Sasha Berliner at SFJAZZ: A Homecoming That Charts the Future of the Vibraphone

Episode: Sasha Berliner at SFJAZZ — Recontextualizing the VibraphoneIn this episode, we welcome San Francisco native Sasha Berliner, a vibraphonist, composer, and producer whose work serves as a spectral map of contemporary music. Berliner has emerged as a primary voice in the New York scene by deconstructing the traditional boundaries of her instrument, blending a rigorous jazz foundation with the kinetic, "genre-blurring" spirit of the Bay Area.We discuss her journey from rock drumming in Oakland to studying harmony with Stefon Harris, and her current trajectory toward a new "electric" aesthetic inspired by the fusion giants of the 1970s.Bay Area Foundations: Berliner attributes her experimental spirit to growing up within the artistic landscape of the San Francisco Bay Area and her formative years at the Oakland School for the Arts.A Diverse Sonic Upbringing: Her musical identity remains rooted in an eclectic mix of rock, alternative music, and hip-hop. She notes that her father's history in the local punk scene, specifically his work with the band Alice Donut, significantly influenced her approach. The Influence of Stefon Harris: Moving to New York to study with Harris was a pivotal shift. She utilizes his system of relating harmony to specific emotions as a cornerstone of her compositional process, allowing her music to "speak" without the need for lyrics.Recontextualizing the Vibraphone: Berliner actively works to move beyond "antiquated" associations of the vibraphone, creating a sound that reflects modern textures rather than solely adhering to mid-century jazz archetypes. The Electric Evolution: Her upcoming project, slated for late 2026, focuses on an all-electric ensemble featuring synths and electric bass. This direction draws inspiration from groups like Weather Report and The Headhunters, as well as modern innovators like Chris Potter's Circuits Trio. The Dynamics of Leadership: She reflects on the transition from a versatile side player for luminaries like Christian McBride to a bandleader responsible for the logistical and sonic architecture of her own projects.Musical Tracks Featured"Jade" (from the album Onyx): A track Berliner identifies as the "closest relative" to her developing electric project."Zenith" (from the album Fantôme): A piece featuring a distinctive horn arrangement inspired by the collective energy of Stefon Harris's 90 Miles album.Sasha Berliner returns home this week for a double bill with vocalist Michael Mayo at SFJAZZ.The Ensemble: Berliner will lead a quintet featuring Myles Martin (drums), Julio Xavier Chetto (bass), Javier Santiago (piano/keys), and Tristan Cappel (sax/flute).Date: Saturday, December 27, 2025.Time: 7:30 PM.Venue: Miner Auditorium, San Francisco.Tickets: Available at SFJAZZ.org.Keeping Jazz Alive in the 415.

#649 Warum der Open to Work-Button Führungskräften massiv schadet

Leadership is a Lifestyle - Führung | Recruiting | Karriere

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 4, 2025 16:49

1. Warum „Open to Work“ für Führungskräfte gefährlich ist. Der Button signalisiert Verfügbarkeit statt Nachfrage. Die Wahrnehmung: austauschbar, wartend, bereitgestellt. Knappheit wirkt psychologisch stärker als Offenheit. Im Leadership-Level zählen Reputation, Vertrauen & Nachfrage – niemals Selbstvermarktung im Bewerbermodus. 2. **

