That's confusing.” And yet I know myself, coming from an engineering background, there's a part of me that screams out and says, “Don't you see? This is a really good way to do things.” [laughs] One thing I notice when I look at your product platform and some of the things that it does – and we don't talk a lot about products on this podcast, but I think it's worth reflecting on, especially from your background. I see this different DNA of how to efficiently run an agency well. You want to know when someone's not paying you. You know that talking to a client every week, giving them feedback on what you've done for them every week, can be a good practice to do that a lot of people don't get around to. How do you strike that balance of the stuff you feel like you strongly know somebody should do and whether or not they're ready to do it? I think we all have those things we feel like we ought to do. We ought to eat our vegetables, but we're not ready to, business-wise or at dinner. KEITH: It's rough. You know the old saying: you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink. There's a number of things that we want people to do. There's a number of things that we want people to think of when they're doing analytics. The only thing we can do is really educate them. We produce a lot of content about teaching people how to market. We have onboarding calls and we have hand-holding, done-for-you services and stuff. But the education side, especially when you're targeting agencies, is tough because they think they already know what they know. That's one of the biggest issues I think we have, which is we want to teach people that you should really use UTM values, and they're like, “We haven't used them up until now and we've been doing fine.” I'm like, “Well…” It's funny because I think the biggest hurdle we have is getting people's tracking set up correctly – installing the snippet, making sure those ad IDs and those UTMs are installed. We have a number of customers who are more technical, and they have literally perfect analytics. 100% attribution of every single click, and it is beautiful. I love it. And then I work with some people and I'm like, “None of your ads are set up correctly.” They're like, “Oh, we threw it over to the ad guy and he never set it up.” It's just so frustrating; it's been like 3 weeks, and why have they not added this ad snippet in? It's just very frustrating that because I'm technical and I understand the technology of how the web and marketing on the web works, I consider it a foregone conclusion that these are the things you need to do to set up. What I'm realizing is that a lot of marketers do not understand how the internet works and how marketing on the internet works. I think this is a difference of marketing now versus marketing 10 years ago, when you had to build everything yourself. Most people just see, “I have this landing page builder, I slap in this iframe, and then I'm good to go,” because from their perspective, it works. But that's not actually how anything is working, and there's a lot of magic going on in the background that they can't see and they don't understand as to how it's actually working. As long as it's working for them, they're like, “Everything's good.” But then something breaks and they have no idea why. We had one customer we were looking at and they weren't getting – and this is amazing, I think, with the software. This is also what we found when we did the agency stuff. The biggest value we provided to new customers was telling them where the holes were in their funnel. And sometimes these holes were not like, “Not many people are clicking on this.” It was “This campaign is not hooked up to anything” or “Your webinar is not sending in any leads to your marketing, so you have 5,000 leads that have never gotten an email from you.” We find this all the time, and it's so frustrating. It's so frustrating, both for them and for us. ROB: You've dialed in with being able to lead a horse to water. The follow-on from that we don't think about as much is really that you learn this often in relationships. You can't change people for the most part, but you can be there and help them and be helpful to them when they make a decision to change. It seems like that's a lot of times what marketing around this kind of product can be. I think there's an interesting thread I want to pull on here. You mentioned your own agency making a transition into a product and 37signals making a transition into a product. What do you think it is, perhaps – and maybe you've seen some other examples – that is in the DNA of an agency that makes it possible for them to make a jump into product? I think a lot of agency owners want to, and even spend a little bit of their engineering bench time to build something, but there is a wide chasm to cross past that. What do you think makes it work? KEITH: I don't know exactly, and that's because I don't think that we were able to make it work while we were an agency. But I think that you can't look at the product as a side hustle. It has to be part – we did not really start growing Segmetrics until we decided, “Hey, we're shutting down the agency. We're going to start moving everyone off and we're going to focus on this full-time.” It wasn't like we fired all the clients that day, but we made a very distinct decision that “We are not focusing on getting new clients. As client contracts are over, we're not going to renew them and we're just going to keep going down this path of software because that's where we want to go as the agency.” It has to be buy-in from everyone. We had some people who either did not or could not make that transition mentally, or didn't want to, and that's fine. But if we were to keep those people on and we were to keep going half-kilter at it, we were never going to succeed, because we had done the half-kilter thing for 3 years and it just doesn't grow like that. You have to be all-in. Or at least have that all-in as the final goal. ROB: Were there some roles that were more or less receptive to the transition than others? KEITH: Yes. I think there were some roles, but also just some people because of the way that – we were talking about that transactional idea where a client says “Do this,” you work for an hour, you complete that, the client is happy, and you know that you made the agency 1 hour's worth of money. With software, it's completely different. You could work for 8 hours and not produce anything because it was the wrong thing, or even if you did something awesome and everyone's happy, it doesn't actually result in any money. That was a very hard mental thing that was not role-specific, but a mental thing that needed to be addressed. One of the harder ones was account managers, because as an agency, you have to have an account manager, and only now are we starting to go back into account managers in Segmetrics because we just didn't need them. We needed support people, but that's very different than an account manager. We couldn't afford to have an account manager for every single customer that we had, especially when a customer is paying you $100-200 instead of $5,000 a month. It doesn't make sense at that scale. It was interesting, because I thought support was going to be very similar to account management, and it is not. It's a very different skillset. You need very different tools, and getting a new support person, getting support to work with Segmetrics was very difficult just because it was so different than anything we had done before. ROB: As you were talking about the account size required to support an account manager, it made me think of another example of what we're talking about here of an agency transitioning into a tech company, which was MailChimp. MailChimp started off as a web design shop and now is this huge, massive email marketing platform with hundreds and hundreds of people onboard. When you're charging $20 bucks a month for email marketing, you can't put an account manager on that. You can hardly spend an hour on them. But you can scale support. Support is a process of scale, I would argue, largely of consistency, of knowing when something needs to be escalated and when it doesn't, where the answers are, and how to help people find the answers. That may be overly simple. You probably have a better pulse on it than I do here. How would you distinguish it? KEITH: I think that's exactly right. It's very different than an account manager, where it's not about necessarily solving the issue directly, where support is, but more of that overall keeping in touch and relationship with them. It's more of an emotional thing than support is. ROB: Keith, what is coming up for Segmetrics and perhaps for broader marketing that you're excited about? We all need some things to be excited about in these moments, and I think many of us are finding them. What's exciting you? KEITH: Going outside at some point. [laughs] Being over quarantine would be great. Man, that's a hard question because there's so many things that I want to do and that we're working on that excite me. One personal thing that I'm excited about with Segmetrics is that we're actually releasing our first paper book in May, and I just got the proof for it yesterday, so I'm pretty excited about that. It's something that we've been working on for – even from the agency days, I had originally done a video course that never got produced, and we decided, “Hey, this is some great content. We really need to put this together into a book.” So, I've been writing that for a while. Really happy about that. Overall, with Segmetrics, I don't know. I don't know what I'm excited about next. The long, slow SaaS ramp of death I think is what they call it, and I think we're right in the middle of that right now. I have a list of features and new things and new ideas that we're super excited about, but it's just doing them. It's out of that exciting, blue sky phase and more into the “Okay, time to put our pedal to the metal and actually get this stuff done.” One thing that we did that I'm happy about is – I think I mentioned that we're bringing some account managers back, and what we decided to do is start working with agencies and companies that are signing up and providing them an account manager and getting them set up and having someone come in and configure all their campaigns and do all that. That's something I'm excited about that's hopefully going to be kicking off at the end of this month. ROB: Excellent. And where do we find your book when your book is available? KEITH: The book will be on Amazon. We're probably also going to have it on the site, but it's going to be on Amazon. It's called The 90-Minute Guide to Building Marketing Funnels That Convert. ROB: Excellent. That sounds very practical and like something we all need to think about. KEITH: I read a lot of marketing books. I read a lot of business books, and I always hate that they're really fluffy. They're also only half the size they need to be. I was talking to a friend about this who's a writer, an author in the industry, and I said I was reading Ryan Holiday's book – I'm trying to remember what the name of it was – and I'm like, “It was great up until the halfway point and then he started repeating the same stories. It was like he was rehashing the first half of the book.” He's like, “Well yeah, a book has to be 175 pages. It cannot be shorter than that. If you only have enough content for half, the publisher will say, ‘Write a second half that's just rehashing it.'” I hate that. ROB: Was this The Obstacle Is the Way or one of those? KEITH: No, I think it was his first main one that he did. I can't for the life of me remember which one it is. But I've always hated that, and I've always hated the extra – I like the stories because you have to get emotionally involved and you have to have a connection with the reader, but at the same time, at some point I just want to know “these are the six things you need to do, these are why they work, and here's my experience with them.” So that's what I've really tried to do with this book, is really put it down into “here's the theory, here's the reasons, here's what you need to do.” Hopefully it'll do that. ROB: Keith, when people want to find you and Segmetrics, where should they go to track you down? KEITH: Segmetrics is segmetrics.io. We're also on Twitter. I am Keith Perhac, also on Twitter. I am literally the only Keith Perhac in the world that I know of, so it's very easy to find me. And if you search far enough on Google, you will find things that I am still trying to bury 20 years later. [laughs] ROB: [laughs] We won't put those in the show notes. KEITH: Good, good. That's the problem with having a very unique name. You can never escape Google. ROB: Understood. Keith, thank you for coming on the podcast. KEITH: Thank you so much for having me. ROB: All the best for you and your team. Be well. KEITH: Definitely. ROB: Thank you for listening. The Marketing Agency Leadership Podcast is presented by Converge. Well… It’s May and we’re still at home. If you do work, you must wear a mask. I think we successfully flattened the curve, but remember, the area under the curve hasn’t changed. I hope we’re not planning on doing this until a vaccine is found. I don’t think the people will put up with … Continue reading "LN-QRM 237: Are We Done Yet?"
A fatal accident at a remote survivalist training camp sends participants into a panic - and sets the stage for a chilling showdown. Sounds good don’t it. Or does it. Well It starts off like a bunch of regular anarchist learning to survive out in the wilderness until some real f’ed up stuff happens and the main protagonist freakin dies. So how does this end? Its in French so the intensity of watching this closer is recommended. A Canadian movie as well

Off the top of your head… Can you guess what the most successful drug of ALL TIME has been? I'll give you a hint… It's fake. Well… It's not actually fake in of itself. It's just fake as a ‘drug'. If you guessed, Placebo, congratulations! … You already know what this episode is all about now. The relationship between the Law of Attraction and Health is perhaps the most readily accepted application of The Secret that you'll find, but it is also one of the most difficult to understand in the world that we live in. Just look at the Placebo Effect and you'll see what I mean. In this episode we discuss: How everything is frequency, including sickness and disease How your heart and mind CREATE frequencies The reality of trapped emotions and their effect on the body How your beliefs attract external sources of sickness Stress is the ultimate disease --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/new-age-christianity/support

Joe budden pump it up was originally about Masturbation? Royce da 5’9 “the allegory”album review. Geechi gotti 30 twork? Bhad bhabie have a seat, you doing the most. Arsonal disrespect T Top babymother. Drake drop two new songs over the weekend. Whitney Houston hologram tour. Waka flocka calls himself a “Wack rapper.” remember when Gucci mane caught a body? Well It’s a reason why they used to call him the boogeyman. Chuck D kicks flavor flav from public enemy. Tay roc gets expose by a tranny. Mike Tyson gets emotional and says he feels “empty” without boxing. Spike Lee talks about his Incident at Madison square garden and Royce Da 5’9 is becoming more Conscious.
It’s what you want to do. Directing actors, composing shots, editing sequences- THATS HOME. But it’s difficult. If it wasn’t everyone would be making films. But aren’t they? This persons busy, has the fancy new camera., is getting paid to travel around the world. Why can’t that be me? Well It’s because you’re wasting your fucking time. Why was productivity easier when I was younger? It’s because they hadn’t broke your fucking spirit yet. When you’re young you just move. You’re hungry. You’re a shark You have something to prove. You have something to say. What do you have to say now? Start with an idea. You write it down. A funny scene. A thoughtful character. A theme you can get behind. You need to get inspired, you need momentum. Just get out of your head. Write the thing. Cast the thing. Table read. Film the thing, it’s a marathon not a sprint, actually it’s a sprint fuck it. Whatever get the shot! Okay. I made a movie. Now what? Where does it go? Film festivals? Been there done that. Twitch? Amazon Prime? All this just for a blu ray? Why did I want to make this in the first place? Who was my audience? It’ll never be as important to them as it was to you. So what’s it all mean? What’s the point? The melancholy is setting in. You should have hugged everybody the night you wrapped. It’s over now. In those moments we were living the dream. I had it. I lost it. What’s next? You could be making a films. It’s what you want to do. Links To My Everything: linktr.ee/knivesmonroe Apple Podcasts: podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast... Spotify: open.spotify.com/show/0PPHuIv... Personal Training… The dream job. Choose your own hours. Be your own boss. Do the work you love, and earns *hundreds* per hour… Well It was over 13 years ago now when I first became a personal trainer… and it was 2014 when I QUIT being a personal trainer. the truth is it was a life of… 4:30am wake ups, so I can be ready for my 6:00am client 6 days a week. Client cancellations and the typical morning and evening busy times, meant I had huge gaps of wasted time each day. Grabbing my tupperware and eating my meal as fast as possible in the locker room in-between clients. Now, If you’re an experienced PT and coach, you know what I’m talking about. You may even be feeling the frustration right now… As there’s GOOD news and BAD news. From the outside looking in… I was a *successful* personal trainer (and this is the bad news). I had a full book of clients. I had a team of trainers working for me. I was charging a premium rate. And it all broke down when I asked myself… “How much longer do I want to keep doing this?” The answer was a dead simple: “I can’t keep this up. I want out of it NOW”. I was a new dad. And the thought of me trying to provide for my wife and kids long term whilst being a personal trainer, made no sense to me. This is the LIE that I call the “The OLD PT Model”. Because you get stuck in the time-for-money trap… Which means you have a ceiling that stops you from earning more money, helping more people and living with more freedom. The old, outdated methods that are wasting your time and hard earned money do not work any more. The game has changed, and this time it’s a big one. Well, here’s the GOOD news… You can easily switch to the NEW PT Model. We go behind the scenes and showcase the trainers and coaches around the world that are building successful fitness businesses. And NO - this isn’t about websites, fancy funnels, the latest app, or big social media followings. This is about what actually works right now, so you can earn more money, help more people and life with more freedom It’s time for a change. And this is where you can either get left behind, or you can make the shift to create a business and life you love. If you’re SICK of working for less than you’re worth and want to turn things around THIS YEAR, I’m going to give you the EXACT system that’s proven to get you clients: YES... You’ll get the exact templates to bring a flood of new leads in each week. YES... You have me and my team set up your Sales Funnels and Ads (That are proven to work). YES... You get the dead simple Sales Scripts to sign on high ticket clients (that’s sold over $3MM of clients). I literally GIVE you the system that is working for coaches all over the world. NO ONE else is giving you this high level done-for-you system, with the week by week hand-holding help. Check it out for yourself

Tranquility. Peaceful. Yoga. Meditation. Still… We sing and dance and jump into the seas and oceans. We need the lake instead, sometimes. Or is it coming when the time comes? Should we have those rollercoasters, ups, downs, waves, noice and then go to the lake? Lakes are still so that you can look into them and see yourself. As if they tell you to calm down, look at your reflection, take that grimace off your face… Look into the face, into the lake, inside you… One, two, one two… Running shoes on the pathway… Misty… He sees the warmth of the air from his body evaporating, as if he is smoking. One, two, one two… He never thought he would jog in such a weather… Is it +2 or +4 maximum? Or is it freezing?… Maybe… One, two, one two… Breath… Keep it steady… One, two… Keeping the pace… All by himself… Jogging… His Nikes… One two… One, two… He is not cold, he feels he’s in control… He thinks where he is… One, two, one, two… Shoes he is looking at and looking ahead… All greed but already getting yellower… Fall… Late fall is it? So cold… Or perhaps it’s because it’ve very early in the morning… Or perhaps it’s the winter already… One, two, one, two, – jogging… Around the lake… Swans, ducks, some early risers, so quite… So peaceful. It’s just hime, he thinks, around the lake… Or is it a pond?.. That’s a small one… It will be around, half circle and then along the Serpentine… And back… About 5 or 6 km it will be… Jogging… Past Kensington Palace, Italian Gardens… Small crossing… Into Hyde Park… Round Pond… Then Serpentine… Jogging… Alone… London… This is when he seems highest… Achieved… There… The Banker, jogging 6:30 am past Kensington Palace… Around the pond, around Hyde Park… Back to Notting Hill Gate, Pembridge Gardens… All good, all cool… He. Lake. Mist. Shoes. One, two, one two… He quit. He returned. Back home. Away from London. Thank you Hyde Park. Thank you, Lake. Thank you, mornings… it’s you, perhaps, that showed me myself. He thinks… If he misses anything from London, that’s those mornings… One, two, one, two… Swans in the lake… Tranquility. Peaceful. Jogging around the lake. One, two, one, two… Home is better, he decided. Was it for the lake and those mornings that helped him make up his mind? Well… It was so peaceful… One, two, one, two… He… Jogging… His shoes… Around the lake… 6 to 7 am… Home is better. Marc is the ONLY known 5 year survivor of de-differentiated chondrosarcoma. A former D1 football player for the University of Texas, father of 3, and devoted husband learned almost a decade ago that his life was most likely to soon come to a close. With his optimistic and make the most of it attitude, Marc is beyond 9 years of being in remission for a once thought to be incurable condition. Marc has since turned his experience into giving back and has become a private pilot and flies today's cancer sufferers to treatment from North Texas (Decatur), and volunteers his time with many charities including Raquel's Wings For Life. "You're gettin what you're gettin, cuz your givin what your givin..." https://raquelswingsforlife.comhttps://kbmdhealth.comhttps://gutcheckproject.comHey hi Mandy if you don't know me it's probably because I'm not famous but I did start a men's grooming company called Harry's the idea for Harry's came out of a frustrating experience I had buying razor blades most brands were overpriced overdesigned and out of touch and here is our approach is simple here's our secret we make sharp durable blades and sell them at honest prices for as low as two dollars each we care about quality so much that we do some crazy things by world-class German blade factory obsessing over every detail means were confident in offering 100% quality guarantee millions of guys have already made the switch to Harry's so thank you if you're one of them and if you're not we hope you give us a try with the special offer get a Harry starter set with a five blade razor weighted handle shave gel and a travel cover all for just three bucks plus free shipping just go to Harry's.com and enter 5000 at checkout that's Harry's.com code 5000 enjoy and here we are it is episode number four of get Jake project here with Dr. Kenneth Brown I am Eric Rieger again hey doing today I'm doing fantastic episode number Quatro number Quatro that is Spanish for radio no as mentioned before that is Spanish number four yes you are you pretty well versed in Spain Georgia were bilingual home absolutely well do you like to speak Spanish and I'm probably the worst speaker in the house. Let's say okay hey just a quick tough nod off the jump don't forget that today's episode of gut check project is brought to you by John Teal get your own genteel@lovemytummy.com/spooning use code spoony same sums of money so have I been taking some voiceless and also trying to nail that the throne going it's going horrible was that it was that your that you shot that was my best shot is that you back also brought to you by KPMG health brand-new KB TCDD but now you can get to the gut check project.com and be linked directly to the KPMG store and find your own KPMG CBD awesome baby if I gargle with that before trying single improvement it could work well we got a great show today and were going to get to him in just a moment that our guest today is Mark simple minimal touch on that here in just a moment incredible story of survival new lease on life and what he's doing after his battle with cancer but if you been watching get check project for all of the last three weeks you know that dark to our first half-hour is news and notes for gut check project so Dr. Brown what's happening new in the Brown household here since Elisha well in the Brown