If you're a fan of Larry Cohen, the maverick filmmaker behind such mind-bending genre pictures as It's Alive, God Told Me To, Q: The Winged Serpent and The Stuff, you owe it to yourself to check out his newly published memoir: I Killed Bette Davis and Other Confessions of Heinous Crimes Committed in the Name of Moviemaking. The legendary director recounts all the great anecdotes you've already heard - driving a cab on actual NYC sidewalks, firing machine guns from the top of the Chrysler Building with no permit - and about a thousand you haven't. He recounts his fascinating origins as a Borscht Belt comedian and in-demand television writer, includes tribute chapters to Bernard Herrmann and Samuel Fuller, details his ambitious cinematic efforts and the struggle to bring screen legend Bette Davis to the public one last time. We're joined on the episode by James Kenney, who not only edited Cohen's memoir but also discovered and published an unproduced screenplay of Cohen's called Headhunter, the insane tale of a superhero who dresses like a doctor and "cures" criminals of their evil vices. We've also got Andrew Overbye, host of the Authorized Novelization Podcast and recent Cohen enthusiast, to share his feelings on the memoir and the nutty Headhunter. We love Larry Cohen and could have discussed him all day! Set during the final days of World War II, Sisu has become a modern cult favorite thanks to its over-the-top action, striking visuals, and a near-mythic one-man-army protagonist. The story follows Aatami Korpi, played by Jorma Tommila (known for Rare Exports and Big Game), a quiet prospector with a terrifying past. When he strikes gold in the Lapland wilderness, he attracts the attention of Nazi soldiers led by the ruthless SS Officer Bruno Helldorf, played by Aksel Hennie (The Martian, Headhunters). What follows is a relentless warpath of retribution as Aatami single-handedly takes on an entire platoon determined to steal his fortune. The groundbreaking HBO series begins with Episode 1: Winter Is Coming, where we meet the honorable Stark family of Winterfell, led by Eddard “Ned” Stark (Sean Bean, The Lord of the Rings, GoldenEye), his wife Catelyn Stark (Michelle Fairley, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows), and their children including Jon Snow (Kit Harington, Eternals, Pompeii), Robb Stark (Richard Madden, Bodyguard, Cinderella), Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner, X-Men: Dark Phoenix), and Arya Stark (Maisie Williams, The New Mutants). When three seasoned Austin guitarists who grew up watching the same blues legends at legendary venues like Antone's and the Continental Club decide to collaborate, something special is bound to happen. That's exactly what occurred when Johnny Moeller—known for his work with the Fabulous Thunderbirds and backing artists like Marcia Ball—joined forces with Jesse Dayton and Ian Moore to form the Texas Headhunters. What started as a casual studio session between old friends has evolved into a powerhouse trio that captures the authentic spirit of Austin blues while pushing beyond traditional boundaries. Their debut album, recorded in just five days at Willie Nelson's studio, showcases not just their individual talents but their remarkable ability to weave three distinct guitar voices into a cohesive, electrifying sound. In this candid interview, Moeller opens up about the challenges and revelations of transitioning from a career spent primarily as a supporting musician to sharing frontman duties with two other guitar virtuosos. He discusses the delicate art of three-guitar arrangements, the organic songwriting process that drives the band, and how decades of friendship and shared musical heroes created the perfect foundation for this new venture.More than just another blues-rock project, Texas Headhunters represents something increasingly rare in today's music landscape: an entirely organic, human-driven collaboration that stands as a defiant response to the artificial intelligence and manufactured sounds dominating the industry. As Moeller puts it, this is about getting back to "the real shit"—authentic musicianship, spontaneous creativity, and the irreplaceable magic that happens when talented musicians trust each other enough to truly listen and respond.