household what's really exciting is my daughter in her improv it's just theatric class she's a sixth-grader she came home and taught me something really really good that basically whatever you doing improv what you have to do is say yes it's yes and secondly if dues trust third thing is listen and then the fourth thing is make a statement and I heard that no like I need your teacher to come over to KBS headquarters we can work on that as a teambuilding exercise improv exercise to make a team yes and I love that yes and and then I want to trust what's coming next I loved this pretty while the basically an improv class she is learning just great communication skill left I thought we were laughing about it last night so Zachary know to come home with like what you learned today and that's were talking about the really cool thing our house is my son is currently playing in the finals of a really big tennis tournament out in Indian Wells California the Easter bowl to big one so at 11 o'clock our time he will be playing in the finals were very very proud of it in both singles and doubles so the brown households having some good times right now about you well number one shout out to Lucas and Karla those are both the great notes to to be able to carry around the data know that you're proud of both of them for me both of the boys have moved into off-season basketball there really fired up they've been out of basketball all of about 10 days which I think if you shoot who apparently that's way too long so they both get started but something that we did as a family that was a lot of fun just a little week ago I should've mentioned it last week show I'd never done it before my oldest son actually done it before a couple of times and that is we all sat down relaxed and got pedicures and I'm here to tell you that include dad included nice if you haven't done it don't knock it did you try it because I'm going back that fell awesome and now I mean table I got really ticklish feet but I didn't know something learned about myself is that my left foot is more ticklish than my right because as they began to exfoliate the bottom of my foot especially the left side I was crying from laughing so hard as I got in my mouth and of course the other woman doing is looking up and laughing again with everyone else as they exchanged their own jokes in another language I'd alsojust like Spanish and did it at my expense was completely worth it and I will deftly be back so I almost got a pedicure once I know standing out front and I looked at my feet and it remind me of the scene from dumb and dumber with a grinder to toenails a wireless want to do that to anybody to put the clause back in the shoe keep on walking now is he always worried he wanted done it when I reveal like a Frito toenail or anything else like that but I think I walked away as best we can be that had since probably I was a baby's kids really good pedicure now don't even have to ask what you been up to because you and I rush to hang out we were this last weekend he and Emily were business makes a little bit of pleasure yeah and that was in the Utah powder mountain that was awesome incredible skiing lots of powder fantastic so much snow for late March he was beautiful is a great place to go and visit not crowded either now our ski experiences were little bit differently where they were loaded and so to put it in context Eric was like Kelly dropping and taking these tractors up and I actually had escorted down the mountain by two wonderful people Lindsay Vaughn and Susie Chapstick but it was Juliet and Karen are awesome so I survive it was a big thing didn't break anything didn't do anything but the our expenses were totally different you came back just on my couch that was incredible backcountry all powder and I was like oh yeah my little different I had two women sort of guiding me down the mountain the whole way so there's no shame in effect I'll even say whenever you but whenever we yeah got into our skis the first day you had planned on even making a few runs together it was snowing so hard I stopped to buckle up my helmet is safe and I looked up and Ken and the other four people that I was skiing with were gone they probably want you probably want 20 feet away from me but it was a complete wideout for the first what our we skied oh no I Don't I ended up staying in that area and like true why don't I lost everybody like it was you couldn't see your hand in front of you who not only did I not been skiing over 10 years that's not the way to start now and shout out to Blake Kingsbury for finding me he looked like a yeti lost in a snowstorm and that basically was my beacon on the way down I had no idea how to get down but dad know that was that was a great time up it to powder mountain if you like skiing snow skiing deep powder skiing you take yourself a big powder mountain we move on here a little bit to basically the news because yesterday while we were working at the Indocin or you ran up to me you said look at this study this is a little bit more in terms of what we've been talking about bore catalysts and what causes cancer I will let you take it over from there because it's pretty pretty incredible piece but thought it was so it was just published a photo so appropriate to have Mark on the show were duly talking about cancer and surviving cancer well in this just recently published in the Journal of science this month they did a study with a looked at how high fructose corn syrup actually enhances colon cancer in mice so what they did is they took the equivalent of one soda a day and they gave the mice that amount of fructose corn syrup the issue is that they had genetically engineered these mice so that they would get polyps and cancer sure which is funny because you wonder like your to be genetically engineered you never think that your to get that like I'm genetically engineered to be faster genetically engineered bigger stronger than one poor mouse is like on genetically engineered to get cancer and that's how they end up looking at these different studies so what they did as they showed that by giving the high fructose corn syrup dramatically raise the amount of polyps and cancer over 80 times the mice that were not given high fructose corn so this is with an equivalent of one soda one soda a day so it's absolutely incredible because I love your member but a year ago study came out where was looking at how the rate of colon cancer millennial's has been going to share we did a video on that on YouTube or Ricardo was we did the interpretive jujitsu and what it showed is it dealt with the millennial's were getting a higher rate of colon cancer because of obesity they should with these mice they did not become obese they did not develop metabolic syndrome it's strictly due to the fructose and the sugar that they were consumed then they were able to actually show that I take it was fructose the tumor cells love it so much that they could put a radioisotope and they could show that it just got sucked up it turns on certain genes that allows the tumor to go undetected absolutely fascinating because the fructose and that the high fructose corn syrup they believe could be very similar to others like table sugar bottom line is tumors love sugar and this is the first study that's been done were really actually look at that and it's actually fascinated Mileage Is about to Come to Clear My Throat What This Actually Shows Is Now They're Looking at How to Actually Adapt Fasting Plus Ketogenic Diet When You Have Two More Surprises If You Can Give Him Sugar That's Just Going to Absolutely Feed It like Crazy so Fascinating Study Just One Soda a Day Can Do This Just Write down A Few Things Here Because You Said A Lot Of Impressive Information so If We Were to Backtrack and We Can Take Away That Tumor Cells Love Sugar and Live They Love Circulating Glucose That's Going to Be Their Main Desired Use for Energy and That's How They Grow They Don't Have Energy They Can't Grow Something Else That You Said and There Was Was Really Captivating to Me and That Is They Were Able to Take the High Fructose Corn Syrup after Consumed and Basically Activate A Process Where the Body Could Not Detect That They Were Tumors Themselves so Not Only Were They Now Stealing the Energy so They Could Continue to Grow As a Cancer And Develop into a Bigger Tumor Diesel Tumors Now Are Being Able or Allowed to Activate Something Where They Were Basically Incognito Not Being Able to Be Detected by the Mice and Their Immune System Greg Will Exactly Actually Gets into so This Is Where I Start Getting into the Geeky Stuff Little Bit There's an Enzyme Called Keto Hexokinase Which Will Change Fructose into Fructose One Phosphate While That Turns on The Gene in the Tumor to Use the Glucose More so That's What Tells It to Absorb It More so It Actually Little Cascade and They've Actually Shown the Third Trying to Develop Drugs That Actually Block That So There's Ashley Phase 2 Clinical Trials Going on with Her Trends If They Can Block That One Little Enzyme Does That Sure so What Then The Able or Would We Then Be Able to Extrapolate That Maybe the Reason Why Millennial's Are Now Seeing an Increase In Colon Cancer Is Because Generationally Probably If We Were to Back It up Two or Three Generations We've Seen an Increase in Sugar Consumption People Believe That Sugar Is Related to Inflammation That Those Two Things Combined Together Are Now We Are Seeing an Increase in These Types of Cancers They're Being Detected Because When You Consume Any Type of Food He Goes Straight to Your G.I. Tract Would You Say That This Is Somewhat Related or Possibly Related Will That Was the Funny Part Is This Study Gets You Thinking about That Because When They When They Were This Is the First Time That We Have Seen People Having a Higher Incidence of Colon Cancer Than Their Parents Rights for Simon so It Was Speculated over It's Gotta Be Obesity It's Gotta Be the Metabolic Syndrome This Is the First One Would You Look at Something Ago Now Looks like It's the Way That Were Processing Food The High Fructose Corn Syrup Is in Everything Everything but It's Really Concentrated One Can of Soda and so the Consumption of Soda Has Increased since the 80s Significantly So Is It Our Diet That's Doing This Were Trying to Label It with Different Things Owed Sedentary Lifestyle or Possibly It Smoking or Whatever Now Looks like Our Diet Is Really Contributing to the Amount of Cancers That Were Seeing You It's Wild If You Just Look Back I Can Never Looking Back at Pictures of My Dad or My Mom Growing up and What Family Pictures Look like Whenever They Went on Vacation He Would See Everyone and All the Ancillary Players in the Photographs Around And Who They Considered to Be Overweight Back Then In the 50s and 60s and Stephen the 70s And It's Starkly Different Than the Then the Body Type so What People Look like Today and What We Consider Overweight and for Me Personally I Really Don't Even Point It Those People It's Just Our Food Supply Is so Inundated With Lots of Things That You Just Are Unaware Could Possibly Be Contributing to Natalie Being Overweight but Probably the Diseases That Maybe Are Going to Have That You Don't Even Know the Are Manifesting Right Now Unfortunately Possibly Even Colon Cancer for Millennial Becomes Really Kind of the Disheartening That They Are Actually Allowing or They'd the Insurance Companies Are Allowing Us to Screen People at an Earlier Age and They Wouldn't Do It If It Weren't In Balance with with Cost It's Always More Cost-Effective to Catch a Cancer Early Then Late so If They Are Allowing People to Not Have To Wait till 50 To Come in and Just Get Their First Screening and Now They've Lowered It Doubly 4545 and If There's a Family History of Violence Then It's 42 Start to Begin and That Was Not That Way It All 10 Years Ago for Sure It Was an End It's Fascinating Because Here I Am I Just Got This Article Yesterday You and I Were I Was Doing Colonoscopies Yesterday and I Just Started Jumping up and down Because I Realize That When Patients Go into Recovery Most of Them Are Given a Can of Soda after They Get out There Sentiment. To That Right Now Were to Put a Stop Ides I Told All the Nurses Alike No More so to Tour Patients Were Trying to Stop Colon Cancer And Were Causing It by Drinking Minnesota so We Should At Least Lead by Example Would Be Given Patients a Pack of Cigarettes with Her Leaving the Endo Center I Got Admit It Did Nobody in the Hospital System Seems to and from RT Friends at Them so I Bet If You Want to Find the Smoking Dock Just Look for the Respiratory Therapist outside of the Hospital Why That's the Same at Every Single Hospital Ultimate Training Every Hospital Billing I Don't Know Either It It's It's It's Really Kind of Fascinating Hey Before We Might Give Any Other Quick Takeaways from This Particular Study Rotates Just That This One Is Just so Impressive Because It Really Shows That the Way That We May Be Treating Cancers in General Is Wrong so I Talked to Some My Cancer.Friends of My Katie Put People in a Ketogenic Diet Greatly When the Do That No We Don't Do You Ever Use Fasting When Somebody Has Us and We've Discussed before That the Fasting Mimicking Diet Actually Has Been Shown to Improve The Effect of Chemo And Decrease the Amount of Side Effects but That's Still Not Being Implemented so Here Is One Example It Always Starts out As Animal Studies Are Which Is When Humans but I Think That This Is the First Step to Show Hey Proper Treatment of Cancer Is to Starve It Not to Just Dump a Bunch of Sugar on It Which Is What Were Kinda Doing Yeah Isn't It Interesting That Maybe Even When Your Body Is Trying to Recover from an Episode of Cancer Not Just When It's Chemo Induced but When People Begin to Lose Weight Everyone Immediately Becomes Concerned Possibly It's Sometimes the Body Just Knows What He Wants to Do And by Starving These Tumors from the Circulating Glucose Is Its First Mechanism of Defense We've Got to Stop Feeding This Is Base Leads Rogue Cell Or Whatever It Is It Happens to Be Going Out Of Control Yeah… That I Think It's Faster Oh Did You See the Speaking Fascinated to See That That's California Man Was Awarded $80 Million Because He Had 56 Acres That He Was Using Roundup for Decades $80 Million That Is so Wild That It so It's an Incredible That It It Took This Long to Find out about and We Were Spraying It on Everything so We've Got Dividing up the Deck Stacked against You If You Got a Carcinogen on Your Food Chair and Then If You're Going to Take the Corn Fructose Which the Horn Was Sprayed Right Now We've Got a Double Whammy Going on Right There You I Can or When the First Big Move in a Big Push of the Non-GMO Foods This 90 Mode Foods That and I Was Really Rather Ignorant in Terms of What That Actually Meant And It Was Really Easy to Find Detractors from People Who Were Reporting That Movement like All They're Just They're Just Afraid They Were Doing New Technology in Food Development and Etc. so Much More Than That It Comes down to Protecting You and Yourself from Carcinogens Which Can't Taste You Can't Detect You Have No Idea You Have the Healthiest Person in the World Is Exercising Not Smoking Trying to Eat Right And While They Are Eating the Foods That They Trust Such As a Great Piece of Broccoli Vegetable Actually Consuming Glyphosate or Roundup In Their Food and They Get Sick That I Read Another Article Which Showed If You're Exposed to Round up on a Regular Basis You Have over a 41% Chance of Getting Lymphoma Hodgkin's Lymphoma I Don't Know Where They Got That That I Need to Find the Actual Article but in This Particular Study They Were Referencing Ups I Think That Was Used As a Type of Cancer That That Man Got And That's Why He Was Awarded This so Probably for a Follow-Up Episode Because What We Do Here Is Always Try to Speak into the Facts and Know That We Seen the Trend on Various Types of Cancers Including Lymphoma Have Been Increasing I Just Don't Have It on Hand That We Will Tackle That Probably in a Future Episode in Terms of the Non-GMO Versus GMO Roundup Life Estate Is or Has To Be Something to Though Because You Have the Lymphoma Belt in the United States Which Is Nebraska and Iowa Run from Agronomy and That's What University Breast Is so Good at Transplants Because They're One of the First Places to Do the Autologous Bone Rail Transport Because They Were Seen so Much Leukemia and Lymphoma And They Didn't Technically Everyone Said They Couldn't Explain They Didn't Know What It Was But It's the Same Thing Is Whenever They First Figured out the Black Lung Was Kind of the Problem In Minutes It's Really No Different EE No One Created the Industry to Make People Sick but Once People Began to Get Sick It's like What's the Acclamation Here Are Just Kind Crazy Everybody's Getting Sick and You Realize It's a Sit in the Air and You It's It's Really No Different from the Time That You and I Went to Virginia We Worked in the Coal Mine That One Day Yeah with Zoo Lander Haplotype Man Man's Underrated Moving Speaking of Movies Are Yesterday's Sent Me Our Last Episode and That We Get A Lot on Polyphenols CBD Really Bob about Your Hobbies but the One That Really Stuck out to Me That We Had Asked I Think Six Different Times Was How Does CBD Address Anxiety and We Don't Have a Whole Lot of Time Right Now but That You Take That You Would've Drilled a Hole Show on That but Basically the Way That I Tell My Patients Is CBD Just Sort of Presses the Reset Button and Puts Everything Back in Balance and If You Think of It Anxiety Is Just an over Firing Nervous like Sensitive Nerve Always Does Is Just Calm It down like a Traffic Cop so That You Just Get All the Anxiety Is Just a Perception of Neurons Firing Right below the Extreme Version Would Be Seizure Early on Just Because Everything down Gets to Go Back to Normal Now so I Kind of Explained It to My Patients Might Just Try It If You Have a Deficiency in Your Endo Cannabinoid System Chances Are You Can Have a Pretty Good Response with Wild Thing Is the Just of Multiple Applications for Utilizing The Indo Cannabinoid System Which Everyone Has In Their Own Body Basically Resetting Just like He Said to Make People Feel Better and There's a Bunch of Different Ways to Make It Happen but Rather Than Make It Sound like a Magic Pill for Everything We Really Want to Break That down and Build Keep Those Questions Coming Dealing with Anxiety Is Something You're Going to Have Someone on a Think in about Six Weeks I Think so You and at That Point Time Will Get a Much Much Much Deeper but Any Other Applications of CBD and Questions like That Combine with Polyphenols… Gasifier Questions And She Fought That for 10 Years and Multiple Servers But No Bone Cancer They Can Is It Even Common for an Older Person to Have a Bone Cancer Both Extinct It's Very Rare The Type of Cancer You're Talking about the One That You Ended up Being Diagnosed with What's Unusual about It That Involves Both Bone and Cartilage Nice Leather Coat the Deed Differentiated Type of Cancer Router Actually Goes into Both of Them There Is a KJ's Disease When You're over the Age of 60 That Can Turn into Bone Cancer but Most of the Time It's Kids That Actually Came to Bone Cancer That's Called Osteosarcoma so This Is A Completely Different One It's Very Unique Very Very Rare Well the Congress or Coma Is As Rare and That Was the Original Diagnosis from the First Biopsy Which Is like You Said Boeing and Cartledge and F They Took the Tumor out and Did a Full Biopsy Then They Decided What We Pulled out a Bunch of Homogeneous Sales at That Point in Time and so Controversial, Is Not Exactly What It Is No Matter/in This This Loaf of Bread to Define the The Real Answer and It Should Be Differentiated Which Means That They Can't Tell You Where It Came from Whether Described It to Me Was If What What's the What's the Cell in Your Body That the T Cells That Produced the The so the Osteoblast No Over-The-Counter Blessed Usually It's It's a Blast That's the Precursor No so If I Have a Cell in the Body of Stem Cell or Something That's Going to Create a Fingernail As of the Stem Cell Yeah Okay so the Stem Cell It Is Releases Sale to Become a Fingernail or Hair Follicle And That It Was It's Differentiated So It Goes from What That Stem Cell Is to the Fingernail Will It Fall Short That's the D Differentiated Part so They Don't Know Where It Came from It Ends up And All Your Organs at Some Point Time They There Wasn't There Is No Cure That They Have Found This Point They Just Keep Having Surgeries and Taken Stuff out So What You Think You Know Your 44 Years Old Got Young Kids What's Really Going through Your Brain I Mean Let's Walk Us through Somebody That Actually Unfortunately You're Still Here to Talk about It What's Going through Your Brain That You Had a Doctor Come in Well So Entry Part of the Story I'm in Amman for a Week Four Weeks Actually in a Body Cast, but I'm Laying in His Bed and Can't Move And Now Let the Bones Everything He'll And the First Time the Doctor Comes in Orthopedic Lady She Brings a Guy with Her Big 6 Foot Seven Guy Hi Mark I Want You to Meet This Guy from the Blood Bank Okay Great a Home or Not She's Always She's Just Been No She's Trained in All These Fellows She's Just This Incredible Physician Innovative Because Five Years Prior to The Surgery That She Did for Me They Just Took the Leg off Understand. So You Run Rampant Leg She Had Created and Innovated This This Particular Procedure So the Guy Comes in from the Blood Bank And He Says I Think We've Infected with HIV In One Yeah Blood Transfusion I Think We've Given Your Chubby So I'm Kind of Freak in a Little Bit of Artie Get This This Rehab This Will Be a 24 Month Rehab and Learn How to Walk and Develop a List of Internet Your Company Thanks and Thorne Legibly And the He Was Kidding Right Was a Silly Bit Series And so We Can Freaked out so It Goes Janice and I Gonna Freak out All Just This Conversation but You That I Know It's Only Kind of Well He Comes Back in 0234 Days Later and Says Ride so We've Retested Your Blood It's Not Showing up There's No Markers in Your Blood Will Continue to Test You Will Think You're Okay I Think We Have Something False Reading Which Is Probably Not Coming He's Probably Just the Messenger They Probably Have the Biggest Guy There's like Every Head Every Time We Infect Some Truth HIV-AIDS Has Represented How Often Does This Happen in That Particular Blood Bank Is like Sorry I Got a Get to Know the Room Overhearing. We Have an Assignment You So He Leaves after I Come in the Clear but This Kind of a Roller Coaster of Stuff That You Know You Had the Surgery 24 Months Now You Have a Chevy or Whatever You Get Is No Fight This Fight She Comes in a Couple Week Later Zone Brings Another Doctor and Says Hey Mark You Need to Get Your Affairs in Order Oh Because You Got about That Best Six Months to Live Unlike What Was Going on and so You Ask about What Was Going to Your Head Are You There's Denial First You Told Me HLB's Are Not Buying Your Story Anymore Now You Tell Me That I Got Six Months to Live on the Bind That Story Anymore Either And the You Know He Leaves and Then We Go through All the Scenarios over the Statistics What's Is This Legit How Do You Know Is Is a Misdiagnosis We Believe in Miracles Mistakes And He Wouldn't Talk about Any of That Stuff Just Works on a Positive Attitude No You Have Good Family Good Support Group and We Need to Pray to Whoever You Pray to And the In Order to Go As Best We Can Only Point I Would Become Polytheistic Sure Start Praying to All of Them Well and He Leaves Right and so There Is a Guy in Town Aaron Milstein Was in Town Visited Me in the Hospital and This Guy Delivers Loses Me an Error My Dad I'm 10 Crap And My Wife's Back Home And She Had Heard This in a Cigarette I'm Not Saying a Word Aaron When You Go Home You Not Saying a Word to Your Wife I Want This out to My Wife Comes Back in This Weekend and Dr. Robbie by the Way You're Gonna Deliver the News I'm Not Going to Write so He Leaves And so You Go through the Know Is Calico 5° of Separation You Denial Whatever What You Gonna Do Now Get Your Fair Share Is My Tell You That You Get Zero Liberty Anything but Your Kids And in the Lives of Things That Night I'm Laying in Bed and