Today we're going on an aquatic journey with Herbie Hancock's Maiden Voyage. Herbie calls the title track the best tune he's ever written.  We dive deep into the music to explore what makes this tune, and this album, great. The roots of Maiden Voyage date back in 1963, when Herbie began hearing rumors that Miles Davis wanted to hear him play. He didn't believe it at first -- Miles was at the height of his celebrity by this point. But soon he got a call. He went over to Miles's house and played with him, George Coleman, Tony Williams and Ron Carter for three days. On the third day, Miles asks the group to come to studio to record Seven Steps to Heaven. Herbie says, "Does that mean I'm in the band?" Miles says, "You're making the record, mother f**cker!" After two years playing in what many call the one of the greatest jazz ensembles of all time, Herbie would release Maiden Voyage in 1965. Along with George, Tony and Ron, plus saxophonist Freddie Hubbard. Although it is one of his simplest tunes -- with a rhythm inspired by a cologne commercial -- Maiden Voyage would become a favorite and a standard among jazz musicians. In this episode, you'll hear:- Adam and Peter pick apart the greatest moments from the album, including some perfect solos- The story of the commercial roots of this jazz standard- Where the record got its aquatic theme- Why a great song starts with a great bassline (just ask Ron Carter)- How this record could have been even better ... if it weren't for that piano sound- Where we land on Van Gelder Sound controversy-----Keyboards? From In Borneo, the Land of the Head-Hunters to The Epic of Everest to Camping Among the Indians, the early twentieth century was the heyday of expedition filmmaking. As new technologies transformed global transportation and opened new avenues for documentation, and as imperialism and capitalism expanded their reach, Western filmmakers embarked on journeys to places they saw as exotic, seeking to capture both the monumental and the mundane. Their films portrayed far-flung locales, the hardships of travel, and the day-to-day lives of Indigenous people through a deeply colonial lens. Nomadic Cinema: A Cultural Geography of the Expedition Film (Columbia University Press, 2025) by Dr. Alison Griffiths is a groundbreaking history of these films, analyzing them as visual records of colonialism that also offer new possibilities for recognizing Indigenous histories. Dr. Griffiths examines expedition films made in Borneo, Central Asia, Tibet, Polynesia, and the American Southwest, reinterpreting them from decolonial perspectives to provide alternative accounts of exploration. She considers the individuals and institutions—including the American Museum of Natural History—responsible for creating the films, the spectators who sought them out, and the Indigenous intermediaries whose roles white explorers minimized. Ambitious and interdisciplinary, Nomadic Cinema ranges widely, from the roots of expedition films in medieval cartography and travel writing to still-emerging technologies of virtual and augmented reality. Highlighting the material conditions of filmmaking and the environmental footprint left by exploration, this book recovers Indigenous memory and sovereignty from within long-buried sources. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. In the seventies, when Uri Caine was discovering the piano, two dominant influences were Chick Corea and Herbie Hancock.  Both were in their thirties, both had played emerging electric music with Miles Davis after having established their Jazz bona fides, both led successful fusion bands (Chick with Return To Forever, Herbie with his Head Hunters band), and each had a distinctive voice on the keyboard.     How stunning must it have been in 1978 when they announced a joint recording and touring project?  Just two geniuses on stage at two concert grand pianos.  If that's not catnip for an eager young pianist, we don't know what is!  You better believe that, when they came to Philadelphia, Uri Caine was in the house.  I mean, the guy is still talking about it!   What did he hear?  What was the big deal?   Find out Monday (5/26) when Mitch Goldman hosts Uri Caine on Deep Focus and unearths live, unreleased recordings.  Deep Focus airs Mondays from 6p to 9p NYC time on WKCR 89.9FM, WKCR-HD or wkcr.org.     Or join us when it goes up on the Deep Focus podcast on your favorite podcasting app or at https://mitchgoldman.podbean.com/.  Subscribe right now to get notifications when new episodes are posted.  It's ad-free, all free, totally non-commercial.  We won't even ask for your contact info.   Find out more about Deep Focus at https://mitchgoldman.com/about-deep-focus/ or join us on Instagram @deep_focus_podcast.     Photo credit: no publishing information available.   #WKCR #DeepFocus #/UriCaine #HerbieHancock #ChickCorea #JazzRadio #JazzPodcast #JazzInterview #MitchGoldman

Whether you're a fan of ‘60s jazz, ‘70s funk, ‘80s electro, or things inspired by any of the above (or you just watched a lot of Sesame Street growing up), the music of Herbie Hancock has probably affected your life in some way. So Mike thought it was time to take us all on a good old fashioned head hunt. 1973's Head Hunters redefined the course of Hancock's career, was enormously influential on music as a whole, became the first jazz album to ever go platinum, and to this day remains a blast to listen to. If you're a rock fan who's long been intimidated by jazz, this warm, funky, colorful album just might be the one that captures your head.Cohosts: Mike DeFabio, John McFerrin, Dan WatkinsComplete show notes: https://discordpod.com/listen/161-herbie-hancock-head-hunters-1973Discord & Rhyme's merch store: http://tee.pub/lic/discordpodSupport the podcast! https://www.patreon.com/discordpod