Talk about Having No Begin Being the Religious Was out Born and Raised in the Church and Hence Have a Pretty Good Religious Background but I'm Pitched at That Point I'm Having a Fight with God More Argument The Stages Brother and This Isn't Happening to Me And I've Got a Wife I Get Three Kids If I'm Good – I'm Okay Back but I'm Not Okay Leaving Them Alone Without Needed to Take Care Of My New Summer Influence Rest Their Life And the Time Marcus Was Third Grade and Then EAN Where like to Fit in Sync with Their Six Grade Yeah They're Not Rulon I'm And Some past Minimum Wrestling in Bed before Because I Can't Get Any Risk As I'm in so Much Pain Amount to Different Campaign I'm Fighting in Bed And, and I Asked the Doctor Early about Miracles Mistakes And I'm I'm Telling You since I'm Sitting Here Pam There's a Just Peace Washes over Me and I Was like I Got This Boot You Have To Worry about It Again from That Point on Never Thought about It Again No New That I Just Knew I Was Gonna Survive My Job Was Just to Sit Back and Let the Doctors Do What They Do Just Survive And I Never Had Another Doubt It Was Just Another Doubt When You Go to All Kinds of Different Emotions but at That Point I Can Pinpoint That Particular Night In That Particular Time Lay in My Bed That Just This Piece Just Should Just Watch the So It Was a Journey so Obviously Held That the Doctors There Was Intervention There Was Medicine Use What Was the First Step and Then Going through That Kind of Schedule Well after He Told Me Also Dine Six Months He Says Renders and Chemo Which One Part of the Original Plan And He Says If the Cancer and Get Your First Chemo Might Take You to His Close like in the Death And so Started at about 240 Pounds And Ended up at Hundred and 87 Pounds Not Hear My Head Not Eyebrow Not on Those Here Nothing to My Butt Crack Nothing Great I Got a Great Plus Track Story I'll Tell You What I Think Is Interesting It's like I Can't See Any Hair Appear Honey Get over Here and Check It Check It You Opened It up so I Got a the Story Them so Now They Get You up to Rehab Right and You Get Move in and and Running It through One of My Jobs Was to Get up Just Walked to the Nurses Station and Back And I Got This Walk and I Get This Go We Haven't Got a Nobel Drama so Don't Fall down And His Name's Alex Left That Matters but Some Walking a Little Bit And I Get a Nurse Station Come Back Think of Had a Good Day Chemo Start to Sit in This Is Going on for Several Weeks Now Now I'm Bald In Almost All My Eyebrows Nothing Else, but Record Showed That Just Run the Story Anyway so I'm Plugging along with This Little Walker and I'm Sweat Its Work And so His Squeak Squeak Squeak Is a Bad Food You Gotta Stop The Guy Gets New Tennis Shoes or Something to Those at the Time No Hearings All Messed up And so That Was Just Really Driving Me Crazy so That You Stop It's Not May Misuse Arts Week and That Is Not Me so Just Stop He Stopped and I Don't Squeak We And Alex That You Know It's Not Me Markets Coming Out Of the Words Come from Is Not Me Maybe It's the Walker That Is Not the Walker Alex to Stop so He Lets Go And We Schooley and a Wooden Walker so at This Point I Am Not Weight-Bearing on That, My Right Leg at That Point What It Happened I Had Worked up Just Enough of Us Went up That In My Butt Crack Every Time I Walked He Would Just Go So Now I Go through All This Every Stop Looking around and so Now I Know That Every Time That I Was Going to Rehab I Was in a Walking Pillow Squeaked That's When I Knew That I Had Accomplished My Goal Don't Use Workup Enough to Wash with Sweat Now Get the Squeak Going and It Was Just the Funniest Thing That I Got a Bazillion Just Hilarious Stories Out Of All This Have a Real Serious Situation but There's a There's A Lot Of Humor in It and You Have Some Humor Chair Otherwise You Know the Doctor Really Said If You Don't Have Some A Positive Attitude about Stuff and Support Your Family and I Completely Believe That Because There's so Many Things in Our Brain We Don't Know That the Brain Does Leases or Controls in You Being You Guys Mean the Doctors Will Have All That Knowledge Young at All, Intellectual Me What I'm Trying to Wrap My Brain around Is When Your Brain Said No We Got This What Did Something I Mean There's Epigenetic's Going on When No I Got This Does That Change Something in Your Body That Allows You To Have a Better Chance of Surviving a Cancer That Kills a Mindset Has To Matter Hat on It Months It's Been a Big Think about Using Somebody in the Office in the Head They Walk around Get That Permanent Frown on Her Face No They're Just Negative All the Time and They Got Those of People Walk around or Just Bouncing off the Water Happy and You Can't Tell Why Is That Is That Genetics Is That Something in Your Life Is It Just Your Attitude What Is It Your Your Physical Appearance Turns into What You're Your Attitude Becomes and If a Negative Note That the Frown on My Face Than You Can See the Body Language That Best Personality That You Become so the Survival Piece I Think Is Is A Lot Of It Is Mental and It's a Battle and If You Decide At Some Point I'm Going with This Then You Can Whip It I Can Tell You That Story but I Could Also Mean There Will Be Another Thousand Stories out There the People Didn't Survive How Do You Know I Remember after It Has a Good While after You Finished Everything You Came up with a Slogan I Think You Started to Incorporate Will Get to It Later but It Was Your Getting What You're Getting Because You've Been Giving What You Been Giving Right And That Can Go Back to Your Attitude Really in Anything Right It's That's Funny I Stole This from Zig Ziglar I Wish I Could Say I Invented or Kept It but It Wallace I Was Gonna Let You Float within the 21 When Her Water, Carried My Wife Work Foreman and Brought Home All the Tapes and so on Wasn't to Home and I Thought Just That's Just so Appropriate Because If You Give a Bad Attitude You Can Get a Bad Attitude and Return And I've Just Goofed around in Different Settings Where People Can Get into a Situation Were A Lot Of Negative Gossip Producing All the Nonsense on Social Media and in the Talking Heads in the News and the Media Nowadays You Going to Setting and Thereby Can Be Fixated on a Particular Item Have This Negative Attitude and You Just Bring One Person in There and You Start Lacing in the Loop with a Positive Attitude and You Watch the Whole Dynamics of the Room Change yet and It's Kinda Interesting Just Somebody's in the Coming Change in Attitude and Works the Same Way yet I Just Know Where to Listen or Ask Might so That's a Big Long Name for the Cancer but It's a Type of Bone Cancer but Is It That Is There Any Other Way to Describe It He's Asking If There Is Any Other Way to Scratch I Have yet Forgot What I Thought As I Have Found Art but That Is Any Other Way to Describe That Type of Bone Cancer Mark The Lie We Had a Listener Who Is Written in and Wanted to Know Better That Long Night – GD Differentiated Congress or, Yeah Indeed Differentiated You Can Convert Sarcoma Condo Sarcomas the Common Name for It but Because It's Special The Differentiated Gallic Alec up and I'll Just Text a Link Back to Them through Spiny and yet It's a It's It's Rare It Say There's Really No Other Way to Describe It Other Than You've Got This Cancer That's Crossing over between the Cartilage in the Bone and This Is Forming The Cancer That's Coming to the End of the Pelvis like That The Edges Sounds While I Equate Just Give Us a Rundown and Then of What the Activities What You Had to Do I Know They Had to Do Chemo You Had Your Surgery So Yeah so We Had 19 Our Own Record of Good Story in This So You Know Is Doctors Going for Any Kind of Surgery They Give You the Purple Pen Right Operate on the Right Knee and so As the Patient Number Right Now No Make a Mark on My Knee Right Knee So When You Go and You Don't Screw up and Mark the Light on the Left So the Plastic Surgeon Guy Comes in and He Still Me All That Were Gonna Do And They Were Going to Take 6 Cm Out Of the Middle of My Stomach All the Way down Past My Bellybutton up Got a Whole Brand-New Bellybutton by the Way And There Were No since This Backup Okay and Their Rent Their Creighton Flaps If You Think about Taking a Big Jump Folgers Coffee Cup Put Record Your Pelvis and Pushing It Always through Your Body Everything That Went into That Coffee Cup Ended up in the Trashcan Okay so You Got a Cavity There Now What Are You Going to Do so They Were Taken the 6 Cm Out Of My Lab to Put into This Flap down Here to Keep My Insides from Falling up the Backside These Pointers Right Going Right Drawing and the So I Took That Purple Pen and I Said Dr. Reese Make Sure You Leave Me a Sixpack Abs on My Stomach I've Never Had a Sixpack Abs I Thought That Was the Only Chance I Was Ever to Get It and He Did a Pretty Dang Good Job But The Orthopedic Lady Worked for 15 Hours Straight And in the Plastics Guided a Four Hour Surgery on Same Day on the Same Setting And so 19 Hours Totals, It's Amazing Crazy That Is a Long Surgery Which Is I Mean Just Absolutely Incredible Because A Lot Of Times We Talked about Where Medicine Fails but Certainly You and I Talked about That True I Feel like Medicine Could Be Doing a Better Job For Instance Controlling Diet Right Then We Have That 15 Hours Surgery That Is Incredible This Is Where It's Definitely Succeeding Yes Well You Guys There's a Reason Why They Call It You Practice Medicine Because There Is Little Perfection in It Because You're Operating on Human Body Which Is Imperfect to Begin with Right And so And We Talked a Bit Earlier How Went from from One Dr. Trying to Chase down a Diagnosis and I Feel Fairly Fortunate That Each Doctor Said I've Tried I've Made an Attempt and I'm in Have To Send You to Somebody Else and so I Kept It Referred over and over and over It Might've Been a Frustrating Situation but in Reality the Doctors Practicing What He Knows And's Finally Stops and Says I Think There's Somebody Better To Help with Your Diagnosis or Help Push You down the Track Where You Need to Be so Appreciated That That They Weren't so Egotistical That Said I Got This in the Switch Problem Is in and Sit Me down You the Wrong Path so It Was Kind of a Neat Progression That See How the Physician Community Just They Work Together Come up with Right Diagnosis at the End of the Day So Then What Were the Were There Any Other Foreign Bodies Any Other Animal Parts That Maybe You're Sporting Right Now That Didn't Just Belong to You Well So I Have Somebody Else's Pelvis and Me Okay and I Don't Know Are You Going on Animal Parts but While I'm Here Here about a Man Not Really Sure so the Good the Joke Is That They Were Looking for Similar Pelvis Same Shape Same Size the Telegraph You Know of Cadaver Bone to Bone And the Want to Find Something And They Finally Find It in the Comments Aren't We Can Do Surgery on This Particular Day Now You Don't Have a Whole Lot of Female Orthopedist Right And the Lady That's down at MD Anderson Is a Female And so I Thought That Was a Little Unusual And I in My Day Job I Do with Physicians All over the Country And so That's a Little in Common So I Go to the MD Anderson Website Liquor up And It's Black Lady Which Makes It Even More Uncommon And When You Meet Her You Go Oh My Gosh You Are Perfect for This Job You Are the Right Person She Is a Freak and Ball Buster and She Always Had All These Other Physicians Following Her around Because She Was Kind of a Pioneer in This Particular Type of Procedure so She Had Called And Finally Found the Bone Mrs. Art Room Schedule Surgery for This Particular Day How Does She Do That like Can't Even Begin Looking for a Pelvis It's Going to Fit In a Could Ever There's a Bone Bank And Oh so You – and Then Donate Your Organs and the and This Is up California and This Is Another Funny Story That I'm at a Conference That I Go to Once You're Always with You Guys In All These Vendors Are in the Know in the Exhibit Hall And I'm Talking about My Story It to This One Guy Nieces Where Did You Get Treatment Sit down in Houston in the Engine Just When Did You Do That Is It in July 2010 I Think I Know about You Simply Mean Sidwell My Wife Works at the at the the Bone Donor Place Whatever It Is Where They Freeze All the Stuff and She Was Working Going to Bone after Bone after Bone to Try to Find a Picture When It Was This Size and Had to Go to Houston and Bob Baugh And*The Chief I Was Least Found She Was Looking for Shoes As It Will This You Know Anything about the Person That I Got It from And She Says Yeah 300 Pound Black Lady So I Thought I Got This Black Doctor Working on Me I Got This Black Bone in Me and I'm Have a Soul When I Come out Here You Do Dance Better No I Do Not Either to Help Me up Here But I Forget What Your Original Question Was about Diverted into the Wrong Snow We Were Just Talking My Animal Yeah We Just Just the Different Different Graphs That You You Had to Use Mean Here's Surgery Although It We Already Know That It's Long There's There's a Process to It Is a Process to the Chemo There Was a You Had the Best Attitude but It Was Still Work but I Can Still Remember That the Months and Months of of Watching You Show up Tell Your Kids Athletic Events and Games Try to Pull the Truck As Close As You Could to the Football Field You Said You Could Watch and Participate In Family Activity and Every Time I Stop by to See You He Did All You Could to Smile and I Knew That It Was Difficult But You Made It through… Told and Believe Miracles Mistakes Not I Think I'm a Walking Living Breathing Miracle You Don't Ever Take a Single Day for Granite Because If You Have yet Sit and Think about It for Second Get Your Affairs in Order Get Six Months to Live I Think That Would Change Your Life a Little Bit The Things That You Would Miss Definitely so It Just Enhances Your Attitude There Is a Great Day Rated below When You Got to the End Of Basically Felt Okay We Are in the Clear Now We Are Now Are Counting Months an Hour to Count Years of Mark's Survival Time What Was the Turnaround Said Search Engine Optimization… It’s a topic that’s hardly talked about anymore by entrepreneurs, because… Well… It’s not that sexy, it’s not new, it takes a lot of time, and frankly, it’s quite mysterious. But, if you take a long-term approach to your business, and if you’re willing to feed Google with extremely high-quality content over the next 3-5 years, you can create an absolutely incredible advantage and profit center for your business. How big? Well today we’re joined by one of the biggest SEO traffic experts in the world, my friend Neil Patel. During his career, Neil has been a marketing and traffic consultant for Google, Ebay, Facebook, Microsoft, SalesForce, and General Motors. Neil’s personal websites currently get over 1.7 million unique visitors per month just from organic search traffic, and get this… That traffic turns into over 1,000 new email subscribers per day, and over $400,000 per month in revenue… For free. It’s an unbelievable asset for any business, but it takes time, knowledge, and expertise to implement, and thankfully Neil is here today to give you the roadmap. If you’ve ever wanted to know how to start getting your website ranked at the top of Google in a real and lasting way, this episode is for you. And by the way, if you want to connect with me personally on Instagram, you can find me @RealMikeDillard Without further ado, please welcome, Neil Patel. Well - It's time you guys learned a bit more about the hosts of the D3 podcast, starting with Ryan Woodland. Ryan has made his way through his 25+ year gaming career mainly by drinking and punching people (or, more accurately, getting punched by people) but I suppose there may have been a few moments of intelligence in between. His career has had him working for Nintendo, Sony, EA, and Zenimax, to name a few, spanning systems from SNES and Sega Genesis all the way through to XBox One and PlayStation 4. So... let's see what he can remember about all this - hopefully it'll be coherent enough to publish!

Well… It looks like Hailey might have been part of some sort of cloning experiment. The team didn’t have time to tease out any of the details before they were attacked. Also, if it hadn’t been obvious before, something is very wrong with Eion, and something has changed. There won’t be time to figure it out now… time to make an escape. It’s about WW1 news 100 years ago this week - and it’s about WW1 NOW - news and updates about the centennial and the commemoration.WW1 Centennial News is brought to you by the U.S. World War I Centennial Commission and the Pritzker Military Museum and Library. Today is May 17th, 2017 and I’m Theo Mayer - Chief Technologist for the World War One Centennial Commission and your host. World War One THEN 100 Year Ago This Week We have gone back in time 100 years - and the united states government launches the “The Official Bulletin” the country’s war information newspaper. It is published daily under order of the - President of the United States - published - by the Committee on Public Information, George Creel - ChairmanWe have introduced you to George Creel previously. Creel is a journalist, friend and staunch supporter of Woodrow Wilson - especially during the election of 1916. So it’s not surprising that President Wilson appoints Creel to head the newly minted Committee on Public Information - the CPI - as a part of the new war effort. The CPI’s mission is to swing public sentiment and backing in favor of the U.S. war effort. Effectively George Creel is the head of America's propaganda and war information bureau. This includes all aspects of the U.S. media, including print, film, posters, music, paintings, cartoons… everything. One of the key products of the CPI is the Official Bulletin, largely forgotten and gone unnoticed - in the century since.Starting this week, We are re-publishing each issue of this daily historically newspaper on the centennial date of its release. This archive is a wonderful cultural resource that illuminates this dynamic period in our country’s history.Fortunately, the entire archive has been digitized by Google Books and we are very excited to bring it to you as a daily serial on our web site - at ww1cc.org/bulletin - all lower case. The editorial team at WW1 Centennial News is going over the 120 or so weekly articles, bringing you some of the interesting headlines and digging into a story or two. This week, some of the headlines read:“Urgent need of ships for coastal defense is outlined”This article includes the interesting note: A number of the finest yachts in the country have been tendered to the Government by the owners for use during the war, either free or on a nominal lease basis”In the article - the Assistant Secretary of the Navy writes - “We need coastal defenses. The present war is showing that the submarine is a weapon that has an important bearing on the final result.”That astute assistant secretary of the navy in 1917 will become the 32nd President of the United States in 1933 - Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Another headline reads - MISSION TO RUSSIA.The Department of State authorizes the members of the special diplomatic mission of the United States of America to Russia - our close allies during this war.REGISTRATION DISTINCT FROM THE DRAFT,STATEMENT BY WAR DEPARTMENT EXPLAINSThis article that explains that all young men between 21 and 30 must REGISTER for the draft - but that being drafted is a separate and different issue. This is the first selective service moment in our nation’s history and there is a lot of interest and confusion about how it works. In fact - in the May 12, 1917 issue of the Official Bulletin - there is a great article looking at the number of men in the US who will be subject to QUOTE “selective conscription”.They estimate that around 10 million men between ages 21 and 30 need to register. That is around 10% of the US’ estimated population of 103-104 million people in 1917.Based on state populations, they are looking at around 1 million young men from New York, 875,000 from Pennsylvania, half a million from Illinois, Texas and Ohio, Remember a few weeks ago we talked about the fact that the US had virtually no national military - that in fact the state militias totally outnumbered the federal army. The building of that army is a story we will be following over the coming weeks.Link: ww1cc.org/bulletin Great War Project Joining us now is former NPR correspondent Mike Shuster from the Great War Project blog. This week Mike also focuses on the domestic struggle to get a handle on what it means - now that we have declared war. Mike - It sure doesn’t sound like the nation is of one mind on this!?[Mike Shuster]LINK:http://greatwarproject.org/2017/05/14/a-volunteer-army-or-the-draft/That was Mike Shuster from the Great War Project blog. War in the Sky Let’s take a look at the Great War in the sky one hundred years ago this week. Our story is about the first allied flying boat that managed to down a german Zeppelin. What IS a flying boat. Well It’s different from a pontoon sea-plane that has floats replacing or in addition to landing gear. Instead - flying boats are like ship hulls with wings - they do have pontoons out on the wings for stability when they land and take off - but they are a very desirable concept because they can be big and use a really long distance to take off and land - this works because they don’t need a runway to operate them just a reasonably calm body of water. The Curtiss H series is America’s leading flying boat design in WW1 - In fact, you might remember a few weeks ago when Michael Lombardi boeing’s senior historian, told us about an early Boeing contract to build some Curtiss H series flying boats under licence.Well one hundred years ago this week, a canadian flyer Robert Leike is tooling on patrol around in the north sea near amsterdam with his flight commander John Galpin. It’s nasty and rainy weather and the clouds are low. Around 4:45 am, the weather breaks and they spot a big german Zeppelin - The L-22 about 10-15 miles away.So they give chase to sneak up on her - the flight commander, Lt. Galpin gives Leike the controls and goes to man the twin Lewis Guns. They get to within half a mile before the zep spots them - but by then it’s too late. Leike dives down on her like a hawk as Galpin unloads an entire drum of incendiary bullets into the zeppelin - which catches on fire and crashes into the sea. The tiny wasp has stung the giant beast and prevailed. It’s a win for the allies and the loss of a precious zeppelin for the Germans. Leike is given the distinguished service cross and Galpin the distinguished service order for their action one hundred year ago this week in the great war in the sky.LINK:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Leckie_(RCAF_officer)#World_War_Ihttps://www.junobeach.org/canada-in-wwii/articles/air-vice-marshal-robert-leckie/ The Great War Channel Let’s move on to our friends from the Great War Channel on Youtube. With the support of WW1 Centennial Commissioner General Alfredo Valenzuela, Van Hoy guides her students to research, write and produce a series of mini-documentaries about the war. Students get to choose a topic that interests them, allowing for their voice and perspective to enter the work. The last batch of documentaries will be ceremoniously published online on the centennial of armistice day, November 11, 2018 at 11:11am. In this story about WW1 soldiers who, reluctantly at first, embraced embroidery as a therapy. Also known as “fancy work” - embroidery was widely used as a form of therapy for British and ANZAC soldiers wounded in the War – challenging the gendered construct of it - as “women’s work” . Themes of the soldiers’ embroidery ranged from military heraldry to scenes from the French countryside to pieces for their sweethearts. Go to ww1cc.org/369 - this is a project endorsed by the World War I Centennial Commission and sponsored in part by The Coca Cola Foundation. The project re-creates the Harlem Hellfighter’s 369th Regimental Band. The band originally consisted of 65 African American and Puerto Rican doughboys who charmed the hearts and minds of Americans and Europeans alike. It is said that they brought Jazz to Europe.Beginning last November, the program solicited freshmen and sophomore music students from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and other colleges and universities across America to enter a competition to be selected to join a re-creation of the 369th band. The band members have now been selected. And this past week it was announced that Dr. Isrea Butler, will lead the band as they retrace the steps of the original 369th, with performances at centennial celebrations in New York City; Brest and Paris in France; and a host of other historic locales. Dr. Buttler is currently the Director of Bands at The University of Maryland Eastern Shore. Both Mary Borden and Ellen Lamotte were field hospital nurses who witnessed some of WWI's worst casualties and went on to write about the experience. The post - discusses how many artistic works were censored after WWI because they seemingly portrayed the conflict, or the countries involved, in a negative light. Today, many of these previously censored works are considered among the best artistic representations of the war - in part - because of to the realistic way they painted a horrible, gory, corrupt, and anti-triumphant picture of combat and trench warfare. Announcement! Submit Your Questions for the Halloween Seance with Karen A. Dahlman! Visit BigSeance.com/feedback. I have a brief announcement and reminder for you. You may be wondering why I showed up on your phone or in your app, without starting out with, “Big Seance Podcast episode… fill in the blank”. Well… It’s because you need to make sure you’re involved in our upcoming Halloween seance! I will be recording our Halloween seance with Ouija expert, Karen A. Dahlman and her board partner Rodney on Thursday, October 13th, 2016. As I’m sure you know by now, it will not be live, like we previously announced, but after we pre-record the seance, I’ll then work on releasing the video as soon as possible. I’ll also put out an actual podcast episode eventually with audio highlights from the seance. So here’s what we need from you. We need your questions for the seance. Karen herself chimed in in the Big Seance Parlor on Saturday afternoon with some great tips and suggestions for questions. Here’s what she had to say: I want everyone to know that you can ask ANY QUESTION you would like for our Seance Session. You are not limited to just the deceased! We can communicate with your animals, address past life curiosities, receive messages from Spirit, ask for guidance/inspiration in your personal life, inquire about any other information you are seeking... Be creative and ask your burning questions! In addition to these questions, I plan on having a few questions of my own ready to go, and I’ll be focusing on contacting the spirits of several pioneers in the paranormal field. Submitting Your Questions for the Halloween Seance So how are you going to submit your questions? We REALLY want your question recorded in an audio format, with you introducing or not introducing yourself, however you choose. Remember that this audio will be featured in the video. The best way to learn to do that is by going to BigSeance.com/Feedback, and there you’ll find two simple ways to send in recordings of your questions. Of course, you can always e-mail your printed questions to me at Patrick@BigSeance.com as well. But again, PLEASE go to BigSeance.com/Feedback to learn how to send your question in an audio format, and that will make our Halloween Seance really great! What's my deadline? It’s Monday, October 10th at the time I’m throwing this out there, so you probably have until the early morning hours of the 13th, Central US time, to get your audio in. We’ve already got a few that I’m really excited about. And if you’d like to get an idea of what we’re planning, you can watch our LIVE Ouija Session with Karen from February 26, 2016. The fastest and easiest way to get there is to go to BigSeance.com/LIVE to see all our past live events. Well that’s it. you’ll hear from me again in just a few days with another episode that I’m excited for you to hear. You may now go back to your regularly scheduled October activities. You Rock! Peace! Record your voice feedback directly from your device on my SpeakPipe page! Call the show at (775) 583-5563 (or 7755-TELL-ME). I would love to include your voice feedback in a future show. Visit BigSéance.com for more information. Please help The Big Séance Podcast by subscribing, rating, and reviewing the show on iTunes, TuneIn Radio, Stitcher, Google Play Music, and iHeart Radio.
The gift I got today, that I want to share with you so you can keep moving forward. On today’s special 257th episode Russell talks about how money doesn’t buy happiness, but how you can achieve happiness by helping and serving others, as well as by improving your inner self. Here are some cool things to listen for in this episode: Why working towards wealth shouldn’t be your focus because in the end it doesn’t matter. Why serving other people’s needs will help you with your own needs and in turn help you achieve true happiness. And why focusing on your contribution and growth can help you actually become something and why that’s more important than wealth. So listen below to find out why money doesn’t equal happiness. ---Transcript--- Hey Everyone this is Russell Brunson. Welcome to episode 257, a very special episode of Marketing in Your Car. Alright everybody, I’m excited today and you may be thinking, Russell why is today so special? Well It’s special for a few reasons. First off, this is episode 257, that just sounds cool. Second off, right now, a little later on today we are taking these first 250 episodes and we’re putting them onto MP3 players that we will be giving away for free plus shipping, I think I talked about this a couple of months ago, but we’re going to do it. This is the last episode that will be on the MP3 player. So for those of you guys that are listening on the MP3 player, you made it to the end, congratulations! For those who have no idea what I’m talking about, give me about a week or two, we still gotta get them back from China, but when you go to marketinginyourcar.com, you’ll be able to get a free MP3 player with the first 257 episodes preloaded, which will be kind of cool. And my brother, actually edited out the intro song on most of them so you don’t have to hear the intro song 8 thousand times either, so that’s kind of cool too. So that way you can go and you can geek out. You can binge listen to everything while you’re everywhere and you’ll have your own personal MP3 player with the first 257 episodes, so I’m excited. That’s number one. So then with that said, I gotta think about something cool to say, because this is going to be the last episode that those that are on the MP3 player got. I can’t just end on a thought, it’s gotta end on something cool. So then I had all sorts of stress and pressure. I’m like, well crap. What am I going to talk about? Then it came to me, so I actually just drove back, this is my second drive to the office, I’m driving back home and back to the office because I wanted to get my notepad. This morning I had one of my coaching sessions with Tara, and it was interesting. Tara is my woo woo coach, you guys probably heard me talk about her a couple of times, super cool. They’re also in my Inner Circle and just some of my favorite people in the world. The coaching’s been really cool because its kind been coaching things but kind of you don’t know where it going to go and it goes different directions and every time there is something really valuable that comes out the other side of it. And this time it kind of answered a question that I don’t think it’s a verbal question I have had. Or I’m asking this question I’m asking out loud consciously. But subconsciously I think that probably all of us have this thought as we’re doing what we do in our lives and businesses. The thought is does any of this even matter? I am fully aware that someday I’m going to be dead and it could be today, that car just drove past, boom, could hit me. I could be doing my podcast and driving and I get hit by a car and it’s over. And I am fully aware of that. When I die, guess what I get to take with me. Nothing. It’s done. My cool car, my cool house, none of my……it’s gone instantly. So I get that, I believe that, I understand that. So it’s like, why do we even care? It’s interesting when my Grandpa passed away, probably a year and a half, 2 years ago now. I thought it was so weird, after he died they brought all my uncles together, basically they handed out his possessions he had left in life. There was a gun and a couple of things and that was it and I’m like, “Wow. My grandpa lived a full life. He was amazing.” By the time you get to the end you give away all your stuff, you got rid of them. It’s like, “Here are the 4 or 5 things I have left.” And you divvy them out and it’s done. Man that’s going to happen to me. The reality is none of this money stuff matters, even a little bit. Other than it helps make your life a little more comfortable here, but it doesn’t matter, it’s stupid, it’s ridiculous. My mission of helping entrepreneurs to share their message so they can make more money, and we talk about money a lot because that’s how we keep score. But does it even matter? When all is said and done, am I just kind of spinning my wheels? I think I subconsciously have that thought, maybe I should just shut down shop and focus on other places I can contribute. Does this contribution actually help, help people make money? You know what I mean? So there’s the question that I didn’t consciously ask, but from today’s coaching session kind of came out of it. And if you could see my notepad, I actually grabbed my notes. This is the first Marketing In Your Car I’m actually teaching from a notepad, so that’s how prepared…….I have these little circles with arrows that go around in a bigger circle, I think there’s 4 circles and the top circle I wrote, “Triggers Fears” and so what does that mean? What I probably do for a lot of you guys, I’m guessing, hopefully I get you guys excited and help you see the vision of what can be and where you could go. But I’m sure with that comes a lot of fears. Like, oh wow, he wants me to do a podcast, or he wants me to go spend money on ads. He wants me to do a webinar every single week. Every week he wants……all these fears come up, right. And then I’m trying to be a good role model, so I’m doing these things that I’m telling people to do and I’m actively, consistently doing them over and over again trying to be, I hate saying this, sounds stupid, but being the model. Here’s something….I gotta try and practice what I preach so people can see that and hopefully say, “If Russell can do it, I can do it.” That’s something Liz told me after she started having success, she said, “If Russell can do it, I can do it.” And I hope people feel that way. I want to be this thing, but a lot of what I’m telling people to do and teaching and coaching on there’s fear associated with it, right? If there weren’t fears, you would have already done it, but for some reason there’s these fears. And most of the time, most of the coaching and consulting I do is stuff people know. Sometimes there’s tactiful things that we bring to the table and they’re different. But most of the time, you kind of know the path, but there’s fears and concerns and false beliefs and things that keep you from that. So I’m coming in and I’m like a wrecking ball. Busting through these things and probably causing a lot of fears for you guys. So that’s the first step in my little mission here. The second step is come back after you fall through with tools. So it’s like, we got a new webinar movie, go! I’m freaked out! Don’t worry, here’s the tools to actually make that possible. These are the tools and the training and the coaching and consistent repetition of this stuff. If you listen to my message, if you listen to all 257 episodes, you probably noticed there’s a lot of patterns and a lot of repetition and a lot of things we come back to that are essential. So after we get the fears, after we set off the triggers that cause the fears, then my next step is I’m delivering the tools and the things to make it possible. And then those people, unfortunately not everyone, but the people who step into those fears and accept them and then go after the tools to fight it, eventually when they follow that process they get to a spot where they get money or security in their life. So it’s interesting because that’s typically the driving force for change. You go through this process, you have these fears, you learn these tools and then during this process you start becoming and that’s the word I want to stress. You start becoming something. You figure out what people need, you figure out how you can serve them at the highest level. You figure out your voice. You start learning it and developing as a human and as a person and you become something different, something more, hopefully. So when that happens, the way the world or the universe or whatever call it, rewards you for that sacrifice and that effort. And really it’s the transformation from growth to contribution. In fact, I have this as the overarching theme for the next Funnel Hacking Live, is like that transition from growth to contribution. There’s a point in our life where we’re growing and learning and studying and it’s all a growth phase for yourself. Because you can’t…..if you’re not prepared you can’t go out there and serve. So there’s a growth phase we all have to go through. But if you keep growing forever, you keep learning and growing and you keep that to yourself, you can’t keep progressing. The only way, there’s a point where you can’t progress in life through more personal development, or more growth, it’s impossible. There comes a point where the only way you can actually grow in life is by transitioning from growth to contribution, and then your growth comes through the contribution. My company grows now….me as a person grow as I help and serve other people and contribute to them and as they have success, that’s what brings me joy, which is kind of cool. There’s the religious tangent here that I probably won’t’ go too deep into because I know every time I talk about religion I get a couple funny stares, but for the Mormon’s who are out there listening. There’s a scripture that we believe in Moses 1:39 it says, “Behold this is my work and my glory to bring to pass the immortal and eternal life of man.” That’s God’s mission too. It’s not to make him more glorious or better. He grows in glory by contribution, by helping us to achieve our full potential. So it’s kind of this really cool thing. So back to this, so through that process of becoming who you’re supposed to be through the personal development, the growth and going through the tools and all these things, at the end you become something and have the ability to start contributing and helping and serving other people. And when you start contributing, the first thing that starts coming back to you, because it’s the way this world judges monetary value is money, you start making money. At first it’s exciting and then it gets really exciting and then one day you wake up and you realize that it doesn’t matter. A lot of people, they start this journey because they think that when I have money I’ll be happy. How many of you guys have thought that? If I just had money, if I had security, then I’d be happy. And the weirdest thing happens when you get money and financial security, you find how it does not bring happiness. So I hate to ruin the surprise for you guys. It doesn’t. It brings temporary pleasure, kind of like eating ice cream. It’s like, “Oh that was good, that was really good.” And fifteen minutes later you are like, ”What was I thinking? That was not worth what I feel like now.” That’s how money is, its temporary pleasure. So we mistake that sometimes for happiness, but it doesn’t. It leaves you empty just like that ice cream, you’re empty. Maybe you’re kind of full, but you feel empty inside and you’re like, “Man, I could have not eaten that and felt really good, but I didn’t.” That’s kind of how money, you’ll find out, money isn’t the best………it’s not the best servant. It’s like Ice cream. So they get money and after you get money you realize, “Well, I’m still not truly happy.” Then, and this is the key, then you start focusing more on the contribution and you start trying to make the changes inward in yourself. Because you realize true happiness doesn’t come through wealth, it comes through serving other people, it comes through the actual things I need to change about my life. It has to do with cutting out addictions, with serving people, all these weird religious things we learn about in church. I’ll leave that one there. But it’s interesting. But the problem is that most people never get to fixing themselves and the internal struggles and problems they have and really get out there and contribute because they are so stressed out about the financial problems. I remember growing up, and I don’t remember where in school I learned this, I think its like the Mazlov hierarchy needs or something like that. That’s like 8th grade coming back, so I could be completely off, but I think that’s what it was. And in that there’s the need for hunger, and until that need is met, you can’t do anything else. When you get your hunger met, then you’re like okay I need love. When love’s met, then you need shelter, whatever those things are. There’s all these hierarchy of needs, and the problem is….it’s almost like this is. The real needs are internal problems we have with ourselves that we need to fix, change, grow and develop, but it’s hard to get to that higher need. It’s hard to really care about where you’re living if you’re hungry. As far as Mazlov’s hierarchy. So I feel like, my mission, if we call it that. The reason why it doesn’t matter is because I’m trying to get people to a state where they get through these needs so they can get to a spot where they can focus on their own personal growth and the contribution to help other people. And so if we can get you financially secure and in a place where you’re in a spot of abundance, or whatever you want to call it, now you’ve got the ability to really focus on the inward things that you need to work on in yourself, first off. And second off, really start focusing more on the growth and contribution. So that was cool, like when I saw it today I sketched it out and I had this little thing in my notes with the circles of trigger and fears over tools, over security, over to inward change and then back to growth and contribution. For me, that validated the fact that what I’m doing is important beyond just I’m helping people make money. Because like I said, in the end that doesn’t matter. So for you, I hope you kind of think about that for yourself. The people that you’re serving, and I know that you guys are serving them all at different capacities. Some of you guys are helping save people’s marriages. Some of you guys are helping people with their physical bodies, their health and nutrition. Some of you guys are helping by creating products and services. All of our businesses are here to serve people. That’s why we develop them, that’s why they’re here. So I hope that just thinking through this for your own business, your own life it helps you to kind of think through that and figure out how can I serve people at a higher level? How can I focus on the things that I know are holding me back? I know what holds me back. I know what my pet issues are. The little things that I know, man if I could get rid of these 3 or 4 things I could serve more people, I could feel better about myself. I could be a better dad, a better father, a better husband. I know what those things are and I think you probably do too, deep down. So let’s focus on building the business. You can get your footings underneath you. You can have that stability and you can focus on other things because I don’t want you miss those. I don’t want you to miss out on what life can be because you’re stressing out so much about the financial side of it. The tools are there, the keys are there. We share, everyday on this podcast, we share through Facebook Live, through training, through podcasts, through blogging. We’re giving and sharing as much as we can. We also do it through our training programs, through our coaching, through our software, through our mastermind groups and wherever you’re able to plug in. Plug in and take what you can from that and apply it. Right now, we just recently opened up the Inner Circle, we had a couple spots open up. A bunch of people messaged me, “I can’t afford it, I’m never going to be successful now because I can’t get into your inner circle.” I’m like no, plug in where you’re at. We have stuff at all levels. I’m not holding things back. The reason why my book name is Dot Com Secrets is because I’m the worst secret keeper on planet earth. People always ask me, “Russell, can you keep a secret?” I’m like, “No!” I’m like the worst secret keeper ever. You tell me anything, I’m sharing with the world. I wrote a book called Dot Com Secrets that told everything I ever knew. I am the worst secret keeper ever. But if you’re okay with that, to share with me, I’m going to try to help, and see if whatever you shared with me will help other people. I’m horrible at secrets. I’m not holding back on you guys. There’s nothing that I’m giving that I’m like, “Not going to tell them this piece, they gotta upgrade to get that.” Every level that you plug into, I’m giving you everything. I’m giving you my all. So understand that. If you can’t afford a coaching program yet, then go get the books. If you can’t afford the books yet, get on the podcast, it’s free. If you don’t have a phone to listen to a podcast, go to the library and listen to it. Whatever you need to do, but plug in at whatever level you can and if I’m doing my job right and I’m doing my best, we can ascend you up to the next level. To where you can then afford the next thing to help get you to the next level and keep moving up. And it’s not so much that we want or need more money, but it’s level commitment that comes with that, that helps hold you accountable to actually implementing and following through. Some of these fears and these pains that when you’ve got some money on the line it makes it a lot easier to break through and actually achieve those things that you want in life. So that’s why those things are there. Plug in wherever you can, and we’re going to continue to give and serve and hopefully get you to where you want to be so you can become who you want to be. And if I can do that for at least one of you guys in this podcast, this business, then everything we’re doing is worth it. So I appreciate you guys listening in. For those that are on the MP3 player, I hope you enjoyed this. Go back now to marketinginyourcar.com and make sure you’re subscribed so you can listen to all future episodes. For those of you guys who are on iTunes right now or whatever, listening to this. Harry Potter Gone Wrong WARNING! Photo World Rob is mad today, or at least he starts out mad but anger can be a powerful tool. Let's see how this one wraps up. For now I can tell you why Harry Potter makes it into the episode and what is this ad for Nebraska all about. Well It started by accident more than anything else. A friend of mine who doesn't do much in the way of photography other than ask me to take the pictures for them from time to time, asked me "what is wrong with this picture". They were seriously wondering how a shot like this makes any sense and why it would be published. Well I don't know why or how it got published but I know my mind filled with rage over this Harry Potter sorting hat peaking in near center of the image take a Halloween spin in the midst of a camping trip. I do not know what magazine this was from, I have no idea who the photographer is, I can't tell you where they found their models, and I don't think this is a successful ad for Nebraska. However, I did learn a lot in a short time just letting the emotions run wild. Happy Shooting! Get your FREE business coaching call with Rob! Sign up for one of the last few spots here!
